Today we’re going to be talking about how we live our lives holistically from a four cornerstone approach. This means the way that we eat, the way we take in physical nourishment, the way that we take care of our body, the way that we take care of our emotions and our mental health and the way that we take care of our spiritual growth, which has to do with awareness and awakening into who we really are.
All of these different aspects of our lifestyle can work synergistically to elevate our vitality, to elevate our wellbeing. I like to reinforce that our strength and our power lies in our wholeness.
When we live a lifestyle that really reflects this wholeness and it reflects our intention to support ourselves in all levels and all different parts of our lives, we really do get the best results. We feel the best. We have the most energy. We look the best as well. That’s important to us too. Outer beauty is a reflection of inner health and inner vitality, and we experience more peace and more grounding and our lives feel more fulfilling and more meaningful.
In contrast, if we hyper focus on one area of our lives like food, or we get into that spiral of obsessing over a body, or norming our mental health and pushing ourselves too much or whatever it is, we start to feel lost. We start to struggle more. We start to feel more anxiety. We don’t feel as grounded, and then it becomes more and more difficult to create what we want, including healthy relationships, including a peaceful life.
We just start to feel more and more off. I’m so excited about this topic today because it really highlights our ability to work on a holistic level and just how powerful it is.

And our specific topic today is Your Lifestyle and How it Affects Your Overall Wellbeing. So today we’re to be talking about how we live our lives holistically from a four cornerstone approach. So this means the way that we eat, the way that we take in physical nourishment, the way that we take care of our body, the way that we take care of our emotions and our mental health and the way that we take care of our spiritual growth, which has to do with awareness and awakening into who we really are. Okay. All that being said, let’s get into our show today, your lifestyle and how it affects your overall wellbeing. First question comes from Charlotte and she lives in Texas and she writes, I’ve been living a healthy lifestyle, exercising, meditating, journaling for the most part, but still eating fish and meat. Once a year, I was just turned on to your beauty detox, eating lifestyle. And I’m wondering how much the fish and meat are affecting my wellness. Can you share some telltale signs of what to look out for?
Kimberly: 04:13 So Charlotte, thank you so much. My love for being part of our community. I am so grateful that we found each other and that we are connected and we’re on the journey together. So, first of all, when you mentioned the meditating and the journaling, it’s part of your lifestyle that made my heart sing, because sometimes we think of lifestyle. As you know, we’re really focused on food and exercise, and we don’t think about the, um, you know, the things that aren’t physical, maybe seem more subtle, but are actually very, very impactful. Our mental health, our ability to introspect our emotional wellbeing. And so I’m so happy that you mentioned that from the get-go and I think that’s really, really important. It’s important that we look wide when we’re talking about lifestyle, not narrow, not how perfect can I be in one thing? So when I hear your question and it sounds, I don’t know the rest of your diet, but if you’re eating a little bit of fish and meat once a year, I don’t think that is where you need to put much of your focus.
Kimberly: 05:22 To be honest, I happen to be fully plant-based and I have been now for over 12 years, 13 years now. So that’s a nice, I lose track of time, but it’s really what we do 80% of the time. That makes the big difference. It’s what we’re doing day in and day out. So none of us eat perfectly, you know, sometimes I eat, uh, you know, the treats that I like. I mean, I was just in Hawaii and I was eating some bagels. I was having a lot of gluten, I sure do love that vegan, coconut ice cream. And I do eat a lot of chocolate at times. So none of us are perfect. And sometimes in restaurants I’ll eat French fries, right? So it’s not about being perfect. It’s like, what, what, what are we doing overall? And are we paying attention to all the different aspects of our lifestyle?
Kimberly: 06:10 And that will give us the best results. I have had many clients that say the most nitpicky things about food. Like, oh, maybe there’s just a little bit too much oil in these seaweed snacks. I know they beat themselves up for that. And I’m like, no, no, no. Look at your diet for all. You’re doing amazing. So that’s what I would say here to you, Charlotte, it sounds like your diet is really great. And I am not a huge fan of fish consumption for many reasons. I think it’s a personal choice. If you want to keep some in, you know, I think it’s okay. As long as it’s not five times a day, every day, there’s just so many toxins. And the oceans now in the waterways, there’s so many microplastics, you know, they say that eating fish per week per month, whatever it is, it’s like the equivalent of eating a credit card worth of plastic because there’s so much that’s filtered through the fish.
Kimberly: 07:06 So from a purely environmental health standpoint, there are concerns with fish not to mention, of course, know environmental overfishing, the non fish catch like the sharks and the dolphins and the turtles that often are killed because of the fishing nets, the, um, energetic reasons, you know, just putting, um, animals in the body. There’s many different reasons, but if you are keeping a small amount in and it feels okay to you, I don’t think that’s where you really need to put your focus. And again, meat, same thing, some reasons, but once a year, think about the people that are eating meat three to four times a day every day. To me, if you’re looking to build your lifestyle more, I would say to put more energy into the meditating and the journaling that you’re already doing, if you want to continue to refine your food choices, look back into the beauty detox solution book, and think about simplifying your meals and food combining and using the proper order so that you can make your own digestion more efficient and free up that energy.
Kimberly: 08:18 But the little bit of meat and fish that you’re eating again, I say right there in that book, and I said, it ever since then, the past 10 years, it is not all or nothing. It’s aim for the 80%. And if you’re in that percentile, roughly a lot of the time go on vacation, we go out. Sometimes we go off, but if you’re going for 80%, you’re going to have great results in food. And I do not encourage you to hyper fixate beyond that, beyond that, it’s just like, you know, maybe it’s making a tiny, tiny little shift here and there, but your energy would be better spent. Like I said, focusing more your meditation, going deep into those other cornerstones, emotional and spiritual, that will make an enormous impact that will open up the body that will quell stress that will positively affect your hormones.
Kimberly: 09:06 That will positively reduce inflammation. And you know, all the different imbalances that come from the mind and not, you know, the minutia of food. Kimberly: 10:04 All right. Let’s get into our second question. All about lifestyle. And this one comes from Ella who lives in London and she writes, hi, Kimberly, I’m getting confused on what is good for our bodies. When it comes to exercise everything between yoga, to Pilates, to weightlifting, what are your thoughts about how much activity our bodies need for overall wellness? I’m looking for a vibrant and energetic life, not killing myself in the gym. Ella. I love this question and I love, love the clarity and the consciousness that comes through in the last part of the question, when you’re using the words vibrant and energetic and not killing yourself. And I used to feel the same way I used to feel like I had to run a certain amount to burn calories, or if I was in the gym and I was doing something like the elliptical machine, I would stare at the numbers and push myself and push myself to, to burn a certain amount of calories. And again, it came down to this limited idea of, um, exercising just to be skinny. And this is a drag and this is a dread and it didn’t really feel good to me. And we actually hurt my knees and it felt like I was pounding too much used. None of it felt, and there was nothing holistic.
Kimberly: 10:53 There was nothing supportive about the way that I used to exercise. Now, here’s the funny part fast forward to today, you know, that was over 13 years ago. Now I’ve been on this path, let’s say 14 years ago. And before that, that I was, it felt very arduous. And now that I’ve taken this holistic approach and I really do mean this from the bottom of my heart, we get trapped into these ideas. That things have to be a certain way. And if we need to push ourselves, it needs to look like this. And then we burn calories and then adds up to this. And then we get the kind of body that we want. Right. I will share that since then. I have shifted away from that very intense, arduous cardio that never really felt good to me, but I felt like I had to do it well nowadays, my exercise is walking and hiking. Primarily, I’m still in a mode where I don’t do a lot of poses. Yoga asanas. My yoga practice is meditation and breathing pranayama. So it’s not that intense working out that I used to do, but, oh my gosh, you guys, my body, my weight, it’s so much easier to maintain. I wouldn’t believe myself saying this w in the mindset that I was, you know, back then I was so stubborn. And so, you know, really feeling like it had to be a certain way.
Kimberly: 12:22 And now I can say experientially, it’s just not the truth. It’s just not what I’ve experienced in my body. I have experienced another way and a much easier way, which is I, I flow with my diet for the most part. I know what to eat. Like I said, in the last question, I’m not perfect, but I know what to do. And I’m taking care of the biggest changes I’m taking care of my emotional wellbeing and my spiritual side, my spiritual growth. I’m meditating. I’m, introspecting, I’m taking more time for stillness. I’m taking, allowing myself to slow down, which means that I’m not reacting as strongly, which means my stress levels are down, which means digestion, circulation, immunity, everything functions better, and it becomes easier and easier to maintain your weight. So exercise for me has become not just about burning calories and losing weight. It’s a way to tap into our dynamic flow, to feel alive, to feel energetic, your own words, Charlotte, to feel connected.
Kimberly: 13:29 When I walk outside, I take deep breaths. I look at nature. I feel really happy. And it doesn’t just feel like this utilitarian approach of burning calories. It’s multi-dimensional. I listened to mantras a lot, or sometimes I walk in the carrier with Moses. So I’m spending time in nature with my child, with my breath, but feels so much bigger and grander than just numbers, which feels so limited. So I feel like I’m nurturing myself on so many levels. It feels very nurturing, very revitalizing. So what I would encourage you to do ELA is to find the forms of exercise that really feel good to you could be walking. It could be yoga. Now I’m not saying that it, you know, sometimes it can feel good to work in the weightlifting and maybe weightlifting already, already feels really good to you. It doesn’t necessarily feel that great to me.
Kimberly: 14:26 Um, but I know many women, many friends, many men, many people in general that like, you know, mixing in some strength with movement. And so I think it’s up to each of us to find that flow of what feels good. I feel like hiking for me, I’m working my, you know, your legs get worked and your core gets worked. And even your arms, because I use my arms quite a bit. So that feels good. No, it may be for you if you enjoy dancing or you enjoy, um, you know, in London, just going to the park or joining some kind of group or a sports team or whatever it is, it doesn’t have to feel like you’re killing yourself. Honestly, that adds more stress. It has oxidative stress to the body, which is very aging, all the free radicals that are created from that. So instead of taking this push push, push approach, why don’t we try to take the flow approach, which comes from that balanced, holistic living, where we feel this flow when we’re exercising, maybe it’s from playing tennis with a friend, or maybe like I said, it’s just dancing or walking or biking or whatever it is, but we want to feel that flow.
Kimberly: 15:37 We want to feel like we’re connecting with the breath and we’re connecting with our bodies and it can be challenging, but it should never feel like we’re killing ourselves. So tune into that one ELA, um, only you can answer that question, but from a wellness perspective, it’s possible. I’m a living example of that, where it’s not pushing and so arduous, but you can still feel great and energized in your body and your body can feel fit and, and lighter and, and, and good. Kimberly: 16:39 All right. My loves, we are back from our break. We have two more questions for you guys. And the first one comes from Maddie who lives in Australia and she writes, hi, Kimberly. I have recently discovered your podcast and I’m loving every episode. Thank you. I especially love your four cornerstone approach to health. I was wondering if you could please tell me how I could apply your four cornerstone philosophy and practices to manage anxiety. Thank you in advance, Maddie. Hi, Maddie. My love, lots of love to over there and Oz. If you’re a new listener, you may not realize this yet, but I spent a lot of time in Australia. I studied abroad there for a year, and then I went back to work there for about a year. So it’s a place, a country that I feel very close to. I went through a lot of growth in Australia, and I also feel a lot of gratitude for the land there.
Kimberly: 17:33 So sending you so much love and a big hug. And I love your question. And I love talking about anxiety because I’ve experienced anxiety and I didn’t always label it that way, but I always knew that I was an overachiever and a perfectionist. And part of that is wrapped up in anxiety as well. And so our lifestyle can definitely support anxiety in very, very powerful ways. This holistic approach can be this, this nurturing, almost this, this mattress for us to know that underneath the surface, we have these tools and we have grounded-ness. And so we don’t need to spiral out into anxiety when it starts to come up and it starts to rear its head. So let’s just get into it from a food perspective. Think about anxiety is, um, well, let’s do a little background here in our you Veda anxiety is really quality of Vata, energy being imbalanced and Vata energy is the air and the wind.
Kimberly: 18:41 So it’s, you know, when we start to feel flighty, when we start to project into the future, instead of being grounded in the now we start to go into what if scenarios, fear starts to come up. We just start to spin in our heads. It’s a lot of Vata energy. So from a food perspective to ground, that Vata energy to ground anxiety, we want Kafa foods. We want very earthy grounding foods, which help us feel stabilized. And, um, again are an antidote to that swirling energy, which just feeds more and more anxiety. So some grounding foods that are very powerful are first of all, seeds and nuts, a lot of earth, energy, uh, Fu vegetables that are grown in the ground, especially beets and carrots, any kind of potato sweet potato, red jacket, potato tubers are fantastic. Also mushrooms have a lot of grounding earth, energy of all different kinds, the medicinal mushrooms, like the chaga and the ratio.
Kimberly: 19:44 Also, you know, your, your normal, um, grocery store mushrooms like baby Bella’s portobellos. And I’m trying to think of some of the, the names. It doesn’t know that shifts a little bit when you go to different countries in Australia, but I think you guys call them baby Bellas as well. So mushroom energy is very powerful, um, as well, and has that very soothing quality body-wise. This is where we want to ground ourselves in our root chakra. So a lot of anxiety comes from fear and we, this is where we want to root. We want to support the root, the lower, the hips and the lower back and this part of our body energetically. So body-wise, I love the idea of sitting on the ground as much as possible. You know, my friend, Aaron Alexander, who’s a movement coach and therapist, um, talks a lot about sitting on the ground and how great it is for your joints and your movement and, and keeping yourself limber.
Kimberly: 20:48 You know, whether it’s a stretching on the ground, sometimes even eating on the ground, going outside, staying close to the earth is a wonderful way to take in more of that earth energy. I like to meditate on the ground outside as much as I can. I play with my kids on the ground outside as much as I can. I like to read outside. So taking your body physically, Matty outside to the earth, sitting your sits bones, your, your literally your body on the earth is going to feel grounding. And again, that feels very good from the perspective of balancing anxiety. I also think from a, um, in this could go into, I’ll save this one for the emotional part. Actually, I have another thing to add there. Um, body-wise I think the way that we move and we exercise, we were just talking about this in the last question, a little bit can also support feeling grounded.
Kimberly: 21:42 So notice how you feel after you work out. There are some practices that can create more of that spinning effect and just anxiousness. You know, for some people spin classes can do that. Sometimes, you know, things that feel overly competitive can like bring up more anxiety. So you may want to shift, you may need things like yin yoga, or maybe swimming or something more calming. So start to notice in times of anxiety, especially how you can best support your body. Another really wonderful, um, practice body practice to quell anxiety is massage, self massage, or professional massage, or a friend, the touching of the skin, the being here and now is an Ari Vedic practice of bringing us into this moment because our nervous system gets soothed by massages, which of course is sooth anxiety. So human touch is very powerful and you can just give yourself some strokes, give yourself a little foot massage after a warm bath, but really touching the skin and nurturing the skin is going to help as well.
Kimberly: 22:56 Emotionally emotional well-being wise, anxiety comes again from that ungroundedness and from that fear. So it’s important that we learn to become the sanctuary to ourselves in these times. And we need to go back inward and soothe ourselves. And one of the primary ways, the first ways, the first tools we want to do is use the breath. So let’s say, Maddie, we feel that anxiety starts to come up and oh, what if this happened? This? And then the breath gets shallow. And then the mind starts spinning. And you it’s like, you’re talking to someone and you’re not really there because you’re just thinking about the future and worrying and this and that. So it’s in these times, Maddie, we go to the breath five in five out, and we put the focus back on the breath. We stabilize ourselves from the inside. We remind ourselves, I have you meaning you have yourself.
Kimberly: 23:54 I’m here. It is safe. I will move through this. Let me be here now. So it’s important to slow down enough that you can pause, take those breaths, notice anxiety, rising up without judging it and just stay with it. It’s when we become frantic. And when we want to push it away, we become desperate. We become annoyed that we’re anxious again, or we bring all these stories to it. It’s it aggravates. It, it amplifies it. But in contrast, we become that anchor. We become the route. We pause, breathe, go inward, and just keep reminding yourself. I am okay. I am safe. I’m grounded.
Kimberly: 24:45 It may help to even do a little voice text for yourself, a little voice memo on your smartphone. And so in times of anxiety, you can hear your own voice, soothing yourself in a calm, calm tone. And this is also a powerful practice where you can really talk to yourself and talk yourself down from that anxiety ledge. So try having those tools around and also emotionally, I find that exit anxiety hits when we aren’t taking care of ourselves along the way in micro ways. So it builds and builds and builds until it feels like it explodes. So it’s a really beautiful practice Mattie on a daily basis of possible to spend some time journaling, reflecting, sitting in stillness and silence, and just really sitting with your feelings because that way they have the chance to be digested and metabolized. And then they’re able to actually clear out and leave our bodies if we don’t allow that space.
Kimberly: 25:51 And I would say most people don’t have any clue about this, or don’t have that space because we’re not really taught to feel our feelings we’re taught to keep going and keep pushing and make it happen and no pain, no gain and all these messages, which can actually be really detrimental. So we’re not taught about emotional digestion, but it’s important regularly to take the time to clear out, to sit, to be. So it doesn’t again, build up into this huge cascade is huge than volcano of emotions that erupts. So really along the way, just like we need to pay attention to digestion on a daily basis. We want to pay attention to digestion of our emotions on a daily basis as well. And finally, spiritual growth. This is the biggest one of all, Maddie here, I’m talking about spiritual growth. I’m not talking about religion or dogma or anything that really talking about awareness awareness of who we are, who we really are.
Kimberly: 26:49 The true self and the true self is the divine part of us. It is the limitless part of us. The part of us that’s below the surface. And when we meditate, we connect to that part of us. And we realize that we are so much more than this one situation or this anxiety about work or this fight we got in with our friends or this breakup or whatever this, we realize that there is a sustained part of us that is so strong and is something that we can always call on. And that will quell anxiety on a daily basis, more than any other tool that I know. Okay. So regular meditation, Maddie is absolutely essential when it comes to anxiety and when it comes to anything really, but definitely anxiety is someone that has dealt with anxiety. I will say that this anchor of sitting in that open space and really, really putting energy and time there starts to trickle into all the other areas of our life.
Kimberly: 27:55 And so we build up all the different parts of our life. It starts from that real core from the inside. And when we start to realize that, ah, there’s this sustainable place inside of me and it doesn’t go anywhere, I can rely on this no matter what happens in the future, I’m going to be okay because I have myself. That is the ultimate antidote to the fear. That is the truth of anxiety. And so I would encourage you Maddie, to check out some of our free guided meditations. I have a process I’ve developed called practical enlightenment meditation. And it’s a three-step process involves a little bit of physical movement and some breath work. And I am affirmation presence, the intention, and I lead you through. And if you go to this Luna app or the website, there’s, you know, it’s easy to find there. And I will say that, you know, really being in that space just it’s so healing.
Kimberly: 29:01 And then we realize we don’t have to fall into this pattern of anxiety anymore. It starts to become more and more an old pattern, something that doesn’t serve you anymore. Something that’s, you know, related to control and, you know, being overly fixated on the outside world. And, um, looking into the future, not being present, it’s really a combination of a lot of those things. And instead, we start to shift into the opposite being in the present, focusing on the interstate, finding real safety insecurity on the inside. And so I would encourage you Maddie to check out these tools. And I love your question. I love that. You’re thinking about it from the four cornerstone philosophy. Question #4 around the topic of: Your Lifestyle and How it Affects Your Overall Wellbeing: Do you have 3 easily applied tips for incorporating spirituality into my life, without it involving religion?
Kimberly: 29:55 All right. We have one more question for you guys. I love this topic and I love that we’re able to focus on all the cornerstones. This last one comes from Natalie who lives in Alaska and she writes, do you have three easily applied tips for incorporating spirituality into my life without it involving religion? Wow. I love this question, Natalie, right? To the point. I love the pragmatism here. Give me three. I like the, you know, you put that number to it and I love that you also brought up this concept of religion because sometimes I think it gets confusing a little bit with the wording. And I never talk about religion personally. Um, spirituality can be part of a religion, but to me it is also just a much more general concept of awareness. Self-awareness self-realization, self-actualization, it’s spiritual growth has to do with connecting literally to the spirit inside of us, to the infinite assets inside of us, whatever word you want to use.
Kimberly: 31:07 But there is a part of us that has nothing to do with what we achieve, nothing to do with what we look like, nothing to do with our work. It is stable and it’s unique to us alone and it’s powerful and it’s infinite. And when we tap into that, our whole lives start to change. We have a whole new way of walking across the room. We have a whole new way of looking at life. We have a deeper calmness and a deeper understanding, and we start to phase out these patterns like comparison and not feeling enough. So this is about awareness integrator sense, Natalie. And again, I’ll leave the religion, um, you know, to, to people that are talking about that or focus on that. That’s not what we are focusing on here at all. As far as your three easily applied tips, that spiritual awareness, um, I will give you three right now.
Kimberly: 32:12 Number one, pause and feel gratitude before you eat sacred pauses are huge part of coming back into the present moment. So it means we’re not just shoveling food in food is sacred energy, right? Food transforms and transmutes and becomes part of us. So if we take that sacred pause, we bring mindfulness and we bring gratitude in. We connect more with our food will digest it better. We’re able to assimilate nutrients better and it’s incorporating again, ritual and pausing and mindfulness and slowing down into our lives. So pause and be grateful before you eat number two, meditate in the morning. Okay. Usually I say meditate in the morning and the night, but if you’re starting out do a meditation in the morning, it sets your energy for the day. It brings a different heightened awareness into your day. And again, I’ll mention our practical Lightman meditations are on the app and online, if you’re looking for a guide and they’re about seven minutes each. So if you don’t have seven minutes to meditate in the morning, we need to rework your schedule. My friends, because seven minutes is not that long, but at the same time, it’s a profound way to use your time to direct your energy and to really feel more connected before you start eating. Before you start having conversations, before you start going into all the ups and downs of your day, it’s a very strong anchor.
Kimberly: 33:49 Number three, I will say that there’s so many to choose from. Um, this is an interesting one. I’ll say that the more you connect to that light, that essence inside of you, as you start going about the world, try to start really seeing that light inside of all the other people that you interact and you connect to, let’s be honest. Some people are going to annoy you. Some people have some pretty aggravating behavior. You may not agree with the values and the decisions that other people make, but at the same time, spiritual growth and awareness means we grow into this awareness of who we are. And it means that we start to grow into the awareness of who other people are too. They are not their behaviors. They are not how they look. There’s a deeper essence, that unique essence in each and every one of us.
Kimberly: 34:53 And so when we can start to notice and see people really see them, we start to connect more with not only ourselves, but other people and our relationships start to flourish. And we start to feel a lot more peaceful because deeper connection means we feel safer and more peaceful in the world. So I’d say Natalie, number one, pause, and be grateful before you eat number two, meditate, especially in the morning. And number three, work on really seeing down into the essence of each person and notice how different a relationship you create when you can really see people. And of course that takes time and some people are going to be more challenging than others, but it’s a really beautiful thing to keep top of mind. And I’m going to really work on seeing people, really seeing them, seeing who they really are. And it’s it’s life-changing well, I really loved our topic today and I could keep going and going and going, but I will pause now because we have many other podcasts in front of us and many other ways that we are able to keep going with these, um, topics that keep unfolding for all of us.

Kimberly: 36:08 I want to leave you with a quote of the week, which I wrote as I got the topic for this show. And the quote is our core energy is the river that feeds all the other streams of our lives. We work on elevating that core energy with our four cornerstones. So while we may come compartmentalize, we tend to think, okay, here’s my work bucket. Here’s my family, my friends, here’s my recreation. Here’s my exercise, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Underneath all of that is your core energy, right? So we’re talking about lifestyle and affecting our overall wellbeing. This core energy is nurtured by our four cornerstones by our food choices, how we take care of our body, I would take care of our emotional wellbeing and how we keep connecting to our spiritual growth and the awareness of the deeper parts of us. And when we do that, we affect this core energy underneath everything.
Kimberly: 37:07 That’s the feeding, the streams of everything else. It feeds the way we interact in our relationships. It feeds the way that we interact with our kids. It feeds the way that we exercise. It feeds our energy to cook healthy meals, infinite ways. So we work on that from this holistic approach and then everything elevates, everything benefits, everything gets buoyed up. So there’s one thing to take away from this show.
