Today’s solocast topic is: How to Let Go of Attachment to Numbers to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health
I am very passionate about sharing this topic because I think numbers can be so stressful and they can affect all of us. Whether we’re talking about the number on the scale, how much money you make, how many calories you eat, how old you are, whatever it is.
This is a very personal topic for me. I have shared openly and in my books about how numbers have stressed me out over the years, and for me it was my weight. It was the number of calories. These were some of my main concerns, and I’ve gotten a lot better. However, we’re human and we tend to go in and out of teachings and learnings and sometimes we stumble along the way. It’s very human.
And so I have noticed lately in myself, there have been some numbers that have been getting me lately, which has directly inspired this show. I think speaking at some entrepreneur summits and conferences and things, and sometimes I notice my mind starts comparing. And then I sit back, and I think, oh my gosh, here I am again in the numbers. I know this isn’t healthy, but it’s creeping up and so today’s show is for you and me. These are some of the practices that we can call on and things that I know work.

Namaste loves and welcome back to our Monday solocast. Our topic today is How to Let Go of Attachment to Numbers to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health. I am very passionate about sharing about this topic today because I just think numbers can be so stressful, they affect all of us, or they can affect all of us. But we’re human and we tend, you know, we go in and out of teachings and learnings and sometimes we, um, stumble along the way.
It’s very human. And so I have noticed lately in myself, there have been some numbers that have been getting me lately, which has directly inspired this show. I think going to some, um, and speaking at some entrepreneur summits and conferences and things, and sometimes I noticed my mind, even though I’m so grateful for this incredible lifestyle that I’ve been able to create for myself, you start comparing, you know what this is going on or this number with this brand, or whatever it is. And then you get sit back. I sit back, I think, oh my gosh, here I am again in the numbers. I know this isn’t healthy, but it’s creeping up. So today’s show is for you and me, <laugh>. These are some of the practices that we can call on. These are things that I know work. I put this into place and it works.
So I went through a little bit of a number attack, shall we call it a few days ago. And these are some of the practices that really helped bring me back in a much faster and stronger way. So in the past, numbers used to get me more. We continued to evolve. So the truth is they still get me sometimes, but with these tools and practices, they don’t have the same detrimental effect on my life. Sometimes they would stress me out for days on end. I would stick with the same thought in my head and I’d wake up thinking about it. I’d have Sonia about it, <laugh>. So, you know, maybe you can relate in some way. There are so many numbers. It could be, you know, blood pressure number stressing you out, or again, number of savings or number of expenses or, um, just thinking, Oh, here’s where I am in my life.
This is how old I am. This is where I should be in my career. Or this is how many kids I should be having. Or, you know, back to basics, scale, weight, <laugh>. If you just reflect for a moment as we dive, if we start to dive in here, I’d like you to think about some of the numbers that maybe have the ability to change your mood or change your peace levels in the day. So we’re not saying to ignore these numbers. Some numbers are very important to be aware of, of course. But what we don’t wanna do is we don’t want numbers to dominate, to stress us out completely. So now we are actually creating inflammation and dysregulation in our bodies. We wanna take that information, apply it where needed, but then move on, right? And understand that we are whole beings and numbers are just one tiny part of the picture. They can give us broad strokes, they can give us direction, but our worth, our value, our lives are a lot more than numbers. So I’m very excited to dive in.

Solocast: How to Let Go of Attachment to Numbers to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health
All right, let’s get into our show today. Letting go of attachment to numbers and to improve our mental and physical health. So let’s start by reiterating that it is not circumstances themselves that creates stress, but it is our way of perceiving them. So information is always coming at us. It could be from the news, it could be from our emails, it could be from text messages or our neighbors or whatever it is. And it is our ability to take that information and stay grounded and to apply our own truth, our intuition to that situation, and then let it go. So that works really well in theory, but for some reason, for some of us, including myself, numbers can have, there’s a very finiteness to numbers.
So we could say something feels pretty good or it looks pretty vibrant, or whatever it is, and it doesn’t feel the same. We don’t feel the same harshness with numbers. This number is four, this number is 38 period, or 28 or 52. And there’s this finiteness to it that doesn’t really allow for flexibility or interpretation. So for these reasons, this rigidity with numbers has always made them feel, um, a bit stressful for me. It’s my interpretation of them. So what I have done and what I we will talk about today in your life is shifting our perception of them seeing them more as guideposts and helpful friends versus stressful, stressful entities. And so when we see these numbers as you know, they come across and they stress us out, there is a very real effect on our mental and physical health. This causes havoc, chaos in the body.
Our nervous systems can start to actually signal to us that there’s an issue here, there’s a problem. Consequently, stress hormones may be secreted like cortisol. Our GI tracts start to shut down as blood flow and circulation. Get, you know, redirected from our gi tracts, adrenals start to go bananas. So imagine if this is happening all the time regularly. So this can happen with a variety of things, but we’re talking about numbers. So it means every time your weight comes up, you feel that surge of stress. Or every time you’re in a conversation with friends and people are talking about planning a vacation or something to do with money, you start to feel really stressed. Oh crap, I don’t have enough, or, this is what I make. And again, as you reflected a few minutes ago, apply your specific numbers here. So what we wanna do is we wanna figure out how can I create a system for myself? What are the tools in which I can avoid numbers? None of us can avoid numbers, but
We can put numbers in their place. Helpful guide, guide, post markers, but not something that has the ability to dysregulate us. So I’m gonna go through a set of six key tools and practices that have really helped me that I wanna share with you. Before we get into those six practices, I’m going to read from you. Um, this is from page 80 of the new book and the chapter, You are whole. I’m gonna read a couple passages on this topic because there’s a little section in the book called You Are Beyond Numbers. So this chapter is really about tuning into our wholeness, which is where our power is when we come from a place of lack or reducing reductionism, reducing ourselves down to just what we look like or how much we weigh or, um, achievements. We do not feel whole. So we cannot feel in our power.
Practical tools to put numbers in there place
We always feel like we’re not enough. We gotta grasp, we gotta keep hustling for more. In contrast, when we feel this wholeness, we can notice when things can, could be improved. Sure, maybe we could lose 10 pounds. You know, we need to get that, um, number up a bit maybe of our income because we’re, um, there’s a, there’s a little bit of a struggle to meet the bills every month or whatever it is. So we’re aware, but we also know that we’re on this unique journey. And it’s the context, it’s the big picture. It’s not just the minutiae that matters. So we can take action steps towards this, but these numbers maybe not being perfect or ideal in no way, In no way affect our worthiness, our wholeness, which is always intact. Okay, so let me read this passage and then we’ll get into the tips.
So this is on page 80. You are beyond numbers. Part of embodying wholeness as your true nature is not letting numbers completely define you. Sure numbers can give us some broad, broad strokes in how we were doing. So I’m not suggesting we throw out all numbers and pretend they don’t exist in the world. That would be delusional. Obey speed limits and pay attention to your blood pressure number. I am suggesting that we stop giving numbers all our power, whether it’s the number of pounds or kilos you weigh or obsessing over your current salary or how many followers you have and so on. If these numbers can profoundly affect your mood or your self worth, then it’s time to put numbers back into their proper perspective.
And then it goes on and on. And I do wanna mention this cuz we’ll talk about it. Yogananda, the great yoga grew who brought yoga to the west, cautions against becoming too preoccupied with numbers, for instance. He counsels us to keep our age private. That for, uh, instead we can affirm I am a mortal. If you get too caught up in the year in which you were born, or in other words your chronological age, you find that obsessing over it can create anxiety which only wears you down. You may even start to mold yourself into what you should look like at a certain age. For example, someone in their fifties could start looking old because they have a picture in their mind of what a 50 year old should look like. Gray, hunched over with a pot belly. Get over those ideas.
The mind is powerful. And if we believe in the absolute power of numbers, they will have that absolute power over us. Here’s the truth. What’s limitless and true cannot be measured by numbers. Think of love. Can you measure that on a scale? Nope. Can you, can you weigh wisdom or how about truth or true beauty? We’re not talking about beauty pageant scores here. No. By tuning into your limitlessness, your reality expands. It is not confined to arbitrary numbers. Stay living in the limitless. We can’t get enlightened if we are thinking small. And in the end, numbers are pretty small beans. All right, there you have it. So it’s interesting to note that yonda in this specific context was talking about how important it was to not just always think about how old you are, which is one specific context of numbers. Cuz you do start to create a mi your mind’s idea around, well this is what it should be like versus being here in the moment with what is well, sure, whatever your chronological age, ages, but here you are with your energy, with your liveness.
#1 Tip For Letting Go of Attachment to Numbers: Coming back to this moment
This is what we tune into. So my number one tip is coming back to this moment, Numbers start to get your mind going. So you may be playing a game with your kids or driving the car and suddenly you start spinning into thinking and overthinking. Oh man, what’s gonna happen here? Fear starts to grow. Well, geez, I guess this or this might happen. Or oh my gosh, you know, you start to think about the mind and all that you overvalue or, or ways in which we can really overvalue these numbers. So the antidote is to come back to this moment, come back to your body. This helps us reset. So the first thing is you start to feel that stress come in, come back into the energy inside of your body so you can wiggle your toes, your hands a little bit, your your feet. You start to notice, oh, here’s where I am. Or you start to feel the bottoms of your feet, or you start to notice if your heart rate is really elevated, you start to notice if your, if your breath is fast, and then you take some deep breaths, you just move your attention away from whatever number, whatever
Thought was bothering you or triggering you, and you move attention into the body and you think, what do I need right now? How can I soothe myself right now? How do I regulate my system? So it comes back towards normalcy and you just put your full attention there. Then after you’ve done that, you’re calmer, you’re more grounded. This is how we break that pattern of that initial trigger, right? This is how we really correct part of correcting deep food, cravings and trauma is we have to reset from the present moment knowing that we are safe, we are here. So the first thing is just really feeling your physical body where you are in time and space in this dimension, getting outta your head and coming into your body.
#2 Tip For Letting Go of Attachment to Numbers: Remember what really matters in life
Number two, remember what matters, what really matters in life. So after you regulated your body, it’s time to bring yourself back into remembrance. And this is where it can be really helpful to have your purpose written out on your alter or you know, to revisit, to have a gratitude practice you write out in your journal. So your journal can be really helpful here, or you can have your purpose in your journal in a page that’s marked off. So you can just flip back to it at the front. We remember life is about moments. This is here, life is here, right here, this is what we got. So if we’re in the future about numbers, oh my gosh, what’s gonna happen next? Or if I don’t hit this, this may happen in the future. It’s all about fear. It robs us from the experience of the now what matters is peace. Now is love, now is fulfillment, connection. So to stop giving our power weight to these numbers, you know?
Sure. And I say this to myself because I was looking at number this company and this entrepreneur that I was sort of, you know, looking at a different aspect of his business to just see what we could do with, um, you know, reframing a, a process in Solluna. And I’m like, Oh my gosh, this guy’s business is so big. And he started around the same time. <laugh>, right? This is just me being very honest and vulnerable and I just think, oh wow, big numbers. But then I come back to the here and now what matters. What matters is I love running Solluna and I love doing it in the way that we have done it. We haven’t raised money, we’ve done it all internally. I don’t have to answer to people. So there’s a different pace and way in which we grow because of, you know, the choices that we’ve made.
But the what matters is my day to day life. I have so much flexibility, I have so much freedom to be a full time mom and also work in these odd hours. What matters is this quality of life which matters is love, which matters is just being able to go outside and breathe and have these really deep connections. So I was triggered a few days ago because I was looking at all this business data and then I went out on my walk and I remem I just was looking up at the sunshine, feeling a little bit annoyed and you know, just like kind of huffing about beating myself up. It goes back to decades ago, you know, remember beating myself up because I was so-called fat. I ate too much My days of eating disorders, it’s this familiar pattern comes from childhood or in the past somehow where we really just took on this idea that we weren’t enough as we were.
And so numbers are a way that it kind of fits my story. And so they have sometimes once in a while it really does trigger me. So anyways, I was in that triggered state and I was just walking around looking up at the sunshine and the, I remember this part of my walk where there’s these really beautiful jade plants and flowers. And then I thought to my myself, look at my life. I get to walk here in these beautiful mountains and I live in this place that I love and my baby’s napping and my son is in first grade right now and I have this beautiful moment to walk outside and to, you know, have this flexibility where I can walk outside. And I thought that is what matters. People can have these big, huge companies or they can have all this money and they’re miserable, right?
And you can apply that to whatever number you’re thinking about. Someone could be really skinny, somebody could have way less calories. Somebody could have, um, you know, a million, a billion, 20 million TikTok followers more than you. But is that what really matters? Is that really gonna give you the peace and the love that you’re looking for? What’s important sometimes to just reframe things?
#3 Tip For Letting Go of Attachment to Numbers: Gratitude when we start to think this number is the most important thing
Which brings us to tip number three, gratitude when we start to think is this number the most important thing, you know? Uh, a way I was obsessed with, with numbers was also being in the top 10 of my class. And I got there, I was number seven, and then I got to go to a big university and do all this stuff. But when I look back, did it really make me happier? I mean, it’s great, you know, some of these achievements are really great, but the obsession, like the, what I put myself through, you know, it’s, there’s this line between trying our best and then letting go of the results and living in that place of fulfillment and not being attached.
And this is where gratitude helps because I think about what is, what is here instead of looking for what’s missing <laugh>. And that this lack energy comes through numbers because it’s a platform that we can go off into our stories and we can use it to beat ourselves up even more past patterning. But when we’re grateful, we turn that mentality completely. And instead of looking at what is not, we say, what is, Oh my gosh, look at these cozy socks I have on right now. I’m just feeling in my own body and it feels so good that I’m on the rug. Oh my gosh, I’m so grateful for this community. I’m so grateful for this technology that we can connect over this podcast. I mean, it’s just amazing when we switch to what is, instead of thinking about what we’re not getting, what is here, how he can be really nourished and connected from the inside, that we have some space and time to meditate, that we had the resources to continue to connect and love each other.
So whatever, however you like to practice gratitude. I used to journal with my, with a written word about gratitude for me now, I, it’s more of a, a lifestyle, like a moment to moment thing where I, I feel the gratitude in, in moments. I really pay attention to it. So I don’t write it down as much, but I’ll pause. I try to, you know, we all pause as a family before we eat and we do share with each other what we’re grateful for. I share with loved ones why, you know, what I’m grateful for with them as well. I like to share it, but I try to bring gratitude in moment as much as I can into the moments. It’s not in every moment, but it’s in every day. And so whether that’s a written practice for you or you wanna make it, you know, um, ritualistic, like when you go to bed, you think of 10 things or whatever it is just really making gratitude a part of your life.
And definitely after you get triggered about numbers, bringing that energy in right away is very powerful.
#4 Tip For Letting Go of Attachment to Numbers: Reliant community and others that you can share these meaningful conversations with and connections with
Number four, reliant community and others that you can share these meaningful conversations with and connections with, which are based on qualitative things. They’re not based on numbers. So be in community share. We’re meant to be connected, not isolated. So if you’re in that mentality can be really great to be around people that can really see you for who you are, you’re worth. And you sometimes when we can’t see it in ourselves, our loved ones will help to correct that blurred vision. And it’s really wonderful to be in community and to, even if other people mention it, to really, um, inside of yourself, make that intention. Not to mention the numbers. So we’re in, you know, we don’t have to say 50 times, Oh man, um, you know, lost, lost a bunch of followers over the past few months, or, oh God, now that I, now that I turned 35, I’m noticing just be, get the numbers out of the conversation and just be aware of how much you feel tempted to insert them, how much you define or identify yourself with the numbers and just try to leave them out. Just try to be with people, see them, let them see you in this more holistic way to just get out of that pattern.
#5 Tip For Letting Go of Attachment to Numbers: Be aware of the numbers, and then move them out of view so you don’t become obsessed
Number five, be aware of the numbers, but then move them out of view so you don’t become obsessed. So what I mean by that is we used to get these weekly reports. I used to get these weekly reports. I do not anymore because it would scramble my mind these KPIs with so Luna, so the key performance indicators from all the different, um, parts of the company. So it could be from the warehouse and from customer service and the lab and all this different stuff. And it would just see all these numbers and I what, and then I’d come back and I’d revisit and be right in my email, top of my email. So I would like open it up again and again.
And over time it would sometimes would stress me out or be like, Huh, why is this number this or this and this. So for me, I, it’s healthier if I’m aware of the numbers, but I delete that email or we discuss it on a group company call and then we see what we can learn and we what we can improve. But then the number itself is let go of, this also applies to the scale. I used to weigh myself every day because I saw the scale there. Now the scale is out of view. I don’t even own a scale, my husband does and it’s all the way in the gym. So once in a while, if it’s there and he’s weighing himself, I mean very rarely I’ll weigh myself, but it’s very different energy than seeing it in my bathroom floor every day. <laugh> sort of reminding me that there’s a number of how much I weigh and I should, you know, I need to be aware of that.
So when numbers come in, it could be your blood pressure number, you got blood work done, or you see your bank account. Be aware, take action steps if you need to correct something or to shift something, of course, right? We’re not burying our head in the sand and pretending that we don’t know these numbers. But at the same time, constantly forcing yourself to be tied to those numbers isn’t helpful either. So maybe you look at that report and then you delete it or you move it away, um, or you just, you know, find a way to really, um, tuck it so it’s not front of mind dominating your thoughts and pushing you into obsession. So think about that for your number, whether it’s a report, a scale, um, you know, checking your bank account 50 times a day or checking your number of followers on Instagram every day or whatever it is <laugh>, see the numbers, be aware, Do your best to take action steps to improve or shift as needed, but then move away from obsession.
#6 Tip For Letting Go of Attachment to Numbers: Connect on the inside regularly through meditation and inward stillness practices
And then number six, finally our final point here is to connect on the inside regularly through meditation, through our inward stillness practices. And also another powerful one is sitting either on its own or with these other practices like meditation in nature. Meditation really is the only practice that I know of as humans where we start to really and truly contextualize the truth of who we are because we’re closing our eyes, we’re shutting down that peripheral nervous system and just our identification with this limited body. And we’re sensing what’s inside. So what’s inside this wholeness, this power inside of us, as I mentioned in the passage from from you, more than you think you are can most definitely cannot be measured by numbers.
So we connect to this pulse of life, this aliveness, this pr inside of us, this intelligence, we can feel energies, subtle energies moving through us. This is experiential and it is only in this experiential way that we truly understand that we cannot fully be defined by numbers. That we are so much more. And so if we don’t experience that, and this is why meditation has been such a huge, huge, huge part of my personal healing journey and why I love sharing it with you. If we don’t experience it, we’re just reading about it, we’re hearing about it, we’re not really living it. So it doesn’t integrate. Integration is the word. Integration means we take something in and it becomes, you know, part of our way of being looking at approaching something. So it’s like food. If we don’t experience feeling energy or eating a really healthy plant-based diet, we may look on the surface and think, well look at the numbers.
It’s hard to get protein or there isn’t as much of this or that. But we experience the truth of oh my gosh, my body recycles proteins and there’s a toy and I’m recycling these old fragments and my body feels really strong. I experience the truth that this is a really wonderful way of eating. We have to experience it. So when we sit in effective meditation, we can really experience the truth that these numbers do not have to control you. You are so much more than the numbers. The numbers do not have to control your moods, your sense of self-worth if you’re good enough or not, if you’re worthy of love or not, right? So we wanna sit in regular practice. So please do check out the free guided meditations that I have provided for you. They’re called practical enlightenment meditations. This is a form of meditation that I developed inspired by yoga Nada’s work, which is simple and accessible for something that you can do in as little as seven minutes, five, seven minutes.
It’s about sitting in your body, proper posture, little bit of bodily movement to settle the physical body. Then we do some breath work. We work with the PR of the energy in your body. And then we say a mantra in the I am form. So this is speaking down to the deepest true self in you. I am what we’re saying, I am whole, I am that I am, I am the love that I’ve always been looking for. Whatever we’re what looking to connect with in this context, I am whole. I am whole and complete just as I am. I’m worthy as I am. I know that I am so much more than a collection of numbers. I feel the truth of that. So we are speaking deep down and then we sit a bit more and then we close in gratitude. So check out these guided meditations.
It’s very powerful to do these, especially near when we wake up or before bed, when your mind is a little bit more settled and we’re not in the flux of the day. And all the emails and communications, this is how we create deep change. And we’ve sat and then we’ve allowed a space for deeper integration of these ideas. It’s almost like a little bit of hypnosis. We settled some of these, you know, active parts of the brain and then other parts can take in, in a subconscious mind and really start to, on a deeper level, integrate these truths so that over time, day to day, and this has been a personal, personal experience of truth in my life, I will say to you, by meditating in this way and all these tools that I just mentioned to you, I am, I would say 92% better numbers.
So like I mentioned a couple y days ago, I had this thing come in, it made me feel off for a couple hours and then I remembered all these things and I started to feel better again. And it’s certainly not gonna be the last time in my life this happens. But we can retrain, you can get over your numbers, obsession or focus. And this will lead to more peace, a more relaxed, vibrant, healthy body that doesn’t have the inflammation and the, you know, these big stress attacks going through it. Regulation of hormones, many different things. So it’s very much worth it. I will review the tips once again. Number one, come back to this moment. When you notice you’ve gotten triggered, just regulate your body. Comment to the physical space. Be mindful right here, right now where you are. Don’t try to process it yet, but just be here. Number two, then remember what matters. The moment to moment experience of life is what really matters. Number three, be grateful. Look around, write it down or have some sort of practice or pair this triggered feeling with regulation. And then shifting focus to gratitude. Number four, be in community. Connect to your community where you connect with others beyond numbers. And it’s about really seeing each other and supporting each other. Oh, I will mention here we have our Solluna Circle community. If you’re interested in joining a really positive group of like-minded souls online.
And then we want to be aware of numbers, but then let them go. Not keeping them around in our email or constantly checking numbers. We are aware we’re gonna use that information to be useful to us, but not to be obsessed. And number six, we’re gonna connect to the inside through meditation. Oh, and I also wanted to mention being in nature, just looking around, the numbers aren’t there. The everything just is, whether it’s in nature walk or a hike or just walking along the beach is also a really great way to embody this beingness, this quality of lifeness beyond numbers that can really start to take hold in your life more and more. So we’re moving towards the state where we’re more free of numbers. Numbers are gonna be in our lives. We’re surrounded by them. We’re not gonna ban them, but we’re gonna put them in their rightful place little by little.
