Your skin needs to breathe. Many commercial brands of moisturizers contain petroleum-based ingredients that suffocate skin. Try a natural moisturizer or dab on a little coconut oil. Remember to use organic makeup brands to keep your skin looking its freshest!
Seems great at locking in my skin’s current moisture but doesn’t seem to stay on as long as chemical moisturizers so I keep a small bottle to reapply. Plan around not using on your hands if a task requires firm grasping… Any recommendations of adding other ingredients to make it even better?
Hi Kimberly!
I am a nutritionist as well and I love your blog and book ( Im always sharing it with my clients as its a great tool to keep them on their path to greater health). Im a big natural skin care nerd and wanted to share my tip with you and your fans ( hope its ok to do so! ) – Washing your face with Manuka honey! It might sound strange, but seriously, its the best thing ever and complements using coconut oil as a moisturizer.
I have a very clean moslty organic vegan diet yet been dealing with rosacea on my cheeks since grade 5 and tried EVERYTHING – allergy/sensitivity tests + diet changes, long long candida cleanses, strong probiotics, colonics, clean / $$$ skin care lines , you name it .. About a year and a half ago i started washing my face w organic 15+ Manuka and haven’t looked back since! The strong nourishing and antibacterial qualities along with the gentle exfoliation works wonders on my skin and it feels so luxurious to use. From then on, I only put things on my skin that I can snack on while using it, and the skin happily eats it up as well :)

I have battled acne for years and have currently discovered Kim’s book and working on a slow transition to change my way of eating! Do you know if using this on acne prone skin would be ok? Were would I find it if so?
Thanks!!
You can find coconut oil at health stores! It is non=clogging, and has some anti-bacterial properties! xx
PS- use good skin products for acne use definitely on your body
hi kim how do I use the coconut oil, do I just use on my face as i would use a regular moisturizer and is it good for your body as well?
It is great for your body. I use it on my neck, and sparingly on parts of my face. My main use topically is as a daily body moisturizer.
Hey kim! I love your blog by the way! can you recommend a great skin moisturizer that is not toxic!
hi, were can I buy organic 15 and Manuka honey, and how do I use it?
Look in health stores. Manuka honey is great for teas, esp in the winter. You can use it in a facial rinse with 1-2 tsp of green tea, as it has great anti-bacterial and cleansing properties.
Hi Kim,
I bought your book about 2 months ago after reading about you in a magazine. I’ve never been the “diet” type, but was drawn to your outlook on an overall healthy lifestyle. I’m 25, and have suffered from cystic acne (mostly around my jawline) for over 10 years. After trying almost every anti-acne skin cream available, I did some research and started to wonder if maybe what you eat DOES effect your skin after all. Even though I’ve always been slim, I mostly lived off of breads & pastas. I looked into a few “anti-acne diet” programs and both of them required that I eat lots of meat (yuck!). Even though I’d been a vegetarian for years, I tried eating salmon every day and after 4 weeks saw ZERO results in my skin and felt gross and tired. So I was really excited when I read an article about you, checked out your blog and saw you actually lived the lifestyle you spoke about! Your glowing skin, positive attitute, and high enery was enough to get me to cut out refinded flours, sugars, and dairy. I noticed a HUGE difference in my skin, however, I do still get some acne (I’ve only been eating this way for about 2 months so I’m sure I still have plently of sluge left in me!). I currently use benzonol peroxide 5% which dries out my skin, but works better then anything else as far as getting rid of my acne (my choices are dry skin or painful acne….). Is there any skin care lines you recommend?? Or are there certain ingredients you recommened using/avoiding to help heal ance and promote healthy, moisterized skin? Thanks!

HI Michelle,
That’s great. Have you been cleansing your body? With probiotics, colonics, and other mechanisms I reference in Chapter 6? That is really important to balance your body, which will in turn balance your skin. The dietary changes and cleansing mechanisms have contributed to the biggest change in my skin.Other than that, I wash my face for 2 minutes, and I like a cleanser called Beauty without Cruelty that has 3% AHA acids. I use a washcloth to take it off. Then I use witch hazel sometimes as a toner, and I use a really clean moisturizer. xx
Thanks! I only recently started making the probiotic-enzyme salad. I have to admit it originally sounded pretty gross, but I gave it a try and it’s actually really good on salads! Also, I’ve tried an enema but haven’t done a colonic yet. I’m not normally so easily intimidated (I love kayaking and have even gone sky-diving) but when it comes to colonics…I mean, what exactly does the dr do…? :) Anyways, thanks so much for the quick response! It’s great to read your book, and then actually get to have a question answered by you! I’ll definitely try the cleanser & toner (and maybe even the colonic…) and see how it works for me :)

What face moisturizer do you use?
I suddenly developed eczema about the age of 28. First, I had it on my arms, then my legs. It was so embarrassing that I would cry. So, we broke the bank and I went to a dermatologist who told me it was because of the drought (Co. Springs), and gave me a list of soaps not to use and of things to avoid (super hot showers, in and out frequency in pools, etc.) I had already stopped using the lotion I had been using for over a decade. He told me to use a pure emollient. “What the heck IS an emollient”, I asked. He suggested using Crisco. Shortening. Shortening!! Gross.
After that I did everything on the list but the Crisco. No improvement. I sat on my bed crying and my husband said, “Well, you haven ‘t really tried everything…” So, I gave in and tried it. I did it a few times a day at first. Improvement! My arms and legs completely cleared up.
Why am I sharing this on this particular page? Well, I was once having some footzone therapy and this subject came up and the person treating me suggested I try using pure, organic, unrefined coconut oil. I was told that at least I would absorb some nutrients from it.
So, I did. And, I LOVE IT! It’s not gross. It’s natural. It smells great. It’s stinking edible!
Wonderful! Also, probiotics and internal cleansing may be helpful with skin conditions such as eczema, where the root cause lies within.
Hi I just read your post about eczema.. I suffer from it and it drives me crazy! It controls my life, what I wear, where I go (I wont go out or to gym if its bad), just wondering what it was that helped you.. The crisco or the coconut oil? Are all coconut oils the same?
Thank you in advance
I love your book and lifestyle!
I also suffered from adult acne like Michelle here, and I am highly allergic to benzoyl peroxide and fear most chemicals both inside and out. Between changing to your dietary recommendations and using Sevani skin care products my skin and how I feel have never been better. The cleanser like the one you use, also has natural aha’s, but despite being creamy (which i feared at first) it’s the best cleanser I ever used for my acne and radiant glow, but i also use their complexion corrector tonic and more so it’s hard to know which is the best but I love that the line is vegan and has acai berry and other goodies you recommend too. I have never loved a skin care line like it for both the benefits of anti aging and clearing my skin.
I personally love coconut oil on my hair and legs but not for facial skin…being prone to a breakout coconut oil is one of the oils I avoid.
I do take probiotics because I no longer eat yogurt for them, but there are so many it’s overwhelming, do you have a brand you suggest? or how often?
Love this blog and your work, thank you!

Hi Kimberly,
I just saw you today on Access Hollywood and I am very intrigued. I havent got your book yet but will ASAP. Since having both my kids my skin has changed dramatically. I never used to have oily or blemished skin, and now i feel like I cannot get it under control. One thing I’ve noticed I noticed is that it usually gets worse around that time of the month. I’ve tried different skin care cleansers, creams, toners, you name it. Do you think it could be hormonal acne? If so what should I do.
Thanks
oh and i have already tried your green smoothie,,,YUM
Hi K –

Also, what’s the ideal skin face reminet and what products do you use?

Hi Kimberly,
I have adult acne and blotchy skin. I am eager to jump right into your beauty detox solution diet, however when I detoxed in the past, my skin broke out in little bumps and I havent quite recovered fron it, This was last spring! I also drank a cayenne pepper, lemon, water and olive oil mixture as I read this was good for cleansing in the morning. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to prevent the “sludge” from eliminating through the pores on my skin, when I detox again? I am under a lot of stress, and I do realize how that can contribute to acne flare-ups, but if I could do anything to avoid more acne, or minimize it during detox, that would be great! Thank you.
Hello Kim,
Do you know anything about hirsutism? Could you recommend something that will help minimize the bumps and decrease hair growth?
Hi Kymberly,
I have Hashimoto’s Disease (under producing thyroid) and am on a juice cleanse but have now been reading about kale and other cruciferous veggies being on the no-no list for someone like me. Other cruciferous veggies being: cauliflower, brussels sprouts, collards, broccoli, bok choy, radish. I love eating some of these veggies but not
if it’s blocking my thyroid meds. Appreciate your advice. Thank you.
P.s. just ordered your book, can’t wait for it to arrive + dig your site!

What do you mean by a really clean moisturizer? My skin hates coconut oil and it just keeps clogging my pores. Is there something else you suggest?
I also had acne scars and started doing microdermabrasion and it really helped my skin lot more then anything else. I have used coconut moisturizers to and burt bees oils, but they left my face to oily.
Typical features of acne include: seborrhea (increased oil-sebum secretion), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), pustules (pimples), nodules (large papules) and, possibly scarring. The appearance of acne varies with skin color. It may result in psychological and social problems.
