And I’ll share a little bit about why I felt so driven to work in wellness and to keep going because some people say to me, my gosh, you have so many bucks.
You just keep going at it. And the reason is there’s something inside of me that feels so inspired to reach these new levels of energy and vitality and feeling good. Right? That’s why the name of this podcast is the Feel Good Podcast. Not inauthentically fake or, you know, just something that is contrived or not real.
like being cheerful all the time, but to me, feeling good is about feeling our authentic nature, the wholeness that we are, feeling our abundance, feeling connected, feeling grounded, feeling energized and in our true vitality. And so my quest started as I’ve shared with many of you on this around the world trip, and I was backpacking for three years and I had a lot of anxiety and I

bloatedness and I had been recovering from eating disorders in high school. And it just feels like I’ve been on this journey for over 15 years now, traveling around the world, my body being in different locations and then being in New York and then eventually moving to LA with some very big celebrity clients that I had. But it’s been this seeking and trying to figure things out. And there’s been very many pieces of this wellness puzzle and I’ve shared
so many of them with you in prior books and also on this show. How do we eat? How do we create daily routine and ritual? How do we utilize ancient practices around Ayurveda? How do we meditate to connect inside? How do we utilize the four cornerstones, food, body, emotional wellbeing, spiritual growth? So a couple of years ago, I started to come into some of this really incredible heart research.
And I will say it actually started when I was writing the book, You Are More Than You Think You Are. And I was researching some different components of the book. I believe it was for the magnetism section or some other chapters. I can’t remember exactly where it was. But I came across some of this research that started to really blow me away around how the heart has a magnetic field, how the heart is another brain.
how the heart can interact with the brain in our guts and the brain in our mind, elevate the vagus nerve function, help with stress, help with hormones, reduce cortisol, all this stuff. And what I said to myself is, how come everybody isn’t talking about this? How come we don’t know about this? How come we’re never taught about how to activate our hearts? And yet there’s so much conversation around some of these topics that keep getting talked about for years and years. How much protein are we supposed to get?
How do we boost our collagen? How do we make the best decisions in relationships? Whatever it is. And yet, the more I dug into it, the more I started to realize that the heart, physically, energetically, spiritually, is right here. It’s right in the center of our chest. It’s right in the middle of our spine, between our guts and our brain. And it has this incredible intelligence and power.

but we need to learn how to turn it on. And again, this was all blowing me away because I had been reading so many thousands of books and research papers, and yet this wasn’t part of the conversation that was happening. Now, I’ll say that many of us talk about the heart casually or in a sentimental way, right? Follow your heart, put your heart into it, whatever it is.
So on some level, I think that many of us realize there’s this incredible power of the heart, but yet the heart gets relegated to, you know, just the, again, the sentimental heart, or it’s not really practical. I followed my heart and I got, you know, followed the wrong path or whatever it is. And then I came to realize through these, research and the teachings, when you really dig in, that what we have come to equate with the heart is usually the ego, these big erratic emotions.
like anger and jealousy and, you know, resentment and just feeling envy. Like all these big feelings actually are not of the heart. They’re of the ego. They’re of the linear mind. The heart’s power, which is deep, deep, deep inside and comes from a place of calmness. When we start to create more heart coherence, which means more syncing up with the communication between our hearts, our brains and our nervous systems, we start to
be able to access this incredible power that is inside of us. And again, this happens through tools, techniques, very specific evidence -based ways, which I share in the new book, The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts. And I’ll share some of it with you today. It’s not something that I had ever known about. So it was blowing me away. So then I started to go back to some of my yogic scripture and teachings.
And actually all world religions and all spiritual ancient cultures from the Egyptians to the Babylonians to the Greeks actually talk about the heart a lot. So I was starting to say, you know, what is going on here? And over the last hundred years, 150 years, there’s been this huge emphasis on the brain. But if we look back, we dig further down, we see that it was really the heart that was considered this incredible of primary importance, giving us this intelligence.

The Egyptians didn’t take the heart out of the mummy. When they were preparing the body for mummification, they actually kept it in. They believed it was needed in the afterlife. And then we see this intersection of different world religions and spiritual traditions, the sacred heart of Jesus Christ, the heart sutra in Buddhism, the word lev for heart in the Torah and
across the Quran. I believe it’s mentioned 132 times. The Anahata Chakra spoken about so much in yoga, Hinduism. And so I started to really take a deep dive and again books take a while to publish. So this was a few years ago and I remember sitting in my forest in Hawaii in my hammock and early in the morning before my children would wake up and I just kept saying to myself this
is what the world needs right now. This is a power inside of you that we don’t have to go outside of ourselves. We don’t have to buy anything. It’s right here. And it also ties together so much of this work that we’ve been talking about. Because when we turn on the heart’s power, we start to have more intuitive understanding of how to best care for ourselves. We start to elevate these processes in our body, our ability to bypass stress,
have less inflammation in the body to keep our immunity higher. There’s a research study in the new book where I talk about using some of these heart coherence tools versus going into five minutes of anger, kept IGA, a biomarker for inflammation, in a better place for over six hours. In contrast, where we went into these more egoic, erratic emotions, like anger, immunity dropped for over six hours, just from five minutes of feeling irritation or anger.
So there’s something really to this and a lot of it can be measured. Now, you may think to yourself, is she talking about the physical heart or the energetic heart? And I’m actually talking about both because the heart is believed to be more than a physical organ, like I mentioned, in spiritual traditions around the world. But physically speaking, if we just think about the actual heart, let’s remember that the heartbeat comes far before the brain is formed. Isn’t that amazing?

Those of us that have children, you’ll notice on the sonogram or ultrasound, when you go into the doctor, if you went into the doctor, some choose to go to a midwife and don’t have an ultrasound at all. But if you did go in or you’re aware of this, you’ve seen it online or whatever, there’s a heartbeat that comes. There’s an intelligence that is there present without the brain.
So it turns out that the brain, the heart actually has 40 ,000 neurons, which are brain -like cells, and the heart sends more messages to the brain than the other way. I mean, again, I’m sitting here uncovering this research, reading all these papers, and this incredible science, and I’m saying to myself over and over again, why isn’t everyone talking about this? Why is this hidden away?
And I sort of had this feeling years ago when I remember being in my apartment in New York City in the West Village and blending for the first time spinach and a very ripe banana, which was the very beginning of our Glow and Green smoothie. And I drank some and it didn’t taste super nasty. And I gave some to my boyfriend at the time who was sitting on our blue couch. And he said, that’s pretty good. And I remember I had this flash of everybody should know about this. And that’s when I know.
this is something I have to share with you. And so that’s really how I feel about this because it’s so practical and there’s so much I can say about it on today’s show. I want to give you a little bit of an overview about this. So you could start to tap into how powerful you really are. And we hear these things and we hear about, you know, positive thinking and getting past self doubt, but it’s really hard to do that from a mental place.
which again can feel forced, can feel fake, it can feel inauthentic. But when we come into the heart’s power and we learn to turn on the neurons in the heart, what happens is we start to create different neural connections. We start to be able to break old patterns. There’s a part of our brain called the amygdala and this is where emotional memories are stored. So what that means is old trauma, old ideas, this happens.

and I immediately get angry or I go into a fear response or a stress response. When we start to turn on the heart’s power, it means that we’re able to stay more resilient. Again, heart coherence means the sinking up of our hearts, our brains, and our nervous systems. This is so important because our brains are creating the perceptions that we see around the world. So we can perceive the rain as,
It’s raining, let me flow and shift, harmonize with the day, do something else. Or the perception can be, this sucks, my day is ruined. Why did this have to happen? You’ll victim mentality. Our nervous system is a really big piece of the puzzle. The yogis have been talking about this for millennia. The nervous system are all these nerves and ways in which we sense the world. So we can sense the world as a scary place, an overwhelming place.
place where we could be harmed, a place that is unsafe for us, where we have to hide ourselves or we have to play out certain old patterns or play small, or we can start to regulate, harness the nervous system under the heart’s power. That’s what coherence is. And I describe this in the book as almost like a lasso around your brain, your thoughts and say, hey, get in line here.
And same thing with the nervous system. So instead of consistently, in small ways and big ways, consistently going into sympathetic nervous overdrive, which basically means your cortisol goes up, you age faster, inflammation can come, you waste a ton of energy. We’re able to sit in more resilience from the heart’s power. And we’re able to flow, make decisions, stay calm, stay more grounded in ourselves.
because we’re not spiking things off and going into, you know, these crazy chaos directions and just feeling really off kilter. So you may or may not have heard me speak about this a little bit. This was also the foundation for being really inspired to write the Chilla Gorilla, like you leave our journey to the heart children’s book about teaching children more about their heart’s power because children naturally can connect to the heart. They don’t have the same depth.

of years of experience weighing them down in these patterns. But yet in today’s world, in the modern world, there’s so many screens and video games and ways in which children can move further away from themselves versus this heart’s powers right there, right in the middle of their heart, their bodies and in their being. So what we did was to test this, we used some of the research.
We put it into a meditation called the Heart Aligned Meditation. And we took some ancient practices from Paramahansa Yogananda and we created the Heart Aligned Meditation. We took 30 participants in LA and we studied them. So we brought them into a center and we measured their HRV. We measured their body’s responses before we started the study. And then at the end, we had to bring them all back in.
And what I did over these four weeks was I led them on Zoom in a live meditation, this eight minute meditation. And then on their own, they were given a meditation tract and they were to practice four or five times a week. That was the deal. And when we brought them back to measure their HRV, we found a 29 % increase on average of coherence. Again, this sinking up, heart, brain, nervous system, feeling more in flow.
more resilient. Imagine almost 30 % more just in four weeks. And so what this means is our ability to stay centered, focused on target. What do I want to create today versus getting sidetracked by the overthinking, the self doubt, the triggers? Why did that person say that to me in the coffee shop? Why hasn’t my friend texted me back? The obsessiveness which actually leads
nervous system dysregulation, therefore hormonal dysregulation, lowered immunity, lowered digestion, a million things happen. This is where the psychological really does become the physiological, meaning our thoughts and our emotional energies running through our bodies start to change our thoughts and start to change the ways in which our bodies function. Everything is so interrelated.

So what we start to do, and we can start to do a little bit of these preliminary practices right now, is you start to shift some of your attention to your heart. Now you may be listening to the solo cast while you’re driving your car, walking your dog, doing the dishes, cleaning your house. That’s fine. You can do all of these things. And that is the beauty of this hard work. You don’t have to just stop and do this on the side. Yes, the meditation, it’s preferable to spend those six, eight minutes on,
Focusing but right here in the middle of your day as I’m sitting here talking to you I’m shifting some of my attention to my heart and This alone This alone starts to create more coherence You’re starting to go into a different place from where the over? Thinking is in the mind the the brain in your head
The American Journal of Cardiology has published research around shifting to your heart actually starts to rewire your nervous system. You start to create different neural patterns. So this concept of neuroplasticity, the rewiring of these settings that go off in your brain also happen between your heart and your brain. So you’re starting to activate your heart’s power. Now, just for a moment.

And you can close your eyes for a moment. Or again, if you’re in the middle of something, don’t do it, but just notice.
putting even further attention on your heart starts to create a very deep sense of grounding. Now, this isn’t just, it feels nice or something that, you know, you know, it just has no basis to it. This deepening of attention to your heart is creating different neural patterns. It is literally changing the ways in which your organs are functioning in this moment.
and it will continue to change your thoughts. Now there’s a section in the book. So the five hearts are five heart stages that we all go through to awaken the heart. And as I started to dive into the science, I started to go back to these incredible teachings in yoga and the Vedas. And I came across teachings from Swami Sri Yukteswar, who is Yogananda’s guru, Yogananda is the yogic monk who brought yoga to the West.
And he talks about these five stages of the heart, which are the dark heart, the propelled heart, steady heart, the devoted heart, and the clear heart. And what I found was that these five stages actually correspond to the science of heart coherence. And so at each stage, there are practices and ways in which we can keep awakening the heart and transcending barriers of diving deeper into this power and this intelligence.
And so it was amazing to me how the science was really lining up to the teachings. And I could also start to see in my life where I could be in some really dark heart moments and keep thinking the same things and then experience overwhelm or sometimes feel a lot of frustration in my communication with my husband who has different viewpoints and different traumas. And so while there was all this love when we met, I would say the first two years of our marriage,

There was a lot of things to work out. There were definitely rocky times where we would feel very frustrated with each other and sometimes had to separate. And he would go in the guest house and I would sit in here and I would feel quite sad and say, you know, I’m so happy to find this incredible love. Why is there so much drama right now? Why can’t we just get along? And the reason is we were both coming at it from such a mental place versus from this deeper understanding of the heart.
turning on the heart’s power. And so I could also see where a lot of my life was in the propelled heart and seeking outside of myself, outside of myself, and how this can lead to a lot of stress and burnout. And so it really was these teachings that helped me get to this place where I’m much more deeply in the devoted heart. And yet there’s still the steady heart where I need to steady myself more.
But what this means today, and I’ll talk about the heart stages so you can see where you are a little bit, just a moment, is we’re talking about this internal process, but yet this changes your external success. And part of this is because there’s an electromagnetic field around your heart that is registered as energy by everyone else, whether you realize it or not. So there’s a reason that you can come across as more attractive and magnetic to others.
when there’s chaos or interference in your field, you actually can repel people. So even if you’re looking for love or a new relationship or healthy love, if you are not in a place where you are coherent within yourself, it’s very hard to attract that. So let me back up a little bit and talk a little bit about the heart stages, because it’s really quite fascinating. The first one is called the dark heart. And not dark as in bad or evil.
But dark as in our heart and our brains aren’t communicating. So this is where we can feel a lot of self doubt, a lot of fear, overwhelm, anger, just feel like things aren’t working out and we’re feeling frustrated with life, disconnected. Sometimes we engage in harmful behaviors. We just want to numb, we want to drink, we want to take drugs or hurt ourselves in other ways or get into unhealthy relationships.

from a physical standpoint, when we’re in the dark heart, we experience a lot of indigestion, bloating, we can feel very low immunity, very low energy. And then the next stage is the propelled heart. So a lot of societies between the dark heart and the propelled heart, would say. Propelled means we’re propelled into action. We’re trying to seek meaning in life, but that gets displaced into finding external validation.
So we may be propelled to look really good on social media, to lose more weight, to get into biohacking, self -help programs, make more money, have more fame or achievements. Now, none of this is bad in and of itself, but when we’re in the propelled heart, we’re actually equating our self -worth with these external things.
Now, from a physical standpoint, this leads to anxiety, burnout, insomnia, acid reflux, inflammation. There’s many different symptoms of how being propelled into action all the time, all the time, always on, never resting, never rest and digest, really starts to wear the body down. Then the third heart stage is called the steady heart.
And this is where we start to steady ourselves. start to find the anchor for ourselves within ourselves. And this is a big turning place because it means that we find this level of resilience and self -reliance inside of ourselves for the first time. And what does this look like? This is so exciting. This looks like finding more peace, feeling less
dependency in relationships. Again, this is all measured in our heart field as well. We start to find more groundedness, more steadiness in our relationships, more steadiness in our lifestyle, in our diets. We start to have more steady energy. We start to find better sleep patterns. We start to find more overall energy because we’re depleting ourselves less and less.

Internally, we’re starting to feel this interconnection, but externally, we’re starting to find more steadiness in our work, more steady success coming to us. The fourth heart stage is called the devoted heart. And this is where we don’t just become attuned to the inner world. We start to become more devoted to the heart emotions and the heart energy. I’m talking about unconditional love, peace, compassion,
It means that for us, it’s not just about getting from point A to point B. It’s not just getting that promotion that matters anymore. It’s not just how we look, how much we weigh, but there’s more important things in life. How fulfilled we are in our day -to -day interactions, in our relationships, in our work. This is where we may start to say, you know what? I’m in this, you know, safe job, but I just…
want to do something more fulfilling. So we take a leap, we make a shift, we make a change, or we deepen the relationship we’re in, or we want to find really deep connection with another human. And because we’re in such a coherent heart stage, we’re very magnetic. So the funny thing, the ironic thing as we ascend up the heart stages is that it becomes even easier to create your material goals. You start to find more abundance.
People want to work for you and with you and opportunities open up and people are more drawn to what you’re saying. People listen more deeply. People pull into you. They come in. They want to get closer to you. And this has been my experience. When I started to steady myself more, there was less of this frenetic running around, less efforting, more ease. Things open up and
It was being more in this coherent field that I was able to listen more to my husband’s needs. I could see myself more. I could see when I was coming from a wounded place or how I might come across when I didn’t even, couldn’t see myself before versus, Hey, that is a little bit snappy or unreasonable, or I’m projecting this on him or on other people versus let me show up for myself.

Let me learn to create more coherence in myself. Let me be more resilient in myself. Let me learn to regulate myself. And I would do these other heart aligned practices that I’m going to teach you in the book. One of them is called the heart aligned harmonized practice. You can do it under a minute in your day to start to shift from chaos into clarity and better communication, which that of course results in better relationships.
So I was seeing a huge change in my relationship with my husband and just so much more in my work relationships, my ability to create things. I could see a pathway forward to creating our new website for Saluna, which seemed like so hard and so daunting in the past. Now we’re in the midst of it. We’re going to be launching it in August, by the way. I could find the right team. I could just speak my needs out and feel like resources were coming in.
It just changed everything. And that’s what I know is possible for you as well, taking these real quantum leaps. So then the fifth heart stage is called the clear heart. And this is where we start to become transparent. Now, what does that mean? So when you see a prism, and I use this analogy in the book, at first it seems ordinary. I used to have a prism when I was a little girl and I had it on the window sill. It just seems clear like a piece of clear quartz.
But when you hold it up to the light, it makes this rainbow. So it’s transparent to this full energy of the universal heart, of the greater heart. This means we’re oneness, deepest connection. When we are connected to ourselves and each other in the deepest way, this is the field of great synchronicity, miracles, real quantum leaps happening in your life.
And so there are moments where you experience all of these heart stages probably. There’s moments where you look into your child’s eyes or your puppy’s eyes and you feel out of time and space. And so these are moments where this expansiveness comes in like the clear heart. But what these practices teach you of elevating your heart intelligence in the hidden power of the five hearts is how you really go into that, how you really upgrade it, how you’re not just doing it randomly or sometimes.

but how you really tune into your heart’s power, which by the way, elevates your intuition, your deeper knowing, your ability to find win -win solutions and unity in all your work, in all your relationships. So there’s really a way to train your heart. So this again, corresponds as intersection of ancient teachings and ways in which Swami Sri Yukteswar
and these amazing spiritual traditions, we’re teaching about ways in which to awaken the heart, and that they also correspond to these science -based, evidence -based techniques about how we go into these neurons in the heart, which has its own independent nervous system, and just open up these pathways, the communication between your heart and your brain. Now, one helps the other, and that’s the other thing I’ve learned, is that we’re not just doing one thing here.
Right? So it’s sort of like how, let’s say you do a cleanse and you drink the Glowing Green Smoothie for three days and all that fiber is cleaning out your GI tract. You may have some really big bowel movements. You may feel great. You have so much energy. Your skin looks amazing. It’s glowing. And yet at the same time, you also feel lighter and clearer mentally and emotionally and spiritually. Maybe you have some great ideas.

And so that’s what happened to me as I started doing this hard work. I would feel great in my meditations, but then sometimes I’d feel chaotic in my day -to -day life, or I felt like I had to say something even though I knew it would create a conflict with my husband or my colleague. Just had to get this point across. I just had to express how I didn’t like how they treated me or they said something. And I would create more dissonance, more chaos.

And then I would just be cleaning up the mess, saying sorry, just backtracking. This is what I really meant. So much wasted energy, so many big feelings in my body, which of course create these surges of hormones and cortisol and deplete your DHEA, which is so important for vitality, and deplete your overall energy and your wellbeing. So now the reason I would quantify that I have about 70 % more energy
on a daily basis is because I’m not depleting all this energy. Where I’m placing my time and my attention is so focused now. And of course I still go into trigger, but I come back much faster because of this hard work. I’m far more peaceful. My relationships work better. My body works better. Even my bowel movements are more complete, more regular. My hair feels fuller. Everything is energy.
So we’re either contributing energy to what we want to or we’re wasting it. This is huge. This is one level
saving energy. And then the hard work, again, ties everything together, just elevates everything. Even for two minutes of irritation, we’re actually upsetting the body’s delicate balance. We’re taking energy away from our

Place some of your attention on it. You could place your hand on it. This is the beginning. It sounds really basic and you think, well, how is this going to do anything?
