To this day, whenever I smell a strong mint flavor, I think about my magical journey to Morocco a few years ago, where I drank mint tea along with the locals. But I skipped the ginormous amounts of sugar I saw the locals adding in.
I admit I was that person that carried around a dropper bottle of liquid stevia :) ). Whatever! it’s really about the mint! So having drank mint tea just last night, I was inspired me to come up with this new Mint Chip Smoothie Recipe.
If you like the burst of minty coolness, mixed with a nutty, spicy, earthy, fruity, and caramel taste of chocolate, you’re in for a real treat. You can enjoy this smoothie as an afternoon pick-me-up.
Since we have SO many amazing smoothie recipes besides this one, and because there is such a variety of nutrients in each one, be sure to switch up your afternoon smoothies to get the maximum benefits!
High Mineral-Containing Herb: Mint
Did you know this cool and subtle herb has several essential minerals, including magnesium, copper, iron, potassium, and calcium? I love that it grows so easily (it soldiers on even if you forget about it for a minute!) and is so good for us.
The magnesium and calcium it contains are both important minerals for bone health and beautiful, graceful movement. Mint provides 60 milligrams of magnesium and 200 milligrams of calcium in each 100 gram serving.
Phosphorus is also present in this herb, which is another mineral that maintains strong bones. Beautiful, strong bone structure is key for us showing up in the world with all our power!
Other benefits to incorporating mint into this smoothie!
Another reason mint should be a regular part of our beauty foods, is that it promotes digestion. This is key, for I am all about cleansing our guts and aiding digestion with everything we put into our bodies.
Mint also soothes our guts of indigestion or inflammation. Sipping on a cup of mint tea can bring relief to your gut, and is far better than reaching for those over-the-counter products.
Mint tea is also a great post-dinner /evening beverage to sip on to help promote better digestion!
Mint is also packed with vitamins, antioxidants and phytonutrients (including vitamin A, beta-carotene, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), riboflavin and thiamin).
Mint adds herbaceous freshness to our fresh fruits, salads, and smoothies, like this one we’re creating today. Let’s remember how nature provides us with a medley of resources to heal naturally and keep ourselves at our best.
Never stop exploring these natural remedies and always stay connected to nature!
Vegan (Non-dairy) Chocolate Chips
When we think of chocolate, there seems to be the ongoing discussion of it being related to food cravings. Theory tends to claim that food cravings stem from a nutritional deficiency in our bodies – but that isn’t really the whole story.
So what’s the real scoop? I go into this topic in greater length in my Beauty Detox Power book.
Bottom line is, if you are eating the well-balanced Beauty Detox way, your cravings will most likely stem more from emotional and mental needs, than any other.
Which brings me to confessing that I am a lifelong chocoholic (is that the right way to spell it?!). I gave up chocolate for a whopping 3 months, from the end of November to the beginning of March, but it has started to creep back into my life.
And you know what? I’m okay with it. I wasn’t trying to cut it out for weight loss or anything. I cut it out for a time because it was part of my protocol for giving up any kind of stimulant.
This includes all caffeine, theobromine and even onions and garlic, as a result of this super intense neurofeedback training program I did.
Being more in tune with your cravings
With that being said, I am more in tune with why I might be craving a bit of chocolate and can add some (in moderation), to my Beauty Detox recipes from time to time. After all, what would life be without the occasional yummy treat?
While we may not view smoothies as a dessert, we can treat them as such, when it comes to adding some good ole chocolate chips into the mix. Having easily digestible desserts are important so we stay on track, are satisfied, and don’t feel deprived.
Vegan chocolate chips are pretty delish! Sure they contain sugar, but at least they don’t contain congestive dairy of any kind. Look for a high dark chocolate content and you will be psyched, and not miss the dairy at all.
With this recipe, you can indulge in a bit of chocolate while simultaneously fostering more appreciation and love for yourself. How?
By including some super-nourishing greens with mint and spinach! Let’s get to it!
I am so thankful for my Moroccan memories and getting to share them with you through creating this recipe. :)
It’s time to check out this new recipe….
- 1 organic peppermint tea bag, steeped in ½ cup boiling water, then cooled
- ½ cup hemp milk
- 1 cup spinach
- Handful of fresh mint (See Note)
- 1 ripe banana (frozen optional)
- 3 tablespoons non-dairy chocolate chips, divided (you can find vegan chocolate chips in most stores)
- Add the peppermint tea, hemp milk, spinach, mint leaves, banana and half the chocolate chips to the blender.
- Starting the blender on a low speed, blend until smooth. If needed gradually increase to higher speeds and blend until smooth.
- Top with remaining chocolate chips and enjoy!
