This week’s topic is: How the Powerful Mind Body Spirit Connection Can Affect Our Health
I’m very excited to get into this topic today. There’s quite a bit of emerging research connecting the mind and the body and stress health and all these unseen things. Our emotions are self connection, which is how I define spiritual growth as really connecting with who we really are. The formless part of us.
We could say the soul spirit individualized is the voice of our heart, the voice of our intuition, whatever language we want to use, the parts that are beneath just what our physical features are. These are the tiny, tiny components of who we really are. And we start to realize more and more that connecting to this part of us is where our potential is. And this is where we can impact things like our hormones, our endocrine system, our nervous system, and our immune system, and the physical is affected by the formless. So we’re going to get into that a bit in our show today.

Kimberly: 00:01 Namaste loves and welcome back to our Thursday Q&A show where our topic today is How the Powerful Mind Body Spirit Connection Can Affect Our Health. And this week, of course, we are covering the spiritual cornerstone. We rotate around these days for our Q&A so between food body, emotional wellbeing and spiritual growth, which are the cornerstones of total wellness and total health that we believe are very important to address in order to live your best, most vital, healthy, energetic, inspired, amazing life. And so I’m very excited to get into this topic today, and there’s quite a bit of emerging research, connecting the mind and the body and stress health and all these unseen things. So to speak, our emotions are self connection, which is how I define spiritual growth is really connecting in with who we really are. The formless part of us.
Kimberly: 01:00 We could say the soul spirit, individualized, the voice of our heart, the voice of our intuition, whatever it is, whatever language we wanna use, the parts that are beneath just what our physical features are, which is the tiny, tiny component of who we really are. And we start to realize more and more that connecting to this part of us is where our potential is. And this is where we can impact things like our hormones and our endocrine system and our nervous system and our immune system, and the physical is affected by the formless. So we’re gonna get into that a bit in our show today.

Kimberly: 02:46 And also my last last reminder is that our new book baby is out in the world. It is called You Are More More Than You Think You Are – Practical Enlightenment For Everyday Life and I actually have a copy right here in my hands. It’s a hardcover book, and it’s a practical guide really for connecting to this deeper place. I think it’s easy to focus just on recipes and fitness and things we can see, but we don’t really move the needle forward in our lives. If we just stay on the surface and these things are important, they’re part of our cornerstones. But when we really go into clearing blocks, getting past fear, connecting to our real gifts and letting that come out and creativity that’s when we create real abundance and success. So this book is a practical guide on, on ways in which I’ve been able to utilize teachings and practices and modalities that I’m very thrilled and very honored to share with you. The chapters are short and succinct, and it’s very readable, which I think is important in this day and age.
Question around the topic of: How the Powerful Mind Body Spirit Connection Can Affect Our Health: Hello Kimberly, I am so thankful for your podcast! I have always been a bit of a worrier and over the last two years with the pandemic and everything else going on in the world it has increased by stress and anxiety to the point where I get breakouts and stomach aches and always feel on edge. What can I do to pull myself out of this pattern and let go of all this stress and anxiety?
Kimberly: 03:44 So check it out again. You are more than you think you are, wherever books are sold. All right. So let’s get into our show today about the powerful mind body spirit connection and how it really does affect your health. So our question comes from Gina, who lives in New Jersey. So sending you lots of love out there, Gina, wherever you happen to be. I don’t know if you know this, but I was born in New Jersey and my father is a New Jersey boy. So I was there till I was about three years old. And then we moved to Connecticut. So lots of love out there to the east coast. And you write, Hello Kimberly. I’m so thankful for your podcast. I’ve always been a bit of a worrier. And over the past two years with the pandemic and everything else going on in the world, it has increased my stress and anxiety to the point where I get breakouts and stomach aches and always feel on edge. What can I do to pull myself out of this pattern and let go of this stress and anxiety?
Kimberly: 04:37 So thank you so much, Gina for writing in. And I know that so many of us can relate to this. The past two years have been very challenging with the pandemic. And now we’re just seeing so much political unrest and things happening in the news. It’s no wonder that our bodies are, are physically showing the effect of just this emotional, mental toll that’s, um, that many of us are taking in. So first I wanna start by, by pointing to some research to Ize this, this podcast, this information, which we will link to in the show notes, which are always available after the show at mysolluna.com and realize, Jen, again, you are not alone. Anxiety is the most common mental disorder in the United States affecting an estimated 40 million adults. Now, I would say that low grade anxiety in different levels of anxiety affect far more than that number. You think about people that have difficulty falling asleep or people that have thoughts running through their head all the time and not really being in the moment. These are all different iterations of anxiety when we’re not really in the present, when we’re in fear of the future, based on past outcomes, there is a level of anxiety that plays out and it definitely does affect our quality of life.
Kimberly: 06:12 Now, more and more research is connecting this mental and emotional anxiety to the physical, including in the journal. Psychological bulletin study studies have convincingly established that stressful experiences alter features of the immune response, as well as confer vulnerability to adverse medical outcomes. So it could go as you know, there’s such a wide variety from autoimmune conditions to possibly diseases and cancer, even scientific research has shown a link between stress and the immune system, stressful experiences influence your mental health, which then weakens your immune system. So everything that we’re taking in, whether it’s thoughts, beliefs, food, experiences, movies, anything that we are taking in through our senses has to be metabolized by the body and the body will feel the effects. So that’s why really understanding that this process of digestion and metabolism isn’t just confined to food, but it does span again, the, the thoughts and the, the beliefs, the things that we’re telling ourselves, and especially the things that are running through our heads repeatedly.
Kimberly: 07:31 So repeated fears or, um, you know, the things that continue to make us anxious. It does have this weakening effect. So Ayurveda has always taught that there is a connection between our nervous system. So that is what is taking things in. You know, we know we have a parasympathetic, a sympathetic nervous system, very sensitive part of us, this whole system that responds and reacts to stimuli to news, again, to messages, we tell ourselves to beliefs and that is correlated with our endocrine system. So all the very delicate glands and hormones that run through our body and our immune system. So this is where the body can start to break down. This is where research, as I just stated, is showing this connection between susceptibility vulnerability, to diseases and sicknesses and illnesses. And so it is a fallacy to think that, oh, it’s just random. And you know, I just happen to be sick again.
Kimberly: 08:33 And physical illness just comes from nowhere. There is this belief in our Ayurveda and other ancient belief systems. And I completely believe this everything is energy. So it doesn’t mean that things are all our fault. Of course, there is a genetic component. There is an ancestral component, but I do believe that a huge contributing factor is our mental and emotional wellbeing. And so again, you think about the effect of fear and how that jacks up your system and creates inflammation and pulls energy and blood flow and oxygen out of your GI tract. Think about what that’s doing to your organs. We really need to understand this in order to make the choice to shift our lifestyle. So we will not be affected in the future at least so much because it does take time to shift our lifestyle. And finally, I just wanna point out in, from the journal medicines, researchers found that mind body approaches such as meditation, distress tolerance and yoga may promote emotional regulation skills that allow young adults to manage stressful experiences and distressing emotions without alcohol and other drug use.
Kimberly: 09:47 So what we wanna do is we want to find ways to regulate our system from within ourselves. So sure anybody can numb with a drink after work or just binging on Netflix or eating a bunch of ice cream. But in the end, these are not increasing our resiliency. Um, these are not moving us forward because we’re just relying on something as a bandaid. So what we wanna do instead is we want us understand that we are the keepers of our health. We are the gatekeepers, we are the ones that can also regulate ourselves back into harmony and coherence. And when we have tools and when we have skills to do this, it means that the stressful thoughts can come in, but we can learn how to unpack them. We can learn to distance ourselves from them. We can learn to regulate our heart, our breath, our reactions, and we can start to calm ourselves down.
Kimberly: 10:49 We can recenter ourselves. So let’s get into some practical tips here. And Gina, as you said, how do you get out of this pattern? So the first thing that we wanna do is we wanna create a new energetic pattern each and every day. And the most powerful way to do that is to start the day with meditation. So Yoon was very emphatic about this. It was my, my yoga guru and the teachings in my new book are based in his incredibly profound and useful teachings. And what he says is you wanna meditate. First thing before the day has a hold on you, that’s creating a new energetic pattern. When we meditate, we center, we come inside, we find this place of solace, this sanctuary. So then as we continue to go on our phones and we, the day unfolds, we go in our emails and things may not go our way.
Kimberly: 11:41 And sometimes we see something that’s very scary on the news or whatever it is. We don’t have to be as thrown off because we’ve already started the energetic pattern of being more aligned. So I highly recommend shifting your schedule around just sitting up right in your bed or going to the floor next to your bed and having a meditation cushion set up there. Whatever’s so easy just to go right into meditation. And I do this despite having two young children and a husband and a lot of things going on, I find a way, and I know if I can do it, you can do it. And the reason I find a way is because I know the value. So I think that’s, what’s missing for a lot of us. We know the value of the glow green smoothie we can read about the nutrients. And so it sort of, it really does make it feel very concrete for us to understand.
Kimberly: 12:32 But when you start to taste the piece that comes from meditation done on a regular basis, you realize, oh, this is the real antidote to anxiety. So please check out our practical enlightenment meditations, which are free. I have a whole library for you over on our Solluna app. And we have also our Solluna Circle, which is a membership program of beautiful like-minded souls. We connect every day. We have a chat, a private chat over there, and we do a zoom and our next zoom is going to be next Tuesday, or it’s gonna, you know, it’s usually the first or second Tuesday of every month. Everybody has a chance to ask questions and participate. We meditate together. And we talk about the theme, which this month is being in flow and getting rid of past thoughts and really finding more trust in life. So I invite you to join us as well.
Kimberly: 13:22 And that’s the first really powerful thing we wanna do here is we wanna start to train the mind to center. And that’s what we do in our practical enlightenment meditations. We do breath work, we move the body. So it stills. And we do mantras in the, I am form. So we connect back to our wholeness and who we are on the inside. And this is so, so important. So, um, another modality that I wanna mention is massage. When we are holding a lot of tension in the body, we wanna actually physically help it release. I also do acupuncture sometimes, and I love it. So if you can find a good therapist, there’s many different modalities actually, but anything with, with healing touch, which for me includes that acupuncture with the needles to release energy blocks, or if you find a deep tissue or a Swedish massage therapist or ABI that you love, that can be very powerful just to help move some of the energy through.
Kimberly: 14:19 It’s very important that we also, um, keep our GI tracks clear because the colon is set to be the organ that holds on to emotional feelings and things like fear. So you wanna make sure you’re, you’re having your bowel movements and you are releasing energy regularly through your colon and your gut. And next I will say it is. And, and we have many articles and Detoxy supplements all kinds of things to support you on that. So please check out my Sal luna.com for more information, but if you are constipated and you are blocked, it is very hard to feel light in your mind. And then it’s always a great, um, idea to be out in nature. Anxiety is soothed by the healing power of nature. So now we’re in summer, if you’re in the Northern hemisphere, it’s a great time to shift your exercise routine, to go for walks or to just stretch outside, to do yoga outside, to go to the beach, to play with your kids outside. Anything that you can do outside is gonna just feel so refreshing. I’m just coming back from a couple weeks in Hawaii. And I can’t tell you,
Kimberly: 15:38 I can’t tell you how refreshed I feel, how alive, and it feels like real medicine. I would do my, our hikes barefoot, which started to just feel like the most natural thing. And they were slippery anyway, because it rains at night here and we’d do them in the early morning, but it was like this charge would come into my body. And I just felt very calm. I feel very calm still from the journey. So I encourage you to be outside in nature as a real way to, um, to heal and to release anxiety. I also think it’s important to have a, a, a delineation between the end of your day, your Workday and the evening. So it could be really great to take a shower. That’s my delineation. Once I take the shower, it’s like, okay, now it’s relaxation time. I’m gonna chill. And so having some kind of boundary, so your emails and your work and going on the news after that, I do not go on the news.
Kimberly: 16:36 I do not go on email. We need a break from the nervous system. So I encourage you to take that break and to make it a real strong boundary so that you can really allow yourself to have time and space for hours and hours to let yourself recalibrate. So these are some of my tips and tools. Remember there is such a powerful, um, intrinsic connection between the mind body spirit. I encourage you to check out the show notes for the research to check out all the resources, to support you in moving forward with these tools and to really take this seriously as such an important self-care practice in your life. So I will be back here Monday for our next interview podcast, sending you so much love and so much gratitude and so many blessings, so honored and grateful. We are connected. Lots of love. Namae Shanti.
