She is a reoccurring guest. She is an aromatherapist, a national educator on aromatherapy and essential oils. She’s also a formulator, and she knows more about botanicals and oils than anyone I have ever come into contact with. We bring her back on because there are so many amazing uses for this type of plant medicine in our life: It really affects our energy. It can have a big, positive affect in many ways on our lives. So, she comes on periodically, and everybody loves her.

Charlynn: Hi, Kimberly. Hi, I’m so excited to be back, and to be with all of you as you’re listening in to our podcast today, so-
Kimberly: A resident expert. I feel like, oh my gosh, there’s … anything I throw at you, Charlynn, you’re always like, “Boom,” and there’s always a plant, there’s always an oil for this or that, and it’s really amazing how much essential oils have started to grow in popularity.
Charlynn: Oh, it is. It’s incredible just to watch people get excited about nature. Essentially, they’re connecting with the aromas, and that’s bringing them back to the natural world, which is really what it’s all about for me.
Charlynn shares tips on refreshing a new space – whether that be a new apartment, a new job, office, cubicle or whatever it may be…
Kimberly: Charlynn, as I was sharing with you, you and I are in regular contact, I’ve had a lot of life change happen very recently. I married my soulmate, which is really exciting. It’s been a journey for me in love with ups and downs, but I’m feeling really grateful, and it just so happened that we found this amazing house. We haven’t fully moved in yet because we were putting hardwood floors in one of the rooms, but we’re about to move in. So, one of the things I wanted to ask you, and a lot of Beauties listening to this may be … sometimes we think about this in like spring cleaning time, but more this idea of renewal of space. So, whether someone’s moving into a new apartment, or they get a new job and they have a new office or a new cubicle, or whatever, just like newness, what are some of the tips you have to refresh a space because I do believe you want to do that before you move in, whether it’s on a practical level. I know you talk about essential oils that are like antibacterial, but also just energy-wise, and help it feel like the old isn’t coming in energetically too.
Charlynn: Definitely. Definitely. There are several, of course, that just jump to mind. Just thinking about you, Kimberly, in your own life right now, this is a high-energy, excitement time. You have a lot of change, and a new space and marriage and all of that deserves to be celebrated on every level. I think when we look at essential oils, right now what I’m smelling in my own home was one of the first oils that came to mind — cinnamon — which is very appropriate for fall, and it has that comforting aroma for, like, a new house to help us feel connected and grounded. That’s a great way to welcome ourselves into a brand-new space. It’s also really potent this time of year because of that antimicrobial effect, so it’s good to breathe it in, and it’s good to have around as we’re getting exposed to people who may be coming into celebrate your new home. Cinnamon welcomes them, but it also protects you from the stuff that’s flying around in your airspace, and the germs, and things that you don’t want to have lingering. Plus, it’s so seasonally appropriate. It’s just so warm and spicy, and-
Kimberly: Love cinnamon.
Kimberly: Well, Charlynn, in the past you talked about you can actually get a big pot and put essential oils in, and it emanates throughout the home. With cinnamon, could you just do this with cinnamon sticks, or is there something different about the essential oil cinnamon?
Charlynn: With cinnamon sticks, you definitely could because what you’re smelling is that volatile oil. So, you’re smelling the essential oil of cinnamon if you take like … like, one thing I’ve done in the past is I’ve taken cinnamon sticks and just boiled them in water on the stove, low simmer, and then you get that really potent cinnamon aroma, but it doesn’t stay around for terribly long because the heat helps get rid of it, helps it volatize in our airspace. That’s one way to do it. Another thing that you see around in stores, and I have one in my house now, is a cinnamon broom. They’re designed to have the aroma. Sometimes they’re made with cinnamon oil infused into the wood. Sometimes you add the oil to it. Then it’s more of a subtle interaction in your space. It looks kind of like fall, Halloween, this broom. It’s very rustic looking. That’s another-
Kimberly: Wow. I never seen that.
Charlynn: Oh yeah. They’re out. I’ve seen them everywhere from hardware stores to like a Trader Joe’s type of … they’re in lots of different locations right now, so that’s another great way to incorporate it without running a diffuser with cinnamon, which can be a little bit too much for most of us because it is pretty potent.
The best ways to clear space when you’re coming into a new place…
Kimberly: As you were just mentioning, Charlynn, there is this range I feel like in essential oils. Same thing with crystals, right? Some people are very like, “Okay, this is for this physical benefit in this,” and some people are … this spiritual benefit or this energetic benefit. I definitely love it all. Same thing with essential oils, the antimicrobial, this, this, and now we could talk about the energetic part of … you know, I love some of the shamanic ceremonies of, like, space clearing and, not necessarily bacteria, but someone’s been living in this home, you want to cleanse the energy for your new space, or even if you buy a used car, or whatever it is. Sometimes I sage vintage clothes I buy. So, what are some of the ways to … whether it’s a diffuser or like when you take about cotton balls, what are the best ways to clear space when you’re coming in? You want it to be new. You don’t want anybody else’s stuff in there.
Charlynn: Yes, you definitely want to have that high impact in your airspace, so any type of interaction with air exchange like fan blades. Like, box fans, I’ll take cotton balls and put … let’s use sage as an example because that’s great for clearing. If you buy a house that somebody else has been in, or that old, stagnant energy, both sage and frankincense are good choices for that. So, if you’ve got the windows open on a sunny day, you put a few drops of your sage oil or frankincense on a cotton ball and stick it in a box fan in the squares and put that in the window, then you’re going to get that whole aroma just quickly moving through your space, which is what we want. We want to have a change of energy to push out the old and bring in the new. I use that a lot. In spaces that there isn’t much air exchange, sometimes I’ll put … like, I’ve put frankincense around door jams, like infuse it, having it soak into the wood to get that aroma just sort of permeating the entrance of a new room or a new space [crosstalk 00:09:33]-
Kimberly: Do you drop it into that, like, rubber doorjamb thing?
Charlynn: Into the wood, the trim around the wood.
Charlynn: Yeah, so then you’ve got that frankincense in the wood and you smell it as your passing through the door, and it’s just … that’s a great perspective shift even from one room to the next as you’re changing space.
Kimberly: It doesn’t damage the wood or any … does it stain it?
Charlynn: Not really. Frankincense is pretty … I wouldn’t do that with every essential oil, I should say. Definitely not citrus oils because they can pose a lot of structural damage to some of our physical materials. Frankincense is pretty gentle, and because it comes from a resin that exists in a tree in the frankincense, the Boswellia tree, it sort of characteristically responds well to wood, so if you put it back in the wood, it’s really not going to do a whole lot. There isn’t much about it that can create any sort of damage. It’s just going to be absorbed, and you can smell that deep aroma.
Kimberly: Charlynn, in [inaudible 00:10:34] a couple months ago in August, I don’t know if I told you this, but I was in the Middle East. I was touring around, and I was in Jordan, and I was so lucky, I got to go to Petra, which is incredible, and there was frankincense everywhere. Like, little frankincense shops and frankincense resin. It was more like the resin that they were selling, but I was thinking about you because it was … you could smell it everywhere. I mean, it’s really beautiful. It’s been used there traditionally for centuries.
Charlynn: For centuries: For cosmetics. For embalming. We’ve used frankincense any lot of different practical applications too: in skin care, and taking care of the surface of our skin. Frankincense, the resin, has been used in different unduants and balms and salve recipes over the years, so powerful healing agent.
Properties in sage that allow it to be so clearing…
Kimberly: Going back to sage for a minute, Charlynn, if you do like some kind of shamanic ceremony, they always use sage or they often do use sage or copal, or Native Americans were using sage, what is the properties in sage that allows it to clear so much because you hear about it a lot, but what is it about this plant, this … it’s just really interesting. What is in it that is doing that?
Charlynn: Yeah, some of it has to do with the smoke itself. So, the notion of smoke as an agent to clear, the notion of the ether or space. It’s the physical representation of ether, and you can watch it moved from one area to the next. So, if you have this smoke component, and I think white sage because it delivers when you’re doing it the right way, or any sage, but white sage especially, a very visible type of smoke that I’m sure had a lot to do with it. Energetically, we know that it tends to be one that is … it companions well with that notion of clearing. It helps the mind with the reset. It helps shift our perspective and our focus, but then that idea of taking energy from one place and moving it to the next or influencing the direction of shift is what is associated with sage.
Kimberly: Also, sage being your crystals, which I do for my crystals.
Charlynn: Yes. With my crystals, I tend to use … I forget about smoke, I forget about Sage, but I use sunlight, moonlight and water. Water sources, and saltwater as well. Yeah, but that smoke is another … I believe whenever we can, incorporate as many of the elements as possible — the water, the light, the heat, the air, the ether — pulling that into rituals, into traditions, into everything from when we take on a new space. We’re moving in and we’re setting intention for that space, pulling in the elements that support us, they give us life make it such a more profound experience than just moving into a house.
Kimberly: That’s right. It’s intention. Charlynn, I have to share with you that my, now, husband for my wedding gift gave me a 500 pound rose quartz crystal.
Charlynn: Oh, my goodness. That’s a beautiful gift. Oh, my goodness.
Kimberly: We had to move in with a crane, and then we didn’t realize it was this ordeal, so we moved it into the current house now that I’ve been renting. Now, in the new house we had to get it moved in again with the crane. We’re like, “Oh yeah, we could just move it around. We’ll have it next to the altar at the wedding.” We’re like, “No, no, no. This thing is 500 pounds.”
Charlynn: Yes, so where’s it going to be?
Kimberly: It’s going to be right in the center of the home, so right in the, like, the living room. It’s kind of an open layout with like a kitchen, dining room, living room kind of all adjoining, so we’re going to put it right in the center. There’s a wood-burning fireplace. It’s where we’re all going to hang out most of the time, so it’s kind of like there in the middle of the home. Like, all the love coming through.
Charlynn: Yeah, the heart of the home. That’s so beautiful. I love it. What a perfect gift.
Kimberly: I know. It’s amazing. I have this probably like three ounce little rose quartz necklace I wear. I was like, “Oh, [inaudible 00:14:51] really love this spot. I love this crystal.” Then he’s like, “Oh, well, if you love that, let me get you this.”
Charlynn: That’s great.
We discuss how to foster more self-love and love in all its forms through essential oils…
Kimberly: Talking about that, Charlynn, one thing we talk about here on the podcast a lot, we talk about in the Solluna Circle, is love. Of course, it all starts with ourselves. It starts with self-love, but then new love, and old love and romantic love and familial love. So, we’re coming into the season now where it’s starting to get darker, we’re starting to be inward more, and there’s holidays coming up, but I think it’s a great time to maybe think about other practices, oils. Scent is such a powerful, mood changing thing, as you know, so how can we foster more self-love and love in all its forms through oils, Charlynn?
Charlynn: Oh, this is … I love this topic because as we shift toward the holidays and we start to think about … we are, we’re reminded of all the love and joy of this time of year, but also we can get so pulled by just the chaos and the busyness of the season, so self-love is more important now than ever. One of my favorite things to do, especially in the fall, because thinking practically, our bodies, what we’re going through as we transition seasons, our skin is affected quite a bit, so doing more oiling of the body. I tend to use more sesame oil that I’m massaging in this time of year. It’s a good practice to start to add some essential oils into whatever you’re putting on after the shower. Think of just a very quick practice, but very quick luxury, I call it, of self-care. You take a little geranium oil, which is great-
Charlynn: Geranium, great for the heart. It’s great for heart opening, great for reinforcing self-love, and put that into your sesame oil or coconut oil, what have you. Massage that all over your body to start the day, and then you’re left with that aroma to help … you’re sort of starting your day off with this self-love, practice ritual. The aroma is that reminder, though, throughout the day that you did that for yourself, and it helps pull you back into your heart, your heart space.
Kimberly: I love that. So, geranium is … it’s a flower, obviously. Is it a pink flower? I don’t really know what it looks like.
Charlynn: It can be. Yeah, it can be kind of … they’re pink, red, white I’ve seen. There are different colors, but strong association with the heart, chakra, along with some of our more expensive oils like rose and jasmine, of course, have a little bit more notoriety, but for the price and for the effect, I really … it’s not my favorite essential oil, truth be told, but I love the energetic shift with geranium. Yeah.
Kimberly: If you’re going to make your own massage oil like that, and I love that, how many drops would you put in for like a little … I’m so bad with the ounces and sizes. Like, a little bottle of it or like a little jar of it?
Charlynn: Yeah, in about an ounce, or one to two … one ounce, we’ll say. One ounce of your skincare oil, you’ll put about 6 to 12 drops, which is more than enough for most of us [crosstalk 00:18:19]-
Kimberly: Oh wow. That’s not a lot, is it?
Charlynn: It’s really not. It’s just a few drops, but a one-ounce blend for most of us would last several full-body applications. That’s a lot because we don’t … the oil, we can absorb it very well. It’s not like lotion. We don’t have to go through it as much. It doesn’t sit on our skin, we absorb it so quickly. Yeah, that would last … you could make that up on the weekend, and that would last you through the week.
If you should ingest essential oils and the effects it has on your respiratory tract…
Kimberly: Speaking of that, Charlynn, I want to get back to the love for a minute, but just as like a practical note, sometimes I get questions about ingesting essential oils. Then I’ve been doing some research, and I talked to this botanist guy, David Crow, who’s also amazing, and … anyways, he was saying that any sort of like ingesting of essential oils can actually damage your … like, the mucosal lining of your respiratory tract, and it’s not recommended at all because there’s actually essential oil companies out there that tell you to ingest it.
Charlynn: Yeah, it’s something that I’m really … I champion safe usage and educated usage, and I feel like this topic has been so blatantly misrepresented by … really, by people that are more interested in selling oil than in promoting the right usage. This is one thing that I’ve been offering to a lot of folks because we talk about it quite a bit, there really is … there’s no evidence-based usage for internal use of the essential oils. So, there isn’t research supporting dropping that oil into a glass of water or putting it into your food or putting it onto your tongue. There’s nothing that supports that. There’s no medical authority or health authority that’s promoting that usage. It’s really only being promoted by people selling the oil. First and foremost, I always say that should cause us to pause. Who’s recommending it and what is their investment? Think about how much we have to be protective of our skin. Essential oils can be very irritating, just to drop or two make your skin feel itchy. What we have to be careful about on the outside, we have to think even more so on the inside and its impact. One thing that folks don’t realize is that just just due to their potency and their structure, essential oils just aren’t the best option for us to use internally.
Charlynn: We can already get those volatile oils in the [inaudible 00:01:18] themselves and herbs and teas and tinctures and in flavors and extracts. We’re getting those in abundance in a mechanism that’s very safe for ingestion. So we don’t have to think about an essential oil, like we’re reinventing the wheel nutritionally. It’s functional purpose is to serve us topically.
Charlynn: The cool thing about an essential oil is that it’s small enough that it passes the blood-brain barrier when we breathe it. There isn’t anything else that we can breathe in to effect change, so I say leave the essential oil for the aroma and for its skin effect and go back to the plant for nutrition and for serving us for food, for support, for that internal medicine that we need that is very viable in the plant itself.
Kimberly: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Yes, because I used to get a lot of questions about lemon essential oil because as you know, Charlynn, we talk about drinking hot water with lemon in the morning and it’s just rejuvenative. There’s enzymes and vitamin C. Some people were asking me about drinking lemon essential oil and I was like, “No, that’s really not a good idea.” But again, I’m glad we’re talking about it here because there are companies that promote that and essential oils are so concentrated and they’re in these tiny little bottles. So there is that marketing aspect of it. They want you to use up more so that you buy more-
Charlynn: Right, exactly.
Kimberly: … and it’s just not a good idea to put essential lemon oil in your water.
Charlynn: No. Be your own self advocate first. Be aware of what works best for your body. Don’t just follow somebody else’s blind guidance around something that you might not know anything about. And one thing with lemon oil in particular is that it’s a high concentration of what comes from the rind and that’s the part that we don’t actually eat. When we’re slicing that lemon to put in our hot water, we’re getting vitamin C, we’re getting a lot of nutritional support that we can’t even have that conversation with an essential oil because it’s structurally very different than the fruit itself.
Charlynn: So I always say if you’re not going to squeeze pounds and pounds of rind, if that’s the part that you’re not going to eat, then don’t drop the essential oil into your water. Put that slice of lemon in. That’s the best source of vitamin C that you can get from the lemon in that interaction, not from the essential oils.
Love-promoting scents that will help to keep us centered around love…
Kimberly: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Thank you Charlynn for clearing that up. I thought that was important for us to talk about. And now we shift back to love, back to our favorite topic. So you know, again, it’s fall, we’re kind of cozying up more. The holidays are coming. What are some great love-promoting scents for the family, for your roommate, or for yourself if you live in your home by yourself, that can just kind of bring more of that vibe, help to keep us centered around love as the fall gets busier and busier and there’s all this planning, all this stuff going on. What can we diffuse or what can we put in our homes?
Charlynn: Some of my favorite combos that support that feeling of being comfort and grounded, loved, nurtured, establishing our home base, vanilla is one of the better bases to use because we all tend to feel comforted by it and it connects us to home. So when you take your vanilla and you add something spicy like cinnamon leaf or you add a little nutmeg, even some of those spicier aromas with the vanilla, bringing that comfort and love combination together. So a little bit of aphrodisiac plus comforting and you’ve got just a warm and a very inviting aroma at home.
Charlynn: You can also take some of those spicy combinations and throw a little bit of the floral into the mix, which we always… Rose, nutmeg, and vanilla is one of my favorite fall combinations because it brings a romantic, spicy, and sweet combination into the mix and it pulls all of those elements into the home. So you think about connecting with friends and family as they come over for the holidays, connecting with your loved ones, even making your home open to the possibility of love by creating, if you’re living alone, setting the tone for yourself helps set the stage for the rest of your life. So invite people in with the aromas and you’d be amazed at what happens just by setting, setting that aromatic tone so to speak.
Kimberly: So you can do this with diffusers, like you can actually those three different ones together, you can make your own little blend, or are you supposed to mix them before you stick them in your diffuser?
Charlynn: You could do it just very much on the spot by adding them together in the diffuser. You can make a blend ahead of time. I tend to make… I call them master blends. If I’m stuck on that combo, for example, vanilla, rose, and nutmeg, I’ll make a master blend of it and I’ll have a little bit to put in my diffuser and I’ll add a little bit to a body oil if I want to wear it. I get a lot of multipurpose use out of the blends that I make because I love the fact that you can take an essential oil and put it in your home space. You can wear it, you can wear it into work, into your day, and it has a different influence throughout your day depending on what you’re doing so-
Kimberly: That’s amazing.
Charlynn: Yeah. So I tend to do it that way, but it doesn’t have to be that complicated. It could just be done on the spot when you feel like in that moment I want to change my atmosphere.
Recommendations on how to combine your essential oils with your diffuser…
Kimberly: And then the right way to do diffusers. I’ve asked you this before, Charlynn, I know it seems simple, but sometimes they don’t smell that much for me and I’m just dropping it in the water. I fill it to that waterline. What could I be doing wrong?
Charlynn: Well, there are a lot of things that will get in the way of diffusion. So first, not every diffuser is created by the same manufacturers, so making sure that you’re following the drops that each person recommends. I’ve seen on Sonic diffusers recommendations as low as 10 drops, up to 20 drops, and that’s a pretty big range depending on what oils you’re choosing. So making sure you check out what the manufacturer recommends first, but then also knowing that there are certain oils like citrus oils… Structurally they’re called top notes because they are the first aroma that will hit you when you smell them either in diffusion or in a blend. They’re pretty volatile, meaning they want to move around very quickly. One of the common complaints is people will say like, “I love sweet orange, I put it into the diffuser, I smell it for a little bit, and then it’s gone.”
Charlynn: And then the answer to that is that it’s really because of their unstable nature. Citrus oils are only by design going to be in our airspace for about two hours maximum, even with the best diffusers. So the way to keep them around longer is to pair them well with other oils that can accelerate and their effect, but also create some aroma stability. Patchouli is commonly found with sweet orange. I know we’ve talked about patchouli a lot in the past, but it helps fix the aroma, so just like one drop of patchouli to those 18 drops of sweet orange will help that sweet orange stay around in your airspace quite a bit. Vanilla can do that. Sandalwood, vetiver, some of the deep base notes can hang on to those citrus oils a little longer.
Kimberly: That is great advice. I like that idea of combining. It’s like when you bake gluten free you’re supposed to mix gluten-free flours together and it does create a better outcome.
Charlynn: Right, right, yes.
Kimberly: That makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you, Charl. I’m going to try that because sometimes it’s frustrating. I’m like, I know I’m dropping it in. I know I’m filling the water or not. I see the waterline doing that. So what is it going on here? So that makes sense. Because I tend to like diffusing a lot of citrus and I love lemon grass and I love orange and some of the things you’re talking about.
Charlynn: Yes. Yeah. That’ll help. Give it a little base note to stick to and that can keep the aroma of the citrus longer.
Kimberly: Well, thank you so much, Charlynn. As always, you provide us with so much amazing wisdom from your vast storehouse of botanical knowledge. This is such a wonderful self-care practice, I think, to layer into what we’re doing. Scent is so powerful. As you explained on another episode. It affects your limbic brain, it affects your moods, so what a great tool to add in especially this busy fall time as well.
Charlynn: Definitely. Yes. Yes, everybody needs a little aroma therapy. I think if the whole world had some rose oil to smell we would all just be in a much better place.
Kimberly: I love it, and thank you Charlynn for that advice.
