Have you ever noticed how many commercials there are pushing drugs, and telling you to “talk to your doctor” about such and such? Drugs are big, big business! If we were to believe everything that the drug companies tell us, then we wouldn’t really be able to perform any of life’s functions without pills! We’d all need separate pills to sleep, poop, be happy, have energy, not overeat, get our organs to function as they were naturally designed to do…
Want to know a scary statistic? About half of Americans take prescription drugs, and the #1 prescribed type of drug is antidepressants! I personally believe your diet has a lot to do with your moods, and it is important to sleep well, foster healthy relationships and have a job or a hobby/activity where you can express your creativity. Popping pills should not be so easy that half of us are taking them.
The question we need to ask ourselves is how to get energy from farm fresh foods, healing our bodies with natural combinations of nutrients.
Read on for more eye-opening, and rather frightening info on drugs, and drug-pushers…er, I meant pharmaceutical companies:

Just a short note to say I appreciate your efforts to promote a truly healthy lifestyle. I know that you are well informed and on target. The topic of medication is an excellent example and one I have known to be true for years. Unfortunately the majority feel it’s easier and quicker to fix the problem with a pill or surgery than take the time or make the effort to resolve it through a healthy lifestyle change. Even as informed as I have believed myself to be you have enlightened me about much which as added amazing positive changes to my life. So thank you, thank you.
It is scary that so many people are in the dark about this. It’s even scarier how the FDA approves these drugs, pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes in the name of money.
Kim !
You are a life saver !! I finished reading your book recently & it has changed my life already ! i bought a vitamix & stocked up on everything you recommended at whole foods !!
***i have just 1 question- your recipes call for “filtered water” what exactly is it that you use ? I’ve been using bottled natural spring water but I feel wasteful using so much plastic !! are their any filtration systems you recommend- what type of “filtered water” should i be using in my ggs & recipes ?
& lastly, one request !!! PLEASE COME OUT WITH AN ENTIRE COOKBOOK.
I use an under the counter Water Filter from Culligan to keep the Water clean and pure.
the Filter get rid of the extra Chlorine,Minerals like Rust ,Fluoride. Most bottled is Municipal Water from
your city plus it filled up in Plastic Bottles, which is really not healthy
so true ,Kimberly. America is over Medicated.
As a Nurse I see that every day. Sure there are Medication that are saving lives, but most meds are use less. To prevent illness
eat a healthy Diet, exercise, have in general a balanced Life to avoid meds.
Hi Kimberly,
I am a nurse and I totally agree with this! Its about time someone laid it all out there! The problem is people think they need these drugs so they actually get angry at the docs if they dont perscribe them something to “fix’ their issue. Most people want a quck fix instead of taking better care of themselves, so in order to keep the “customer” satisfied, medications are over prescribed. Its very sad really! I’m so grateful that I have a mind for finding better ways to treat my body and one of them is buying your book and reading it from cover to cover! Thanks so much for all you do!
Michelle
Hi Kimberly,
I’m with you 100%. We’re too quick to reach for the drugs and there are many reasons we’ve become conditioned to do so, which you outline very well. Thanks for the infographic. All the best with your book!
Lori
Thanks! Great Article
Thank you for exposing this BIG problem that affects all of us!
It has affected childbirth in a BIG way. There is too much medical intervention in childbirth even though childbirth is a natural event. Women are given epidurals, and induced with Pitocin for so often for the convenience of the doctors, hospitals, etc. and often with negative consequences for mothers and babies. Also they are big money makers for drug companies.
I gave birth with drugs for my first baby because I couldn’t find a doctor to assist my birth without drugs. For many reasons after my medicated birth I promised myself I would NEVER do that again. My second birth, with NO drugs, was a highlight of my and totally natural. After all, birth is a natural event and we women possess everything we need to give birth. It is MUCH safer and healthier for a baby and mommy to give birth naturally. Today, most women are afraid to give birth because of all the negative things they hear about childbirth from health professionals and women who gave birth in hospitals in a negative and dehumanizing atmosphere. Rather than feeling respected and empowered they are treated like they are sick and have to take drugs in order to give birth. There is TOO much medical intervention in the birthing process which too often causes complications and problems for the baby for the rest of its life.
In May 10, 2006, a CNN report stated that the USA has second worse newborn death rate in modern world. “An estimated 2 million babies die within their first 24 hours each year worldwide and the United States has the second worst newborn mortality rate in the developed world, according to a new report.
American babies are three times more likely to die in their first month as children born in Japan, and newborn mortality is 2.5 times higher in the United States than in Finland, Iceland or Norway, Save the Children researchers found.
Only Latvia, with six deaths per 1,000 live births, has a higher death rate for newborns than the United States, which is tied near the bottom of industrialized
nations with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia with five deaths per 1,000 births.
The maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is the highest it has been in decades, according to statistics released this week by CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, the AP/Washington Post reports.
High rate of cesareans are said to be one of the contributing causes.
That is so true!!!! My 17-years old daughter is having digestive troubles for the past couple years (she gets really sick from time to time). So, finally, we went to gi doctor and after so many tests, and scans that did not show anything wrong, the diagnosis was IBS and fructose intolerance. What should we do? Prescription drug. Well, i don’t give my kids anything before researching it on web, so i looked up this medication. It was mild dose of antidepressants. When i asked him what antidepressants have to do with IBS the answer i got was: “well, nothing. It will help her to manage pain”. No, thanks, was our answer and we are now on our own trying to “manage pain” with diet, and peppermint oil, and a lot of wonderful tips from this blog and from THE BOOK. I am a big fan and follower. Your book is my main reference. I only hope that more and more people would understand the importance of the diet in our life. And i think this blog does great job educating people. Thanks, Kimberly.
Kim, you have given me a quality of life that I never believed was within my reach! My depression and anxiety issues dissipated almost over night when I started the BDS. Animal protein and prescription drugs literally depress me now! Thank you so much, you are incredible beyond measure!
On that note, your opinion is vital to me! I know you aren’t a big supplement fan, but I was wondering what you think of holy basil (for its calming properties)??
My fiancee is on anti-depressants (and has been for years). He takes them for depression (obviously! but also I think to cope with chronic pain issues). He has tried several times to wean himself off them, but states he feels weird and agitated, etc. And goes back to his regular dose. I believe that taking these types of drugs makes you “dependent” on them- like your body does have side effects- almost withdrawals when you lower your dose or stop. Then you feel like you need the antidepressant to feel “good” “right” or “yourself” again. UGH. I really wish he didn’t need these medications. Maybe he just DOES need them. I can’t convince him to try and go a month or so without them and change his diet etc to see what happens. I can’t make him do anything he doesn’t feel comfortable with, but I wish I could. I love him and hate to see him on several meds for chronic pain and these antidepressants. YUCK. What else can I do? nothing….
Drugs are pushed on people and a lot of people don’t know that there are alternatives. Of course, so many people really just WANT a pill for a quick fix!!
Great article. One thing it did not really dive into is that the over-prescribing of America starts early. Doctors now, more than ever, are prescribing a wide variety of pretty dangerous drugs to our children – Ritalin, Prozac, Zoloft, etc. The philosophy being, get them used to taking prescriptions early and you’ll have them for life. The drug companies are no better than street pushers. There’s a great song about this called Chemicalization. Listen to the entire tune here – https://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/3591202.
Thanks for the great information, Kimberly. As a Naturopath and holistic healer, people often come to me that are on 10-14 different medications. It saddens me that their doctor just continues to prescribe, without educating them on proper lifestyle, habits and nutrition. Of course, most physicians haven’t been adequately trained in nutrition (but were definitely trained by Big Pharma!). Medication use is rampant in our society and it just so doesn’t need to be that way! Thanks for helping to spread the word about natural medicine and taking responsibility for our lives! Hopefully more and more people will wake up and realize that all these meds come with very severe side effects and if they truly want help, there are many avenues and different types of practitioners that can help.
Hi my name is Donna
I’m bi-polar and I too take several medications, especially for sleep I’ve been on them for 15 years. I’ve been on your new way of eating for a month now, I haven’t not noticed a difference in my energy level but I have notice an ease in my movements which is great because of the medications I was taking 3 stool softeners every night and still having problems and once being in hospital because of a blockage. I’ve tried the natural drinks and serotonin but they don’t work and I need my sleep or a get depressed and my moods change. I don’t know if the new way of eating can help me because all the toxins I keep putting in my body every night but I’m not giving up. Do you think it will help me in any way, as far as cleaning the toxins out of my body?
Concerned

Hi There…
I’m guessing your super busy and replies are few and far between but ill try anyway!
I’m 26 year old mother of a 2 yr old boy…
I have recently been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis . I’m extremely scared and depressed with the outlook being a grim mother to my son.
I flirt with veganism but never really stick wiith it – I have extremely unsupportive husband.
I want to know if my only option is meds?
Is there any foods or combinations of foods I should avoid.
I desperately want to live and long active life with my baby and any wisdom you could swing my way would be the greatest gift.
Hope to hear fr you
A
I have arthritis problems and I have noticed that for me avoiding certain foods help tremendously. The foods I try to avoid are foods that can cause inflammation. I avoid all types of refined flours and sugars/wheat products, etc. I would give that a try for a few weeks to see if you notice any improvement. I would definitely try to adjust my food instead of taking pills. I can definitely tell when I eat the wrong foods and I do suffer for it. Best wishes on finding what works best for your situation.
Can you send me a copy of that graphic? I would like to use it on a informational website (not selling anything).
