I am in Maui right now for 9 days, here with friends and some people I’ve been working with. Doubly fun!! It was a bit hard to pull away from work in LA but I’ll be back there soon. Sometimes you have to just go! Otherwise more time will pass and you still haven’t gotten to go to places you wanted to go!
I’m staying right on the water in a beautiful space built around coconut trees, far away from resorts and tourists. Today we went hiking through a magical place on the property of a friend that owns over 60 acres of undeveloped land, surrounded by lots more undeveloped land. It was full of radiant and people-free waterfalls, barely marked trails through a lush rainforest and hidden rock beaches.
One of my favorite discoveries of the day was monkey grass, which is this spongy, bouncy kind of grass that you can jump in, and I certainly dove in! I love when things have an element of an unexpected dimension, like the loss of gravity in two fun activities I’ve done and loved- scuba diving and sky diving. There was also that unexpected feeling in being able to bounce on grass like on a trampoline on the middle of a tropical island. The grass seemed that it would be the static, dense surface of grass that most of us are used to feeling. Instead it was incredibly soft and bouncy! And did I mention all the exotic fruits, so yummy!
The hike today was an incredible adventure- truly magical.

PS: Just found a 5-inch centipede on the floor of my bathroom right under the sinks. Eek!! But it is part of living in the jungle!

Hi Kimberly, how beautiful. I have never been to Hawaii, but it is a destination I plan to travel to one of these days. I’d love to visit an area there much like you describe. Can you and/or your friends recommend a spot where it would feel more remote than touristy? Thanks for your help and inspirational guidance.
Hawaii looks fun! I’d like to see one of those black sand beaches. My brother went a few years ago and told me he paid $10 for a salad. I guess food is expensive there.

Good to hear from you! I didn’t know anything about the monkey grass it looks like so much fun! I showed the video to my coworker and she said: “We need to go there, it looks super cool!”
Definitely will be in my wishing list of places to visit.

Thanks for posting this. I grew up in Hawaii but moved to Georgia in 2006. I miss hiking and seeing waterfalls and picking guava and other ono fruits along the way. And the monkey grass–yeah we used to play on that as kids. You probably see a lot of local girls that look like you could be related to them huh? :) Have fun and thanks for this wonderful blog? I have gone through your post. This is really amazing, I enjoyed the videos with post. Actually I had a tour in Maui two years ago & collected some beautiful memories from there. I had done Haleakala Waterfall Hike, West Maui waterfall hike, Maui Rain forest hike, Maui Valley Hike etc. But after reading through your post & showing the videos, I have come to know the more beauty of the Northern Maui. And I am sure that when I will visit the place again that would be more adventurous tour for me.
