Apples are made up of a fiber called pectin. In fact, apples contain the highest amount of this soluble and insoluble fiber compared to other fruits. 75% of the fiber in apples comes from pectin. That’s a lot of powerful working fiber, and it’s perfect for the holidays. Getting good soluble fiber can actually help create stable blood sugar levels. As a result, you won’t feel the urge to reach for that not-so-healthy cookie. And insoluble fiber works like a magic scrubber in your digestive tract. This means cleaner blood, which equals brighter beauty and a more radiant you!
Want another boost for your digestive system? Our Feel Good Digestive Enzymes effectively break down stubborn macronutrients in your food like protein, carbs and fat, which can reduce gas and bloating as well as improve nutrient absorption. Why spend more on healthy and organic food if your body doesn’t reap the benefits? Try adding this supplement to your daily practice helps to ensure you will get the most out of every holiday meal.
The skin on apples comes with special powers too. Apple’s skin contains quercetin, an antioxidant helpful in boosting your holiday beauty. Quercetin works to prevent damage to individual cells in your body and your skin. So while those traditional sugary desserts might put a damper your system, my Holiday Apple Mint Chip Vegan Ice Cream will do quite the opposite.
Connecting to the Seasons
You’ll find that apples are extra tasty and delicious during the winter season. Why? you might ask. Many of us don’t know which fruits and vegetables are actually in season because we have access to them all year long. Here is a quick little lesson: apples are a winter crop! Go to an apple farm and you’ll see the trees loaded with these beautiful gems during these cooler months.
In Ayurveda, we call eating seasonally ritucharya. When you fill your plates with ingredients that are ripest during the season, you really gett into the rhythm with nature. Plus your dishes pop with flavor and you’re likely getting more nutrients out of every bite. In fact, studies out of the National Institutes of Health show that fruits that naturally ripen have different profiles than those that are artificially ripened. Who would have known?!
Eating seasonally is also better for the environment and for your wallet! I always like to try and get my produce from my local farmers market. This is one way to guarantee you are getting fruits and veggies that are naturally ripened and at their prime. When you shop locally like this, not only are you helping out your neighboring farmer. You are also helping out your neighboring soil. Our soil needs as much love as it can get, so by supporting small farmers, you are helping give that love!
Mighty Miracles of Mint
Let me not forget to mention the wonderful gifts that mint brings! Mint is a powerful aid in boosting digestive health. This is key for the holidays because all too often we might overindulge in foods that aren’t properly food-combined. Mint is a miracle herb! And it is super mighty! Small amounts of mint can help soothe our guts of indigestion or inflammation when it needs help the most.
Speaking of overindulging on foods, our new and improved Feel Good Detoxy 2.0 can aid your elimination of daily toxins in a safe and effective way with no harsh or irritating herbs that create discomfort or dependency. So there is no need for you to overburden your intestinal health. Oxygen, delivered this way, improves detoxification and supports the growth of friendly bacteria which leads to better digestive and intestinal health and increased vitality.
Mint adds a delicious freshness to about everything you add it to. I just love how easily it grows too! If you are looking for a last-minute holiday gift, here is a thought. Print out my Holiday Apple Mint Chip Vegan Ice Cream recipe and pair it with a mint plant. Your loved one can keep it in their kitchen’s natural light during winter and let it grow. And then when they are ready to make a holiday treat, pick just a few leaves as needed. Your friends will love the idea of making their own ice cream with plants from their herb garden. Who knew enjoying my Holiday Apple Mint Chip Vegan Ice Cream be such a gift for your health and beauty?!
Love and Cacao
Speaking about love, this delicious recipe also includes cacao. I just love cacao and perhaps that’s because it promotes feelings of love and joy. The two feelings that the holidays are all about! Cacao contains the neurotransmitter anandamide, known as the “bliss chemical”. In Ayurveda, we say that when you have a little cacao you are opening up the energy of your heart chakra, Anahata. The energy of Anahata is the perfect gift to transpire during this season!
Cacao is a great source of antioxidants. There are nearly four times the amount of antioxidants in cacao as there are in regular processed dark chocolate and 20 times more than blueberries! But don’t go over indulging in cacao quite yet. This delicious treat does still come with its fair share of theobromine, resulting in similar effects as caffeine. So while we love cacao and it makes a great addition to my Holiday Apple Mint Chip Vegan Ice Cream recipe, we like to use it sparingly so we aren’t up all hours of the night.
