Hey, Beauties. I’ve been listening to your comments and questions of course as always, and I want to respond to some that have come up about reasons to give up coffee. I also think this is important in light of different health trends going on right now like intermittent fasting where to get through those periods of fasting, I feel like the use of coffee and stimulants, which help give energy and give you a little boost, has gotten really popular.
As always in Beauty Detox and my philosophy, I always say it’s important to look at balance and also how substances and foods affect you overall. Yes, we can say coffee doesn’t have any calories. It may be a natural appetite suppressant in that time, but what really concerns me is that overusing and abusing stimulants such as coffee can lead to imbalances in our hormones, particularly insulin, cortisol, ghrelin and leptin.
How this works is cortisol, for instance, is a stress hormone and when we overstimulate our system, we can get overtaxed, overstressed. We start to get more anxious, and excess cortisol may be produced which can lead to holding on to belly fat. Excess cortisol also breaks down the collagen in your skin which can lead to wrinkles. Ghrelin and leptin are different hormones associated with weight gain, which govern hunger and also satiation. Insulin is another important hormone related to weight, and when our insulin is off, it also induces weight gain. Again, when we’re just spiking our system all the time, overtaxing our system with stimulants all the time, as with lots and lots of coffee it’s like grinding the gears of a car and it is going to affect our hormones. I’m really concerned with that long term for our overall health and vitality. Our chi is our overall vitality. Overstimulating is like a drain on our chi, when we’re constantly revving ourselves up. I think in the long run that could really hurt our balance.
The other thing excess coffee can induce is adrenal exhaustion. Our adrenals are related also to our vitality and making sure that we protect our nervous system. It’s also linked to our immunity, to our endocrine system, to our overall functioning. When we tax our adrenals, I think it’s really aging over time. These are some of the reasons that we don’t want to abuse coffee. Oh, another reason is of course the acidity. Even cold brewed has far less acidity but it’s still acidic and we want to make sure that we’re alkalizing our bodies overall by having lots of leafy greens, lots of Glowing Green Smoothie, lots of salads, veggies in general, and coffee is more acid forming on the spectrum.
If you have one cup of coffee a day and not adding dairy to it, but you’re having maybe a coconut milk creamer or almond link, that’s fine. I know people that are really passionate about their one cup and they love it. But, if you’re having multiple cups of coffee or you’re fasting on coffee or you’re going days where you’re having many, many cups, it’s something that we want to look at and work to balance for your hormones, again, for your adrenals, just for your overall life balance, and there’s so many ways to balance that, getting natural energy from the Glowing Green Smoothie, all the tips we talked about in Radical Beauty, Deepak and I, about great sleep hygiene, making sure to balance your day and night, getting good exercise, the whole lifestyle, a lot more tips here on the website at mysolluna.com.
I just wanted to remind you guys these are some of the reasons that I think it’s really important to limit caffeine and coffee and stimulates in general for the long term. Short-term, maybe it feels like a great way to give yourself a pick up. But again, we’re in this for the long haul and I want you guys to feel healthy and amazing long term!
I hope you guys found this helpful and I’m listening to you guys always so let me know what else you want me to talk about here on the website, and on social. Until next time. Sending you guys so much love.
Hi Kimberly,
I really liked the Vlog regarding coffee. I do drink it sometimes but, definitely not everyday. This was a great reminder of what coffee really does to our health. Can you please share at some point why you gave it up completely. I heard you say one time you read something that made you give it up for good.
Hi Melissa and thanks for your question. I wrote a blog called “Tea vs. Coffee: My Perspective from a Beauty Standpoint”, where I share one of the reasons why I gave up coffee. You can check it out here: https://bit.ly/2yqB3I7 Lots of love! ;)
I have to say when I give up caffeine I notice that I have more energy and no ups and downs but if I want to have 1 coffee in the morning when is the best time to have it? Before of after lemon water, or GGS? Thanks so much!
Hi Michele…Thanks for your great question. You should start your morning routine with hot water and lemon. Allow time for it to digest through your system, since this will aid your body to flush out toxins and help along the detoxification process.
Follow your hot water and lemon with the GGS (and your usual Beauty Detox routine). If you do want to drink a cup of coffee have it at least 25 minutes after your Glowing Green Smoothie (or before, if you must) so it doesn’t acidify your GGS. Let us know how you do and keep up the great work! xo
Thanks so much for your advice Kimberly. I really appreciate it. I love all your books and your site. There’s so much confusing and conflicting health info out there but I really trust the information you provide. Sending you positive thoughts!
Thank you for your comment Beauty! :)
Love this! I’m over coming adrenal fatigue and all the sudden started losing my taste for coffee, which is totally not me! I am very fond of coffee! So I needed to hear this Kimberly thanks!
Lots of love to you Jen…keep up the great work! xo
Thank you for addressing this. After doing the roadmap program, I don’t feel like I NEED coffee anymore. I never thought I would say that! I even used to take diet pills a few days/ week for more “focus”. I’ve stopped completely. BUT, I still really like coffee. Even matcha lattes with coconut milk! Now that we’re moving into winter months I will be craving coffee more for the warmth and coziness I feel from it. So, I might be making 1/2 caff Americanos with almond milk a new thing. It’s good to hear these few cups I have a week aren’t doing much harm. I’ve come a long way to reduce my intake to this. Thanks again!
Sounds like you’re doing so much better Michelle…thanks so much for sharing your personal journey. This gives hope and insight to all Beauties out there trying to make better choices in their routines. Keep up the great work and sending you lots of love! ;)
I love coffee I try to drink one cup a day but it’s hard to avoid it sometimes, how about decaf coffee is that good for me ??
Hi Silva Marco….Decaf coffee usually has the caffeine extracted from it by a chemical called trichloroethylene, which is toxic. It has been used in dry-cleaning and for degreasing metals. If you’re having a hard time giving up coffee, try to at least limit how much you drink to one cup a day. Also, have organic coffee and try to steer clear of dairy products. Hope these tips help you get started to a healthier you. Lots of love! ;)
