Hi Beauties,
Today our topic is The Health and Beauty Benefits of Castor Oil. If you’re not aware of what castor oil is, it is a super thick vegetable oil that looks like something you would put your car engine.
What is Castor Oil
It’s derived from the castor bean, which has grown mostly in Brazil, China and India and it has been used for centuries in different cultures all around the world, both topically and through ingesting it. I want to cover both right now.
Should You Ingest Castor Oil?
First of all, some people say to ingest it, to drink it as a natural laxative. I 1000000% personally do not recommend doing this. The first and only time I have ever drank castor oil is when my midwife encouraged me to do this to go into labor.
My water broke before contractions started becoming more regular, so we were trying to get them to be more regular, so I drank somewhere between a third and half a bottle of castor oil and it created explosive diarrhea that did not go away for hours.
Healthier Elimination with Detoxy
Any time we were putting a laxative into our body we can actually weaken peristalsis and disrupt our body’s natural functioning. Except for extreme emergencies, I really do not recommend any laxatives across the board, including castor oil. It was a very unpleasant experience and one I would never want you to have.
If you’re looking to release more toxins and de-bloat, check out Detoxy. This something that I love to offer because I have had a lot of digestive issues myself and it’s basically nascent oxygen, it’s very gentle, non-laxative and non-habit forming.
We definitely don’t want to get into habit-forming supplements because again, that can be very disruptive to your body. Detoxy just goes in and is very natural. It helps to release old waste between the side of your GI tract and the waste itself. Check it out for yourself if you’re looking for something like that but definitely don’t try the castor oil.
Castor Oil Benefits
Stimulates better digestion
Some people say that you can also do a castor oil pack where the castor oil is put directly on your skin. You can wrap saran wrap and then you can put a heating pad on top and warm the castor oil, which is believed to penetrate transdermally and to help stimulate better digestion and toxin release.
Positive effect on the immune system
There’s a study published in the International Journal of Naturopathic Medicine that found that castor oil packs may have a positive effect on the immune system as well as liver enzymes and cholesterol levels.
A doctor that I used to work with a long time ago in New York encouraged to do this practice when doing liver detoxes, so it’s something I have tried myself. To be honest, I personally didn’t notice a huge benefit, but that’s not to say it wasn’t doing something.
It’s believed in more holistic circles that the castor oil packs can help. For me, the Detoxy and just changing up my diet was the best way to release and relieve constipation but that’s what some people believe, I want to cover all sides here for you guys.
Castor Oil for Hair and Skin
The next is that some people believe that castor oil is really great for your skin and for your hair. This is topically, they say that castor oil can clear up acne. It has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which of course is why it would be also good for some forms of acne.
It can also be nourishing to the hair and the scalp to help boost hair growth and some people even use it to grow eyelashes. I have used more sesame oil on my own hair, but I think any type of massage and scalp massage is going to be great for hair growth.
As you guys can probably tell I’m not the hugest fan of castor oil. I think it’s pretty thick and pretty nasty. However, I do love to hear from you so please leave in the comments if you have felt that it has helped to boost your hair growth.
I do want to say that for hair, a scalp massage is great and using hair rinses like apple cider vinegar to clear residue. Also, building healthy hair from the inside out is very important with amino acids, foods like tempeh and beans and nutritional yeast. These foods are high in protein and B vitamins which are really great for your hair as well.
In Closing
That’s my take on castor oil. Again, just to sum up, I don’t recommend drinking it internally. If you want to try a castor oil pack, if you want to try applying it externally, it certainly is a long tradition there and you can see if you find benefits.
