How to Stay Spiritually Present During the Holidays [Episode #534]

[Podcast #534] Blog Graphic for How to Stay Spiritually Present During the Holidays [Episode #534] with Kimberly Snyder.

This week’s topic is: How to Stay Spiritually Present During the Holidays

When we talk about spirituality or spiritual growth, we’re really talking about being connected to your true self and really living your life from that deep place of connection. This will help you to understand and connect to yourself and others and to really connect to the true beauty, confidence, uniqueness and power that’s inside of you and to see it in others.

In order to stay at that grounded place of connection when there are so many details to take care of during the holidays, we need to make the choice that we do want to stay spiritually present. To continue to honor ourselves, staying grounded and rooted as much as possible during the holidays and into 2021.

Have you been wondering about this very topic? If you want to know the answer to this question and 3 more sent in by Beauties just like you, listen now to find out!

Cheyenne – Northampton, UK

Hi Kimberly, Please help! Everyone at work is bringing in cakes, chocolates, chips and dips and more every day. Because it’s free (and delicious) I can’t seem to resist! Yesterday I had your GGS and was so proud, but then I went and ate 4 large slices of fresh cream cake (and chips)! How do I resist? Thank you!

Emma –  U.K.

I’ve started working with ceremonial cacao and I’m wondering how this fits with the beauty detox lifestyle? It’s been suggested to start the day with cacao and meditation but would it be wrong (digestion wise) to have the GGS after this?

Samantha – Canada

I really do expect the impossible from myself when it comes to the holidays and seem to forget what it’s really all about. What can help bring me back down to earth?

Brandta – LA

Can you share how you stay spiritually present throughout the day, especially now, when it seems more important during the holiday season?

Kimberly: 00:00 Hey Beauties and welcome back to our Thursday community Q and A podcast where we have a fantastic topic today. It is How to Stay Spiritually Present During the Holidays. And when we talk about spirituality, when we talk about it as one of our cornerstones, spiritual growth, we’re really talking about being connected to your true self and really living your life from that deep, deep place of connection which helps you to understand yourself and to understand others and to connect with others and to really connect to the true beauty and the confidence and the uniqueness and the power that’s inside of you and to also see it in others. And so we start to feel more unity as we look around us in the world and as we continue to live our lives instead of division and separation and it really starts to transform our whole lives. As the topic relates to today, how do we stay at that grounded place of connection when there are so many details to take care of during the holidays?

Kimberly: 01:06 I know that I have gotten in a little bit of a flux here, just trying to figure out with Bubby and Moses to an extent, I mean he’s only a few months old. But Bubby, the gifts and the wrapping, and he’s so excited about Santa and making sure we have the vegan cookies and the carrots for the reindeers and just making sure everything’s really special. And I’ve already started to do Zoom holiday events with family members and people. I don’t know if you guys have gotten into that yet, but anyways, there’s a lot of detail around the holidays. Even though of course this holidays is different than other holidays, there’s still a lot of stuff that goes on. So how do we stay grounded? How do we connect back in and feel that peace in the whirlwind of life? And we’re going to get into all of that today. Really excited to hear what you guys have been wondering about.

Kimberly: 02:05 I’m also very cozy right now in my basement. Well, it’s like the bottom floor of the house. It doesn’t go underneath the ground, but it’s the bottom floor and it’s where I shoot all these podcasts. And I’m really excited to share that I’m getting the walls painted right around the new year or maybe right before the new year and I’m decorating the space. I’m going to add plants. It’s pretty utilitarian right now, there’s a lot of equipment. My printer is down here. My FedEx equipment or supplies are here.

Kimberly: 02:36 There’s one big crystal, there’s some books, but I’m really making it cozy and wonderful for our new circle app that is launching that I was working on today where we’re going to have live circles, live interactions, just this amazing community feed. That’s going to be part of it and I plan on shooting all the circles, the virtual circles down here. So I want to make it really amazing and cozy for you guys. I’m going to bring in some materials, I’m going to bring in more crystals and candles and just some really nice blankets so we can all feel as much as possible virtually because we know love and connection does transcend time and space, that we can just feel that coziness through the screen.

Kimberly: 03:22 So I’m really excited about that and I also have my baby monitor next to me right now. Just want to share quickly before we get into your questions and of course your topics that it has been such a huge, huge shift for me in the past now about 10 days since we decided to move Mosey into his own space, into his own room. He’s in his own nursery now. He was in our room, in our bed for his first six months. And then right around when he turned six months, 10 days ago, we decided to move him out.

Kimberly: 03:55 And now we’re both sleeping through the night, almost, there’s maybe one wake up. But his stomach is much larger now and so the last time we nurse and he eats at night, he’s carried through until, still wakes up pretty early around 5:00, but I’ve got to tell you guys, this is a lot better than it could have been or it has been. And it all came from that power of decision. It came from that power of choice. I decided I needed rest. I needed to shift my life and the details fell into place.

Kimberly: 04:28 So that’s sort of my overlying idea that I want to lead as we go into this topic is first we need to make the choice that we do want to stay spiritually present. We need to make the choice that we’re going to continue to honor ourselves and stay as grounded and rooted as possible and stay authentic to ourselves during the holidays and into 2021. Because if we don’t make that choice, other people make it for us and other people will make a choice about your time and your energy and how your life looks. So it’s just really important when as we start to get into this to really focus on, first of all, how powerful you are and that you do have this ability to choose. And you do have the ability to really create the day-to-day experience of your life, a lot of it from the internal state.

Kimberly: 05:31 And I know a lot of it seems like, “Oh, well, there’s all these external forces,” and that’s true. There is a lot going on outside of us, but when we choose, we step into a new reality and we start to shift our internal space. We start to feel empowered because we made those choices and those decisions and then things start to align on the outside. Even though we can’t control everything, it’s flu season and the weather might be cold and it may be rainy and all these things might be happening, but the power of choice is always the first and most important step or one of the most important steps but definitely the first step to step into a new reality and to improve your life. And in the case of our topic here to stay present and grounded and strong within yourself.

Question 1: Hi Kimberly, please help. Everyone at work is bringing in cakes, chocolates, chips and dips, and more every day. Because it’s free and delicious, I can’t seem to resist. Yesterday I had your GGS and I was so proud, but then I went and ate four large slices of fresh cream cake and chips. How do I resist? Thank you.

Kimberly: 06:24 So the first question comes from Cheyenne and she lives in North Hampton, UK. Hello Cheyenne. I wish I could say this question With a British accent because I absolutely adore the British accent and I have spent quite a bit of time over there and lived in Richmond just around outside London. I guess it’s part of London, the greater London area. I lived there once for about four months and I also did a semester at Oxford. So I really do love the UK. I also traveled through Scotland extensively, a little bit in Wales. But anyways, love the accent, love all you guys over there. The question is, “Hi Kimberly, please help. Thank you.”

Kimberly: 07:29 Well, Cheyenne, thank you so much for your question and for your honesty and also for the details. I can just imagine the piles of goodies that are around you and the temptation that’s around you that may feel very different than other times of the year. This is the time of course where more people like to bring in and they like to share. And that can be challenging of course, because one of the things I do is I, first of all, just try not to keep junk around. I will say that it does creep in sometimes. My husband got, he knows I love pretzels, you guys know I’ve had this long, long craving history with pretzels. But when he goes to Costco sometimes he surprises me with this huge bag of pretzels, even though I’m like, “Please don’t buy them,” but then I end up nibbling on them and I have been lately. So anyways, it happens to all of us.

Kimberly: 08:24 So first of all, Cheyenne, I would say, don’t beat yourself up so much. This is a unique time of the year. And so you don’t want to get down on yourself too much. At the same time, we want to make sure that you’re feeling your best and that you’re staying your strongest, your healthiest, your most energetic and you just feel really good within your body. So let’s take this one to the four cornerstone approach, which is food, body, emotional wellbeing and spiritual growth. Because when it comes to indulgence in sweets and foods and food cravings, this holistic approach is so applicable.

Kimberly: 09:05 And when I wrote The Beauty Detox Power, which is my third book, a couple of years ago, it was amazing. I was just starting to delve into this whole topic about food dependency and addiction and cravings and it was amazing how much research there really is around the psychological linked with the physical and the somatic and the layers and layers of our being that end up being very intertwined. And food is a form of energy, food can shift our mood and food creates a taste in our mouth which creates an experience which can take us out of a situation and leave us feeling elevated or heightened. It can do many, many things, but it’s important that we remember that it’s just one source of energy and there are many, many others.

Kimberly: 09:57 So in the cornerstone approach, let’s start with food. I will say Cheyenne, I’m so proud of you as well that you drank your GGS and I think that’s wonderful. I would also say to make sure that you are maintaining some food practices and beverage practices as you go into work to fortify yourself. So maybe you need to pack a lunch or figure out what your plan is and stick to that, eat that first before you allow one treat into your mouth or even one bite in. Because what happens I’ve found with clients over the years is once they start, “Oh, I’m just going to take a little nibble of this,” then it can escalate for some of us depending on our time and our vulnerability in the situation and we end up eating those four pieces when we just really wanted one, but then it just started snowballing.

Kimberly: 10:54 The difference is if you’ve eaten a really good lunch, let’s say this time of the year I imagine it’s quite chilly in the UK, so a nice big bowl of steaming hot soup. Maybe you had some avocado toast as well, whatever you have for lunch, you put that fibrous filling meal into your belly. Then you may have a treat on top of it, but you’re not going to be able to stuff yourself like this hot air balloon. Everybody says there’s room for dessert. You can still have a good amount of sweets, but if you’ve eaten a very good portion size of healthy food, it’s sort of like how I would say the vegetables are the bulletproof vest. If you’re going to have a big piece of something, pizza or meat or something heavier, have a lot of veggies with it to just help it digest better and to give yourself fiber, which helps to push the food through and also helps to just fill you up.

Kimberly: 11:51 So food wise, Cheyenne, I would say before you go into work, do your morning routine, drinking your GGS, your hot water with lemon, take your SBO Probiotics and then have your lunch. Or if that food’s around just really just commit to, “I’m not going to have it until I eat my lunch,” or whatever your food schedule is, “Until I eat my healthy food and then I can have it afterwards.” And right away, that’s going to start to cut back.

Kimberly: 12:17 Body wise, it is important right now to just feel your body. When we become disconnected with our body, we start to have all these little stresses and anxieties build up and we don’t know what’s going on, but it starts to accrue in our bodies. And right now you’re going to work in the middle of a pandemic, it’s cold and there’s all this stuff going on. So it’s really important that you do something like a yen yoga practice maybe for 10 or 15 minutes before you go to work. We also have our Beauty Detox Power DVD or download. It’s just saying DVD because we sold it as a DVD for the first year when people still used DVDs. Not that long ago, four years ago I think is when it came out, but still things have shifted rapidly. Or whatever, some kind of self-practice or something that you like and you could do some stretching just really to connect with your body. Or to go for a walk, so walking is wonderful for boosting your circulation and just feeling your body. Moving your body is a wonderful thing as well.

Kimberly: 13:21 Now, third cornerstone is emotional wellbeing, and I would encourage you here Cheyenne, to just journal and to take some time to really process your feelings this time of year. You haven’t mentioned anything about stress, but usually when people are eating very large amounts of food, it’s because there’s some form of an emotional unmet need. So it could be comfort. It could be love. It could be feeling connected, which is at the root of a lot of things. It could be just feeling worried and stressed.

Kimberly: 13:56 So just take a step back and take a breath and journal, just freeform write for five minutes. I can’t help but mention that in our new circle app as well, we’re going to have weekly journal prompts. So that’s going to be wonderful when that comes, but in the meantime, to just have this honest space to reflect and to see what may be going on with your feelings. You could just ask the question, “Why am I self soothing with food?” Just ask that question or write it down in your journal and then just spend the next few minutes seeing what comes up, processing.

Kimberly: 14:31 And then spiritual growth, our fourth cornerstone, is to center yourself. And of course we talk about meditation a lot here, but I would take it to a micro mini meditation where before you start to train yourself up, before you put that food into your mouth, you put one hand on your heart, one hand on your belly and you take some deep breaths and you just connect in with your body and you connect in with your body’s needs. And you can start to slow down so you don’t go into that automatic overdrive of stuffing all the food into your mouth. You slow down, you take a breath, maybe say a word or two of gratitude, or one or two things you are grateful for, and that can help reset.

Kimberly: 15:12 It can help us, “Ah, what was I going to do? I was going to just eat that whole bag of cookies? I don’t need that.” It’s just a way to self-center, self-correct. It doesn’t always work 100%, but I always find that when we take these sacred pauses and instead of rushing from one thing to the next, working really hard, “I’m going to stuff my face with all the pizza.” If we were to pause in the middle and just take a couple deep breaths, often that can just help settle us, let our shoulders relax, dissipate some stress, and potentially help us to abate and avoid some of this over stuffing. So try that approach Cheyenne and remember not to beat yourself up too much. And if it’s possible to get away from all that temptation, do your best, but remember that it’s just a limited time of the year. So don’t beat yourself up too much and I send you so much love.

Question 2: I started working with ceremonial cacao and I’m wondering how this fits with the Beauty Detox slash Solluna lifestyle. It’s been suggested to start the day with cacao and meditation, but would it be wrong digestion wise to have the GGS after this?

Kimberly: 16:11 This question comes from Emma, who is also from the UK. I wonder if we’re having like a kind of a UK day here. Hello, my beauty out there. You heard all I said to Cheyenne, I’m in love with your part of the world. And your question is, “I started working with ceremonial cacao and I’m wondering how this fits with the Beauty Detox slash Solluna lifestyle. It’s been suggested to start the day with cacao and meditation, but would it be wrong digestion wise to have the GGS after this?”

Kimberly: 16:42 So I love this. I love ritual and I love ceremony. And when I was doing live circles, we would add the element of elixir. And I did do one or two rituals with ceremonial cacao, but mixed in with some other things, mixed in with some Ayurvedic herbs and I put my own spin on it. But I’m a big proponent of ritual and ceremony to focus us and to focus our energy on something that is of very clear intention. So I think that’s really beautiful. I will say that I’ve had many different types of cacao ceremonies. I’ve been in ceremonies where the base is water. I’ve also been in a circle once where it was the cacao was mixed with an incredible amount of coconut oil and coconut milk. So it was very, very fatty to help ground the properties of the cacao. So there’s a lot of variety here.

Kimberly: 17:56 I would say that if you feel that it is, and of course I love the meditation, which I encourage all you guys to do with or without an elixir, with or without the cacao of course. And this app will have meditations every month. There’ll be a whole backlog of other meditations. And you can also check out our free meditations, we have a seven day free meditation starter series over at mysolluna.com. So please get into meditation, whether it’s that or another form that you resonate with.

Kimberly: 18:24 So the question is about having GGS after this. What I like about this idea is always to start with something hot, to start with a hot elixir. So for me, it’s often hot water with lemon and ginger. I’m actually sipping on ginger tea right now. So the idea of a hot beverage is always great. I say too if this cacao ceremony is feeling good in your body, then that’s wonderful. If the cacao is made with water, then you could do your GGS not too long afterwards and I think it would be fine.

Kimberly: 18:59 If it’s a very fatty cacao form of the ceremony that you are partaking in, like I was saying, there was one that I couldn’t even drink a third of this little glass because it was so much oil and it was so much coconut milk, that you would want to wait probably at least 45 minutes or an hour just because that fat is going to sit and it’s going to feel quite heavy. That was a pretty extreme cacao ceremony. Most of it’s in the middle, but you want to allow some time and just let things settle in and intuitively feel your body. But again, the main thing is that you’re doing this ritual, which is so beautiful and powerful with the meditation. So don’t worry too much. I don’t want to take that away from you or put any sort of worry in your head. Enjoy your practice and then just take a little bit of time and have the GGS afterwards. So think about it that way and I think it will work for you beautifully.

Break

Kimberly: 19:59 All right my loves, we are going to take a short break and I will be right back in just a few moments.

Question 3: I really do expect the impossible for myself when it comes to the holidays and seem to forget what it’s really all about. What can help bring me back to earth?

Kimberly: 20:08 All right Beauties, we are back from our break and we have our topic today, how to stay spiritually present during the holidays. Our next question comes from Samantha who lives in Canada. And cold, beautiful Canada, sending you a warm hug Samantha. She writes, “I really do expect the impossible for myself when it comes to the holidays and seem to forget what it’s really all about. What can help bring me back to earth?”

Kimberly: 20:38 So thank you so much my love for this question. And I think it’s very easy during the holidays to get caught in the cyclone, to feel like, “Oh my gosh, there’s so much to take care of. There’s so much to do,” and then to run from thing to thing to thing. And then this is often when we feel burned out, “Where did the day go? What am I doing with my life? The holidays suck,” all this stuff comes up.

Kimberly: 21:05 So I will say Samantha to really anchor in, as I mentioned earlier, but here again, the power of intention, the power of choice. Now on a micro level, not just for the entire holiday season, but every day grounding into your intention. So you could create an intention for the whole holiday season, through this period or this month or whatever feels good to you. Something like, “My intention this holiday season is to remain rooted in love and the spirit of connection and giving,” or whatever you want to create for the holiday. I’m going to root into that.

Kimberly: 21:48 And so what you could do is you would start your morning practice, as we mentioned, putting a hot elixir in your body, meditating. And if you could spend a couple minutes journaling, what I often do is I write my intention right at the top of the page, “My intention for the day is blah-blah-blah.” So you could say, “My intention for today is to stay grounded and loving during the holidays,” or whatever it is. And then you can journal a little bit about gratitude and you could shift your focus to all the love that you have, which helps to pour more love out of you.

Kimberly: 22:21 So that instead of just focusing on ribbon ties and which cookie recipe you’re going to make, which of course are details and they’re fun too, but getting caught up in all that you can focus on, “Oh, maybe I should call my aunt Linda and just tell her how much I love her this holiday season. I haven’t spoken to her in a while. She’s probably a little lonely.” Or you could just slow down and look right into your child’s eyes and give a big smile and just say, “I love you for you and I’m so excited we get to be here for the holiday together.” Or you could just slow down and look at yourself in the mirror and say the same thing.

Kimberly: 23:03 So it’s all about really, really connecting with intention and letting go of, as you said, this impossible list. I’ve fallen prey to this as well, believe me, this never ending to-do list, this never ending hustle of getting more and more done. And it really doesn’t feel good. Let’s be honest, yes, I might get more done, but at the end of the day, I’m burned out. And sometimes I just feel reactive and snappy and I’m too tired to do a really long meditation, which I like to do sometimes. And I will just say to just really get clear about your intention, bring that clarity and that focus. And when you do that, the details tend to take care of themselves and it’s a really powerful way to approach anything, including the holidays. So thank you so much Beauty for your question and for being part of our community, sending you so much love.

Question 4: Can you share how you stay spiritually present throughout the day, especially now when it seems more important during the holiday season?

Kimberly: 23:58 Now, our next question comes from Brandta who lives in LA and she writes, “Can you share how you stay spiritually present throughout the day, especially now when it seems more important during the holiday season?” So Brandta, I hope I’m saying your name right, or Brandta. Love it, very unique spelling, Brand and then T-A. Love, love, love. Love to you Beauty and I love this question because you bring up an important point, which is that it’s throughout the day. And I was just speaking to Samantha’s question about starting the day with intention and getting really clear.

Kimberly: 24:38 So that holds for this question as well and that’s really an important part of my practice. Even when my boys are both in the bed, as they are every day pretty much by 5:00 AM. And even when, you know I’ve got to say, sometimes I glance at my emails. It’s a lot going on. I don’t skip my meditation and my journaling because I know that if I do, I get thrown off. So the way that we start the day Brandta is a very important way to start to regulate the pace and the flow of your day.

Kimberly: 25:18 Then throughout the day, I do little check-ins now because I got pretty imbalanced a few weeks ago. If you guys follow me on Instagram, you saw I kind of played out that whole story where I hit rock bottom and just felt like, “What the F am I doing?” Like running myself ragged, like what is going on here? So for me now, I really think about the pace of the day and what is dictating it and where it’s coming from. And I do little check-ins. So I do mini meditations. I close my eyes, I put my hands on my heart or on my belly, and I just take a couple deep breaths. And so sometimes my mini meditations are a minute.

Kimberly: 25:58 And what I did today was I, it’s still a little warm here, quite warm as you know Brandta in LA. So I took my socks off and I just went on my lawn and then just took a couple of breaths. And I also, for me in the middle of the day now, when Moses is napping for his second nap, I go for a walk and it just reinvigorates me. It recenters me. I try to go in stillness, or sometimes I listen to mantra and sometimes I just love to hear the birds around. I almost always do it by myself, sometimes hubby does want to tag along for part of it and I love it to see when he wants to process something himself. And then a quarter of the way in I’ll say, “Okay, I love you. I’ll see you at home.” Because to me, those walks are really, really sacred and it’s being in nature and it’s another deep, deep form of a spiritual practice to me.

Kimberly: 26:57 So I have my nature time and my exercise time. I can accomplish two in one during those walks and it just feels wonderful. And again, the holiday season, the stress of that, of now, or other times, it’s just so important that we maintain these practices for ourselves. And then in the evening, again, mini meditations, breathing, checking in, hand on heart. What’s my body feeling? Just really asking these questions repeatedly to yourself as you get into a flow and then doing your walk. For me that 12:00 to 2:00 window is a really good time to break up the day. If you have any sort of liberation in creating your schedule, I think that’s a really nice time. Ayurveda says it’s, and some could say there’s a lot of interpretation with Ayurveda, but for a lot of our body types, it’s an ideal time to actually exercise is in the middle of the day when the sun is at its peak.

Kimberly: 27:58 So if you can, do your morning practice, get focused in work or your kids or whatever your flow is, and then if you can break up the day to reset and recenter right in the middle of the day. And then you have your evening practice and your evening meditation so that way you have the anchor in the morning, the anchor in the evening, and an anchor in the middle of the day, as well as the mini meditations that you could bring in. And I have put some mini meditations over on Instagram if you guys are interested. You can check them out and I will continue to post more. So wonderful topic you guys, I love this. I love that we can stay connected to each other and support each other during the holidays, during the busy-ness, during the hustle and the rush and the whirlwind, but to stay centered and it’s like we can be this eye of the storm.

Kimberly: 28:47 We can still stay grounded. We can still stay connected to ourselves. We can still maintain our practices, even though some things may go off the rails a little bit. And even though as Cheyenne was saying, we may indulge and that’s okay. Maybe we have a little bit more alcohol, maybe we just indulge in other ways, whatever it is. We may feel a little bit off, but as long as we’re maintaining our day-to-day practices for the most part, as long as we’re checking in with our body, we’re still going to stay centered. And on the other side of the holidays, we’ll have a much easier time getting back on track even if we got off a little bit or a lot. That’s okay, we will get back on. We keep moving forward and the ship keeps on sailing and we keep on evolving and unfolding these beautiful journeys for each of us.

Thought of the Week

Kimberly: 29:43 My thought of the week that I want to leave you with today is this simple one that I wrote right before the show and it does connect back in. It was something that I was thinking about is such an important topic to drive home. This overall idea about staying spiritually present is connecting inside and connecting inside is love, is everything that we’re searching for. So my thought of the week is if you are alive and breathing, then you are enough. If you are alive and breathing, you are enough.

Kimberly: 30:24 Just a little reminder that we don’t have to get caught up in the hustle. And your loved ones will love you whether you make every detail perfect or not and whether you do everything on your to-do list or not. You’re here, we’re here, this life is a gift. Every breath is a gift and you are enough just as you are. So I love you very much. I will be back here on Monday for our next interview podcast. Have a wonderful, wonderful weekend. Take care of yourself. Keep that beautiful breathing. Take it one step at a time and I will see you soon. So much love.
