This week’s topic is: 6 Tips to Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally
This topic, of course, falls into our body Cornerstone and the tips we’ll be getting into today span the Four Cornerstones because everything affects everything else. When we see these physical parts of our body like our skin and hair, it gives us a lot of information about our overall vitality and our overall health.
And this was one of the reasons that I got into this work in the first place, because I had so many issues with my skin and I had to go deep to see what I was eating. What my lifestyle practices were that were really inflaming my skin. And it’s the same thing with hair. Yes, we want to have great shiny, beautiful thick hair because it looks good and it makes us feel great, but it’s also indicative of what’s going on inside of us.
Particularly our Ayurvedic medicine talks about Pitta fire energy, which can become excessive, especially with stress, modern living, living in cities, where it tends to go up into our scalp. This is just one example of how stress in the mind and stress in our reactions actually manifests physically in hair loss and hair thinning. It’s really important as we broach this topic of improving and benefiting our hair health and take this expanded approach.

Of course, hair is part of our body. But as we’ll get into today with our very practical tips, the tips span the four cornerstones because everything affects everything else. So when we see these physical parts of our body, when we see our skin, when we see our hair, it gives us a lot of information about our overall vitality and our overall health.
And this was one of the reasons that I got into this work in the first place, because I had so many issues with my skin and I had to go deep to see what was I eating, what were my lifestyle practices that were really inflaming my skin? And it’s the same thing with hair. Yes, we wanna have great shiny, beautiful thick hair because it looks good and it makes us feel great, but it’s also indicative of what’s going on inside of us. And particularly our uve medicine talks about Pitta fire energy, which can become excessive, especially with stress, modern living, living in cities. And it tends to go up. So it goes up into our scalp. It can quote unquote burn out the energy up there, which in which has an impact on your hair. So this is just one example of how stress in the mind, stress in our reactions actually has a physical manifests physically in hair loss, hair thinning. So it’s really important as we broach this topic of improving and benefiting our hair health, we take this expanded approach, which of course we do with all topics here on our Feel Good podcast.

Question around the topic of: 6 Tips to Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally: I have been burning the candle at both ends with my work schedule and I have noticed my hair has gotten so dull and lifeless. What can I do to improve the health of my hair?
All right, let’s get right into our topic today. I love this topic, hair health. Let’s granular, but we’re gonna expand into it. We’re gonna see how everything interrelates. Our question comes today from Summer in Arizona. Summer. Thank you so much for writing in. Thank you for participating. Thank you, my love for being part of the community. Your question is, I have been burning the candle at both ends with my work schedule, and I’ve noticed my hair has gotten so dull and lifeless. What can I do to improve the health of my hair? So thank you again, summer. This is something that has been coming up a lot lately.
So we’ve been paying attention to that in the pulse of our community. And also just as in the collective when I did the podcast on the health trends and the forecasts with well and good in January, hair health and hair loss was one of the big trends with now I think over 20 million women in the United States alone experiencing hair loss now. So whether you’re in the category of hair loss or hair, um, summer wrote here, her hair is dull, light, lifeless. It’s feeling flat, it’s feeling thin. You, we know our skin, we know our hair, we know when something is going on and it’s not something, sometimes we can put an exact finger on like, oh, I didn’t change up my shampoo. What’s going on? Or, you know, why is my hair different now? We’re gonna get into that today. Um, we’re also gonna talk about some research as we go along, but first I just wanna talk about the phenomenon of hair in general.
So as I mentioned earlier, I’m gonna focus today on the hair on top of your head, although of course we have hair all around our bodies. But when we think about hair on our heads, on our scalp, um, there is a lot of energy points through the scalp and through the face. In fact, I believe that in some of the veic texts, they say one third. Okay? So marma points are energy points similar to acupuncture points. So there’s a lot of energy up from our neck up. And so whether we’re talking about, you know, from the Western standpoint, the brain, which we know takes about 20% of our energy or these eastern sciences are veda and traditional Chinese medicine, there’s just a lot of energy going up into the scalp. So we can see that the hair is affected by many things. It’s up, so it’s not in the center.
So if there is any sort of issues with circulation, for instance, or limited nutrition, it’s gonna be more challenging for nu nutrients to get up there. As I mentioned earlier in the show, there’s also this philosophy around Pitta, which is excessive fire. And this is the cause of aging. This is one of the causes of thinning hair, aging hair, is that we have so much fire inside of us from stress, from busy living, modern life, all of these different things that accumulates in our body. And it create, it burns up B vitamins. It causes stress hormones to be be released, released. It does many things. And one of the things is that this fire can burn out the hair follicle and create hair loss and hair thinning. So the hair follicle itself, when we’re working with the hair, we need to pay attention to the follicle where it’s starting, that it’s deeply nourished on all levels, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
So that is some of the background here. And then I just wanna dive right into the tips and we will, I’ll infuse some of the research into the tips. So the first tip, and this is gonna, these tip, these six tips are going to rotate around. There are no particular order, but we are going to be covering all of the four cornerstones, which again, our food body, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth.
#1 Tip To Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally: Massage your scalp to increase hair volume
But the first tip is to massage your scalp to increase the hair volume. Now, sometimes we don’t place power into simple things, and we think it’s always just about buying expensive products or this or that, but there’s actually research, clinical research, in particular a study from Japan, which I will link to in the show notes, which found that scalp massage actually did increase hair thickness and hair growth. This study was conducted over 24 weeks. So this is a tried and true rejuvenative known as Reina practice in Aveda. If you ever get an naiana massage or you do aga to yourself, which is basically warm oil, it is taught that the feet and the hair are the most in place, more, most important places to massage. Massaging your scalp, making this part of your evening practice is a way to naturally but powerfully increase circulation to the follicle. It’s a way of bringing in loving rejuvenative touch, which we know helps to relax and rebalance your nervous system. The power of massage is well documented across many cultures, but this loving self-care form really does work.
And it’s something that my Ayurvedic teacher in London who had the most gorgeous hair told me she had been practicing for years. And it’s something that I’ve witnessed in myself, particularly after giving birth to Moses, I noticed there was a lot of thinning in the front, sort of my hairline, especially on the right side, which I think a lot of new moms experience. And through massage in that area, I noticed it just started to come back a lot faster. So we will link to some of this research if you need more proof, but just know that literally with the fingertips, the soft part of your fingertips, massaging all around your scalp, all around the hair follicle is definitely going to benefit your hair growth.
#2 Tip To Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally: Essential oils for hair volumn
It’s connected to number two, which is essential oils for hair volume. So you can massage your hair, but if you really wanna up the ante, you also wanna, you wanna include some type of oil, oil or oils or formula that will help. Now there is research around this as well. There is a study in 2015 founding, uh, or finding that rosemary oil was helpful in treating, um, hair and scalp conditions. Another study found that lavender essential oil happened to thicken the thermal layer and the hair root, which stimulated the follicle, strengthened the roots and helped the hair grow. And so there’s other research I’ll, um, I will link to as well about some different oils. Now, traditionally in Aveda, there is the base of sesame seed oil, which is a warming oil, which you would also put into the hair. You could mix the sesame oil with some other herbs or find a really powerful herbalized formula and just put a few drops right onto the scallops. You really need a dropper. Only a few drops are what you need. And then you would massage that in and you could leave it overnight.
This is what Dr. Jay and Dr. Suhas, these incredible Ayurvedic physicians have shared with me. Um, you can wash your hair or you can wash it. It’s okay to let it sit for a day or so. I don’t wash my hair every day. Um, but I’m not also prone to really oily hair either. So I put on a few drops and it doesn’t make my hair oily. But of course, everybody’s hair texture is different. So if you, you do get oily, you can rinse it out or wash your hair more often or whatever. But the point is, these are not conditioning oils that you put at the tips of your hair, like you might avocado oil or argon oil. These are oils that go on the scalp to increase growth. So I just wanna be really clear about that. And then some of these key oils are sesame, rosemary, um, lavender, and there’s some other really great ones out there, but those are some, some ones that you wanna make sure that you, that you look for.
#3 Tip To Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally: Stress reduction and meditation
Number three, stress reduction and meditation. So I’ve talked a couple times about the fire is said to go up, right? So it’s sort of like we think about our heads and our brains and our egos and our overactive thoughts all day long. It just keeps going and going and going. And so we want to find tools to cool us internally. So when we are overactive, that’s described as rajasic energy, it’s a go go go sat thick energy is the calmness that literally helps your organs relax, it helps your nervous system relax. It cools this fire. And there is a very, the, the physical manifestations of stress have now been incredibly documented. I’m not gonna spend time today going into all of that, but we know that stress is what slows us down, leads to illness and just wreaks havoc in our bodies.
And so it’s really essential that we are consistently balancing that by expanding the connection inside of us to the true self. This is the only way we really buffet ourselves from the stress is that we don’t get caught up in it. We don’t identify with it. We realize that the surface of life, all of these happenings, all of the ways in which we look or what we’re doing, it’s really still the surface, the true self, the expansive energy inside of you is really who you are. So we wanna keep that anchor with us through the day that we stay calmer. We’re less reactive. We still have to get things done and deal with things, but it doesn’t have to feel so unhinged. This is a powerful antidote to thinning hair because it is also well documented that stress will literally leach be vitamins and other nutrition out.
It will leave you feeling depleted and dry and um, an unfavorable environment for your hair follicle. So what I offer here is strengthening and deepening into your morning practice, which includes your practical enlightenment meditation. Please check out the show notes for links. Guys, these are guided, they’re free. I offer them from my heart to your heart with the deepest of love. Take advantage. They’re about seven minutes each ground into yourself before you start the day. It’s the long term. We wanna feel good for the long term. We wanna feel like we’re enjoying our lives. We wanna have more peace, we wanna have great hair. So it takes focus and pouring some energy into each of the cornerstones. And that very much does include the spiritual cornerstone. And this morning I was on another podcast and I, she was talking about how much she loved the spiritual component of our work.
And she said, well, what would you say to someone that you know isn’t into spirituality? And I said, okay, if you don’t like that word, if it doesn’t resonate with you, simply substitute it with love. Cuz that’s really what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about going underneath the physicality of life into the underlying structure, the energy that interlinks everything, this oneness. We could think of it as a divine intelligence, the spirituality, we could also just think of it as love. Love is what is binding all of us. So the self-love, the ultimate self-love practice is to sit in meditation every morning. <laugh> just like drinking your hot water 11, taking your two SBO probiotics. We also sit to connect and to rebalance and to re strengthen our perspective that we are truly more than we think we are. And believe me, which feels like, oh, it’s, it’s great, but it’s separate. It’s not your meditations will benefit your hair. Okay, so that’s number three so far. We’ve got scalp massage, we’ve got essential oils, and we’ve got stress reduction.
#4 Tip To Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally: Healthy protein and fats
Okay, number four is now we’re getting granular into the foods. We’re gonna talk about healthy protein and fats. So your, this keratin, uh, type of protein in your hair needs to be replenished. Our body does recycle proteins by the way. And as we get really great with our detoxification flushing through, which means taking detoxy in the evenings, getting rid of getting rid of the gunk instead of your GI tract, which will then cleanse your blood and your lymphatic system and your whole system. You’ll become even more efficient at recycling proteins and cleansing your system of, of the waste autophagy. But in general, we wanna make sure that we are still consistently putting high quality proteins into your body, such as kale and other dark leafy greens seats, nuts, and the, the nice fatty nuts like walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, favorite of Hawaii.
And, um, the soups, the stews where you may cook in some lentils as I’m making for dinner tonight, I was prepping earlier. So that’s top of mind for me. All the other plant-based wonderful proteins and fats. So we want our hair, our follicles to get that nice deep nourishment. If we’re depleted, if we’re dried out, we don’t have enough fat in our body, it’s going to affect our hormones, it’s gonna affect our heart health and our hair health. So avocados and really, um, healthy oils. If we cook with some coconut oil, and again, some of those fatty seeds, the hemp seeds, which I put all the time on our dharmas kale salad. By the way, I am seasonal in that I have more chia seeds in the spring and the summer I make a lot of chia pudding. But right now I’m having a lot of, of what I just mentioned to you. So make sure that’s on point in your diet for sure.
#5 Tip To Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally: Calcium to strengthen your bones
Number five is calcium and anything that strengthens your bones. So back to our Veda, which has woven so much into our, into our discussion, especially today because our Aveda does have a lot to say about hair health. And there is a, um, there are, the dot twos are the different structures of the body. And when you’re working on a structure, you look at the preceding structure. I don’t wanna get too deep into this. Maybe we’ll do a separate podcast on the dot two s, but fat is really important for building bone. And then bone needs calcium. It needs these strengthening minerals and it’s believed that strengthens the bone. This, the datu, the structure of bone is also gonna help strengthen your hair. So when we think about bone health, we think about calcium. We are not going to go to dairy.
Okay? I haven’t gone into a long tangent on this in a while, but the countries that consume a lot of dairy tend to have the highest rates of osteoporosis because dairy, while marketed to us as being a great source of calcium, actually creates urinary calcium excretion. It is acidic when it digests, or a body has to buffer that acidity by actually leeching alkaline minerals from our bones, including calcium. So we want to go to plant-based sources of calcium, such as black beans and tahini and sesame seeds, and again, the dark leafy greens and all these other sources of calcium. I, when I was working on rebuilding my hair, I, I started having a lot of tahini and I still make this simple dressing all the time. Tahini, lemon juice, a little bit of sea salt and water blend it. You can make it as thick or as thin as you like. And then I would pour it over roasted cauliflower and broccoli and just get that into the body. Get that in, strengthen your bones, strengthen your hair. So that can be a mantra as well.
#6 Tip To Improve Your Hair Health and Boost Volume Naturally: Deep hydration
Number six is hydration. Okay, so when we are really deeply hydrated, and I’m talking really hydrated, it means that we can actually deeply, um, have that healthy follicle that not only grows, but grows su sustainably. Otherwise what happens if it starts being dih dehydrated, it actually breaks at the root or your hair will break before it gets to the length that you want it to be. So I wanna emphasize here that there is, it’s not just about water, although water is obviously a huge part of this. It’s about electrolytes. Electrolytes are really important because they are part of what is controlling the interstitial fluids and the fluid levels. So you wanna make sure you’re getting this balance of electrolytes.
And if you’re really working on your hair, I also recommend that you include some sort of hydration product. You might wanna look into that just to make sure you’re really deeply balancing your, um, hydration levels. Because that’s what happened to me. I noticed that I was dehydrated and I was just drier than usual. Um, I dunno if it’s cuz I’m on the plane a lot, just a lot going on. Of course there’s the heaters, but I started using this and I gave it to my dad as well because he’s chronically dehydrated this hydration, these packs, you might have heard me talk about them before from Element, and I’ll link to them in the show notes and also the ones that I recommend. And I think we have a little, um, a discount we can give you. So I’ll link to that in the show notes.
But the reason I talk about this is because we wanna go deeper, right? So it’s like when you’re having ice water, it’s not gonna really deeply hydrate you, right? So then we go to room temperature water. But then also there are times where we need something extra. So if you’re feeling intuitively, okay, yeah, I need some extra on this <laugh> here. Think about adding some of these electrolyte hydration products just to get yourself to a point where you’re really, um, deeply hydrated and your hair will deeply benefit from that. So as I mentioned, I’ll give some more information in the show notes on that if you’re interested. And also on all of this, some of the studies and the research we talked about, as well as other podcasts that I think you would enjoy. So let’s go through this again. And there’s a couple other things I wanted to add in.
So number one is scalp massage. Even if it’s two minutes every night, weave it into your practice, get in there, massage, connect to your hair. And then number two, use some beautiful oils along with this. You can look for a formula, you can use one just plain old sesame oil. But certain oils like rosemary are gonna be really great for in lavender oil, really great for stimulating growth. Number three, stress reduction meditation. So please do your meditation every morning. Also, think about ways that you can cool down your lifestyle. So that means less hurry, less packing things in, less alcohol, maybe less late night partying. Um, just cooling things down, right? What is inflaming your life is going to be inflaming your hair. So anyways, we can cool down the stress. It’s gonna definitely benefit your hair. Number four, healthy protein and fats in the form of dark leafy greens, seats, nuts, lentils, legumes, hummus, you know, all those yummy goodies, avocados, so and so forth.
Number five, bone health, calcium. It’s good for the bones, this is good for the hair. So think about those black beans, the tahini, the sesame seeds, strengthening foods here. And number six, deep hydration. So room temperature, water consistently through the day, glow and green smoothie as well, deeply hydrating. And think about some electrolyte packs. Um, and we’ll link to that in the show notes for some more information because I started using them and I really think it helped to boost my levels of hydration and hair growth. So there we have, I hope that some or all of these inspired you to make a great difference in your beautiful locks. Remember that the body goes through stages and cycles and it does rebuild. It can come back. So I’ve seen some amazing things. My hair has taken a hit several times. It was bad for a while, <laugh>, it wouldn’t grow.
It was really coarse. And then it’s got taken a hit from bearing children. But it comes back. And I notice when I’m off in my lifestyle, notice when I’m too stressed, I’m burning the candle, just as some are mentioned in her question. So with love and self-care and this expanded approach, your hair can also rebuild. So please let me know any questions that you might have. Let me know how I can continue to support you on the journey. As always, I’m so grateful for our connection and I look forward to connecting with you more. See you over on our website, my luna.com.
