I wanted to share something with you guys that I saw when I was driving in the car recently. It was a sign (below) that talks about how, besides soda, sports drinks and juice can contribute to obesity diabetes in children. Shocking!
And the sign goes on to say that the best thing for children to drink is actually just plain filtered water.
I think this is a really great message to put out. I’ve had a lot of different clients that I’ve worked with that have children. What we’ve done a lot of the times when their children want something sweet (instead of giving them some type of pasteurized juice box) is to make a sweeter version of the Glowing Green Smoothie with fresh or frozen strawberries, an extra banana or some other sweeter (fruit-based) combination. And at Glow Bio, our most popular kid’s smoothie is something called the “Goji Fruit Beauty”, which has strawberries in it.
I’ve found that strawberries are really easy to add to a beverage and they are a sweet fruit that kids really like a lot. You could try doing something like that or even have some cut up fruit around for when they want snacks.
I think it’s a great habit for children to get in by trying to have water instead of juice. I know even here in Los Angeles, there are certain schools that have banned Gatorade, which I think is a really great thing because we all know there are so many additives, preservatives, as well as bad sugars and other ingredients that you wouldn’t necessarily want your kid to have…especially not on a regular basis! While it’s common to give kids juice boxes, it certainly doesn’t have to be that way. Train your kids to just have plain water when they are thirsty! Or you could also try some natural coconut water, which is sweeter and can also be drank from a carton with a straw.
So, try my little trick with sweetening up the Glowing Green Smoothie (GGS). If you have a child, you could even try to put it in a sippy cup where they don’t have to see the color, because if it looks green, then they might be biased. That way, your kids having something really sweet that is also delicious, very nutritious and full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants – all the things that their precious little bodies need- and nothing they don’t.
See you back here soon! ‘Til then, take good care as we rev up for the holiday week.
With love and gratitude,
