It’s officially here…spring! People have traditionally talked about spring as the time to clean out closets and do a deep house cleaning. But what I’m talking about here is a deep spring body cleaning. If you are already following all or some Beauty Detox principles and eating healthy and beautifying foods, you may wonder why we even need to focus on cleansing further- what are we trying to rid our bodies of?
Toxicity and congestion! Even with a great diet, due to environmental pollution, the amassing of natural byproducts of metabolism, eating less than great or heavier choices (hey, no one’s perfect), we all need time to clear out. Yes, during those long winters (whether we live in the cold or not), it’s normal to have even more stagnation accrue, making spring the ideal time to clean out.
As we know, this is not a good combination for us Beauties who are trying to keep up with our Beauty Detox Foods lifestyle! So how do we enhance our cleansing when we’re already striving to live the Beauty Detox lifestyle?
Check these out:
1. Tongue Scraping
In order to help enhance cleansing, the first practice I encourage is tongue scraping. This is something I’ve recently started studying within Ayurvedic practices. There is a huge emphasis in the dinacharya, or Ayurvedic Daily Routine, on oral health.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that our oral health is connected to the health of the rest of the body.
Digestion also starts in the mouth, and it’s believed in Ayurveda that a heavily coated tongue can really induce Ama or accumulation of toxic residue in the mind-body. This simple practice is a direct way of removing Ama from your physiology.
The ancient Ayurvedic recommendation of tongue scraping can be helpful to you, since there are many benefits to this daily practice, such as- oral health, overall physical, mental, and spiritual health.
It’s very simple. The first step is to look online for a stainless steel tongue scraper. Then, every morning, make this cleansing practice a part of your regular routine and in no time you will not only have a healthier looking tongue, but hopefully less toxins and better breath to boot. :)
2. Incorporate Strategic Herbs
Another great practice to enhance digestion is with some strategic herbs and spices. I’m always talking about having your own garden (when I say “garden” that is a loose term that can mean one planter in one windowsill), where you can grow your own herbs (especially super easy ones, like mint, in case you don’t exactly have a green thumb).
This is a great season to bring in more ginger, cloves, cinnamon, which help enhance metabolism and can help your body purge toxins. Try adding these into hot water and making simple teas, or adding them into your cooking. Also try incorporating more cleansing green herbs like basil, parsley and mint, as well as the spring vegetables or watercress and arugula. They are loaded with astringent properties and have antiseptic qualities that help clean out your blood.
Start incorporating more of these greens into your cooking and don’t be afraid to experiment and be creative! For instance I started adding some watercress to my coconut oil and tamari stir-fried tempeh and veggie plates lately and it’s surprisingly delish!
3. Hot Water With Lemon
The third practice is one you have heard me talk about all the time and shouldn’t be underestimated- drinking hot water with lemon. This is a core part of our Beauty Detox daily routine, particularly in the morning, and is something you can increase your intake of during the spring months.
To maximize cleansing benefits, try doing this twice a day. First get into the habit of drinking one hot mug of water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed in, first thing in the morning. Refresh yourself throughout the day with cool lemon water.
Then also repeat having the hot water with lemon in the evenings. This will add further assistance to your liver, as the enzymes in lemon have been shown to help your liver regenerate, and has an all around cleansing affect…plus the added bonus of Vitamin C. Check out my One Day Cleanse here!
4. Dry Skin Brushing
The fourth great practice we should be incorporating into our routines is dry skin brushing. This is something that I must admit, I get lazy with at times, but it was a practice that we discussed when I studied at the Wigmore Institute.
Dry skin brushing will not only stimulate your lymphatics, but will stimulate detoxification, and enhance the cleansing out your system. In addition, the exfoliation will also remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, helping to prevent dullness and the elimination of toxins.
It’s very simple. Grab yourself a stiff bristled brush at any health market or online for under $20 and start by brushing up towards your heart. It’s just getting into the practice of actually doing it.
I know we all get extremely busy but I want you to know, that I am going to to be committed to dry skin brushing- right alongside you! ;)
Well there it is, my five tips for cleaning out for spring and making you beautiful from the inside out! I hope you find these practices helpful and will start a healthy trend by sharing these with your workmates and loved ones.
Please let us know what your favorite practice is and how it’s working for you! ;)
See you back here soon. Have a beautiful day.
Lots of love,
Kimberly
Are you supposed to tongue scrape before or after you brush your teeth? I have always been confused about this and no one ever speaks to it when they discuss tongue scraping. Thank you!
Hi Megan…You can clean your tongue before or after you brush your teeth – no particular cleaning order seems to make too much of a difference. It’s being sure to rinse your mouth either way and keeping the scraper clean after use. Lots of love! ;)
I learned that you do it as soon as you get up and before you drink anything. I love this post. These are all things I used to do and I will start doing them again. I’ve never quit the tongue scraping though and use a tablespoon to scrape it with.
Thanks for checking this post out Kim and happy scraping! ;)
Regular tongue scraping makes you very sensitive and aware of any slightest accumulation of ama inside your mouth. You will know the difference right away and will probably want to do this first thing in the morning before any water drinking or toothbrushing. I sometimes feel the temptation to do a brisk scraping in the middle of the night if I get up to pee :) kind of obsessed, I know.
A regular spoon is also very effective as a tongue scraper.
Thanks for sharing Michelle…lots of love to you! ;)
Does the water have to be hot for the lemon water in the morning? Can it be room temperature and still work as well? Also, the Beauty Detox book says to have a pint of water with a probiotic after you have the lemon water. How much time should a person allow in between the lemon water and the pint of water? Will this dilute the effectiveness of the lemon water?
