I am here in Chicago, and it has been none-stop! If I haven’t been at set I’ve been making food at home to bring, and trying to squeeze in a little yoga here and there. It looks like I’ll be here for a few more weeks! I’m slowly finding my way around Chicago- well at least the multiple Wholefoods I’ve been sourcing groceries from. :)
Anyways, here is a quick video on the best way to store sprouts at home so they don’t get slimy, moldy and gross! They can if we leave them in plastic containers. Sprouts are incredibly how in enzymes and will help rebuild our bodies and supply us with beauty minerals, so we want to include them in our daily diet.
I always enjoy sprouts with my cauliflower soup recipe, yummy!
Enjoy, and I’ll post more soon!
Lots of love, Kimberly
Hi Kim, do you ever put sprouts in smoothies? I’ve done it before, but I wasn’t sure if that was an okay combination, so I stopped.
Thanks for the sprout storage tips!
Hi Kim,
Thanks for the sprout video.
I have started eating sprouts more regularly, after reading your blogs and this is a great idea.
Love seeing more videos, as I find them even more inspiring..
Bye from Australia. :)
Hi Kimberly,
Im so excited to hear you’re in Chicago. I live only a block away from where your base camp was and have been hearing and seeing (some) of the filming happening around here! I thought I might run into you, and maybe I will. =) What do u think about the city so far? I love it here in the summer. If you have more free time, the only vegetarian place i’ve been to here is called Green Zebra. Actually i just looked at their menu it’s not quite all vegetarian and they have a lot of cheese and pasta that i dont think you’d eat. =P There are some great vege plates at a some of the restaurants but it’s not raw, but tastes great grilled. Hope to see you around Chicago. You should do yoga and pilates in millenium park. it’s free and open to all.
I’m guessing you also recomend sprouting in bags because they’re breathable? I was using EasySprouts – the plastic cup type sprouter thingie – and my sprouts would grow like gangbusters and then right before they were ready, they would go all slimy and rancid.
If I get bags to sprout in instead, do you recommend the hemp or the mesh? I sometimes sprout very tiny seeds like radish, broccoli, etc.
Thanks for the great video!
Sparrow
If you haven’t been yet, try to check out Millenium Park! It’s gorgeous :)
Hi Kimberly,
I live in Chicago and would love to take you to a raw restaurant in Chicago. Email me if you can squeeze it into your schedule during the next couple of weeks (kimbervangordini at yahoo dot com).
Kim :)
Aloha Kimberly,
Thanks so much for the “how to store your sprouts” video! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought sprouts, and had them go slimy and gross. I never thought to take them out and wash them first before putting them in the fridge. Matter a fact I’ve gone through the trouble of growing my own sprouts–only to have them get slimy and gross because of how I stored them. Lesson learned. I’m on my way to the Farmer’s Market now and this time I’m going o follow your system. But I’ll have to use a sprouting bag for now until I can get some of those hemp bags.
This is so nice, thank you! I sprout buckwheat very occasionally on my own, and they seem to ferment (I’m guessing) and produce a very gross smell after a couple of days during my old storing method.
I have yet to try sunflower seed sprouts. I think I tried sprouting hulled sunflower seeds, but I’m thinking it didn’t work quite well. Perhaps I didn’t wait long enough.
Is there any research that I can go to, to study the beneficial nutrients in sprouts, compared to their unsprouted counterparts. I haven’t found any good source that has actually measured the nutrition of sprouts–calories, fats, proteins, digestibility, enzyme concentration, etc. It’s not something I was taught in my nutrition course, ;).
Thank you again Kimberly!
Hi Kim,
Welcome to Chicago! :-)
Thanks so much for sharing this video. I just bought 3 bags of sprouts, and I was wondering what I could do to keep them fresh longer. I put 2 of the bags in the freezer, until I needed them. I’m beginning to think this was a mistake.
Hi Kimmie,
I heard of a restaurant in Chicago called Uncommon Ground that has an Organic Rooftop Garden where they grow veggies/herbs used in their menu! I do not believe it is Veg but I am sure they have options. I have always wanted to check it out! If you need veg restaurant recos let me know, I have a few friends in Chicago that would totally know where to go!
Be well,
Christiane

Hola Kim!!!
I miss you but it is so nice to “see” through the blog always with good tips….specially when I am eating sprouts these days! Slowly but doing it.
Keep us posted about news and your experience in Chicago and have a safe trip.
See you soon!
Thanks for the video. I’d LOVE to see a post about growing sprouts at home! I can’t find sunflower sprouts here, and you’ve mentioned them a lot, so I’d like to try to grow them, but I’m a bit intimidated by the idea of sprouting for some reason.
Hey Kim,
Thanks for the great info. I always try to store sprouts in a container with a breathable lid but the bag is a great option. I want one!
I’ve been sprouting my own at home recently (the low-tech jar method) and I stumbled on this amazing sale at whole foods on sprouting seeds. I totally stocked up but now I’m not sure how to store them until I get around to using them all. Each bunch is in it’s own little plastic package (not super air-tight, just folded I think) and right now they’re in the fridge. What do you recommend?
Thanks so much!
Hi Kim,
I just started reading your blog and I was wondering what skincare do you use on your face? You skin is gorgeous!
Thanks!
