We’ve been getting a lot of different questions about it. Katelyn: Hey, and hey, Beauties. So glad to be back this week. I’m excited about this topic as well. So many layers to dig into here.
Kimberly : Yes. Yeah, so Kay, I’m actually … this is our first podcast. We are doing this early in the morning before Bubby wakes up. Katelyn and I are both a little bit jet lagged. I just got back from the Middle East. Kay just got back from Europe, so we are getting back here, but as always, I think travel is such a wonderful way to enrich our perspective of things. You know, we’re talking about aging today and I just remember being on my around the world trip post-college, which is where so much of this philosophy came from, and seeing some of the most beautiful women all around the world that we’re so comfortable with themselves, that weren’t obsessed with numbers as much or at all really and just had a different perspective of beauty.
Kimberly : So, again, just coming from the Middle East, coming from Europe, I think this is a really great time to talk about this topic and how we resolve feelings about tying our self worth and our beauty to our chronological age and how we feel as we progress in life. So I think this is a really a exciting time to do this topic.
Katelyn: Yeah, I couldn’t have said it better myself. I definitely noticed when I was traveling in different countries, the way people dress or the way they present themselves and how confident they are and there’s just not as many marketing messages, and just even noticing there’s not a nail salon on every corner in Europe. And people don’t always have their nails done or not as much cosmetic surgery, things like that. And just coming back and having that sense of self, I think we’re in a great place to dive into the questions and offer up some of this wisdom.
Kimberly : Perfect, love.
Question #1: Do anti-aging products really work or are we feeding into the hype?
Katelyn: Great. Okay, guys, so let’s see what Faith from Toronto, Canada is asking. “I feel so much pressure as I age. Do all of these anti-aging products really work, or am I just feeding into the hype?”
Kimberly : So, Faith, thank you so much for your question. And even the word anti-aging is a very loaded phrase, I think, because we’re all going to age, that’s just the nature of life. That’s the transient nature of biology. So I think a shift in our paradigm is required where we’re not trying to stop aging altogether, because I think that’s where there is this hype of getting more and more products, work done, things done. We spend more on everything, fashion, accessories, just everything around it. And there’s nothing wrong with any of those things. But I think if we feel this desperation, this energy of trying to stop aging, I think it creates a lot of pressure and it’s just unfounded. There’s no way we can completely stop aging.
Kimberly : What I am a proponent of is living our best life, choosing a lifestyle where we really maximize our potential and we tap into our vitality and our ability to feel our best. When we feel our best, we naturally have a more cleansed body. We have a different quality to our blood flow. We have better circulation. So we had this vitality pulsing out of us and the happy side benefit as well is that with better circulation comes more glowing skin, healthier hair, brighter eyes. So we become … we step into our fullest essence of external beauty as well.
Kimberly : But there’s a difference between the goal being our highest potential, our natural beauty and our vitality versus the goal of anti aging. So I think if we shift our mentality into just tuning in and being our best selves … I’ve seen so many women … I think about travel, I think specifically about countries like France where there is this je ne sais quoi, this confidence, this … and also Africa and just now even in countries in the Middle East where there’s this strength and this showing up and not as much as obsession about comparing on the outside.
Kimberly : One thing I do see as hype is I see, unfortunately, a lot of women starting to look a little bit more of the same because they’re getting the same sort of treatments to their lips and here and there. And I do think that’s hype. I do think our power in our beauty is our individuality and we just want to be our healthiest, most vital selves. So when it comes to products, I do believe in great skin care. Obviously, we have our clean, high-performance, Solluna Skin Care. So I love some products. I think with the right sort of, for instance, stable vitamin C and we have a botanical alternative to retinal. You want to use great ingredients on your skin. But you don’t need a million of them and you don’t need to obsess.
Kimberly : I do think, back to our Solluna cornerstones, there’s food, there’s body, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth. So if we tied it to this, food is such a powerful part of feeling and looking our best. So if you just tune into the hype and the products, you’re not going to get that deep glow unless you’re drinking hot water with lemon and you’re consuming the Glowing Green Smoothie® and you’re taking the dietary protocols that we recommend, trying out some of our recipes, eating really nutrient dense greens and salads and vegetables and trying to avoid things like dairy.
Kimberly : All the principles we teach, that’s going to give you that power and that glow and that energy from the inside. Body wise, again, you want to make sure you’re taking care of your skin with proper skincare, you want to make sure you’re sleeping well, although, I can’t say that. I could say I’m sleeping well right now, Kay, neither are you with the jet lag. But of course over a regular basis.
Kimberly : Emotionally you want to start getting out of drama and lots of ups and downs in your life, which is stimulating to cortisol, stress hormones, which is a precursor to aging and wrinkles in your skin. So when we live this life of more equanimity and feeling our feelings and not repressing and suppressing, which is a big part of what we teach in the Solluna circle, more emotional stability is a part of beauty and it is part of great skin and really magnetic energy.
Kimberly : And then finally spiritual growth. This stillness tapping in, connecting to our true selves, that starts to radiate out in a much more powerful way than anything you could paint on externally. And that really is timeless, that’s beautiful.
Kimberly : So when we look at everything holistically and we think about balancing our emotions and connecting with our spirit as our real source of beauty, we don’t feel that pressure of like, oh my God, I’m aging and I need to buy a million different kinds of makeup products and do this and you know, get my … Again, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with getting your lips done per se. I’m just saying if you’re doing it because of this pressure to keep up, it’s like this never ending battle and it creates so much stress and self esteem issues. So I say, Faith, looking at everything in a holistic way so you don’t feel that pressure, so you enjoy life, and so you know deep down no matter what you are beautiful just as you are and the more you tap into that truth the more beautiful, you’re going to look to other people as well.
Katelyn: Yeah. And when something feels like a hype, you can almost ask yourself, am I being fed marketing messages that are hitting my insecurities? Because a lot of times that’s what marketing does, and we have to be aware of that because we live in a society where we’re constantly bombarded with messages and we want to take in the positive ones. So, Faith, you are already a step ahead thinking is this a hype? And when something triggers that, you want to want to think about it. So be aware of that, guys.
Question #2: How to love yourself and not pick yourself apart
Katelyn: Okay, so let’s see what Barb from New York, New York is saying. “How can I learn to love myself as I age and not pick myself apart as my body changes and I head towards my forties? It is so much harder to lose weight now…” I’m sorry. I don’t know [inaudible 00:10:49] “It is so much harder to lose weight now as well as keep away wrinkles. Can I age gracefully?”
Kimberly : So I think, Barb, when I hear your question, thank you so much for writing in. First of all, I want to get you out of numbers mindset. At any moment in time I always say it’s not about our chronological age, but really our biological age. So the difference, Deepak is someone that was the first person I heard talk about this, Deepak Chopra, my co-author on Radical Beauty. And as he says, there’s really a chronological age, which is your birth date, the day that you were actually born. And then there’s your biological age, which is really the rate at which your organs are aging, your rate of Chi or vitality, as we were just talking about in the last question. And these two can be very different things.
Kimberly : So I have personally worked with clients who are, let’s say in their twenties and they are living a pretty hard lifestyle for their body. They’re not eating great, maybe they’re partying a lot, whatever’s going on, not sleeping great. And at that moment, biologically they are older than their chronological age. And I’ve also seen people who are much older or their chronological age is a lot older than how they actually look physically, their biological age. So they could be in their sixties or fifties whatever, forties and look and feel and have this like youthful energy and vitality of people in their twenties.
Kimberly : So first of all, Barb, I just want to say not to fixate so much on the numbers, but to go back to that feeling and the vitality. And when we fixate on numbers, whether it’s our weight, whether it’s our age, we start to feel really limited because numbers are limited and numbers are finite. It doesn’t account for all the energy. And I’ve said this analogy a billion times, I’m going to say it again. 500 calories of an avocado digest very differently than 500 calories of potato chips. So we know that within numbers there isn’t the essence, there isn’t the quality, it doesn’t dictate how you have to look or how you have to feel at any age.
Kimberly : So I want you to stop fixating so much on the number and bringing it up a lot in conversation, volunteering it. I just think all numbers have a… For me, weight has been a big number that’s controlled me. And now I don’t … when I decided to throw out my scale, which was really hard for me to do because I used to try to weigh myself so much and fixate over, but once it became a non-issue, I just felt so much better in my body. And I actually don’t know how much I weigh now, but I know that I feel good in my clothes. And so it was the break from numbers that I think makes it easier for me to focus on eating for energy, not counting calories, eating a lot of bulk through fiber and breaking free of the numbers. And so I think it is for age. I noticed a lot of people say, Oh, you know, now that I’m 37 or whatever the age is, and it’s like the precursor to everything they want to say about themselves or their energy.
Kimberly : So I think our brains can be retrained. Yogananda, this great guru talks so much about this. In modern scientific terms that would be called neuroplasticity, rewiring our neurons. But if we can start to drop the focus on how much we weigh and what our numerical, chronological age is day to day, it starts to become much less of an issue.
Kimberly : And then I think we focus on again, the Solluna cornerstones. Well, what can I do to be my highest vitality? What can I eat? What can I choose this meal and this moment and this snack? I wake up in the morning maybe a little groggy, but can I get on track? Can I go right into my morning ritual? Can I meditate? Can I commit to a practice? Can I body wise, how do I want to exercise today? How do I want to feel? What can I do to increase my sleep? What can I do to really feel my feelings, create emotional wellbeing. A lot of the information we talk about in the new book, Recipes for Your Perfectly Imperfect Life. And then spiritually knowing that our source of power comes from tapping into it. So knowing I actually am the most powerful and magnetic and beautiful when I tap into that, and when I take the time to meditate and follow my practice.
Kimberly : When we look at it that way, we actually have a lot in our control. I think we feel stressed when we feel like everything’s out of our control and it’s like, oh my God, it’s so much harder to lose weight because I’m this age, and Barb was talking about skin. So drop the pressure on yourself about the age. Focus on cleansing your body, living the lifestyle, and guess what? Your body will start to release more easily when you follow this in your cleansing out. I don’t believe that just because we’re a certain age, it means that our body has to hold onto more weight. I think a lot of it is actually mental. There’s some studies I talk about in [inaudible 00:16:18] Detox Power that talk about this.
Kimberly : But I think again, if we can just look at it more from a lifestyle standpoint and know that we’re doing more and more to enhance it from a deeper perspective and we feel good and we feel more powerful, then all this surface stuff and the noise and everything we hear outside I think doesn’t feel as controlling to us.
Kimberly : So yeah.
Katelyn: I think we’re so much more than numbers, as you say. We put ourselves in a box, I remember during my Iron Man race a 70-year-old passed me. And a lot of people say, “Oh, I’m too old. I could never do that,” or this and that. And I just put stuff in a sports context, because that’s how I live my life. But you’re never too old, too young, for moving those boundaries, can really open up, as you know, you mentioned answering Barb’s question here guys. So something to ponder on as we head into our break. And then we’ll be back and Kimberly will answer the last two questions.
Kimberly : All right, Beauties, we are back from our little break here and we have two more questions for you guys on the topic of aging, aging gracefully, how we deal with the inevitable onslaught of time that goes on and on, but how through that we can actually embrace our growing wisdom and the depth that we acquire as time goes on and not be scared of aging, but actually to know that the truest sense we can actually become more and more beautiful as time goes on, which is the truth.
Question #3: How do you deal with aging and not feeling like it’s a negative thing?
Katelyn: Yes. So let’s see what Jennifer is asking. She’s living in lovely Tampa, Florida, and she says, “How do you deal with aging? I tried to avoid numbers as you suggest, but they come up from time to time. Is there a healthy way to view aging rather than feeling like it’s a negative thing?”
Kimberly : Such a great question. So this is exactly what I was sort of saying as we got off the break. So I think that how you do anything affects everything. So what I mean is giving up numbers in one area for me translates to giving up numbers across all areas of my life. When I stopped counting calories, I stopped weighing myself is when I stopped thinking about my age, is when I stop thinking so much about numbers across my life, obsessing about the numbers of money, salary. Of course, we need to know, you know what’s going on and we need to balance our finances and things like that.
Kimberly : But for me it’s a paradigm shift. For me I believe in energy. I believe in tuning into our feelings. I know when I am the most powerful is when I’m calm, when I’m able to listen to intuition, what I call downloads coming in, and everything works better, so the numbers take care of themselves. I know when I’m tuned into energy with food and I’m focused on the quality of the food and the wholeness and how I’m preparing it and the oils I’m using and the food combining, my weight takes care of itself. So for me, I just look at energy. It’s been a shift, believe me, it takes time. Especially for someone like myself that was obsessed with weight, obsessed with dieting, obsessed with being thin.
Kimberly : So as I age, I guess I find it easier because I have had this period in my life where I really worked on giving up numbers and that’s a power, there’s a real freedom in that. I wish that on any person, on any woman, especially, doing a numbers detox and if I can do it, you can do it too. But like I said, if you’re doing it one area then you’re going to do in others. So it may be easier for you to start doing it with like calories or the scale or your weight and not obsessing. And then eventually it translates to, like we were saying earlier, not saying your age as much, which I know is hard because a lot of people focus on it outwardly, but when we can only control ourselves. So the more you stop obsessing about numbers across your life in general, the easier it is to stop obsessing about aging, I think.
Kimberly : The other part of your question about feeling like it’s a negative thing, I just think back about, think about the periods in your life when you were a struggling teenager. I think about how chronically I was obsessed with dieting in college and then afterwards and traveling now versus when I did my backpacking trip. Back at that point and just the depth and the understanding and the more I understand about myself and how much less drama there is in my life. And I just think about this deepening of wisdom that comes with living and comes with progressing. And I think when we look back on that and we think about the wisdom that grows, you can realize that time, in this way, isn’t a negative thing. It means that we have greater perspective. We have an ability to be more happy, more joyful and peaceful.
Kimberly : And sure you can look back and say, “Oh, look at how, you know, my skin looked when I was 21,” or whatever. But I also think about how insecure you were and how much you were floundering and how confused you were and how much more you know about yourself now. And then saying, would you ever really want to give that up? Would you want to give up that … your peace, which is growing and the opportunity to just have a deeper perspective, or as I say, move from deeper waters.
Kimberly : So I think when we look at beauty, you could look at beauty through the lens of the four cornerstones as well. From are you more emotionally beautiful? Spiritually? Are you tuned into yourself more? If not, that’s okay too, by the way, because it means that you’re listening to this. Everything happens for a reason. So this is an opportunity to shift into working on the emotional, spiritual growth within yourself, as well as taking care of your body and cleaning up your diet in a really holistic way.
Kimberly : So it all goes back to lifestyle. It all goes back to holism and not reducing ourselves down to numbers. Because if we do then you compare, oh my body is different and looks different and dah, dah, dah, then it was 10, 20, whatever 30 years ago. But when we look at ourselves in a holistic way, it’s actually not negative, because we’ve acquired and we’ve grown so much more, so many experiences and we can connect to people in a deeper way than when we were younger, because we just know so much more about ourselves. And that is true power and true beauty.
Katelyn: You can almost look at aging as a blessing. That’s how I’ve been looking at it, as I get older. I would always say, “I’d never want to go back. Like, please”-
Kimberly : Exactly.
Katelyn: I wouldn’t want to reverse. And looking at the gifts that we get as we get older and the perspective changes and the suffering that we suffer in different ways, but I look back at my twenties and I’m just like, I didn’t have that toolbox, that toolkit to know how to get through things that I do now. And it really comes down to perspective, as you were talking about, the energy we put into things. When somebody’s constantly worried about their age or the way they look, then you’re not living in the present moment. We’re just worried. Right? So if we look at it in a positive way … Yeah.
Kimberly : Yeah, that’s right. It’s all about perspective. And you know, Ram Dass, this great spiritual teacher, always talks about anything that you’re trying to cling to in time by definition means you’re always going to suffer. So it’s even like trying to cling … and I’ve felt this within myself, trying to cling to Bubby being a certain age because he’s growing up and he’s … it continues to deepen. He was so cute when he was six months and then he was eight months and then he was a year. And there was a part of me that said, “Oh, you’re so cute. Just stay a little baby,” which of course isn’t life, and that’s not how time works, and if you try to cling to that you suffer as your children age as well, versus that letting go of the process and the wisdom and the beauty at each stage and every stage in life, whether it’s your children or with yourself.
Kimberly : So I actually think it’s going to be amazing when I am a grandmother one day and I think about that, being able to be around young ones again and also having gone through life and having wisdom to give the next generations within your family. I think it’s cool. I think that there’s a lot we can look at. And I know it’s so different than what we see in the media, but that’s why I also think it’s important to limit media exposure that can make us feel inadequate. Monitor who you’re following on social media and what you’re watching on TV and all of that as well. Because when you don’t have to listen to negativity, anytime you can cut it out, you should, you can because it’s your choice and you really want to just fill your heart, you want to fill your ears, you want to fill your being with what makes you feel good and what’s supportive as you move towards a much more holistic perspective, versus numbers-based stress.
Question #4: How can we deal with the feelings of inadequacy?
Katelyn: And I think that’s a great entry into the question Laura’s asking, who’s living in San Diego, California, And she says, “We can’t stop the process of aging, so how do we deal with feelings of inadequacy, when we see all these anti-aging messages? Any suggestions on how to do this without completely disconnecting?”
Kimberly : Yeah, Laura. So I think this tunes into everything that we’ve talked about so far. This idea we don’t want to disconnect. We don’t want to turn off everything. But I think at the same time we don’t get swept up in as much of the surface if we’re only connected to the surface of who we are. When we start to tune in to … Let’s take the spiritual cornerstone. I know for me, when I started meditating, my whole life changed. Like a regular practice, not just once in awhile. But for me, I started to have a deep knowing that there’s nobody like me and [inaudible 00:27:04] there’s nobody like you. And when you tap into that uniqueness and you know that only you can say things, do things in a very specific way, it doesn’t mean you’re better than anybody else, but it means that you have a unique light coming through you.
Kimberly : To me, that is the power, that’s confidence and it gives you a stronger base so you’re less susceptible to the marketing messages. You’ve to tuned into yourself, the perfect within the perfectly imperfect. So you don’t take the imperfections as seriously. Imperfections, so-called imperfections could be your weight, it could be this aging topic we’re talking about, if we think our hair looks more gray than it did five years ago, whatever it is. We fixate more where we don’t tune into the inside. So to me the key in feeling confident and beautiful and aging gracefully is to tune into that inner essence within you that never changes, that never grows old, that doesn’t … You’re not adding to it, you’re not taking it away, it’s your spirit, it’s your essence.
Kimberly : And when you tune into that, I promise, you are more beautiful than you can ever imagine. You are strong, you are confident, there’s a light coming through you, there’s a real glow, there is a different quality to your smile and to your eyes. And as a consequence I think you are more connected to every energy, and to food. I know for me it’s easier to not want junk food as much. Now sometimes I do eat pretzels and I still eat things, but I’m so connected to my body, a lot more than when I was dieting, when I was bulimarexic. So I know how certain foods are going to make me feel because I am actually connected to that within me. If I’m not connected to me it means I hear messages, I see all these anti-aging, marketing hype things coming at me and I’m more susceptible unless I had that root, I had that strength.

It’s also connecting, breathing, feeling into yourself before you get on Instagram, before you get on email. Practice is everything. You must have a daily practice. I really believe in a daily spiritual practice, even if it’s a minute, three minutes in the morning of breathing, stillness, mindfulness, meditation, whatever it is. The more you stick to a definite practice, the better you’re going to feel and the more anchored you are into yourself.
Katelyn: Today’s show is such a nice reminder to love yourself, be gentle with yourself, which are big themes that we have in Solluna for you guys, through the vlogs and all of the support on social and Instagram. We try to put out those positive messages, positive body image because there is so much out there that can feel attacking.
Kimberly : Exactly. It’s attacking about your body, attacking about age, attacking about hair, attacking about skin. I mean it’s really this world of inadequacy to sell more and to create that discomfort which does create a lot of buying. So only us, we are the ones that are in control of how we feel and the way out of the marketing hype, the way out of this anti-aging, out of control stress again is to go within. You can feel your most beautiful, you can feel your most vitality at any age. I truly believe that. I see it all the time in my work. It is independent of chronological age. It’s based on lifestyle and tuning into ourself. And if you start, especially as some sort of spiritual practice now. A stillness practice to go inside and connect to yourself, I promise that aging will not feel as stressful to you because you will have the shelter of yourself, you will have the connection to yourself, which becomes the louder connection versus the messages coming at you, the being tossed in the waves.
Kimberly : So go within, it’s the same thing that Yogananda and all these gurus say. Go inside, go inside to find the power, go inside to feel the strength of yourself, to feel the beauty. And then whether you’re 25 or 55 you’re just so much more tuned into that and you know that you can be your most beautiful at any point.
Katelyn: I almost feel like that’s the quote of the week. I was going to say it’s time for the quote of the week, but I feel like that was a great ending.
Thought of the Week
Kimberly : Yes. I think it’s along the lines, very similar themes as we go through this topic, because it’s all very layered and supports different aspects of this topic. But I do have a quote from Rumi that is “The only lasting beauty is the beauty of the heart.” And so again, we cling to … we compare how our hair or skin looked when we were in high school versus now, five years ago, whatever. It’s fleeting and it’s stressful to try to cling. But if we don’t compare, if we say this moment how can I feel my best? How can I take the best care of my body? How can I tune in the best to myself? The beauty of the heart, that is so powerful and magnetic and it draws people to you. People want to be around you. You will attract so much abundance of love and connection because of that true, true beauty.
Kimberly : So remember, Beauties, don’t focus so much on your age, don’t hyper fixate on it, don’t bring it up all the time, don’t get your source of external beauty comparisons in the media and social media where so many people today are altering their appearance to look more similar to each other and to reduce the nuances of our individual beauty. You are unique, you are amazing just as you are a tune into that. Spend time with yourself. Spend time in stillness. Beauty isn’t just about what we paid on the outside. We need good products. We want to feel like we’re using really effective skincare and whatnot, but go inside and connect with yourself and let that true beauty shine out.
Kimberly : It’s been a journey for me. I know it’s been a journey for you, too, Katelyn, for two people that used to beat themselves up a lot. Recovering perfectionists, eating disorders, all sorts of things. So I know this is a journey certainly, but I can say as someone who’s on the other side, go with a practice, stick with something, build on your morning practice, tune into yourself, build from there, make the best choices you can from a lifestyle perspective.
Kimberly : We have all sorts of resources for you at mysolluna.com from recipes, the meditations, the Solluna Circle, where we take a deep dive into emotional wellbeing, spiritual growth, community. It’s really beautiful, Circle is. Another one of my favorite things that we do, we also have our probiotics or supplements, our skincare to support your body through this process as well. And when you use the really effective supplements and skin care, you realize that you don’t need a ton of stuff. You just need to work on what’s really supporting you in the deepest way and from a foundational perspective of circulation, digestion, your dermis or skin, but you don’t need a lot. And then you can go forward and live your best, feel your best, feel your most beautiful.
