Ask Kimberly: Answers To Your Most Popular Beauty Detox Questions!

I love and appreciate so much that you leave tons of comments and questions for me. I want you to know that I am listening to you, that I hear you. And I am here to support you as much as possible on this path, which we are all on together.

There are many questions that seem to pop up time and time again, so I’m going to start posting blogs here and there grouping them together, so everyone can see my answers.

Remember that you can also join the Beauty Detox Facebook Group, where the community also comes together for support and fellowship.

But let’s get started…here is our first Ask Kimberly post!

Can anyone give me tips for exercise to match the lifestyle? I can’t stick to anything.  shutterstock_141317737

Do what’s natural and fun for you. There’s no one-size-fits-all exercise that matches this program because we’re all different and love different things.

Try yoga, pick up an outdoor sport, go dancing, go for a hike. Some people like the structure of the gym and machines, but for me it doesn’t feel natural, and I don’t like all the metal machines, stale air and  man-made machines that encourage monotonous movements and reps.

Exercises that celebrate the human body’s ability to move and be flexible while giving you the opportunity to take in the beauty of nature are best. You may have to try a few activities before you find one that brings you joy and seems fun enough to stick to.

It’s possible that you’ll even have to try each activity several times before you really come to love any of them. A bonus of exercising regularly is that it is one of many methods for natural headache relief.

Yoga really matches our Beauty Detox lifestyle, as it encourages deep breathing to help promote detoxification, as well as an all-around sense of balance. Since eating this way and practicing yoga, I’ve seen much more body tone in my arms, abs and all around, then when I used to lift light weights and run all the time.

There is more space in the body, more oxygen getting to the muscles. I practice Vinyasa flow of different types. I like to flow- I don’t practice set sequences moving from pose to pose, like Bikram.

I love my self practice too so much- not being in a class, but letting my body move as it feels, at home on my mat. By the way, I have our upcoming yoga video sitting next to me as I write this, and it will be ready very soon. 🙂 Long-term readers will remember that we shot it in Bora Bora. It is going back to nature as much as possible!

In any case, check out local studios as find a style that you love and feels right for you. Remember to breathe!

I noticed Kim is using low-sodium tamari these days instead of Bragg’s Liquid Aminos (which she mentioned in her first book). Does anyone know if Bragg’s is still okay to use? I love it! braggs liquid aminos

Now I use low-sodium tamari mostly. But they’re both much better for you than traditional soy sauce or nama shoyu (which both contain wheat), but I have a slight preference for low-sodium tamari because there’s less sodium in it (233 mg in one teaspoon of the San-J brand, for example) than Bragg’s Liquid Aminos (620 mg per teaspoon).

You’ll get a rich, delicious flavor from either one, and they’re both non-GMO and gluten-free. Tamari is made from fermented soybeans, and the fermentation process breaks down a lot of the soybean proteins that could cause allergies.

I have a question about coconut oil. Kim says that all fats should be consumed at a minimum. I am confused because of all the hype surrounding coconut oil where people suggest having up to 3 Tbsp per day. What are the side effects of this? I’ve heard that it greatly benefits the skin and aids in weight loss as well as helps the skin bounce back. Any tips?coconut oil

Any fat can be congestive (and lead to weight gain rather than loss) if you eat too much of it, though if you’re going to consume an oil, coconut is the best because it’s easy to digest and has additional health benefits (like thyroid support).

It’s all about balance. I wouldn’t go so far as to recommend three tablespoons of any oil per day, but if you have a day here and there when you just won’t be eating many other Beauty Fats, like avocados, nuts, or seeds, having a little coconut oil is fine as long as you make sure it’s properly combined with other foods.

If you feel that you need to cook a certain dish with an oil rather than vegetable broth, I do recommend coconut oil over others because of its high smoke point and the way it digests in the body.

Also, don’t forget that you can apply coconut oil directly to the skin as a moisturizer to get even more benefits without worrying about toxic chemicals going into your body.

Is anyone else struggling to cut back or give up coffee? It’s the one thing I’m struggling to let go of! Any tips? shutterstock_116937340

Coffee is one of those things that a lot of people struggle with, even after they’ve cut out refined and processed foods, meat, dairy, etc, and cleaned up their diet in all the other ways.

1 cup a day or a few times a week is okay if you must (organic!), but any more than that and you’re really overloading your body with caffeine.

You may be able to trick yourself into feeling satisfied with a different hot drink (warm water with lemon or roobios tea with some almond milk in it, for example) if it’s the warmth you’re craving.

For some people, it’s that simple; they think they’re craving coffee when what they really want is a hot drink to start the day with. In other cases, it’s necessary to wean yourself off the caffeine with fewer cups per day or by choosing options with lower amounts of caffeine (like decaf coffee or green tea).

There are coffee substitutes on the market, too, that give you the warmth and the flavor of coffee without the caffeine, like Dandy Blend. Also, if you’re used to logging late hours in front of the television or computer at night when you could be sleeping, make the conscious decision to unplug, unwind (without a glowing screen of any kind), and go to sleep early.

You may find that you don’t even feel the need for caffeine once you’re well-rested and on a schedule that allows you to get enough time with your pillow.

Of course, as you switch to having your daily Glowing Green Smoothie, your energy levels will start to soar naturally. I’ve gotten many a client to cut back drastically, from say 5 to 1 cups of coffee, from starting to drink their GGS! And one of the best thing about GGS is that you can make them ahead of time the day before with a Vitamix blender, saving you time in your morning routine!

Is there any danger of food poisoning when making the raw sauerkraut (Probiotic & Enzyme Salad)? I am not used to storing things at room temp.probiotic enzyme salad

There are some things you can do to lower the risk of food poisoning, like sterilizing the mason jars to prevent botulism and ensuring that any other tools that will be coming in contact with the ingredients for your salad have been thoroughly cleaned and sterilized as well.

Always pack the mixture tightly into the jars and be sure the lid is closed well. Using spring water to make the brine is also advised. I can’t tell you that you’ll never have a batch go bad, but I can tell you how to lessen the likelihood that it will.

You should also be able to tell that a batch is “off” by the way it looks or smells. If it smells nasty, of course do not eat it!!!

Sometimes the rolled up cabbage on top won’t look so great, but what’s underneath is fine. Use your judgment, and if you’re having doubts about its safety, definitely toss it and try again. Better safe than sorry.

Does anyone know how long the creamy avocado dressing will stay fresh? I would prefer to make a weekly batch rather than daily.

The Creamy Avocado Dressing will stay fresh for about three to four days. You’ll almost be able to get a whole half week out of it, which is much better than having to make it daily.

Keep your questions coming! I am here, we are all here together, present and supporting each other. You are doing great, keep up with great work and living your best life.

Sending all my love,

Kimberly

I have your book on my Kindle and I was hoping that there was something mentioned about cellulite. Turned 51 about 2 weeks ago and I’m getting more ( now all over as I get older). is there any way to minimize/eliminate it? Very frustrating I must say

    Dear Kimberly,
I drink your GGS on a regular basis and eat pretty much in line with your philosophy. I was hoping for the milia under my eyes to disappear, but it is the most stubborn issue I have encounterd in a long time. I am experimenting with different creams and exfoliators, but no much luck so far. Do you know the cause and what to do about it? Many thanks, greetings, Sonsoles

    Kim,
Eating out is a NIGHTMARE… Like most places I don’t feel safe about anything besides a salad with a side of lemon wedges (as dressing), is there anything you do or allow (other dressings/dishes) yourself to make being with friends enjoyable? Ill bring fresh fruit and almonds too but i always get weird looks haha. But when I go out with people, I feel so deprived. Any advice??
    Thanks love!!

You should do a video stream where people chat and ask you questions! And it will even record so that people can always rewatch if they missed it, and still have their questions answered. Anyway, thanks for this. But I do have a question:

Is almond milk (homemade or store bought) considered a “protein” when it comes to Beauty Pairings? I like eat oats with almond milk and mashed bananas sometimes, but I’m not sure about the pairing so I never eat oats anymore 🙁 and I love them! Is eating my oats with almond milk considered a protein/starch mix?

Do all people really have parasites? I have read that some people on the Facebook forum are taking humaworm for this which they buy from someone online. I don’t want to take this as who knows what is in it. I am wondering if parasites are a concern and if so what can be done to make sure there are no worms in me.

I have CLL and have been vegetarian for 24 years….I am not vegan. As of late I have been having an issue keeping my iron saturation percentage up…should be 20% to 50% for me, however, I have fallen to just 6% upon oscassion. When that low there is no way to eat enough iron to bring me up to safer levels so I then must have iron infusions and I take a new iron plus supplement. I am now off the infusions and the iron plus supplement is keeping me at a little under 30%. I have increased my dark green vegetables and the amount of black, brown and wild rice I eat….what would be something else I could add to my diet that is iron dense? Many thanks!! I like this question and answer session! Connie

I am almost 47 years old and my skin is still very oily and breaks out. I’ve had a problem with my scalp for years. Scalp is very oily, breaks out in hard pimples, and gets very sore, but my hair is very thick, wavy, and coarse. Do I need a detox? Do you know any specific ingredients that might help clear my skin and scalp up? Hope you can shed some light on this subject and help me. Thank you so much!

Hi Kimberly! I am a passionate follower of the path you teach, and was wondering (after seeing a picture of your beautifully pregnant client Jenna Dewan) how you guide pregnant woman in this lifestyle, and also post-partum while they are breast feeding. Anything that needs to be added or subtracted from the usual BDS follower’s fridge? Thank you!!

What a great Q & A blog. I started to follow Kimberly when a couple friends of mine suggested her book. I started a weekly “Get Healthy” email blog with friends and family and a couple of the women suggested smoothies. I said, No way would I like to drink my meals rather than eat them”. Boy, was I wrong. I wanted to lose 20 pounds that I have gained over a couple of years. I couldn’t fit into many of my cute clothes. I have lost 25 pounds and feel great. Some of the women in my Get Healthy are dealing with lupus, celiac disease, auto immune diseases and autism in the family. We encourage each other and bring advice to the emails weekly. I add articles from Kimberly blogs and have a blog on my website. Thanks Kimberly for sharing your knowledge, recipes and advice. I have read many books from other well known doctors and health experts but I firmly believe Kimberly’s way of eating is FANTASTIC. Thanks, Lynn Leonti

I’ve changed to a vegan diet and am enjoying learning about new ways to prepare different vegetables. What have the most trouble with is the food pairing. If I do everything else right (no meat, dairy or processed foods) but don’t properly pair my food, is it all for nothing?

    Hi Kimberley,
About making saurekraut, if you place a lid like the picture shows, would the jar explode after the cabbage is fermented because of producing gas? I’m afraid that the whole jar and content would break into pieces and scatter all over in my dark closet where I keep the fermenting saurekraut. How about placing a cheese cloth and a rubber band on the jar? I would prefer placing the solid lid so the smell won’t be so bad in the closet.
Please get back to me on this issue. Thank you,

    Hideko

Thank You Kimberly for all this support. For me personally, i can’t cut out dairy or gluten because i get sick and gain weight. I know this may sound weird, but its true. I get horrible stomachaches and i can’t poop, even thoughI drink a lot of water. Also, when i cut out dairy for a few months i gained 11 lbs!!! But, I live on an organic farm, eat all my own produce, and drink only almond and goats milk. I love your program and have been decreasing my Gluten and dairy and i have no acne now!! I feel better, but still have to keep everything to moderation. Why is this like this for me? Any ideas?

I haven’t even attempted to make the Probiotic & Enzyme Salad because of that fear. It’s the same reason I won’t make my own kombucha at home. Even with your answer, I still don’t feel safe making it myself. I’m afraid it will be “off” somehow, but I won’t know, and thus I’ll make myself sick. Anything that involves fermentation scares me! So I buy those items from trusted sources. Call me overly cautious, but that’s my OCD for you! I should probably take a chance one of these days. What is it they say? Life begins at the end of your comfort zone? I could use a lesson in that, haha.

I wonder about fruits.they should be eaten alone , ok? But pairing fruit juice with nuts is ok? Like in the key lime pie , which I love! What about pairing blueberries and blackberries with grape juice and oats to make a smoothie ? I used tho make this smoothie, with walnut s also, and I love it, also I really would like it again. Oats add nice texture also, especially because I don’t like bananas. So can fruits be paired with a small amount of oats or nuts or both in a smoothie?

Also, you suggested taking a B vitamin supplement for vegans. Is this necessary if I’m taking a multi vitamin already?

I am from Norway, where we drink a lot of milk… I am trying to quit dairy, but I have one question: You say that no other animals drink the milk of another animal, and that no one drink it past the baby-stage; that it´s not intended for humans. But if we´re not meant to drink cow´s milk, how come cows produce milk all year around, whether they are pregnant or not?

    All the best,

    Hi Kimberly,

I like your new question/answer section. Here’s a question I have had for years, and have not seen an answer anywhere:

You and other health experts recommend soaking grains before cooking them. When one comes to cook these soaked grains, should the grains be cooked in the same water in which they have soaked? Or instead, should the soak water be discarded and new cooking water added?

The same question goes for beans.

    Thank you!

You can keep the avocado dressing from turning brown by storing it with the pit from the avocado. There is something about the chemicals that are released from the pit that keeps the avocado from turning brown. I always store my guacamole or halved avocados with the pit on the fridge to keep them from turning brown

Hi Kimberly! I love your beauty detox solution book! I was just wondering, if detoxing and having a good and nutritious diet can improve your overall health. Can this diet help with period cramps too? I get really painful ones to the point where I either vomit or can’t stand up or move or go one with my normal life. I’m sick of always dreading this every month because I know it will interfere with my life always. I know that my body is not meant to hurt if I’m completely healthy. I know something is lacking and wrong if I’m having bad pains on my period. What do you think? Is there any specific foods to help improve and eventually diminish this pain once and for all?

I have the same problem with the cramps. It’s really horrible. I have experienced that more fat in my diet helped. Especially more omega 3 did wonders to me. A herbal en really save remedy is Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis), not the oil but the drops in alcohol. I put it in my tea to evaporate the alcohol.

      Good luck!

What are your thoughts about flax oil? I use it with lemon juice for my salad dressing. I also use a TBSP of it in my morning smoothie. And what about hemp heart? My morning smoothie recipe is 1 CUP chilled water, 1scoop of Raw Vegan protein powder, 1TBSP hemp heart, 1 TBSP flax oil and 1 CUP of blueberries. Is that too much protein?

she recommends limiting the amount of oil you consume. Also, a better source of protein would be leafy greens as opposed to a supplement, especially first thing in the morning as your body continues to cleanse after a full night of fasting. Switch up the oil, protein powder, and hemp hearts with leafy greens. If I have a protein supplement it’ll be in the evenings after my workout. Kim recommends keeping your protein sources to the evening as they are the hardest for your body to digest. That’s my take on it anyway 🙂

I knew it was the coconut milk because I don’t eat fried food, no meat on fresh vegetable juice and vegetable salads diet from January until June 17 and when I did my blood test my bad cholesterol went up so please try for yourself if taking coconut oil or drinking fresh coconut milk will not elevate your bad cholesterol.

The best way to find out what vitamins you are lacking is to have your levels tested with your doctor. So at least you’ll know what you need more of, for all you know you might not need to be taking certain supplements and you are. Also keep in mind that taking too many or too much of certain supplements/vitamins can have a negative affect on your body.

      Hi Caitlin,

As someone who drinks/makes the GGS weekly I just wanted to share with you that I personally use both in my smoothies mainly because I tend to have more of them at home. I have made my smoothies using all 3 greens before and find I have equally just as much energy with them all. I think I remember reading in her newest book (the beauty detox foods) that she suggests mixing your greens (ex. Kale,Chard, and Arugula) and fruit.

I have followed the Beauty Detox Solution plan since the book came out. But I have seen zero weight loss. I have a GGS everyday for breakfast and even started doing one for lunch too, I lost about 1lb, but that’s it. I will say I ate really healthy before this and am not that overweight, just 10 to 15lbs. I do aerobics/dance at least 3 to 4 times a week for an hour. Any ideas why the weight isn’t budging?
Also, I’ve heard you say olive oil is bad because it’s not found naturally that way and been stripped of it’s fiber. But couldn’t the same be said of green juices? You recommend them in your book, but technically you can’t find green juices in nature without processing the vegetables and once processed they are stripped of their fiber too.

It’s been going on for a week now and I wonder if you could recommend natural remedy as I could be suffering from hay fever . Also my husband is laughing at me saying that its strange I am doing all the healthy habits , yet he drinks sodas, coffees, hardly any water, never touches fruit, eats a lot of saturated fat, sugary sweets and can eat meat a few days old and yet he never falls sick, and I am the opposite yet I am suffering. What can I tell him as he is now more convinced changing to a healthy lifestyle is not important .
Also I want to ask you to throw some light on when women are menstruating what are the good foods and beneficial things to eat and whether we should avoid citrus or sour foods or heat producing foods and what type of yoga exercises are beneficial during the monthly cycle.
Thank you for enlightening people around the world for beneficial health.

Before starting your diet I always had based my own diet around different proteins like grilled chicken and often times a snack of apple and peanut butter – always using the brand PB2. As I have started my change of lifestyle and now try to steer clear of meat is peanut butter a good way for me to get the protein I need?

This is addressed in her book – she doesn’t recommend peanuts are they are more prone to mold than any other nut. Try almond butter, sunflower seed butter, pumpkin seed butter (all amazing). Just make sure they are 100% natural and organic (only ingredient should be the seed or nut itself). Other good sources of protein: beans, tempeh, quinoa, tons of green veggies.

However isn’t a seed a protein and if I am having meat or fish wouldn’t this be bad combining of proteins. I am keen to use flaxseed as am a bit worried about lack of calcium, I have read that the seed needs to be whole to reap the full benefits. Any advice would be welcomed?

I know blending different animal proteins together is not advised. The flaxseeds contain omega 3’s, and it is also advised to be cautious of blending fats with proteins. Maybe have the flaxseeds on a night when you are not having meat, or try a minimal amount of seeds and see how your body reacts.

I also do not have a vitamix, I have a pretty cheap blender so when I make the GGS I have to blend each stage for a few mins (usually 3 mins) and once everything is together I blend for an additional 3mins at the end. It’s time consuming, but it should work. I was having the same problem, just need longer blending time! Also, you can get refurbished vitamixes at a discount price direct from the vitamix website (I think it’s under deals or special offers). I am currently saving up for one, the customer feedback is great and apparently they are as good as new!

    Hi Kimberly!
I’m wondering if you’ve got any tips when dealing with hormonal acne? Or actually, hormones in general. Just like Hannah above commented, I too have serious menstrual cramps to the point that I can do nothing than lie in bed for the rest of the day. Also my period lasts up to a week, which I’ve read that when you eat clean your period should be shorter and not at all painful – but I feel as if my menstrual cramps are even worse now! I’ve only been a high raw vegan (70%-100%) for as little as over two months now and I’ve seen amazing and fast changes in such a short amount of time. The only problem I’ve found to be left to fix is my unbalanced hormones. I’m probably being impatient but I would love to know how long will it take for my body to balance them out and is there some kind of natural supplement I can take to help the process? Thanks, Isabel

Ditto! I, too, have been seeing amazing changes in my health, with the exception of my hormonal issues, including acne (the rest of the month, my skin is much better than it used to be!). While my PMS is better (I can function during the day now), I was hoping for bigger changes in this area. I’ve been eating healthy, mostly raw vegan for over a year now (after reading Dr. Fuhrman’s books), and have incorporated your suggestions and recipes a lot the past 3 months, including a yummy GGS every day. So I’m wondering if I should seek a holistic pro to help me figure out these hormones or if I’m still missing something in my overall diet. Thanks! ~ Leslie

Kim thank you so much for everything, You’re so dedicated and clearly helping so many people on their journey to good health and great skin. I can’t wait to get back into a routine after being on holiday and feeling very overindulged!
    Lots of love.

    Hi Kimberly,

I have been vegetarian for almost 20 years (I’ll be 31 in a couple of months). I developed chronic candida about seven years ago and have been struggling with it ever since. My research has led me to this article and several others that suggest that because the vegetarian diet is low in zinc (and has a low zinc to copper ratio) it necessarily leads to the imbalances that cause candidiasis

Do you have any insight? Particularly insight that would allow me to be a vegetarian without having chronic candida?

    Hello,

I have been eating meat and dairy my entire life. I’m 29. Recently, after reading the ,”The Beauty Detox Solition” I have abruptly changed my diet to vegan. I have been experiencing headaches the last two days. Is this normal? How long does this last? Is there anything I should do to prevent symptoms?

    Thank you

    Hello Kimberly,

Love your website. Big fan and follow you on youtube regularly. Wanted to ask you what do you think about protein powders please. I have just found out that with my weight 75kg should be taking 50g protein a day, 5 times a day. If I include eggs for breakfast and chicken for lunch am still insufficient in protein intake so was thinking of starting isopure zero carb protein powder and add it to a banana, peanut butter oat milk shake. What is your view on this or can you recommend a good protein powder brand or what are other natural substitutes to that.

    Many thanks,

    Malvina

Hello Malvina, I’m not a big fan of protein powders, they are generally not “living” or easy to digest, and especially not a fan of anything dairy-based. If you’d like my perspective, I recommend reading more about protein here on the blog or in my books. Thank you!

    Hello Kim/everyone,

Have you or anyone noticed their hair shedding after switching over to a plant based diet? I pretty much quit meat, dairy, and gluten cold-turkey instead of doing transition phases. And I started loading up on a bunch of raw, detoxifying veggies.

My hair started shedding and thinning pretty badly since my diet change, and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it is only temporary.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Be well,
    Randy

    Hi Everyone,

I travel almost half of each month and sometimes to countries where making a ggs every morning isn’t do-able due to lack of blender, being on planes, access to all the produce etc. I was wondering if someone could let me know what a good substitute would be. I was thinking fruit or even an omelette but would love some thoughts and feedback!

    Thanks!

    Hi Kim and everyone!

I have 3 questions for you guys:

    1) Is it a mistake to add some protein powder, flaxseed or chia to the GGS in the morning?

    2) I feel bloated ounce in a while and a naturopath told me that I was eating too much raw food and to cut back on cruciferous (max 3 times a week). How is that possible?? Kim, I have all your books (that I love!) and there is a lot of recipes with that type of food.

    3) I don’t like stevia. What is the equivalence of 1ts or 1tb of stevia for xylitol?

    With love from Canada!
    Danielle

Hi Danielle and thanks for your great questions. First, I always encourage you to keep your GGS pure and simple. The combination helps to go through your system and cleanse your gut with ease. When you add powders or chia seeds (especially if not presoaked), this will make it more difficult for your body to break down your smoothie. We want to make sure your body gets loaded up on the nutrients found in my GGS, first thing in the morning (after your hot water and lemon, of course). Next, listen to your body. When you are first trying to clean out your system you may feel bloated because you’re not use to the fiber found in veggies. Don’t give up. Again, listen to your body and be gradual about how much you take in before you start to feel bloated. Your body will eventually get use to the amounts and will remove unwanted toxins. Lastly, regarding stevia and xylitol, it’s really all about using amounts according to your taste. We are all so different when it comes to our taste buds, so give if a few tries and see what amount works for you. Sending lots of love and support! 😉

Hi Kimberly! I have an 18 month old daughter. she eats a very healthy plant based diet with plenty of fiber and drinks only water, hemp milk or soy milk. But we struggle with constipation in the form of small hard poop pebbles about 1/2 inch in diameter. We tried prune juice and she is not a fan. She definitely eats plenty of fiber and does poop 2-3 times per day but every time it is the pebbles and we can see discomfort. Do you have any recommendations for us. Her doctor is telling us to use miralax but we are hoping to find something different that works before we go the route.

Hi Vikki and thanks for reaching out to me. As always, I encourage you to have your daughter tested by your natural health care practitioner to see what is best for her personally. In the meantime, you can take a look at some of the foods that help reduce bloating and constipation in this blog: http://bit.ly/2H5FjkG However, please pick and choose items that your 18 month old can consume and keep track of the food choices (as you would for yourself), in order to pinpoint what could help her digestive process and what might not be. Definitely incorporate the GGS into her diet and see how she does. Again, consult your holistic or natural doctor. Let me know how you do and lots of love to your family. Keep up the great work! 😉

What are some good fruit exchanges in the GGS? What about the celery and lemon, are there subs for those or are they standard for everyday consumption?

Hi Michle and thanks for your great question. I created the GGS with these specific ingredients because of all the nutrients you will receive and that it’s not hard on your body to break down first thing in the morning. However, here is a VLOG you can check out with some tips on swapping out certain ingredients: http://bit.ly/2Kau23P Just do the best you can – progress not perfection. Lots of love to you and stay connected! 😉
