Hey Beauties,
Do you know that you can actually eat your way to hydration? Produce contains high percentages of water, as well as amazing vitamins, minerals and antioxidants! And today we are going to talk about 7 hydrating foods that may not cross your mind. Many of us may be familiar with certain hydrating foods, like cucumber and watermelon. There are some other wonderful foods that are extremely hydrating. And I am so excited to share with you what they are!
First of all, hydration is such an important aspect of our well being. When we are hydrated our joints are lubricated, our skin is being nourished, our hair follicles are able to grow in healthfully. It means that our hormones and or organs are able to function in an optimal way. So many things in our body depend on hydration.
HYDRATION HELPS TO:
- Regulate your body temperature
- Protect your brain
- Lubricate your joints
- Transports nutrients and impact your blood volume
What’s interesting is that in the United States it is estimated that about 22% of water comes from our food intake. If you are following the Beauty Detox Lifestyle, then you are hydrating from all the fruits and vegetables you put in you GGS every morning.
For those of you interested in learning more about the Beauty Detox Lifestyle, you can check out my first book, The Beauty Detox Solution.
The percentage of water our bodies comprise of varies. It can be about 75% of body weight in infants down to 55% in elderly individuals.
The amount of water you need to consume changes depending on your activity level, the temperature outside and whether you’re losing excess water through sweat or urine.
- Women need around 2.7 liters of water daily.
- Men need around 3.7 liters of water daily.
This recommended intake includes the water you get from foods.
DEHYDRATION IN RESPECT TO PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE
According to a journal from the National Institutes of Health:
- During challenging athletic events, it is not uncommon for athletes to lose 6–10% of body weight in sweat loss, thus leading to dehydration if fluids have not been replenished.
- Under relatively mild levels of dehydration, individuals can experience…
- increased fatigue, altered thermoregulatory capability, reduced motivation
DEHYDRATION IN RESPECT TO COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE
According to a journal from the National Institutes of Health:
- Mild levels of dehydration can produce disruptions in mood and cognitive functioning. This may be of special concern in the very young, very old, those in hot climates, and those engaging in vigorous exercise.
- Mild dehydration produces alterations in a number of important aspects of cognitive function such as concentration, alertness, and short-term memory.
Re-hydration with water & certain foods can reverse these deficits, and also reduce oxidative stress.
A large selection of my favorite fruits and vegetables contain upwards of 90% water content by weight, but I wanted to share with you…
7 Hydrating Foods That May Not Cross Your Mind:
Zucchini + Raw Radishes: (94% – 95% water) – These are wonderful foods. I talk about radishes in my book, Beauty Detox Foods as a really great digestion enhancing food. I love to chop them up and put them in salads.
Broccoli + Cauliflower + Sweet Peppers: (91% – 93% water) – These are foods you can puree or you can add to salads or get creative with. Have you tried my Vegan No Fry Cauliflower Hot Wing Recipe? Its been a big hit on my website!
Bananas & Avocados: (70% – 79% water) – They are not as high, but they are still hydrating. Avocado is a great thing to add to salads to get all the hydrating beauty fat and good texture. And bananas are just delicious. You can’t juice a banana but it’s still hydrating.
So when you think about hydrating foods, I thought you might find these interesting as they do not typically cross people’s minds. Of course, we know about some obviously hydrating foods like juicy grapes and apples. But these are ones that I wanted to share with you just to show you that if you eat a wide variety of plant foods you can really nourish yourself, including your hydration levels.
We have lots more articles and recipes that incorporate these foods on my website. If you find a recipe that you really like, don’t forget to share them on your Pinterest account.
Lots of love, take great care!
Kimberly
