A longitudinal study by Van Dyke and Drinkwater (2014) in the Public Health Nutrition Journal explored the relationship between intuitive eating and various health and psychological outcomes among college women. The findings suggested that intuitive eating was associated with lower body mass index (BMI), improved psychological well-being, and decreased disordered eating behaviors.
A randomized controlled trial conducted by Bacon and Aphramor in the Nutrition Journal (2011) examined the effectiveness of an intuitive eating intervention in promoting healthy behaviors and improving metabolic outcomes among obese women. The intervention group showed significant improvements in self-esteem, body image, and disordered eating behaviors compared to the control group.
The relationship between mindfulness and intuitive eating has been explored in various studies. A study by Mantzios and Wilson cited by the American Psychological Association (2015) investigated the role of mindfulness in intuitive eating practices among adults. The findings suggested that mindfulness was positively associated with intuitive eating behaviors and may contribute to healthier eating habits.
A study in the Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics (2014) found that participants who adopted intuitive eating practices experienced improvements in psychological well-being, including reduced depression and anxiety levels, compared to those who continued traditional dieting behaviors.
A study in the Journal of Counseling Psychology (2006) demonstrated that intuitive eating was inversely associated with disordered eating behaviors, suggesting that embracing intuitive eating may help reduce symptoms of eating disorders.

Namaste loves welcome back to our Thursday Q&A show where our topic today is the art of intuitive eating, how to listen to your body for nutritional guidance. So this is such an important topic, a vital one for our health. And when I say health, I mean on all levels, our physical health, our ability to stay in our peak vitality, our optimized vitality and to ward off illness, disease, aches, pains.
It’s also critical for our emotional wellbeing, our moods. And as all the yogis have always taught about diet, how we eat, being able to intuit what is the best thing for our body is a critical part to feeling in flow with our highest divine nature. If we are feeling stagnant, if we are feeling heavy or gassy or bloated, it is very hard to meditate. It is very hard to connect.
to our hearts and to the true self energy inside of us. So intuitive eating and intuition in general is one of the most important skills that we can learn. Today I’m gonna be sharing some research with you as always and some practical tips for you, how you can really hone your own intuition. I will also say that intuition comes of the heart, comes from coming into this deeper place inside of us.
We have two other brains, our heart and the one in our gut. And when we learn to tap into these, we are given answers for the questions that we haven’t even asked yet and for the ones that we will ask. And this is a huge topic that I’m very passionate about. So please stay tuned because on September 17th, my next adult book, which will be out, which is about the science and spirituality of opening the heart.
through five stages. And so I’ll be talking about this in much more detail soon. We also have a kids book coming out in May, which is starting to teach kids and families, your little ones, as well as yourself, how to tap in to this, how to get out of the linear mind. When it comes to food, as we’re talking about today, I’ve seen this time and time again for many years with my clients, how we eat is an extension of how we’re viewing life, right?
Kimberly Snyder (02:24.97)
So if we have a lot of fear, we tend to try to control things to feel safe. And for many people controlling, and I know this because I was in that mindset, controlling means I control how many calories I eat, feel safe. If I can plan my meals exactly and know how many grams of carbs I’m eating, how, you know, if this is a safe food or this is a safe plan, otherwise I may gain weight, I feel out of control. I don’t trust myself. I don’t know what I’m doing.
Control is a mechanism of the ego. Control makes us feel safe, but it is a false sense of security because it keeps us small. And as it relates here, it means that we grip, we stay small in terms of our dietary plans, the range of foods we’re eating, we’re not in tune with our bodies, right? It’s this very masculine and controlling way of
being that can make us feel constricted and rigid. And so it’s not something that we want to live by, especially if you’re here in our community, right? We are attracting a community very much including you that is wanting to expand. And so intuitive eating is going to help free you and expand your energy. Little reminder that we have
this before I keep going. I’m already going deeper in, but remember you can watch me here. We could be together, look at each other’s faces on YouTube. The podcast is now on video, or you can continue to listen on your walks through a kitchen while you’re cooking or cleaning the dishes or whatever you’re doing on Apple, Spotify and beyond. But I wanted to give you that option. And remember that our show notes, mysaloon.com, we will have resources and other podcasts that will very much support you in this topic.
So let’s pause for a moment and go to the question that spurred this amazing conversation, which comes from Bev and she lives in Nevada. Thank you, Bev, for bringing this top of mind. You write, I have heard about intuitive eating. However, I’m clueless about what this is all about. Can you share your experience and tips on how to ease into this practice? As I mentioned, thank you so much, Bev. So yes, I will. And I will say that how we eat, how we do one thing has an impact on everything else.
Kimberly Snyder (04:52.366)
So the great news here is as we start to trust our own intuition more, we start to trust our body’s cues and messages and our own intuition about how to best nourish and care for ourselves, that intuition can then expand into other areas in our lives. The most harmonious and effective thing to say in a Zoom meeting, right, from your intuition, or how you can best…
guide your child or your teenager, which may be going through a difficult moment, or which date to go on or second date to go on, or which career choice to make or which program to take. Even if your friends are all taking this acting class, but you feel called to a different one or you’re transitioning into something else, your intuition is your superpower. And so from a energetic…
dietary nutrition standpoint, it is essential that we start to tune in, in a very different way than what society tells us, which is follow these diets. This is the way, whether that’s keto or paleo or, you know, the carnivore diet or FODMAP or 80-20 or Whole30 or all these diets out there, right?
we can start to intuit what is the best thing for our body. And even if you happen to be plant-based as I am, or largely plant-based, right? We don’t have to be so rigid in these categories. Within that, what specific foods are the right ones for me? So there was a longitudinal study in the Public Health Nutrition Journal, and it found that…
there was a relationship in more intuitive eating in women. And this was, they were studying college-aged women. And when these women got away from dieting and ate in a more intuitive way, they didn’t have the same amount of eating disorders or disordered eating. They had an improvement in psychological wellbeing, and they actually had a lower body mass index. So I can say for myself that when I dieted,
Kimberly Snyder (07:15.246)
I was obsessed and I wasn’t skinnier. It wasn’t working. And this is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about this work. I’m so passionate about sharing about wellness because it can be easeful. When we are in flow, think about a river flowing down, right, there’s this easefulness. When we try to dam the river or we’re shifting the river, there’s a resistance and we’re kind of working against the natural current.
And I believe we are not naturally meant to eat in a rigid way or try to control our lifestyle. This is playing safe in any way. If we stay in safe relationships, which I’ve also done, a way to control, I’ll be the one that does the abandoning or the leaving. Because of my abandonment wound, it feels unsafe to be in this full love. Although that was blasted out the window when I met my hubby because the love was so powerful, I couldn’t control it. So I had to face some of these.
control issues. And I know from holding our saloon a circle, control is something that comes up for many of us. But when we can start to trust, if we can go down into our body and just start to pause before we eat, before we go grocery shopping, before we prepare a meal, even before we order at a restaurant, we take that sacred pause and we take some deep breaths down into our heart gut. Right?
heart and gut or one unit. This is a practice that with a lot more science I’ll share about it and intuition in the new book. You can ask the question down to your gut. Wait for the pause. I mean, wait for the answer to come up instead of just going from a linear place. Wait for a message. It’s the best thing for me to eat right now. It doesn’t have to be this big process. Just see, I’m really called to the soup. You know, I was planning on ordering that salad right now, but…
those roasted veggies and the soup feel right to me. Or your friend could say, oh my gosh, you have to try this zucchini linguine, it’s amazing. And then you sit and you look at the menu and then there’s something inside of you that says, hmm, I think that I really need that curry that’s stew and the brown rice, right? So we wanna have space for these messages to come up and not be drowned out.
Kimberly Snyder (09:37.654)
by the mind, the ego, the thoughts can be very loud. Same way the thoughts can be very loud around self-doubt. You’re not good enough. Can’t trust yourself. So when you doubt yourself, it means you will trust other people’s very specific ideas about what to eat. Oh, I saw on the morning news today that such and such is following this diet. So
Maybe she knows more and that’s exactly what I should do. It doesn’t mean that we don’t take in information. I do a lot of morning shows myself, but my tips are more around intuitive practices. Like hydration is important for all of us across the board. Vegetables are great. Having the glowing green smoothie, in my opinion, is a wonderful practice. But the times in which we eat and the other specific foods that we eat and what we put in our smoothies.
can differentiate. And this is so important. And now, a randomized controlled trial conducted by Bacon and Aframore in the Nutrition Journal from 2011 found that an intuitive eating intervention helped to improve metabolic outcomes in obese women. This intervention group showed significant improvements in self-esteem, body image, disordered eating behaviors.
and actual metabolic outcomes, meaning better metabolism, better weight compared to the control group. So we hear this many, many times, dieting doesn’t work. Dieting is this multi-billion dollar industry. Since the time of how many decades it’s been going on, the different iterations of Weight Watchers and many others that have happened. But yet we still slip into that.
feeling that we need to diet in order to have the right body, to have the right weight. And I remember, I can recall it in my body, the pain, the suffering, having eating disorders, beating myself up, being so angry with myself that I overate, making myself throw up into a pot in the back of the bedroom, the shave. And then feeling this liberation.
Kimberly Snyder (12:00.286)
Now it’s very easy. My diet is very easy. Yes, there will be this transition for you to move into intuitive eating, but it starts with the regularity. It starts with taking pauses and training yourself. So another aspect of this is starting the day in a place that is open and connected, AKA meditation.
There is no coincidence that my segue into intuitive eating coincided, so to speak, or at least was parallel to the time, interconnected with the time, when I was very much into getting into my meditation practice. And I was opening myself up to this connection to the true self, to the heart, to this abundant fullness. When we are feeling full and abundant,
We’re not making food choices from a lack-based place. We’re not saying, I’m so scared of eating the carbs, so I have to eat this food, I’m not good enough, I’m still too fat. All of these are lack-based thoughts. Instead, when we come from this wholeness, it starts to shift into, how can I further support this amazing vitality inside of me? How can I support myself? How can I support my energy? Because I’m amazing, one of a kind, I deserve this.
And so we’re not so scared of eating the treats. Sometimes, you know, I love chocolate and I, this week was one of my son’s birthdays, I eat a lot of birthday cake, but without guilt and feeling, you know, great. And the rest of my diet was quite balanced. I still had a lot of my GGS and so on, right? So we don’t have this fear, we don’t have this grip, and we don’t have this clamping down on our GI tracts because when we’re stressed and cortisol,
We don’t digest well, I don’t care how little you’re eating. So I’ll review all this at the end. So far what we’ve talked about is taking those sacred pauses before you eat and waiting for some kind of answer. And it gets easier over time to listen to the answer, which may come up as a deep knowing, it may be auditory, it may be a visualization. We all have messages come in different ways, but we wanna pause and we wanna wait for the space for it to come up. Number two, we want to…
Kimberly Snyder (14:25.462)
We want to feel free. And we do that in a practical way by meditating in the morning. This puts us in the space out of the grips of control and out of societal ideas. And so we meditate, we breathe down into our belly and into our heart. Again, we have these amazing practical enlightenment meditations for you on the website. The Heart Aligned meditations are coming soon. So you breathe and then you feel the spaciousness, which last week we were giving
information and research about by meditating in the morning, the participants in the study had less stress. They were more resilient to stress throughout the whole day. So how amazing is that? More in our bodies, we’re less in that control, fear, lack-based place. And this will also support intuitive eating.
So another study, this is an American Psychological Association from journal from 2015, found that mindfulness and intuitive eating practices were associated with healthier eating habits. Pretty obvious, but I love that it’s being studied here. We’re talking about healthier habits, meaning not feeling like it’s such a chore to eat the vegetables or to eat regular meal sizes,
Binging and then, you know, fasting because we feel guilty and this constant back and forth, this is not eating healthy. These erratic dietary patterns are really great for our body. Of course, you know, practicing a form of intermittent fasting can be really helpful, like we do naturally in our community here because we’re not eating super heavy, fatty.
protein-filled breakfast right away. We’re having the glowing green smoothie, going on cleanses like our waterfall cleanse, our holistic cleanse can be very helpful, especially as we’re coming into spring and summer. But I’m talking about day to day, week to week. I ate so much at dinner, so I’m going to starve myself tomorrow. I had this huge binge weekend, so I’m going to starve myself for a few days. This is not natural cycles of eating. More and more we want to move towards this consistency.
Kimberly Snyder (16:39.562)
And again, tuning into yourself and your intuition is going to help that rise up.
The Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2014 found that those who adopted more intuitive eating and moved away from diets were measured to have reduced depression and anxiety levels compared to those who continued traditional dieting behaviors. Everything is interconnected. This is one of the reasons that we so passionately talk about our four cornerstones, food, body, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth.
Dietary habits are connected to your emotional wellbeing. If you can connect more to your true self meditation, it will impact your body, it will impact your skin, it will impact your dietary protocols. Everything is interrelated. So we can work on all different levels. As we work to find more resilience, and there’s a lot of tools, I will say in my new heart book around
emotional intelligence, emotional wellbeing. Naturally, we become less controlling and more healthy in our food choices. And the other way around, as we start to get in more healthier rhythms around our food choices, we then can support healthier moods and emotions and move away from emotional swings. So everything works together. And once again, this is one of the reasons that all the great yogis taught so much about food.
Because while food is not the end all be all, food is an energetic blueprint. What we’re taking into our bodies affects our energy and our vitality. It affects how dense we feel or how light we feel. So our foods can affect our meditations. And again, the other way around, the more we meditate, the more stable within ourselves we feel so that it will be easier for us to eat in a more regulated, healthy manner.
Kimberly Snyder (18:44.718)
So everything is so interrelated. And I love how this particular study from this journal of nutrition and dietetics pointed it out. When we’re eating more intuitively, we have less depression and anxiety. Emotions and food are interconnected. And then finally, the last piece of research I wanna call out is from the Journal of Counseling Psychology from 2016. And it found that intuitive eating was inversely associated with disordered eating behaviors.
suggesting that embracing intuitive eating helps to reduce the symptoms of eating disorders. So as someone who has suffered from eating disorders myself, the root of that is disconnection. I am disconnected from life. I cannot digest these big feelings and big emotions in life. So I’m stuffing myself with food and then I’m throwing it up. I cannot digest.
In contrast, when we are living in connection, connection with ourselves first, in the true self, then you feel more connected to the world. Then you feel more connected to other people. Then you feel more connected to inspired action, moving up and out of you, how I eat, how I live, the relationships, everything comes up and out versus being stuffed in these ideas.
these fad diets, these ways of practicing our living life, which aren’t in alignment with who we really are. So it’s so important that we come into more connection with the body and our true self. And I can’t stress enough how this will benefit your very practical material goals, material meaning what we see.
abundance, opportunities, because you give off a different vibration, as well as yes, your BMI, your body weight, your level of fitness, how you look in the mirror, the quality of your hair and your skin, all of it affects everything else. So not just saying, oh, this feels good and nice, and you’re not going to be as stressed about what you eat. Those things, yes, but also, you will experience more flow in your body and therefore a much easier time maintaining the weight that you want.
Kimberly Snyder (21:09.762)
without all the control. Control doesn’t work. It doesn’t work in relationships, relationships with your partner, with your spouse, with your children. And it does not work in your relationship with food. This gripping is gripping the muscles in your body. Oh, even doing that, my shoulders hurt. It’s gripping down in your GI tract. It’s constricting. Just think about openness as flow. So intuition comes from an open space.
Here’s some of my tips for eating, approaching mindful eating. We need to get out of the mind and we need to get into the body. So the more and more you can get into bodily practices and practice breathing and being connected to your body on a regular basis. So what does this mean? This means that when you’re walking around, instead of being somewhere else and always being on the phone, sometimes we’d like to walk and get things done.
or to communicate, but sometimes just feel your body moving. Breathe down into your belly, look around at the world, find yourself in nature. When you’re doing yoga, same thing, take those deep breaths, connect to the body, or any other exercise, you’re running on a treadmill, start to feel this dynamic connection to your actual body. And then the second part is, as we mentioned earlier, you wanna actually start to tune in with the body’s messages.
So this means asking questions, taking those pauses before you order, before you put all the food on your plate at the buffet. Hmm, what am I being called to? Not from a mental place, but a deeper place, from the heart and the gut. What am I being drawn to? So this means that we pause and then we create space to listen. And this naturally leads to the third part, as I mentioned, which is to practice meditation.
This makes everything easier. This means we are practicing actively, going in and consistently into this place beyond thinking, into this place of the deepest connection. And this is the highest form of intuition. Paramahansa Yogananda teaches us that the highest form of intuition is to know that we are more than human. We have a body, we have a mind, but we are this eternal soul. We are this energy, this higher self.
Kimberly Snyder (23:33.742)
Whatever you want to call it, we are more. So when we tap into that intuition, we start to live our lives on this material plane in a very different way. We start to feel the energy of lightness and expansion and appreciation and more peace and less fear. And so then we start to make less fear-based choices. We start to…
feel more in tune, we start to embrace naturally what is natural and great and healthy for us. So the next part of this is giving yourself permission to not follow the rules, to listen to your body. Sometimes you are going to be quite hungry in the morning and your body’s going to be quite different when you’re pregnant and you aren’t going to follow these rigid rules of any sort of diet. I’ve always been
a, since my first book, The Beauty Detox Solution, there’s been this very, um, uh, strong element of intuitive eating because there’s a lot of leeway in that plan for saying, hey, eat the fiber, eat the vegetables, only plant foods and fruit have fiber, but mix and match, try these different, you know, there’s so many recipes here. That’s why it’s always been a little bit challenging for me to make these set recipe plans.
because I always say you may want something else than this, but these are some general ideas. These are general ideas for a recipe, but please by all means, mix and match the spices, mix and match the veggies, because this is how you start to really go into deep self-care. You start to intuit what your body really needs. I was so drawn to basil the other day, and I made pestos, and I was using, I made a tofu stir fry with basil.
And this is something I can explain in my linear mind, but there was something about basil that was helping me awaken and feel alive and fresh. It felt like spring energy. So basil and cilantro have been really a lot in my GGS and in my cooking. And it feels so good. The smells feel good. My body feels great. Moving beyond the thinking and analyzing, right? And so sometimes we may need things for nutritional reasons, but as I talked about in the Beauty Detox Power Foods,
Kimberly Snyder (25:57.934)
Sometimes it’s not nutritional gaps per se, but energetic ones. Sometimes we are called to this stew and the comforting soup when we’re going through a period of grief. Sometimes we can intuitively feel, we’re going through a moment of heart opening or spiritual awakening. We need more green, this vibration of green, of nature of the heart chakra, the Anahata chakra, to really support us. So if you’re interested in learning about the chakras and food,
and food cravings in general, the Beauty Detox Power Foods book would be very supportive to you. It talks about the sacral, the creative, emotional flow. We want to hide that water is the element there. You may be called to naturally want more watery fruit and more hydration, more smoothies during this time when you’re in a creative moment and so on and so forth.
So I don’t love the word mindful. Let me be honest, I’ve talked about this before. Mind, I don’t want to be full of the mind. What it really means, what I like to use more instead is awareness. So we want to be aware of where we are in our bodies at any particular time, but definitely when we’re thinking about eating. So this means that we can be more aware when we are not really hungry, but we
are trying to offload an uncomfortable feeling. Maybe it’s stress, maybe it’s anger or resentment or not feeling good enough. And so, there’s a certain constriction or feeling in the body and we may find ourselves going for those cookies or those chips.
we may, the more aware we are, we can start to feel that, besides tracking or measuring specific portion sizes, we start to create an awareness that, especially when we eat more slowly and we chew well, so we treat the food with love and intention, slowing down before meals, saying grace or gratitude.
Kimberly Snyder (28:00.214)
We can start to be more aware when we are actually full. So we start to notice these cues, especially from the actual food filling us up in the fiber. So there’s a wonderful book out now called The Power Foods Diet. If you tuned into my recent interview with Dr. Neal Bernard, we talked about how there are certain foods that allow your body to not, to more easily digest calories and to keep you full.
So some of those foods include melons and berries and legumes like lentils and beans and green vegetables. So you can check out his book for more information. Information’s good, like I said, but at the end of the day, when we’re eating these foods, how much we’re eating these foods, what we’re called to in a particular meal time should come from inside. It should come from our intuition, from our gut and our heart.
So we also want to be patient, loving, and compassionate with ourselves. Part of this moving away from gripping and control means that we don’t have to beat ourselves up. You know, sometimes we may want that beer. Sometimes we may, you know, if it’s a special moment, sometimes we want to eat the birthday cake, or sometimes we want to eat a bowl of pasta. And we’re not going to be perfect. Sometimes we are going to stress eat. Sometimes we are going to eat to manage our emotions. But that awareness is so powerful.
So how I broke my own eating disorders was this increased awareness and starting to just really understand what was going on in a way that no counselor could really impart to me. It really came from myself. I’m not saying that working with therapists and counselors, I did talk to someone for a time, isn’t a great idea because it can be enormously helpful. But what I mean is there’s a certain point where it clicked in to myself and my heart saying.
Oh, I don’t want to hurt myself this way. I felt so badly about myself and now I want to shift. And then I started to feel full and connected. And then that was the way that I started to shift how I ate. And it started with a few days and then we go a couple of weeks without binging and purging or starving myself. And then it just got more and more and more. But along the way, patience and self-compassion is an absolutely key part of this. And so.
Kimberly Snyder (30:27.01)
There’s some other points which we’ll add into the show notes, but the bigger part of this and the things that I really want you to understand around intuitive eating is that number one, like we talked about, being in touch with your true self is going to shift everything. Everything affects everything else. This is the key point of today’s show. The more you meditate, the more you can journal and be aware of your feelings, be aware of what’s happening in your body.
moving your body, exercising, breathing down, all these ways. The more that we can be more in touch with the wholeness, the more you will let go of fear and control across your life, including with food. Number two, we want to allow space for answers to come from within us. It’s a form of pratyahara, pulling the energy in, getting out of the senses. What am I seeing on TikTok? What are the fads that are being talked about on Access Hollywood Now, or whatever it is?
just listen to your own body. Third, taking in information is helpful because it will give you the confidence to say, Hey, I have information. I’m not lacking in anything here. Right. I read Kimberly’s books on nutrition as well as her book on the true self. You are more than you think you are. And I’m pretty confident. I understand about antioxidants and inflammation. I know what an anti-inflammatory diet is, which by the way, you can listen to my podcast on that with Dr. Uma Ndu of Harvard.
weeks ago, but take an information for sure. Keep listening to our show. But in those moments, what am I going to make for dinner? What am I going to serve for the brunch this weekend? What am I going to order in the restaurant? These are the moments where it turns back into you, into your heart and gut. This is where the individualization doesn’t have to just for healthcare and self-care.
doesn’t just mean all these fancy biohacking ways of getting your blood drawn every few weeks and having the telehealth person tell you what to do and all the supplements and all the food. That can be helpful, but far more powerful is being in tune with yourself. You are the highest guide to yourself. So information is important, but filter it through your heart and your gut. And maybe you try some
Kimberly Snyder (32:52.846)
protocols that have been given to you by someone else. For sure. I do client work all the time. I give suggestions, but you can say to yourself or to that practitioner, you know what, this part isn’t really working for me. Or I think I need more food in the middle of the day. Or I actually am so active. There’s such a long stretch. I do need something to eat in the middle of the afternoon. Or.
You know, I’ve been reading about this one diet that’s so high in protein, but I think I’m good. I don’t need so much more. I think I need more fiber right now instead. So take in the information so you feel confident as well as a way to support your natural choices. But I can’t emphasize enough. Last week we were talking about the morning routine. Creating a morning routine will help your intuitive eating and your intuition in general coming into your body. Having that hot water with lemon inside.
and meditating. So please check out the show notes and please practice some of this. But remember that the tuning in process will happen in listening to yourself will happen more and more easily and more consistently you practice. And remember not to be up so much in the mind. That’s where mindfulness can be a very misleading word. Be aware, aware of the messages, aware of what you’re feeling, aware of your emotions, aware when you’re full.
