Today I want to talk to you about the importance of establishing a morning routine. Starting the day off on the right food will positively impact your whole day!

I know that it can feel intimidating when there’s so much information and you don’t know where to start or what to implement. So let me walk you through the changes necessary to improve our overall health and beauty, and increase our energy!

Why A Morning Routine?

I’ve dug into a lot of research around this subject and in my opinion, a morning routine is the best place to start implementing long-term change that is most beneficial. This is because we are all so different. Certain people have strong willpower and can make themselves do things and for other people it’s not so easy. Not everybody has equal levels of willpower.

Willpower is like a finite resource for anyone— you can actually drain it. When you’re making decisions about what to do or you’re contemplating what to do, you actually start to drain your willpower. Some call this decision fatigue. This is when it becomes harder and harder to make the right decisions because when you’re fatigued, you’ll tend to be more impulsive.

One of the biggest benefits of implementing a morning routine is that you automate behaviors, disciplines, and things that are important to you. This routine reflects your values and moves you towards a goal. You do it in a way that really minimizes the energy or willpower it use to take you because you don’t have to think about it. You no longer are pushing yourself to do it.

The routine becomes automatic. When you get up in the morning you know what to do and this sets you up for a better day even if the rest of your day isn’t perfect. The energetic willpower cost of that is almost zero.

The morning sets the tone and is where, a lot of time, we have the most control, especially compared to the night. You might find that you have control at night, but you might be so tired or depleted that it doesn’t matter as much. Whereas the morning, you have control over what you do in your time and your space. There is also energy there to actually create a strong foundation.

I think in terms of making lifestyle changes, it’s important that you experience the benefits of feeling good, and that’s what makes you stick with a program. You start to build upon it, and to start making better choices.

What Is The Ideal Routine?

Meditation:

The ideal Beauty Detox morning routine is to get up (even if it’s just a few moments) and just sit. You can take three minutes to go through some guided meditations— just to ground yourself. It can be as little as 30 seconds building up to a longer meditation. It’s really about having the time with yourself before you start getting pulled in different directions.

Drink Water:

Most all of us become dehydrated during the night, so the next step would be to drink room temperature water. Then, make your hot water with lemon. That’s a mug of water that you sip with at least half a lemon squeezed in it.

Glowing Green Smoothie:

This is where you’ll want to listen to your body. You can wait up to 20 minutes or so, but because it’s just hot water with lemon, you could pretty much have your Glowing Green Smoothie® right after.

A good way to do it is when you start to feel hunger, drink at least 16 ounces of your GGS and build up to 24 ounces. This will become the foundation of your routine. It’s pretty simple. There’s just a few components. Easy AND simple. Just stick with it!!

Mid-Morning Snack:

If you start feeling hungry come mid-morning, reach for a healthy snack. Opt for oatmeal or a gluten-free Open Faced Avo Beauty Sandwich versus heavier foods, such as doughnuts or omelettes. You can also stay blended all morning and have a Power Protein Smoothie later in the morning, as I sometimes do if I have my hands full with Bubs. Your ultimate goal is to be in a position to make better choices and once you make that first right choice, you’re setting yourself up for more positive choices throughout your day.

The Benefits

Adding these few things to your morning routine will have a profound affect on your overall health, Beauty, and energy. You’re pretty much having the highest nutrient-filled drink possible. Packing yourself with whole foods that are filled with fiber, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Everything from the greens, lemon, and whole ripe fruit— which makes up about 30% of it. It’s mostly green-based, which is why we call it the Glowing Green Smoothie®.

Many of us want to reach for coffee first thing, but you can have coffee later on. It’s so important to start the day on an up note and not something that is flushing your liver with caffeine. The hot water with lemon will do just that,  giving you a dose of beauty-building vitamin C and supporting your liver (which is your main detoxifying organ!). It also will re-hydrate you, which is so important to get into the habit of hydrating before treating yourself to that morning brew (if you must ;) ).

Spiritual direction:

It can be helpful to think about developing your morning health and wellness ritual along spiritual lines, if you are so inclined (as I am). I think of my morning routine not just in practical terms of ticking off health habits, but also as a way to foster self love, and signaling and expressing that I am honoring myself, which is a way of honoring God/Spirit/the Universe/True Self within me- whatever term you want to use. We must all care for our bodily temple, in order for us to serve and reach our highest potential in our lives!

Having self-love is so important in taking care of yourself. It’s amazing how all things in your life improve when you take time out of your busy schedule to really love yourself and have compassion with yourself.

In Closing…

Remember, we are not perfect and our routines may not always happen perfectly. But try to at least stick to parts of your morning routine and you’ll see amazing results. Again, the hot water with lemon is something that’s really easy to implement. You could always just get a bag of lemons once or twice a month (to stock up), keeping them in your fridge and do that everyday, or at least have a glass of water before you have your coffee. Have a couple minutes of meditation before you reach for your cell phone right away.

I can honestly say that my life has shifted a lot after having Lil Bub, but because I have made my morning routine a daily habit, no matter what, I still meditate (even while I’m nursing). My hot water with lemon is always there. I still do the Glowing Green Smoothie, maybe a little bit later, maybe a little bit earlier.

The point is, the foundation of the routine is there. It helped save me from feeling completely off balance with such a huge life shift. We all do our best. Even when you’re busy, at least you can do the hot water with lemon, and the meditation, and hopefully the GGS.

Having this routine deeply rooted can really help anchor you during big life changes (whatever they may be). Our morning ritual is like putting a stake down in your life and saying that you’ll always do something good for yourself first thing in the morning.

It’s impossible to overstate how important it is to have that physical and psychological anchor that keeps us in that feeling of consistency. It allows us to reconnect to what matters and to empower our body to feel good and have energy on so many levels— nutritionally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Set yourself up for the day to feel centered and connected to yourself.
