STUDIES AND LINK ON TOPIC
- A study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Report: “PFAS Contamination of Drinking Water Far More Prevalent Than Previously Reported This 2020 report highlighted the widespread presence of PFAS in U.S. drinking water supplies, emphasizing that millions of Americans are exposed to these chemicals at levels exceeding federal guidelines.
- The FDA’s Total Diet Study (2020) found that over 97% of fresh and processed foods tested did not contain detectable levels of PFAS.
- A 2020 study in the Environmental Journal provided empirical data on levels of 26 PFAS in U.S. market seafood. PFAS were found in most finfish and shellfish samples, with PFOS the predominant PFAS detected. Commercial fish from the Great Lakes had higher PFAS levels (up to 22 ppb PFAS) in some species. The Findings suggested that exposure to PFAS resulted from the consumption of U.S. market basket fish and shellfish.
- A study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences studied PFAS Exposure and Health Outcomes. This study reviewed existing research on the health effects of PFAS exposure, linking it to various health issues such as cancer, liver damage, and immune system disruption.
- A 2023 study in the Journal of Environmental Health Prospectives found that exposure to PFAS may delay the onset of puberty in girls. It was first longitudinal research study to include the role hormones play in the puberty delay. This delay can lead to negative long-term health outcomes, including a higher incidence of breast cancer, renal disease, and thyroid disease.
- A 2023 study in the Journal of Environmental Research indicated that exposure to PFAS in adolescents was linked to a decrease in bone mineral density over time. Lower bone mineral density can lead to osteoporosis and other bone diseases. This study adds to previous research mostly focused on older populations that has linked PFAS to reduced bone mineral density.
- A 2018 long-term study in the Journal of Health Perspectives showed a link between PFAS exposure and increased risk of Type 2 diabetes in women.
- A 2023 study in the Journal of Environmental Research indicated that folate may reduce PFAS accumulation in the body, which may protect against adverse birth outcomes and boost immune health.
- A 2022 study published in the National Library of Medicine found that a high-fiber diet may decrease metabolic disease risks associated with exposure to PFOS, a type of PFAS. Although PFOS use has been phased out, it can still be found in drinking water, groundwater, soil, and air.
- A 2023 Study in the Lancet Journal found that Exposure to certain PFAS may be associated with increased risk of thyroid cancer.

Namaste, loves, and welcome back to our Thursday Q &A show. Today we’re going to be talking about protecting ourselves, creating more resilience in our bodies, in our lifestyle, in our environment, and specifically around PFAS. These are substances that get into our food supply and water. And today we’re going to be talking about how to avoid them. PFAS stands for polyfluoroalkyl.
substances, a little bit hard to say, and they are a group of man -made chemicals that persist in the environment. They’ve been used in industrial applications and consumer products, and they are very harmful to our bodies. So there’s been a lot of research, some of which we’ll cover today, which talks about how these chemicals, unfortunately, can come into our food and water supply and the sorts of health challenges that they can exacerbate. They can contribute to cancers, illnesses, hormonal disruption. So we want to be aware of this toxic world that we live in. We don’t want to be overly fear -based, but it’s really important to put some protective measures in place. And so the good news is that there is quite a bit that we can do to protect ourselves. And we want to make sure that we are ticking these boxes for our health, for our family’s health, and for our

to really protect our future well -being. Everything works together. And so we talk about healthy food, of course, really important cornerstone here. We talk about our emotional well -being, our spiritual growth, and our bodies, protecting our bodies. Our second cornerstone is absolutely vital so that we feel our best. If you are watching this now, we are now also on YouTube. You’ll see that I’ve made a little bit of changes here to my little podcast area, did a little bit of spring and summer cleaning. I like to refresh things sometimes. So you see I put a new plant there, move things around. If you are new to our community, welcome. I’m so glad we found each other. We’ve had a couple amazing launches lately. We’ve launched our Glowing Greens powder, which is a very powerful vitality booster that I recommend that you have and consume every day with water, with your glowing green smoothie, especially around our topic today. This formula also contains spirulina and certain plants which have been known to help detoxify the body. It also contains amalaki, which helps with detoxification and liver support. This is known as the Fountain of Youth herb in Ayurveda.
So it pairs with our show today. We’ve also launched a new children’s book that my husband and I wrote called Chill a Gorilla and Linky Weemer Journey to the Heart, about heart coherence and heart -brain communication to calm big feelings. So please check that out as well wherever books are sold. Let’s dive right into this topic today, which is very straightforward. I want to give you some research. I want to give you tips, how to better protect your body to create more resilience around these chemicals, which unfortunately are around us.
And our question comes today from Oliver who lives in Arkansas. Oliver, thank you so much for being here, being part of our community. Energetically, we all support each other. When you guys ask questions and bring these topics to the forefront, it’s really important because it allows us to create this conversation. Many people are wondering the same thing and some people have never heard of these concerns. So it’s also really important that we bring these topics forward.
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (04:37.39)
You ask, I have been hearing a lot about the proliferation of PFAS in many cities. What are they and how can I avoid being exposed to them? So there is conversation around this. As I mentioned, I’ll try to pronounce it again, polyfluoroalkyl substances, better just to say PFAS, are manmade chemicals widely used in industrial applications.
They are resistant to heat, water, and oil. So they persist in the environment and they have posed serious health risks and concerns. How do we protect ourselves? Well, one study by the environmental working group, who we have had on here several times, Ken Cook, the founder, the CEO of the environmental working group, which does a lot of research around, for instance, the dirty dozen, the clean 15, which foods have the most pesticides in them.
how we can live a cleaner life. They published a report called PFAS Contamination of Drinking Water Far More Prevalent Than Previously Reported. And they found that in US drinking water supplies, millions of Americans are exposed to these chemicals at levels exceeding federal guidelines. We talked about tap water before and how we really need to install some type of water.
cleaning system. We talked about this with Darren Olien before we came on the podcast. It doesn’t have to be super expensive. A lot of these units you can put underneath your kitchen sink for a couple hundred dollars. It is well worth investing in some way to clean your drinking water, especially in this day and age where there’s so much that we don’t control coming in, especially these PFAS. And now the next study from 2020 in the Environmental Journal.
provided empirical data on levels of 26 PFASs in the US market of seafood. PFAS were found in fin fish, shellfish samples, and commercial fish from the Great Lakes had higher PFAS up to 22 PBB at PFAS, which is a measurement in some species. So I have heard this before around seafood coming from the Great Lakes.
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (07:00.462)
And I don’t know if it’s because of the prevalence of factories and companies that are around these areas in the Midwest, but it was really interesting that multiple research studies are showing to be very careful about seafood specifically from these bodies of water. I have also been talking about this since my first book, how seafood
in some ways is less dense and maybe a little bit easier to digest and say red meat on the body, less saturated fat and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, it’s almost like a sponge for toxicity in the water because it’s filtering everything through its body and expelling out through the gills, but maybe holding on to a lot of these heavy metals and in this instance, PFAS.
So we want to be really careful with the levels of consumption that we all have for seafood. Now, those of us that are plant -based, myself included, don’t have to worry about this. We always also hear that women who are pregnant should be careful about seafood levels. Let’s say all of us. Unfortunately, because of the waterways, because of the pollution, because of the ways in which fish absorb these items, we want to be careful and as much as possible avoid.
Seafood from the Great Lakes. A 2018 study by the FDA found that 16 out of 20 samples of protein grown near a PFAS manufacturing plant did contain PFAS. So this makes sense when we’re talking about the Great Lakes. Again, these areas of the country may have some of these manufacturing plants, and unfortunately, there’s leaching from these plants.
into the environment around them. And this is something we want to be extra aware of. And we want to be extra careful of where we’re sourcing our food. And these are the kinds of things that we can’t just wash away. They tend to get really embedded in the food itself. So we want to be aware so that we can make choices. And again, it’s not about being perfect, but where are we sourcing foods on a regular basis, on a weekly basis, on a monthly basis, so we can continue to be more and more aware.
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (09:17.294)
A study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences studied PFAS exposure and health outcomes. The study reviewed existing research on the health effects of PFAS exposure, linking it to various health issues, which is cancer, liver damage, and immune system disruption. So again, environment is a really important part of the puzzle. When we’re talking about our health, when we’re talking about our vitality, everything that’s around us, we want to be more aware of.
And I remember years ago when I started to become aware of having little headaches and not feeling great when I would be in an Uber or in a taxi that had a lot of like Febreze and those little, like those fur cone fresheners, you know what I’m talking about? That would be hanging from the mirror in the front seat. And I used to, I remember when I started to realize that the chemicals in our environment,
If they’re giving us headaches, if they’re making us feel woozy, they’re creating change inside the body. So I started to not be shy about opening the window or sometimes even, you know, getting out earlier. And these are the sorts of things that we want to be aware of when we can control our environment in our home space. We want to be aware of what products we’re using, what we’re spraying in the air, what we’re cleaning our homes with, and not just the foods that we’re eating, but the sourcing of the foods.
And as we were emphasizing once again on the show, we talked about it before the importance of clean water. Our family has a whole house water filter, which makes me feel really good. It was a bit of an investment, but when we tested our water, there were such high levels of arsenic and heavy metals and chlorine. I could literally smell it when we were showering. And so for me, it was peace of mind in cleaning the water of the whole home.
which affects the water that we’re washing vegetables with, that’s going in our clothes, that we’re inhaling in the shower, so on and so forth. So just to be aware. Maybe it’s not feasible, maybe you don’t own the place where you live right now, you can still put a water filter and you can still definitely find a way to filter your water that you are drinking, which I think is absolutely critical for our health and wellbeing. This is a really interesting study from 2023.

Collagen is a very important part of having great skin, hair, nails, and so on. And unfortunately, collagen production in the body decreases as we get older. There’s a lot of conversation around eating collagen to build collagen, but the truth is that your body doesn’t absorb collagen directly. So one of the ways I love to get my collagen boosted besides eating vitamin C rich ingredients like fruits and vegetables is to take the collagen building
protein peptides from Sun Warrior. Peptides are created when the plant -based amino acids undergoes a process called hydrolysis to break them down, which makes this easier for your body to absorb. This amazing product helps to boost skin elasticity while supporting your hair, nails, teeth, and bone health. I also love putting this in my Power Protein Smoothie because it’s just an easy way to up.
the peptides and to boost your skin and hair health. I also love Sun Warrior’s product because it’s organic, non -GMO, and it doesn’t contain any synthetics, fillers, or, of course, animal products. It was the first longitudinal research study to include the role hormones play in puberty delay. This delay can lead to negative long -term health outcomes, including higher incidence of breast cancer, renal disease, and thyroid disease. Anytime we’re messing with our hormones, it’s not great. Of course, there’s endocrine disruptors. There are certain foods and compounds and chemicals that are contributing to early onset puberty. And then there’s delayed puberty that we’re talking about here.
We want these natural cycles of the body to take place in an uninhibited way. These rhythms, sort of like the daily circadian rhythm, the rhythms in which certain stages of life are taking place. So imagine that these man -made chemicals have the ability to come in and to disrupt our system. It’s really harmful. It’s really disturbing. And it’s, again, something that we really want to be aware of.
Another study from the Journal of Environmental Research from last year, from 2023, indicated that exposure to PFAS in adolescents was linked to decreased bone mineral density over time, leading to osteoporosis and other bone diseases. This study adds to previous research mostly focused on older populations that has linked PFAS to reduced bone mineral density. So.
When something comes in that’s leaching calcium, it’s leaching alkaline minerals from the body, it means the body’s trying to buffer acids and buffer some of these chemicals perhaps. And this is weakening our system. It’s weakening our structure. Another really disturbing thing, we hear about the osteoporosis and then falling and having hip replacements contributes to all cause mortality. So these are definitely things that we want to protect against.
You know, we hear so much about lifting weights now and strength training, which is great. But what if there’s these PFAS, which is the same time are leaching away from our bones? A 2018 long term, I’ll get to the good news in a minute. There’s just a little bit more research we want to get through. I know a lot. This is a lot, but it’s important to be aware of a 2018 long term study in the Journal of Health Perspectives showed a link between PFAS exposure and increased risk of type two diabetes in women.
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (17:10.318)
So it goes on and on. This is linked to fertility. Another study from the Journal of Environmental Research found that folate may reduce PFAS accumulation in the body, which can protect against adverse birth outcomes and boost immune health. So that’s a little piece of good news. Folate, when it lots of green vegetables, it can help to protect our body. Just shows that intelligence in plants, when we had the glowing green smoothie every day, hopefully the glowing greens powder as well, which is composed of different.
highly protective, highly powerful plants. Our bodies are protected. We have so many antioxidants, we have fiber, we have these incredibly potent nutrients that are helping to keep the resilience of our body up. So one of the things that we can do is to have a lot of greens to protect our body, ideally organic, of course. A 2022 study published in the National Library of Medicine found that a high fiber diet may decrease metabolic diseases.
associated with exposure to PFOS, a type of PFAS. So this is really great fiber cleaning out the system and also keeping our digestion and our gut health in check. If we are able to keep our guts really resilient and have a really healthy microbiome, we’re able to, this is like the center, like the oven of the body, right? This is such an important part of our wellness that affects so many other systems in the body.
our immunity, our endocrine system, our mental health, right? So on and so forth, our hormonal health. So some of these really simple but powerful daily tools are really important to keep in mind. Eat your fiber, eat your plant -based foods, have your smoothies, have your salads, have your soup. We’re going into summer now. It’s a great time to have more veggie -focused meals if you got a little bit heavier as we were going through winter, a little bit more comfort food. Now’s the time to clean up and lighten up.
and to keep those snacks out for your kids, lots of fruit, lots of veggie sticks. My kids get home from school, got lots of hummus, snap peas, cauliflower, and they’re hungry. And so the first thing they fill up on is all these wonderful, colorful veggies. And it’s something that they’re less resistant to because they’re so hungry at that time of the day. So that’s one of the things that we do in our family. And so…
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (19:36.75)
thyroid cancer. There’s another study that shows that PFAS may increase the risk of thyroid cancer. Okay, so we’ve covered a lot of bad news. We get it. Chemicals are bad. Chemicals create disruption in our organ functionality. They create all around system dysbiosis. They throw our bodies off. They create illness. They contribute to cancer, hormonal problems, and more. We need to protect ourselves. What do we do? So,
The first thing we want to be aware of is how they’re getting into our homes and into our bodies. We’ve already talked about drinking water, especially if we’re having tap water. There’s a lot of industrial waste, unfortunately, that ends up in the water supply. If it’s not filtered, it’s going through the pipes right into your home without any barrier, any type of filtration. It enters our body. Over time, this bioaccumulates and can create a lot of issues.
It’s also in food packaging. So we want to be aware of wrappers, microwave, popcorn bags was listed as a high source, pizza boxes. These chemicals can migrate into food, especially when the packaging is heated. So as much as possible, you want to heat things up the old fashioned way. Cook fresh, but heat things up in your oven, oven on your stove top.
Stay away from heating things up in packages and microwaves. Also cleaning products, household products, nonstick cookware, water repellent clothing, stain resistant fabrics. All of these are ways in which these chemicals can get into your bodies through the skin. And then also through certain foods, again, being aware of where foods are coming.
I can’t have to single out the Great Lakes only, but being aware if your food is grown near industrial plants and areas which have been known to have a lot of these chemicals. So it’s hard because we live in this world that isn’t pristine anymore. There’s a lot of areas where things are not perfect. There’s a lot of exposure. There’s a lot of pollution.
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (21:57.038)
as much as possible. It’s always a great idea to grow some of your own food as much as possible. It gives you peace of mind. It gives you a sense of control over your food. I love the towers that are available now or just getting some food boxes, some veggie boxes for your windowsill if you have a really small yard, tomato plants, any ways in which we can start to consume some of our own food is so powerful. And again, I just
think that making sure we’re getting organic as much as possible. And this is one of the reasons I’m really passionate about the glowing greens powder. Everything in it is organic. And there’s some really powerful plants in there that are anti -inflammatory, help to detoxify the body like the spirulina and the amalachee, which is really wonderful in the chlorella. So you’re able to get vitamin A and iron from these.
greens in a safe way. So I think that should also be in the mix as part of our daily regimen. And then, yeah, just being so aware of, you know, the sourcing of our food as much as possible. Along with that, we want to avoid nonstick cookware, opt for stainless steel, cast iron, other alternatives because any of those nonstick cookware
can contain the PFAS and every time you’re cooking and you’re heating up your food, it’s leaching into your body. Filtered water, I said it at least three times, I’m gonna say it again, couple hundred bucks, filter your water. Please do not drink tap water. Check food packaging. Reduce consumption of packaged foods that are likely to contain PFAS. Fast food is a big culprit. Try to cut down on the fast food for many reasons. The low quality.
food, the oils, so on and so forth, but also because it may contain PFAS, as well as microwaved popcorn. Be cautious of stain -resistant and water -repellent products and clothing, furniture and carpets. All of these are treated with certain chemicals, industrial chemicals, you don’t want to be around them so much. And support PFAS -free products. There are products that are labeled as such these days, just like
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (24:17.422)
BPA became a really big thing with water bottles and baby bottles. So now you can start to check for PFAS -free products. And hopefully the more of us that become aware of this topic, the more that companies will support manufacturing that is PFAS -free. Test private wells. If you rely on a private well for drinking water, you can have it tested for PFAS contamination. As I mentioned, we had tested our water in our home.
and we’re quite alarmed with the results. It’s one of the most important things that I think we did since we moved into this home. So test or assume that things aren’t great since it, again, the Environmental Working Group has shown that most water is quite contaminated and do whatever you can to protect your water. And stay informed. There’s a lot of…
I say a lot of, but sometimes there’s local advisories and regulations regarding PFAS contamination and safety measures, engage with community efforts to address PFAS pollution. Now, there are these local farmers markets, of course, and community -based programs where you can be more aware of where you’re sourcing your food instead of just buying things at the store, which may be grown in places that are near these
near these chemicals and these factories and these manufacturing plants, which we aren’t aware of. Or if you consistently go to the store and you see certain brands, like vegetable brands or things on the label, you can investigate it. You can go down the pipe hole a little bit and call that farm or look up their website online and see where they are on the map and see what’s around them. I think this is important that we start to self -advocate more and more.
and especially for foods that we are consistently bringing into our bodies. There’s certain foods that as a family you may eat week in and week out. So a little bit of exploration can go a long way. Maybe there’s that lettuce on the shelf for instance, or the romaine hearts, and there’s three different brands. And you may investigate and see that one of the brands is actually grown in a part of a state where there’s a lot of these, again, these plants.
Solluna By Kimberly Snyder (26:43.374)
And once again, this piece of research that really echoed for me specifically was that 16 out of 20 pieces of produce that were studied, researched, and next to these plants contained the PFAS. So we just want to be aware. We want to keep our spaces as clean as possible. I’m a big advocate for avoiding microwaves in general and heating the packages of foods.
as much as possible. And I say that gently because I know a lot of us are busy and we want to just make it as easy for ourselves as possible, which is one of the reasons I’m a big advocate for simple cooking and simple meals. Our family eats really simple. Tonight for dinner, we are having sweet potatoes and beans and quinoa and cooked spinach. We make a lot of bowls. Sometimes I’ll make some sauces that my kids like.
My kids also like organic ketchup on their sweet potatoes. It makes them eat them more. We put a lot of, my little one especially loves sprouts and micro greens. Really simple cooking, really simple eating. Yesterday we had a carrot ginger soup. My kids love hot soup. It makes them feel comforted with some sourdough bread. These easy meals can really make a big difference and just feel like they’re really coming from your heart, because they are.
and help to cut out some of these chemicals, which again, come from so much of these food packaging and just more processed, a more processed path. So I hope this was a bit of an eye -opener. And if anything, if you, anyone out there that hasn’t gotten a water filter yet, something you could start budgeting for or thinking about, there’s a lot of ones online that can be as cheap as, you know, a hundred or a few hundred dollars.
So it’s something that I think is really important. Otherwise, I wouldn’t urge it so much to protect your beautiful body and your beautiful health and your families. Thank you so much, Oliver, once again, for bringing this topic to our attention. We will continue to explore all different topics around this and around our Four Cornerstones, food, body, emotional well -being, and spiritual growth.
