With the stagnation of winter, comes congestion—not only from not moving around as much, but from eating heavier foods, being indoors more, and wearing heavy clothing that keeps our skin from breathing as much as it should.
This is a great time of year to focus on expelling the accumulated stress on a sluggish lymph system and focus on detoxing and cleaning out your entire, amazing body.
What for? Because…(!) our lymph system is responsible for removing toxins and waste products from our entire bodies. And the less toxins we have lurking around our systems, contaminating the purity of our system, the better our organs can function, the less inflammation in our bodies and the more glowing our skin.
And because spring is the onset of release and the celebration of re-balance, my Spring Cleanser Smoothie Recipe is what is in right now :). It’s full of detoxifying enzymes and digestive aids to support your gut and entire well-being. You’ll be feeling fresh and perky like all those spring flowers you see popping up all around in no time!
Exceptional Beauty Fruit: Pineapple
Pineapples are one of the most delish fruits/foods in general. And when you discover how amazing they are for cleansing, isn’t that just the best news ever?!
Pineapple is beautifying for a number of reasons. First of all, it’s a great hydrating, high water food that is full of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps in the formation of collagen, a protein that helps grow new skin and blood vessels.
Natural vitamin C (like from the pineapple), can help mitigate the effects of skin damaging doozies like free radicals. And the high vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants of whole pineapple help balance the effects of its natural sugar.
Besides hydrating, this fruit is packed with bromelain, an enzyme which helps promote optimal digestion—the key for truly supporting you in expressing your natural beauty.
Something else that is SO important for being and feeling (not to mention looking) your best is reducing inflammation. Pineapple is packed with these anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce the onset of aging, pain, and even disease.
Not only is pineapple hydrating and a beauty anti-inflammatory, but it also helps the body naturally detoxify itself and lose weight—which is another reason it’s a great addition to this smoothie in cleaning out our guts and giving us a flatter belly.
Note: I l-o-v-e me some pineapple, but I always make sure to eat it either in your Glowing Green Smoothie, in the morning (if I’m up early, which seems to the case since having Lil Bub), or in the middle of the afternoon (like in this smoothie).
Remember too, that fruit should be eaten on an empty stomach and can be mixed with other raw veggies (just not with melons- read more about this in my Beauty Detox Solution book).
Digestive Herb: Cilantro
What else can we add to this smoothie to enhance our digestion? CILANTRO! Yes, cilantro (with many other herbs and spices), is a great way to purge heavy metals from your system and give your metabolism a boost.
Heavy metals can be the source of millions of free radicals in our systems. How do these nasties infest us in the first place??? From all over the place! Including from environmental pollution, factory farmed meats (you eat what the animals you eat consume!), the water supply, etc. Thanks to cilantro and its cleansing and detoxifying properties, we will receive the help we need to bind and escort out (chelate), heavy metals which are aging and can diminish your beauty.
Cilantro (and coriander seeds), also have an unusual array of phytonutrients and are a very good source of dietary fiber, copper, manganese, iron, magnesium, and calcium.
With all these benefits, it may be a good idea to start considering your very own garden—loaded with this amazing herb! Having an array of herbs at your fingertips is a great way to start incorporating more cleansing green herbs into your life.
As for storing, you may have noticed just how highly perishable fresh coriander can be. I’ve found it helpful to always store it in the fridge. Store the bunch with its roots still attached (placing the roots in a glass of water and covering the leaves with a loosely fitting plastic bag).
Another option would be to cut off the roots, give them a good rinsing, into the salad spinner, and then wrapping the leaves in a damp cloth or paper towel, placing them in a plastic bag. The coriander leaves will generally last about three days (or less, if you’re adding it to your GGS!). ;)
