Today I’m going to be talking about swapping out ingredients for the GGS, the Glowing Green Smoothie®, including ingredients that I really recommend and some ingredients that I don’t recommend. I’m bringing this up today partially because of the recent E Coli breakout for Romaine lettuce and we’ve had some advisories about avoiding Romaine lettuce in the recent past, and some of you have written in and asked me, “What can I swap in for the Romaine in the classic GGS recipe?” That’s what I’m going to talk about today.
Our classic ratio, our important ratio for the GGS, is having a base of water, about 70% greens, about 30% high fiber fruit, and always having that lemon juice. I’m going to break it down piece by piece.
First of all the base of water is something I always recommend that you keep.
For other smoothies we can use almond milk or hemp milk or coconut milk or coconut water, but for the most part, I really like to keep the GGS simple so that it’s building up your body with minerals and nutrients, and it’s helping to flush out your system with all the cleansing effects of the fruit and the fiber. So, we keep it to water, for the most part.
For the 70% greens, this is where mixing and matching is very key, because different greens have different nutrients and different levels of certain minerals. I’ve talked about this before, but I’ll say it again, we want to mix and match the spinach, for instance, you can swap in kale or chard. You could up the amount of herbs, which is what I do sometimes. I really do love parsley and cilantro, so sometimes I’ll have a lot of herbs.
Romaine has a lot of different minerals. It’s also very mild, so in swapping out Romaine, sometimes I just take mixed salad greens and I’ll use that, or I’ll use butter lettuce, or again, I’ll just use more herbs like cilantro, parsley. Sometimes I’ll use cucumber, sometimes I’ll swap the celery for the cucumber, vice versa. Just having a nice mix is great. You don’t want to have all super intense kale, because it’s going to taste really heavy.
Again, you want to have that mix of some cucumber, some herbs, if you’re not doing the Romaine, some celery along with the kale, otherwise the taste is going to be a little put off-putting, and this is something I want you to have long-term and to really build this into your morning ritual and your morning process long-term, so we need to make sure it tastes good.
Now, the fruit you can also mix and match. Classically, we have some apple, pear, and banana, when you’re making a big batch. I also see what’s seasonal and what tastes good to you. I really do love the pear, I really do love the apple a lot. Sometimes in the summer when it’s in season, it’s okay to use strawberries.
Make sure they’re organic, please, because they’re one of the top dirty dozen foods, year after year in the environmental working group list. Strawberries are great. Pineapple’s great. You guys can check out all the different GGS recipes on kinberlysnyder.com as well. I love blueberries, but blueberries can make your GGS look kind of brown, so rom a visual standpoint, maybe not the best choice. But mixing and matching your fruit, all around, is great.
Now, I always love to keep the lemon in. The lemon is really special because it helps to really support your liver, which is our main fat-burning organ and our main detoxifying organ. There’s a lot of vitamin C in lemons. They have those special enzymes. Lime I use in some versions of the GGS, such as the Puerto Rican version. But in general, I would say over 90% of the time I use lemon.
You can use limes, again, but lemons are in general a more powerful beauty food, especially with what we’re doing in the GGS, which is cleansing, replenishing, and also flushing out waste. Really supporting your organs, supporting your health and your vitality and your beauty overall.
Again, because of this rotation, because of the mix and matching, do not worry if sometimes, again, whether it’s an outbreak or a shortage or whatever it is, one of the ingredients like Romaine you have to swap out, it’s totally fine. Lots of amazing choices out there. See what looks good at the market as well, the farmers’ market, and you can just keep mixing and matching and getting a wide range in your GGS for the long term.
Hope that helps, Beauties, and again, tons of different GGS recipes you can check out here for more inspiration. I’ll see you guys back here soon or on the podcast, Beauty Inside Out, or on social media. Sending you so much love. Have an amazing rest of your day.
Lots of love,
