Hi Beauties,

Today we’re going to talk about a very practical topic, which is about how to get over a hangover. Now we’re going into the holiday season and I know very well that there are a lot of events, get-togethers, and parties.

You may be having a little bit more alcohol than you usually do, which, again, it’s neither here nor there. This isn’t about judgment, right or wrong, bad, good. It’s a reality of life and a lifestyle. I totally get it.

There have been periods of my life where I drink more than others. Those were the times when I wish I had someone telling me how to get over a hangover. I still definitely do like wine sometimes when I’m out with friends. So I definitely drink some myself.

So Beauties, this is about what we can do to minimize the detrimental effects of drinking. When we choose to drink and we want to have fun and we’re really mindfully choosing when we do drink.

Remember this – alcohol is very dehydrating.

First of all, just remembering that alcohol is very dehydrating.

We want to enjoy our drinks but we want to be mindful of how much we’re drinking because the more we drink, obviously the more dehydrated we get.

Alcohol imbalances our electrolytes.

Alcohol also does imbalance our electrolytes. It throws off the moisture balance in our whole bodies and even down to the cellular level.

Did you know that alcohol can even disrupt growth hormone? It can!

So again, I’m not your mama, but I just want to say be mindful and enjoy when you do drink. But if it just so happens to be around and you get pulled into drinking, I want you to take a second and really think about it.

Really try to choose when you want to drink and when you don’t because we know it does have an effect on our bodies.

Now let’s say we do go the way where we do choose to drink, and so now we’re suddenly really hungover.

Remember that it will take some hours to really clear out of our system.

Hydrate with room temperature water.

I will say of course the most obvious one is to drink a lot of water. I would make it room temperature water, any icy water is not going to be … It’s going to shock your system.

It’s such a far temperature below our body temperature. So you want to just have lots of room temperature water, which is most easy for our bodies to really absorb.

Consume lemon all day long.

I would throw in a full lemon at least in your hot water with lemon the next day.

Lemon is very nurturing to the liver. It’s been shown to help with liver tissue repair in clinical research.

So have lots of lemon the next day. Put lemon in your salad and put it in your water. Drink it in the morning with your hot water with lemon, and that’s always going to be a very wonderful practice.

Load up on fiber.

Fiber is a really great way to help absorb the alcohol in your system.

So the next morning, instead of having something really greasy like a pile of bacon or something like that, just have some oatmeal. Oatmeal is also really great and warming and will just help to stabilize your system.

Or even enjoy an avocado wrap, which will feel very stabilizing in your body. This way you’re having lots of fiber and good fat.

And then we definitely want to avoid greasy foods, which may feel like your go to, but that’s just going to prolong the process. It’s going to make it even more difficult, it’s more work for your body to digest, so it means less energy for your body to detoxify the alcohol.

Avoid the hair of the dog.

Now something that I used to do, and I’ve done this in the past, but something I definitely don’t recommend now at this point in my life is hair of the dog.

Hair of the dog is, “Oh I’m just going to get up and I’m kind of hungover, so I’m going to have a bloody Mary.”

We really want to choose when we drink. For some of us, it’s social and it’s fun, but the next day we want to give our bodies time to repair and recuperate and regenerate.

Try not to fall into that period where your body’s just starting to recover and craving more alcohol again.

So if you want to know how to get over a hangover, here you have it:

  • The next day, drink hot water with lemon. And enjoy lots of lemon throughout the day.
  • Hyrdate with lots of water.
  • Enjoy even more stabilizing foods for your first meal. You may not feel like having a bunch of Glowing Green Smoothie right when you wake up. If you want something heavier just avoid the greasy foods. And then have your glowing green smoothie later.
  • Eat fiber-filled foods.
  • Avoid the hair of the dog.
  • If you’re having a big night out, definitely the next day what’s going to help prevent or get over a hangover is being completely plant-based. We just know that animal products take a lot more digestive energy, so letting your body utilize that energy more towards detoxing alcohol is another piece of advice I have for you.

I hope this helps. If you’re interested in learning more about how to get over a hangover,  check out my book Radical Beauty. It’s my last book that I wrote with Deepak Chopra.

Take care of yourself, choose wisely, and of course enjoy yourself. Just remember… mindfulness, day by day, living in your heart, making the best choices for yourself, and staying true to yourself when you want to indulge and when you want to abstain is really important.

I am sending you all the love in the world Beauty.

I will be back with you guys very soon. Til then, take care, and lots of love.

Bye.
