I’m a huge fan of acai. In the busy/stressed/polluted world we live in we need to replenish our bodies with super-charged foods, and acai is one such amazing food. It is loaded with antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamins and is naturally sugar-free.

I called this smoothie my Acai Purple Beauty Angel Smoothie. Why ā€œangelā€ you might ask me?! Hmm…to be honest, who knows?? I can’t give you a straight answer. It just kind of popped into my head when I was naming the smoothie. ā€œPurple rainā€ is too cliched, as much as I love and respect Prince.

I’ve already used ā€œrainforestā€ in our Rainforest Acai recipe. Well, angels protect and have healing powers, which is kind of like what acai does? I admit it’s a bit random. But I like it. And I hope you too like the name, but more importantly, love this smoothie too, as I do!!

Acai Berries

Acai berries are about an inch-long and a reddish-purple color fruit. They come from the acai palm tree (native to Central and South America). I mentioned earlier that acai fruit pulp is rich in antioxidants, but did you know some studies show acai berries may have hundreds of times more antioxidants more than their fellow berry friends, including cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries? Yes indeed…which makes these berries a wise choice when it comes to adding it to our afternoon snack-time.

Prepare ingredients (you can find the Sambazon pure unsweetened acai packets in the freezer section).

Acai Purple Beauty Angel Smoothie

Add the coconut water, acai, banana, cacao and ginger to the blender. Starting the blender on a low speed, blend until smooth.

Acai Purple Beauty Angel Smoothie

If needed gradually increase to higher speeds and blend until smooth.

Acai Purple Beauty Angel Smoothie

Enjoy!

Acai is a bit different from your typical fruit, in that it’s a more fatty fruit that doesn’t digest as quickly as high water-containing fruits. Acai doesn’t naturally contain any sugars either – it’s just pure nutrients, healthy fats and water.

This is one of the reasons why I use it in desserts (I buy it in frozen packets. I love the Pure Unsweetened Sambazon brand smoothie packets best). Acai can be purchased frozen in most health food stores and if not, don’t hesitate to request that they start to carry it!
