Dairy-Free? Yes, Please!
The base of this Winter Spice Warming Elixir Mocktail is coconut milk. If you’re familiar with my philosophy of building True Beauty from the inside out, then you know that dairy is a big no-no, which is why we use plant-based milk for this elixir. For starters, dairy is very difficult for the human body to process. Dairy has two elements that contribute to this:
First Element: High levels of casein is milk’s primary protein. Difficulty digesting protein can cause damage to the intestines and stomach, which can lead to autoimmune and malabsorption disorders and poor health.
Second Element: The second part of cow’s milk is very difficult for humans to digest is lactose—the sugar in milk—which can cause digestive disorders and upset stomach.
Additionally, consuming dairy can cause a host of health issues in humans:
- Lactose leads to gas, bloating and discomfort—decreasing insulin sensitivity and a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
- Since casein is the protein in dairy products, this actually promotes cancer in all stages of development.
- Dairy is extremely acid-forming.
- Dairy is extremely mucus-forming—slowing digestion—leading to more toxicity being compounded in the digestive tract and throughout the body.
The amazing thing about Mother Nature is that she gave us a whole bunch of plants that we can make “milk” from, like coconuts! Coconut milk makes a deliciously creamy base of this elixir that complements the rest of the warming ingredients. Don’t have coconut milk on hand? No worries! Just substitute with another plant-based milk, like almond or hemp milk ;)
Stave Off Stress with Maca
Maca is the stress-relief star of this Winter Spice Warming Elixir Mocktail! After the year we had in 2020, I can’t think of a better way to send off this year than with a steaming mug of stress-busting magic. A special superfood, we can thank maca for providing us with wonderful mood lifting properties.
Maca powder is actually derived a plant from the broccoli family. ‘Maca root’ refers to the root of the plant, which resembles a cross between a turnip and a big radish. This root is divided into categories based on the color of the root, which can be red, black, pink or yellow.
Maca has an “earthy” taste that balances well with the other ingredients (you wouldn’t want to really eat it plain- at least I wouldn’t!). This magical stuff is great for helping your body deal with stress, balance hormones, feel sexy and boost energy! Yes…kinda an amazing little herb. :)
Using maca daily counteracts negative effects from tension and anxiety and is believed to be a great way for our bodies to adapt to daily stresses.
Warm Up with Ginger
Do you know that ginger is a member of a plant family that includes cardamom and turmeric? It sure is! Like these two spices, ginger is a huge powerhouse that provides tons of benefits! Because of this, cultures all around the world have been using ginger for thousands of years, for its various medicinal purposes. Colds, nausea, arthritis, migraines, and hypertension are just a few ailments ginger commonly treats. However you’re feeling, this Winter Spice Warming Elixir Mocktail will lift you right up!
Energetically, ginger is linked to helping out our lungs and our large intestine in some ancient systems. Ginger is a hot, warming, spicy food, which is why it is a perfect item to reach for when you are feeling under the weather.
The pungent taste of ginger invigorates our intestines, promotes circulation, opens our pores, and expels pathogens from our system. It’s considered a broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-parasitic properties. Also, ginger is also an anti-inflammatory. It’s an incredible Feel Good beauty food (!).
Ginger is so valuable for pain relief of joint pain, menstrual pain, headaches, and more. You can see why I just had to make ginger one of the star ingredients in this elixir. As you can see, this food belongs in your life and I just love showing you different ways you can incorporate it into your diet!
