So we really want to figure out how to overcome bloating with all the different ways, all taking a multifaceted approach, all the different ways that we can.
01:04 And today we’re going to be talking about how probiotics in research has really been shown to help combat this issue for the longterm. So I’m very excited to get into our show today. It’s practical, and I will leave you with some tips and takeaways as always for how you can incorporate this into your life. And also some other ideas around bloating as well. Question around the topic of: How New Research Sheds Light On The Positive Effects Probiotics Has On Bloating: I’m new to Solluna and suffer from bloating and other gastrointestinal issues. I have been reading about new info on probiotics and their effects on bloating and other issues. With so many choices out there it’s confusing. Can you shed some light on how probiotics work and how they can help.
Let’s get right into our show today. And our question comes from Sonia, who lives in New Hampshire. Sonia, thank you so much for submitting your question. It is always amazing to hear directly from our amazing community, and I’m sure many people have the same questions as you.
02:09 So from the bottom of my heart, thank you and sending you much love. And your question is, I’m new to sauna and I suffer from bloating and other gastrointestinal issues. I have been reading about new information on probiotics and their effects on bloating and potentially other issues. There’s a lot of confusion though, and there’s a lot of choices. Can you shed some light on how probiotics work and how they can help? Sure. Sonia. So thank you so much once again. And I understand that there’s a lot going on out there. There’s a lot of information. There’s a lot that’s being continuously funneled our way.
Why we need probiotics and how to think of it in a simplistic way
So before we get into the actual research, I just want to speak a little bit probiotics in general, why we need them and how to think of it in a really simplistic way. So in my personal journey, I was bloated for many years and this was incredibly frustrating because my, so much of my attention at that time was wanting to be thin, wanting to have a flat midsection, wanting to look a certain way, and I was starving myself.
03:23 And at points I would binge, but I was always bloated no matter what. And I started to make some dietary shifts like giving up dairy for instance, and food combining, which really helped. And that is part of this as well. We aren’t just talking about probiotics here, but this holistic lifestyle in order to feel our best, which is really what we teach. But then I realized that because of all the sugar, because of all the crappy food I was eating and bingeing and stress and alcohol and many other things, my gut was completely imbalanced. And even if I did cut those foods like the dairy, the bloatedness was better. It was less painful, but it was not right. So we think about the ways in which we live today, which is go, go, go. Everything’s available, that we want all the junk food, we’ve got the artificial lights, we’ve got cell phones now we’ve got so much that can keep us with concrete cities.
04:33 I mean, it goes on and on. And there’s so many different things and ways in which we live on natural lives. And if you go back in time to how our ancestors all lived in this really close connection to the forests and the fields and nature, which sounds really idealistic, but it was because back hundreds, thousands of years, most of our ancestors did not live in urban environments. And this is one of the reasons I love to be in Hawaii so much. I love to get my fingers in the dirt and my kids are barefoot for weeks at a time, and there’s something very calming to it and there’s something really relaxing to it, and there’s something that just feels amazing to me. So from a health and nutrition standpoint, this closeness to the earth means that our ancestors were foraging. They were starting to grow food, they were picking fruit, they were not washing it.
05:34 So they would get their probiotics from the soil, from eating unwashed fruits and vegetables. And when you look in the market today and you see how everything is so scrubbed and sanitized, and a lot of times unfortunately it’s been shipped from across the world, we realize that we’re living in this way that feels very fragmented from our natural inclination, our natural upbringing, which is to be local and natural and simple, and to have this furnish us through the probiotics which are in the soil. So in the soil are soil SBOs, soil-borne organisms that are hardy enough to survive stomach acid. And so our ancestors weren’t taking supplements, they weren’t micromanaging everything. They weren’t counting calories, they also weren’t staying up late at night, drinking alcohol, partying, working all ends, burning both ends of the candle and so on and so forth. So this simplicity of this natural lifestyle was so healthy.
06:45 There was things that weren’t healthy. Of course there was a lot of bacterial infections and we didn’t have certain advancements in medicine and for trauma and accidents of course, and childbirth was a whole other situation. But in some ways there was this glorious simplicity. And so when we look to what is natural for us, I truly believe what’s natural is to have energy and to feel our wholeness and to make simple choices without having to think so much or pull out a calculator about what to eat for dinner or what if it’s okay to eat a banana, right? There’s a real simplicity and then there’s a relaxation in the body. And as tension relaxes in the body, there’s actually more coherence. There’s a better balance to your nervous system between your sympathetic and your parasympathetic nervous system isn’t in a chronic stress state. So we end up aging less quickly, we end up digesting more, and our immunity is higher nowadays.
07:52 Sonia, back to your question where there’s just a lot of choices, there’s a lot of confusion because we’ve lost touch with our natural intuition. We’ve lost touch with a natural lifestyle. Instead, it’s like putting together all these little fragmented parts and trying to piece together self-care piece together what health is or what wellbeing should look like instead of being so connected to our bodies and to nature that it flows out from us in this very organic way, in this very natural, interconnected way. So that’s the background that I wanted to share, that as we come more into this natural lifestyle and its components, the more our bodies heal. And it is not natural to be bloated. It is not natural or our natural state to constantly be in digestive distress. So it’s very important that we really work to create that balance. And one of the ways that we can do that is to take our probiotics daily and specifically our Ss b o probiotics as I have for over, I want to say how many years it’s been now, many years we’ll say I’m not great at tracking numbers, but two a day when I’m traveling, I take ’em to Hawaii, I take ’em here in la, I take ’em when I’m pregnant, I take ’em when I’m nursing, I take ’em when I’m not.
New Research Sheds Light On The Positive Effects Probiotics Has On Bloating
09:21 And it’s just a really wonderful holistic aid, really a balancer for your whole system. And now we’ll get into some of the research where, for instance, in 2018, what they found was that when people took probiotics, it helped to support i b s, which is irritable bowel syndrome, which is the bloating, the abdominal pain in the diarrhea. And so what we can surmise is that by giving yourself these healthy bacterium to help balance your microbiome, there’s a calming effect, right? It’s like in Ayurveda, if there’s too much Pitta, if there’s too much fire, if there’s too much acid, it creates inflammation. It burns your system. So we want to create more balance. And so the good probiotics are coming and creating these more synergistic colonies within your own gut. And your gut is your core, right? When we get deep into our bodies, our hearts, we feel love and down into our guts where we feel instincts and we feel our personal power, we want that area especially to be balanced.
10:30 Otherwise we will not feel peaceful and we will not feel confident in the truest most true way because we’re feeling big, we’re feeling wide, we’re feeling uncomfortable in our own bodies. So it’s something that really does need to be remedied. And now the American College of Gastroenterology in 2021 mentioned that, and I’m going to link to all of this in the show notes because it gets a little bit in depth. They said, oh, there was some conclusive evidence around certain individual systems, but there were some symptoms rather of I B Ss and bloating, but there were some inconsistencies in the research. So we want to look specifically within it as well, within all the different minutiae, all the different details, there’s many different symptoms. For instance, another study talked about abdominal distension and found that probiotics could help modify the gut microbiome and help to reduce that distension, whereas some other research focuses on other areas of i b s potentially like diarrhea for instance.
11:47 So there’s a lot of research out there. I mean, you can take the rabbit hole as deep as you want to go. We’ll to, I’ll say we’ll link to at least 10 or 12 studies if you want to read them. I like reading through the studies. I like to skimm them. I like to read them and dive deep into some of them that really call to me. And if that’s of interest to you, I encourage you to do that. But if you’re someone that tends to get more confused, the more you read, really you want to focus on what I mentioned earlier, which is that it’s natural for us to live in accordance with nature. It’s natural for us to eat fiber. It’s natural for us, which are natural prebiotics. It’s natural for us to have circadian rhythms and to not be in a chronic stress state.
12:36 And it is natural for us to consume, have a consistent source of probiotics continuously in our bodies, which used to be from the soil. And now we need to supplement because again, we live in this unnatural environment. And so there’s also research around children. This is published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology Nutrition this year, 2023, found that children who had gastrointestinal disorders associated with bloating were treated and were able to reduce their symptoms with probiotics. So this is great to remember that our kids need probiotics just as we adults do, and I do give my kids probiotics and also tons and tons of fiber, which I think is really important for the overall gut health and our overall functionality and health as humans. So this is a human issue we’re talking about here, not an adult issue. I just wanted to really point that out, and this is really interesting.
13:49 A study published in the journal, neuro Gastroenterology and Motility in 2018 found that the probiotics helped to reduce bloating and improved overall digestive systems symptoms and helped with motility meaning better movement throughout your GI tract. So that means that, and I’ve always talked about this part of bloating is that there’s a lack of movement or what Ayurveda would say, Vata energy moving through. So there’s a stagnation that happens. Sometimes there’s excess Vata, and that also leads to constipation. But we need movement. We need water, we need fiber, we need this energy of letting go instead of constantly gripping, holding, controlling from an emotional standpoint. So probiotics can very much encourage that movement. They’re dynamic, right? They’re alive, they’re these little tiny microscopic beings, but it’s adding life where there may be just this, almost this, I don’t want to say the word deadness, but this stagnation in different parts of us.
15:06 So what’s exciting about taking the probiotics is it’s adding this prana, this aliveness if you will, into areas to increase this motility, this dynamicism, which can be really powerful when the less we’re bloated. There’s certain things, there’s certain signs that we are truly healthy, and I prefer to use these signs rather than just weighing myself or focusing on counting carbs or whatever it is. One of them is natural bowel movements or digestion is really inherent to us. Then another function for us women is natural healthy menstrual cycles is a really important marker of our overall health and wellbeing and how we sleep and all these other markers are really important. So if we’re chronically noticing an issue with any of these, and particularly as we talk about today, constant digestive issues, we really don’t want to ignore that. We don’t want to push it under and pretend it’s not there.
16:14 We don’t want to get embarrassed by it, but we very much do want to make sure that we are continuing to take a look and introducing probiotics into our system, modifying our foods, potentially seeing if there’s certain foods we’re more sensitive to and many other factors. There’s chemicals, there’s cleaner water, there’s the environment, our personal environment and stress and many other things. But I just really want to encourage you, as someone who suffered for many years with bloating and feeling uncomfortable in my body, we want to address it. And on the other side is lightness, is movement is just feeling so much more powerful in your body and present the bloating is distracting. It’s like we’re trying to have this conversation or we’re trying to focus or be creative in something, but we’re constantly focused on our bellies and it’s very, very distracting to say the least.
17:20 So I’m just going to pick through some of this here because there’s so many different studies. There’s so much here about, again, as I mentioned, there’s some research that’s limited, some that’s been inconclusive, but overall there’s a lot that points to how probiotics can be very helpful for bloating overall and for the long-term. And not just bloating, but also I would say mood regulation. Because as we know, most of us know now, there are these brain-like cells in our gut, these neurotransmitters, and there’s a relationship between our gut and how we feel. And so it’s so important if you feel down, if you feel starting to feel foggy or confused, frustrated in life, that you really start to pay attention to this. You do not have to live that way. Everything goes hand in hand. When my gut started healing and I started feeling lighter and the weight just kept off naturally, I started to grow and my interest in spirituality, and it became easier for me to sit in meditation and for me to contemplate these big spiritual truths. Whereas if I didn’t get my gut under control first, I’d be focused on that primarily because it’s very difficult to go deeper within yourself until you work on the immediate fire, the immediate thing that needs to be addressed.
How New Research Sheds Light On The Positive Effects Probiotics Has On Bloating: Balancing Gut Microbiota
18:52 A couple of things I want to mention here as well, from a scientific standpoint, that as we take probiotics, we balance the gut microbiota, which means that it’s the imbalance. There’s a lot of research around this as well. It’s the imbalance inside of our system that contributes to gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating. So if there is something happening there, an imbalance has been created and it’s not natural and it can be worked on. I just want to mention that again.
How New Research Sheds Light On The Positive Effects Probiotics Has On Bloating: Reduce gas production
The second part is that we can reduce gas production from taking probiotics. And how this helps is because when we are in a state of dysbiosis and imbalance, an excessive amount of gas is led off by these microorganisms, and we’re also not digesting properly. And also food combining has a part of this as well. I can’t help but mention if we’re eating a lot of fruits, for instance, lighter food mixed with heavier food, we’re mixing of whole mishmash.
19:58 Sometimes the digestive enzymes are working on the foods and everything just starts to slow down and starts to release gas. So that’s another thing we want to pay attention to is to eating light to heavy, having salad and then veggies and then whatever we’re eating, eating fruit on an empty stomach. And then the probiotics will help though in more efficient digestion and less gas release. I will also mention that in my experience with clients is that when you start taking probiotics, especially really powerful ones like our sauna, SS b o probiotics, which have the ability to survive your stomach acid and get to your gut and actually start to implant and start to go to work, there is a temporary period that some people go through of one day, three days, generally less than a week where they experience bloating still because there’s a die off period.
How New Research Sheds Light On The Positive Effects Probiotics Has On Bloating: Anti-Inflammatory Effects
20:53 As we are shifting the gastrointestinal balance and some of the harmful bacteria is killed off, they can release gas. So I have noticed a little bit of a transition for some people, not everyone. So if that happens to you, do not be alarmed. Do not think that you’re alone, that you’re the only one that’s experienced this issue because it does happen and it can clear the pathway for much better digestion ahead, which is the great news. So another thing I want to talk about here is inflammation. So inflammation through the body and especially in the gastrointestinal tract, can also contribute to bloating and discomfort. That is why there are all these different sort of inflammatory conditions can really, it’s this inflammation in the gut lining. So inflammatory foods can vary for each person. We may have different sensitivities. There are of course autoimmune conditions which create this sort of inflammation within us, like Crohn’s disease and so on.
22:03 So we want to make sure that whilst the probiotics can help, we might need some guidance here in terms of food from an expert or to research a particular condition. And to also notice I feel quite inflamed if I am eating tons of hot sauce, for instance. It’s a bit of an obvious one I pointed out because my husband tends to pour a lot of hot sauce on his food. I say, doesn’t that give you, does a burning sensation? Doesn’t that feel like you’re burning the flavor out of the food? But he really enjoys it? Do you notice his face getting a little more red? So everybody is on their own journey. Everybody’s paying attention and will in different ways and has to assess and intuit what’s best for their body. But inflammation is something that can definitely contribute to bloating as well, which would need other aids potentially, depending on your condition beyond probiotics.
How New Research Sheds Light On The Positive Effects Probiotics Has On Bloating: Regular bowel movements
23:09 And then the next thing here I want to talk about is that having regular bowel movements, I want to cover this again because it’s really important, is critical to feeling good, to feeling present and joyful and light in your body to having clear thoughts and to having lighter, more positive moods. When I didn’t go to the bathroom regularly, it’s when I felt the most heavy in my life. It’s when I felt the most confused and the most anxious. Probiotics are very important, as I mentioned in that earlier study around motility, because we have that balance in our gut, it creates the right environment for bowel movements to be regular and to be more frequent. Now I can say after years and also taking our detoxy, which is an oxygen based supplement, I take many evenings, sometimes every evening to have a bowel movement every morning.
24:05 And then when I don’t, I feel clogged and I feel like I don’t write as well and my work is off and I just don’t feel as good. And so especially if you are someone who’s sensitive to traveling or stress or whatever it is, it’s really important to make sure that the rhythm of your bowel movements is happening every day. It’s regular. And that this alone will also help to reduce bloating on a regular basis and to keep you feeling lighter and just more of your authentic, amazing, true self energy coming forth. So as you can tell from the show, all the research and all the points and my explanation about natural living, I’m a big proponent of taking probiotics every day just as I have to keep your bloating under control. And also along with taking your daily probiotics, I take two every day and I recommend that you take them at a regular time so that you don’t forget.
25:17 Best is morning hot water with lemon regular water. Take your two SBO Probiotics. I also recommend that you check out and be aware of any food sensitivities. And we have articles on my website. My first book, the Beauty Detox Solution, talks about food combining eating light to heavy, which can also help a lot with bloating and just having more energy as well. I also recommend taking digestive enzymes that can help before lunch and dinner, just to also, we just want to keep nourishing our gut in all the different ways. And also, please make sure that you’re taking fiber, eating fiber. Lots of plant-based foods twists are great. Stretching. You can actually physically twist your gut area, which is really wonderful for also increasing circulation and motility movement, natural movement. Ayurveda has always said that walking is a really wonderful practice for your gut, for your digestion.
26:15 So I really recommend that you walk as much as possible and do the exercises that feel good to you. And of course, drink lots and lots of clean filtered water, which your gut also needs to function well. And then a less tangible, less physical is of course stress, which can really create the dysbiosis and stress is really our reaction, our resistance to all the things coming traffic’s there, we can freak out or we can just take some deep breaths and keep ourselves in a more calm state. So whatever it takes to hurry, less schedule, less meditate daily, really taking some practices so you don’t get as stressed, it’s going to really benefit your body from a physical standpoint, emotional, mental, spiritual standpoint. So we have a lot of offerings for that as well. Meditations over on the website. So I hope all of this was inspiring to you. I hope you’re as excited about probiotics every day as I and I very much hope that you overcome any bloating issue that you may have. The way that I’m so grateful to have overcome, and I’m here to support you in any way. Please keep your questions coming. You can also find me on social at underscore Kimberly Snyder. There’s many ways to find me. I’m here, I’m listening. I’ve been through all these issues, a lot of the same issues as you, so I understand and I’m here to help, which is the intention of our show and all my books. So I send you lots of love. We’ll be back here Monday for our next interview show. Until then, take care and sending you much love. Much aloha and Namaste.
