I’ve been talking about food combining since my first book, the Beauty Detox Solution, which published back in 2011. So I love talking about this topic because I’ve seen so many just incredible benefits for over a decade with clients, with readers. It’s just this eye-opening shift in how we look at food. 04:23 For today, our question comes from Grace who lives in Texas, a state packed with incredible beauty, detoxers and Solluna. Listeners, we get a lot of feedback and questions from Texas, so sending you so much love, grace, I am very grateful we are connected. Thank you for your question. You wrote, I am looking to learn more about proper food combining. What are your thoughts and tips for using it in your everyday life and the benefits? So as I mentioned at the top of the show, what food combining essentially is, is a way of looking beyond numbers. Just straight linear quantitative analysis like calories and grams of protein and grams of carbs and grams of sugar and so on and so forth, into how do we simplify the foods so that energetically it’s less work for our body.
05:36 Our body is able to more efficiently take in the foods, assimilate the goodness and the deep nutrition, and then expel out the rest efficiently. So it’s about simplicity and it’s about efficiency. And that is the core thing that you need to, to understand. This isn’t about trying to make your life more complicated. It’s not that this is something that you’re gonna have to get a calculator out and track or chart necessarily. Once you understand some of the very simple rules, which we’ll talk about today, you can just incorporate it in your life as much as it feels good, it starts to feel easier over time. 06:45 You will, um, you are More Than You Think You Are. That’s the last book. The first book is called The Beauty Detox Solution, where there is a whole section on food combining and also eating light to heavy. So I will also say that these principles have guided my diet now for well over a decade. They have made a tremendous impact on my life and many other lives. Some of the benefits include less bloating, more energy, brighter skin, more complete efficient bowel movements, more overall prana, life force, vitality, just this, this juiciness of beingness as we move through life. So along with that, as we continue to make digestion more effective and efficient, we will also experience more creativity, more clarity, more focus. So the mind and the body are interlinked, hence we talk about them in this inter integrated way with our four cornerstones, more emotional calmness, more poised, more peacefulness, and then in terms of your body, a potentially flatter midsection and an easier time maintaining your desired weight. So it really does expand, it expands the gamut physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and all, all of these have a positive impact, potential impact from food combining. So there isn’t much double blind placebo controlled studies around this for different reasons. It’s a, it’s kind of a, a, a different idea than what’s commonly promoted in the western world. We look to who is funding studies, what is the vested interest with food combining? No one’s gonna benefit or profit. So it’s not really something that’s been specifically studied. I will say that Aveda, which is the time
08:54 Honored medical, the oldest medical system in the world has talked about food combining for millennia. There are also these four mothers and four fathers of food combining, including Dr. Ann Wigmore. And I did study at the Doctor and Wigmore Institute in Puerto Rico many times, and she was a deep proponent of it, as was Herbert Benson and many others. And there’s more references and and and um, conversation around this topic in the, in the book and then in the Beauty Detox Solution. But I would offer to you that just like anything else in life, the most important and the strongest quote evidence is your own experience. And this is why intuition is such an important part of us taking control of our health and our wellbeing and our wellness and starting to really get the benefits that we want. We have to take this intuitive approach.
09:59 What is it that’s gonna really help me and support me? Does this make sense? And then we try it out in our own lifestyle, in our own bodies. And if we benefit, is that not worth it? Right? It doesn’t matter whether some study funded by, we don’t know who says yes or no, but if you try something, let’s say you drink the glow green smoothie and you’re like, oh my gosh, I feel so much energy, this fiber is keeping me full, I’m feeling great. There’s your evidence right there. And so I would encourage you with food combining to take the same approach and to say, okay, if this is interesting to me, let me put some of this into practice and see what happens in your body. Everybody’s body is different and like I said, this is the strongest evidence that makes the most sense.
10:51 So let’s talk about food combining. So we are this, we, we have this, we, we are the energy inside of us, the true self, your soul spirit. And we’re walking around in the world with this individualized, so to speak, bodily temple. So even though we’re all connected to source, we have this incredible temple that is taking us through life and we want to honor our temple and we wanna take great care of it, which is, you know, deep self care, which comes from deep self connection. And then we realize as we go on that the most energy intensive process, one of the most energy intensive processes in the body is digestion from start to finish, from mastication chewing all the way through assimilation and the transit through our very long and convoluted GI tract through the colon and the rectum into elimination. So the entire process is quite energy intensive.
11:57 So the goal of food combining is simply to make the process more efficient. Every food that we put into our system, every food that we put down, that we take in. So think about that for a minute. We are taking in nourishment, we are taking on energy. Every food that we take into our body has a different energetic profile. It also has a different physical profile in terms of the density, how many fat, how much fat it contains. And protein, again, not just from a strictly quantitative analysis, but the general characteristics of each food. And so with food combining, we want to think about, we wanna take a step back and think about if I really honor my bodily temple, and I don’t wanna overtax it, just like if you were to jam on, you know, the breaks and the accelerator and crank the gears of your car, if you have a manual car while you’re driving, why do we wanna do that?
12:59 Why do we wanna give access, wear and tear to the machine, right? We’re calling our body a machine here. There’s already a lot going on in life. There’s already pollution and stress and um, just a lot, a lot <laugh>. So why not make digestion a process that we have to engage in every day, unless you’re cleansing day in and day out, you know, morning time Glowing Green Smoothie®, and then lunch and dinner and snacks. Why don’t we just make it more efficient? It means day by day, week by week, month and years to come, there’s less wear and tear. And so in turn, as I mentioned earlier, we can experience more vitality and more energy and more of this energy flowing and being freed up from digestion to going into healing our skin, creating radiance into our liver, into our respiratory system, into more energy to expel toxicity from our lymphatic system.
13:52 Whatever it is, we wanna redistribute the energy around our bodies. So the core principle of, so now I hope you’re excited about the potential benefits because yes, we can, um, you know, go on a yoga treat a couple times a year or whatever, you know, we’re doing there, but when we could do something even a percentage of the time in our daily life, now we’re starting to unlock some real deep long-term solutions that will surely benefit us. So here are some of the benefits, or sorry, here are some of the principles. And again, I’m gonna run through them. You can also reference them in the show notes and take a screenshot or copy them and paste them or write them down or whatever you wanna do. So the number one thing is to simplify your meals just across the board. What does that
14:50 Mean? It means instead of going to the salad bar and taking 15 different things, adding it into a little bowl, take two to four things and eat more of those things. Okay? So we wanna have less different foods in general in each meal because each food has different substrates. It requires a different mix of digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid to break it down. And so when you are just in general simplifying or mono eating, which is what our ancestors may have done, children often do mono eating, meaning you eat a whole bowl of cherries for your snack or some cashew versus again, 10 different things at once. Your body will more efficiently digest what it is that you are eating. So that’s the first principle is to simplify. Number two, hydrate in between meals, more drink water and liquids between meals. And while you are eating, try to minimize liquids.
15:58 It doesn’t mean you can’t have any, you can certainly sip some water or some hot tea or whatever it is. But if we’re chugging lots and lots of water while we are eating food, we can dilute our digestive enzymes and make the digestion process more difficult. So get in the habit of hydrating between meals, which also helps to curb cravings. It also helps to balance your natural appetite. And so when you do eat, you are able to really thoroughly and efficiently digest that food. Number three, you want to eat fruit alone or on an empty stomach or just with green vegetables, as in our glowing green smoothie. Fruit is the highest pinnacle food in terms of energy. So the yogis will say fruit is the highest vibration. It’s, you know, the flour falls from the tree and then the fruit comes. It is this beautiful thing that we wanna honor.
17:00 We wanna take in all those vitamins, all the different components of it, but we want to honor that. It is also made of simple starches, sugars, and water and fiber. And so it moves very quickly through our GI tract. So we don’t wanna create a traffic jam by eating something heavier or more dense like a bunch of protein. Um, you know, let’s say a bunch of hummus or lentils or Tempe or if you do eat some animal protein, let’s say a piece of fish and then you eat blueberries for dessert, the berries would be stuck behind the denser foods. If you think about your GI tract as a road, and that would cause a traffic jam, meaning the gases could be released prematurely. There’s putri, you know, putrefaction fermentation prematurely happening higher up in
17:48 Your GI tract. And this can lead to gas release and bloating. So simply just think about fruit in your g s is fine or fruit in the mid-afternoon or cut, you know, mid-morning after g s, but try not to eat it directly after heavier foods. And then the last rule, which I will say here, is to try ideally as much as possible to avoid combining dense starches and dense proteins. Instead, you would combine those foods with vegetables. This is because proteins and starches do require different enzymes to break down. It will move easier through your system. Again, if we simplify. So let me give you some examples. If you’re gonna have a piece of Tempe, for instance, you wanna have a salad with it, you wanna have some cooked cauliflower, veggies, whatever, and the Tempe, or you’re gonna have fish or chicken if you eat animal protein, again, our community is not all or nothing, although I will say that I am personally plant-based.
18:59 I’ve been plant-based now for, you know, 14 years or more. And I do recommend eating a plant-based diet or at least a largely plant-based diet. But if you eat some animal protein, the example is chicken or fish, bunch of broccoli and a nice big arugula salad that is easier on your body. Or the flip side is let’s say, now remember legumes, this is where I wanna get too confusing here. There’s again, there’s more detail in the beauty detox solution, but there’s certain legumes that can combine a starch or protein. So lentils, chickpeas, beans. So let’s say you are gonna have a bunch of beans, it’s better to eat the beans with brown rice and a salad and some squash or some zucchini versus a bunch of lentils with a bunch of chicken and rice, right? That’s a more dense meal. So we take the denser food, an easier way to think of it is taking the denser food, whether it’s the chickpeas or the fish or the chicken or the tofu or the beans and eating them with veggies. You can combine rice and beans because they all the, the, those mix lentils and beans as in kitcheree, but a bunch of heavier foods at once is gonna be more dense. So you can have those foods but pair them with veggies, as in my examples.
20:27 So I wanna pause there because that’s a lot and those are the main things you need to focus on. Just simplify in general, if you keep that principle in mind when you’re making meals, cooking at home, going to a salad bar, ordering at a restaurant that will serve you
20:46 Enormously, just try to simplify. Veggies are always neutral. You could order at a restaurant, salad, veggies, your main dish, whatever it is. Okay? So simplify number one. Number two, hydrate as much as possible in between meals. Number three, eat fruit on an empty stomach or with green veggies. And then the G S and number four, try to pair the protein, the starches with veggies instead of having a bunch of dense foods in one meal. So there you have it, this is going to open up energy in your body, make digestion more efficient for you. So again, that energy just flows into overall more vitality, better skin, more clarity, more focus, less bloat all around.
