Spine-Opening Yoga Routine

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNcz6tsZT4A

yoga routineMoving your spine, and keeping it mobile and flexible, helps to raise and balance energy in all areas of your life. The seven chakras, or energy wheels as they are referred to in yoga, are located along the length of your spine. Each one corresponds to different aspects of energy expression in your life, including giving and receiving love, manifesting creativity, communication, and so on. Unfortunately, most people sit at a desk all day or engage in physical exercises which don’t call for full, free-form movement of the spine.

In this around 5-minute simple spine-opening series, you will start to awaken the energy along the length of your spine. Consciously moving the physical will help you to tap into deeper and greater aspects of your energy.

Namaste~

Hi,I am doing much better since the accident.Amanda and the others at Wild Lotus have whipped me back into mobility.I was a personal asst to the coordinaters of the New Orlean’s Veggie Fest and although I hurt myself again ,it was well worth it.It is wonderful being around Vegans and animal rescuers all the time.I go to a chiropractor/rolfer once a week and do yoga every day.I will never be able to replace my disc but I am still flexable.Yes,I do all those moves and do them on a BIO-MAT.The infared heat and negative ions plus crystals really help.Sometimes I put a foam roller under neath and rollout that scar tissue on my IT band.Hope you can come back to New Orleans again.

I just read your article about the effects of dairy, ex. acne. You said you had other reasons not to consume dairy? What are they? And what are your feelings on raw milk?

I have an entire chapter on dairy in The Beauty Detox Solution, which I suggest you read.
Raw milk doesn’t have the detrimental effects of pasteurization, but it is still not intended by nature to be consumed by adult humans. It is mucus-forming, acid-forming, difficult to digest, and contains large amounts of casein protein, cited in The China Study as the type of protein most strongly linked to promoting cancer.

    Hi Kimberly,
I have to sit leaning forward all day for my job, and I get very tight in my lower back and shoulders. This spine-opening routine feels great, and I’m going to try to do it before and after work from now on. My spine must be very closed, as I cannot get my chest to touch the floor on that last move. I’ll keep working at it. Thanks so much!

You look great. What is your fitness routine? Just yoga? or Yoga and cardio? Please share!

BTW, my 13 yr old daughter and I have been folowing your Beauty Detox advice for about 2 months now. we are addicted to the GGS every morning, and have come to love the new whole and organic foods in our diet. We are not completey vegan, but have cut out most dairy (cheese and yogurt are hard to give up…working on it) and are eating meat much less often and choosing better quality animal proteins to have at our evening meal. I am trying very hard to follow your food combining rules.

I have even got my son and husband to eat better (but they don’t know it)! We are enjoying clearer skin, more energy and have even lost a few pounds without really trying (a welcome bonus!)

You are our guru! I share your book with everyone! Can’t wait for a book of recipes, I’ll be first in line to buy it. Thank you!

      Hi Lorri,

I’m thrilled to hear that this helps your spine! Please stick with it. Over time you will have more mobility. Don’t worry about touching all the way down in Anahata Asana- just stretch down, and you’ll get the benefits.

I only practice yoga, and I try to walk to errands when I’m in NY. I know that sounds crazy to some, but I can honestly say that my body is more toned now because of ongoing cleansing. It opens up more space in the body for oxygen to flow so it reaches your muscles. Most people are also chronically bloated.

So be sure to take your digestive enzymes, probiotics, and all the methods I outline in Chapter 6 of The Beauty Detox Solution!!

    Kim,

I wasn’t sure the best place to post my comment and question – but here it goes:
I re-injured my knee (3rd patella dislocation) in March. I was in a immobilzer for 3wks and then had 6+ weeks of Physical Therapy.

On 22 May I had Surgery (MPFL Reconstruction and Microfracture). I am currently non weight bearing for 8 weeks. Along with that being difficult in itself – I am doing physical therapy (which mostly includes leg lifts). I’m being told 6mo until I am cleared and unrestricted/full recovery. Most days I am sitting almost all day with my leg elevated…it’s hard to have such a small amount of physical activity and movement, but my body get exhausted quickly between my knee/leg soreness and crutches I can only take so much.

Is there anything you can recommend as far as diet or other possible exercises to help my body heal/recover and continue to cleanse? I’ve been drinking the GGS for probably 4 mo now at least 4 days a week. I’m still have some ‘bowel’ issues from all the meds I was on (between anethesia and Lortab-pain killers). I do eat gluten free and have a generally low dairy intake (trying to ween off of it!)

Are there any particular foods or supplements you can recommend for my current situation that would be the most helpful?

    Sorry for the long post!
    Thank you!
    Samantha

Hey Samantha, it’s critical you rebuild your gut/immunity with probiotics and probiotic-rich foods. This will also help you absorb nutrients better. Chia seeds for extra amino acids would be good to add daily, as would bee pollen, for it’s potent healing and antioxidant properties. xx

    Kimberly,

I received your video today on the yoga moves for opening up my spine. It came at a perfect time, I found out on Thursday that I need more surgery, but neither me or the doctor want to jump in to it. Back surgery is horrendous! I watched this video and can’t wait to try all the moves, they all look doable to me and I think they will help me to feel better in no time. I am going to do them as son as I can! I am also starting physical therapy next week to help alleviate my pain and allow my spine to move more with less pain.

I truly thank you for taking the time to make this video and send it to me. I love your ideas, and even your green smoothie makes me feel better! You are an amazing person to share your knowledge with just plain old people like me, as well as highly paying celebrities.

Again, I truly appreciate this and can’t wait to get started! I will let you know how I feel after a week or two of doing the Yoga!

Hi Andrea, the key is for you to become more and more away of your posture off the mat, and be present with self-adjustments throughout the day. If you need to post little reminders for yourself on your mirror or front door, etc. that can be helpful. xx

This is helpful and feels good for elongating the spine in a safe way. Many yoga videos include some moves that are potentially harmful to the joints.
Do you have plans to produce a yoga video?
If not, could you recommend a good yoga video that builds strength and flexibility without damaging the spine?

Hey Mike, yes I shot a full yoga video and we are working out the music. Stay tuned!

I would try an Iyengar video, as that type of yoga is really alignment based, so you’re less likely to go off kilter and hurt joints. xx

I love your book and have been following a lot of the concepts!

I did have a question regarding nutritional yeast however. I noticed the most salad recipes include it in the dressing and (as far as I can see) it is a main source of B vitamins etc in the raw meals.
I tried nutritional yeast and got a bad reaction to it (unfortunately because I loved the taste!) …is there anything that you can suggest as a replacement in the beauty detox meal plan??

    Thanks! 🙂

Very nice video! My yoga instructor opens up many of her classes with the same moves you showed; I notice a big difference in my back for the rest of the class. Personal question: how long did it take for you to master scorpion? 🙂 That’s my summer goal, but my strength and concentration aren’t quite there yet.

      Hi Lizzie,
Great! It took me about 3 years to be able to do scorpion in a forearm stand, then another year or 2 to do it in a handstand.
It comes when you’re body is ready, and everyone’s body is different. The “tricky” poses are fun and I love them too, but remember your pranayama and meditation practice is what is most important. xx

    Hi Kimberly:

I read your book and started making some of the changes you recommended back in January.. I am not a motivated cook so I am verey happy to be eating simply and healthy. The probiotic salade has done for me what nothing else in all my life could do. Thank you thank you thank you. I have had friends tell me my skin is glowing. I have dropped 10 lbs and am looking forward to getting back to my most comfortable weight slowly and naturally. My cholesterol count has gone from a combined 272 to 218 in 6 short months.

I am thrilled with this video as I have been at a loss for getting back into excercise meaning I just haven’t known where to begin. I have always loved yoga and so this could not have come to me at a more fortuitous time.

I have shared your book with 3 friends so far and they love it and it is helping them to make changes is their life and health as well.

My favorite is avocado. I eat them every day and I finally have made guacomole, YEAH!!!

Thank you for helping me to change my life and health. Keep up the excellent work. You are a blessing to everyone that you touch.

Loved this!! They used to do this in my mat pilates class and forgot how much I loved this and felt so much more connected to my body. I began taking INTENSE SPX pilate classes, so intense I nearly got sick a couple times during class; so I discontinued the classes and though the students and teachers had phenom bodies there skin looked terrible and mine didn’t look good either. Hmmm…? And when I did mat pilates or interval cardio my skin glowed, enough so that friends commented. I believe there is a connection between doing exercises that open you up and where you are breathing deeply.

Anyways, loved your video Kimberly! I used to do yoga but stopped as many involve chanting, etc. If your video when it comes out is in the same style as this video, I would love to check it out 🙂 !

    xo,

    J ~

Hi Jade, I wonder if the people in your old class were eating high protein/low carb diets. When people eat those types of diets then tend to look really hard and lined in the skin.
Glad you liked the video! Yes my DVD is a full series, in this style. xx

I always love your yoga videos. You give very clear and specific instructions that are very helpful. I’ve recently started doing yoga again. I got some foam squares that interlock and give me a 8′ x 6′ area on my deck outside. I’ve been using Richard Hittleman’s yoga 28 day program from his book. I like the book, but your videos help me see how to do exercises a little more clearly. I am 57 so the spine exercises are just what I need. Thanks for your generous spirit.

This is great. A quick and easy routine to stretch out and feel better. I do this in my normal yoga classes but of course they are mixed with many other poses. This is best for at home, or if you can, at work. Thanks so much!

    Hi Kimberly!
I read your book a couple months ago and it’s become my bible! I reference it or your blog at least once a day! I’ve always been a pretty healthy eatter but I’ve really tightened up my diet to follow the beauty detox solution. I feel great; it’s so empowering! I love to tell everyone how much they can change thier life, just by eatting more thoughtfully. People think I’m crazy but I don’t care 😉 My husband is on the bandwagon with me, we love promoting health!

I’ve always been active and a runner but now, I need to go find a Shiva Rea yoga videos so I can get started on that aspect of health.
Thank you for helping take me to the next step!!
    Marissa

PS, couldn’t you just live off of open faced avo beauty sammies and sundried tomato/macadamia mash? omg yum!

    Hi there,
I love your site, book, and blog. I was wondering what I can put in the GGS instead of banana – I do not do very well with banana, but I love everything else in your smoothie.
    Thank you!

hey kim, im in a really important time of my life right now. more recently in my life, i have decided to embarque full throttle on my journey to mental physical and spiritaul wholeness… its going well except for one part…im addicted to pain killers..i got injured in the military and the doctors started me on some pretty hardcore opiates. i am trying to get off them so bad now, i hate them. however, the physical pain of quitting them is unbearable as well as the horrible stomache upset that comes with. is there anything to help cope with these side effects or any yoga advice to help with pain. it also drains my energy to the point where i feel like my legs will buckle under me, and pain and restlessness pretty much prohibit any sleep my body so badly craves. i eat and i drink fluids so its not malnutrition pulling me to the floor. i want to quit but i have a life that im obligated to be a functioning part of everyday. thought you might have some advice for me.

    Hi Kimberly!
As a yoga instructor, have you ever seen anyone start out as totally, embarassingly inflexible and without grace, but turn out to be a great yogi? I’ve always wanted to be graceful and flexible, but I feel like I have the genetic make-up of a female body-builder. I hate it! :'( I’ve got slightly broader shoulders, larger arms and an overall more dense muscle mass than normal women, and I’m like that without lifting weights (I avoid them like the plague). I mean, I’m not exactly like a female Arnold Schwarzenegger or anything, but I’m afraid that the way my body was designed is going to keep me from achieving what I really, REALLY want. Be honest, is there any hope for me?
    Thank you!

I can attest as a former embarassingly inflexible and without grace person that it is possible to be a great yogi! The secret is to keep at it no matter how frustrating or inflexible you are…you’re seriously see results if you go multiple times a week and stretch at home.
