In today’s Vlog I want to share my Food And Drink Suggestions To Keep You Warm this winter season, our bodies often need an extra boost to keep our immunity high and our circulation flowing as the colder weather arrives.

I am so excited to be back with you today talking about how to stay warm and toasty this winter with different drinks and foods. I got back from Chicago recently, where it was freezing and I really enjoyed myself, but it reminded me because I’m not always in such a cold place, how important it is to really fortify ourselves from the inside out. Food is such an important way to shift our mood and to help strengthen our immunity, and just to feel really good. And part of that natural cycle, going with the rhythms of the seasons and what’s going on inside is to honor that, and to really balance what we’re eating with the external elements.
Along those lines, let’s start with some practical tips starting from the morning up. This is a particularly great time of year when you’re making with your hot water with lemon, to also throw a couple ginger slices in there. Ginger is a really warming herb. It is not irritating to your system, but it helps to promote heat in the body, a warming effect. It’s great for your metabolism, it’s great for circulation, which we need in the winter especially to keep the warmth going into our extremities. I really recommend now perhaps weekly when you’re at the grocery store, just getting a nub of ginger and working it in. Again, one of the easiest ways to get it in daily is in your hot water with lemon in the morning to warm up first thing.
Now, I am still a believer in having the Glowing Green Smoothie year round. I do think it’s important that we still get our vitamins and our enzymes. What I recommend is putting your GGS on the counter first thing in the morning, letting it thaw a little bit if you make it in batches. If you’re making it fresh every morning perhaps not using any frozen fruit, including if you freeze your bananas. Making the water maybe not as icy, so it just tastes a little bit closer to room temperature, and that way you can still get it into your system.
When I was in Chicago I just loved having herbal hot tea, all the time, all the time. The way I would just keep it from getting old is I would just keep switching it up and I do that at home here too. Of course at home you have other options, but when I was out I would have mint, chamomile, verbana and so on tea. Sometimes during the day I would even get a green tea. Sometimes in the day, I’d do this at Starbucks and other coffee places, I’d make a milky latte which tastes really snugly, made with half-steamed coconut milk or almond milk, and half hot water with a tea in there. That just is a really nice treat. It’s also really warm and delicious, and so I really love that option.
Another thing I do a lot when it’s cold out is soup. If you live in a cold place and you’re not eating out at restaurants, you have such a wide range of soups you can choose from and soups you can make. Of course I have lots of recipes for you guys here on the website, on mysolluna.com. You can try making them in batches like I do. When you have time, you could just throw all your veggie scraps into a pot and make your own veggie broth, which is really easy to make and adds great flavor and also saves on money so you don’t have to buy veggie broth. We do that here in our house, probably once a week. We just make a huge batch of veggie broth, and I love soup so much, I can’t even tell you guys. If I had to choose between eating non-soup and soup, I might just choose soup!! I love it and I think it’s so nourishing just to feed yourself that nice, warm liquid or sometimes thicker soup. There’s something about it that warms you from the inside out.
Besides ginger, I use lots of warming spices in some of my daal, as well as even cinnamon sticks. Sometimes we think of cinnamon as just being sweet, but we can use cinnamon, cloves, turmeric in savory soups. Again, the ginger is a great soup add, and there’s also lots of warming spices that we can use which are really, really delicious and well also just to warm us from the inside out.
Another thing we could do this time of year is have warm salads. We still want some of that crunch, that raw element, but sometimes if we’re just like, “That salad just seems so cold. I don’t want to eat it!” you can just warm the greens really lightly, like spinach, and let it wilt as a salad. It can be a little bit more appetizing for you if you’re having a hard time eating salad this time of year.
