And this is just a really great time, I think, to spend time together and to talk about these big topics, especially the one today about interconnectedness and how things that we think are separate really aren’t. So for instance, the way that we exercise, the way we move our body effects our mood and effects our energy and the way that we take care of our gut health and the way our GI tract is functioning is going to also effect our mood and it’s going to effect our skin and our diet is also going to effect our sleep. So on and so forth.

Kimberly: And, on the line waiting patiently, we have our amazing Katelyn who has gathered the questions for us today and she is tuning in all the way from New York. We’re on opposite coast. I’m in LA. Kay, I bet it’s a lot colder for you right now. How are you doing out there?
Katelyn: I’m doing well. I love this time of year, even though it’s cold and my seasonal affective disorder kicks up with it getting dark at 4:30. I am taking in all of the holiday festivities and enjoying that Christmas is only a few weeks away and the new year. I’m definitely ready for 2020. I’m over 2019. Ready for the new year to start, new beginnings. I’m getting married next year, so I’m excited for that. But, yeah, it’s a good time to talk about this topic because a lot of times people really neglect their health during this time, this busy time between all of the holidays and the new year. So, I think we can dive in. We had some really interesting questions come in from the community, so everybody’s interested to see what you have to say about it.
Kimberly: All right, love. Let’s hear the first one, please then.

How can I stay in my positivity when I have to feel her negative energy every single day?
Katelyn: Yes, let’s do this. So we have Jennifer living in Fort Collins, Colorado: “I’m working on the four cornerstones of true beauty as well as doing daily meditation and I’m finding some peace in my life. However, my coworker is constantly having mood swings and being passive aggressive towards me. If I could, I’d remove her from my life, but she sits directly next to me at work. How can I stay in my positivity when I have to feel her negative energy every single day?”
Kimberly: Jennifer, thank you so much for your question, beauty. Sending you a big hug out there in Colorado. And, this is a great question. I think that we’ve all been touched by people that trigger us, challenge us, hit our buttons. And it’s funny because years ago when I was teaching yoga in New York City actually, I had this Buddhist student and she would sometimes volunteer… very sweet, like once a year she would do acupuncture on me. She was Buddhist, she was an acupuncturist and she talked about this idea that everything is a blessing in the form of a lesson. And I remember this is like years ago and I was still sort of at the beginning of my yoga journey and learning all this stuff and I’m still learning of course, but the concept was like, “Ugh, it’s so annoying. I don’t know what you mean. When people are annoying, they’re just annoying.”
Kimberly: But, now over time, and I have definitely had my share, Jennifer, very challenging people in my life, including in-laws and relatives and other people that have come through. I realize now that these challenges can be a blessing in the sense that it allows us to kind of go deeper, deeper into our own strength, deeper below the surface, deeper into ourselves where we can really affirm that we are in control of our internal state. And, these challenges, these people that come up, they can bring up mirrors, they can show parts of ourselves that maybe we do need to work on, parts that we need to let go of, parts that we need to find more peace with. And as annoying as that may sound, because I remember feeling very annoyed the first time I heard it, I feel that these people that are coming as blessings do increase our strength.
Kimberly: And, I know for myself, some of the people that used to bug me so much, I just have gotten to the point where I’ve let go of a lot of the wanting to feel validated or understood by them. All the things that I could introspect and see was at the root of why do I focus so much on this person? Why do they annoy me so much? And just like David Hawkins says, the psychologist, he says, “Let go of the feeling behind the question,” which is a really interesting thing. Instead of seeking the question, so your question is, how do I stay positive when I have to feel her negative energy? The feeling behind that question is probably annoyance and resistance and struggle and oh, this person is there.
Kimberly: So, if you try to let go of that, and again, I know it’s not easy, but if you just say, “Okay, she’s going to be there. I’m not going to let her affect my peace. I’m not going to send her bad vibes because that’ll probably just amplify the situation. We know what we put out, we get back. I’m actually just going to try to be neutral with her, or even loving and kind and cordial in my interactions,” and the less resistance we put up, things start to bother us less and less and less. And again, this is something I’ve just experienced firsthand in my own life. Believe me, I used to obsess about comments that people would make, or like, “Oh my God, they don’t get it. They don’t see it this way, or this way,” but I really have had… it’s very challenging for me to let go of feelings. I’m someone that fixates. I’m a perfectionist. I run things over in my head, but it’s a beautiful practice that gets stronger and stronger like a muscle when we focus on it.
Kimberly: So I would encourage you, Jennifer, again, to try to let go of the feelings behind the question and to just… I’m glad you’re meditating. Just try to take some deep breaths, shift your focus. Maybe put some ear phones in and listen to relaxing music, or just if she’s being passive aggressive, just imagine that there is just this beautiful white bubble around you and her energy just pouncing back off to herself. Nothing can affect you, nothing can take your internal peace away.
Katelyn: I think it’s such a great topic to kick off this show with because so many people, we go to work, we spend so much time there, and with our family or friends, to have these tools because we are going to butt heads with people and not feel great all the time with the interactions we have. And to have that kind of toolkit to help us navigate the feelings, I think is really important. And we have a really great four cornerstones document that I believe Jennifer is referencing when she said she’s working on her four cornerstones of true beauty. Kimberly: Thank you so much, Kay. Yeah, I think it’s a really powerful tool and it gives us the lens of looking at our life and constantly introspecting about where we need to give a little bit more care and more attention to get rebalanced. As we all… we’re going through life and there’s ups and downs every day and it’s a really powerful way to just keep fueling yourself and these small, simple steps that you can get to get back on track will help you feel your best all the time.
Katelyn: 100% and it’s a good lesson, especially during the holiday season into the new year. Giving love, even if you’re not feeling like you’re getting it back. I’ve always found that when somebody is being either mean or aggressive towards you, when you’re calm and loving, it gets to a point where they can no longer act that way and you do start to see a shift. So I think that’s great advice with the resistance and just kind of… there is some acceptance there that does help those situations with family and friends. I think that’s a positive reminder for all the community to pay attention to during this time of year.
Kimberly: Yeah, and there’s this saying that I like a lot too, which is what you resist persists. And, it’s really true when someone bugs you and you kind of resist it and you focus on it and you give it your energy and your attention, it sort of does keep going, but when you drop it and you just don’t create that energetic match anymore, you just get to a level of indifference and then eventually, out of neutrality, acceptance and even love, right? And just, “I’m going to love you. I’m going to send you good vibes. Maybe we’re not going to be best friends, but I don’t have any bad vibes towards you.” It really helps to alleviate the situation. I’ve seen this time and time again in my own life and if you just let it go, drop that energy, things start to work out a lot better.
Question 2: What is your preference on sweeteners and why? And is it safe to eat Stevia every day? Katelyn: Beautiful. Okay, so we have another question from Lynette from Mobile, Alabama. And she’s asking, “What is your preference on sweeteners and why? And is it safe to eat Stevia every day? I started using coconut nectar and honey and my skin wasn’t glowing anymore, so I went back to mainly using Stevia and only a tiny amount of coconut nectar or honey. Do you have any idea why this may be happening?”
Kimberly: Lynette, thank you so much for your question. And, I want to address this by saying that I really don’t think that there’s one little, micro thing that contributes to our overall health. I don’t think there’s one little, micro thing that contributes to glowing skin. I think glowing skin is a… back to our four cornerstone philosophy, it’s a product of eating nourishing foods, taking care of our body, whether through exercise and walking and proper sleep and proper skincare. Emotionally, we were talking about Jennifer’s question, if we can get to the place of more neutrality and feeling just more even-keeled during the day, that in turn does effect inflammation in our body and bloating and hormones and all sorts of things. And it does very much effect our skin. And spiritually, for sure, the more peaceful we are, the more relaxed our nervous system is, the least quickly we age and the better our skin is going to look as well. And we will just have that natural glow of peace and joy from meditation.
Kimberly: So, I will say, Lynette, I use a variety of sweeteners. I don’t think there’s like, again, one food that’s perfect for everyone, or one sweetener. My go-to is… right now, raw honey. I do love it. I know some… there’s some sorts of vegans that won’t have any bee products and I don’t fall into that category, especially knowing your beekeeper. And I have a local one that’s ethically sourced and treats the bees well. I’m a big believer in bee products and I think it’s the nature of the bee to work. So I love bee pollen. I love raw honey. I do love coconut nectar. I used to use Stevia more, but I just don’t love the taste as much now. Different brands taste different, but I kind of burned out on it myself.
Kimberly: I would say, as far as eating it every single day, I think it’s always good to rotate sweeteners and I don’t think you want to have any sweetener in super large amounts anyway. You really want to mix things up. If you’re having a smoothie, you could just sweeten it with banana for instance. There’s also other sweeteners like monk fruit that you may want to look into, but again, I really, personally doubt that it’s just the sweetener that’s effecting your skin glow. I would look to making sure you’re taking care of your gut health. If there’s anything going on, especially this time of year, maybe you’re eating a little heavier, maybe there’s a little shift in your diet, or making sure you’re taking your SBO probiotics, or just seeing what’s going on emotionally, stress-wise. There could be a lot of things effecting your skin. So Lynette, I would encourage you to take a macro view of your lifestyle right now and just see what else it could be along with the different sweetener choices potentially.
Katelyn: I think that’s a great point to bring up. A lot of people write in with questions and they feel it’s like very specific that it’s this one thing and a lot of times we need that reminder that, very… seldomly, it’s going to just be one thing, unless you’re physically applying it on your skin and it’s causing a breakout or something, but when it comes to your nutrition and what you’re digesting and things like that, I think it’s great to point out just having that overall view and then bringing it back to the four cornerstones. A lot of people are not in the habit of really assessing their emotional and spiritual well-being, which is why we want to talk about it so much because it is such a big part and a reminder for people to tap into that beyond their food and body.
Katelyn: Yes. Big reminder for today’s show. Okay, beauties. Well, we’re halfway through here, so Kimberly and I are going to take a short break and then she’ll be back to answer the last two questions.
Kimberly: All right, beauties, we are back from our short little break and we have two more questions for you guys on the topic of how your health effects everything else, which sort of sounds like a big blanket statement, Kay, but again, back in the realm of quantum physics and this idea that everything is the field. Everything is interconnected. There’s no beginning and no end to the wave. And this is a concept that’s been echoed in Ayurvedic medicine, as is the micro, as is the macro. So I really don’t think it is an exaggeration to say everything does effect everything else. Everything counts. If you snap at your coworker or someone and you feel a contraction in your body, you don’t feel good about it, that’s going to effect your digestion, which is going to effect your sleep potentially and your skin and your nutrient uptake and everything.
Kimberly: So, it doesn’t mean to freak out, or anything like that because no one’s going to be perfect. But I think it’s a powerful perspective to just be aware of the impact that everything has. The more aware we are, the more consciously we live and the more consciously we make decisions and then we can start to make improvements and start to feel better and look our best. So it’s very, very powerful to adopt this mindset, which is very expansive and again, just has a lot of… there’s a lot of power that we take back when we see things from this perspective.
Question 3: I have always had decent eyesight, but since turning 30, I’ve seen a downward progression in my eyesight. Are there any foods or vitamins that will help my eyesight that you would recommend for my health?
Katelyn: Yeah, I couldn’t agree more. And I think it’s so great to take these very specific questions and they really can apply in such a bigger way to people’s lives. So, that’s why we like to pick certain questions for you guys and then we like to have a little conversation around it. So, we will see what Sarah from Fort Worth, Texas, is asking. She’s written in, “I have always had decent eyesight, but since turning 30, I’ve seen a downward progression in my eyesight. Are there any foods or vitamins that will help my eyesight that you would recommend for my health?”
Kimberly: So, same thing here, Sarah. Thank you so much for your question. Let’s start with the more specific recommendations and then we can expand to some more macro concepts. So the first thing with eye health of course is that there are some nutrients that are really important to boost your eye health. The first that comes to mind is omega-3 fatty acids. And this is something that we can get from a variety of sources like taking a DHA-EPA supplement, chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, lots of different greens. And, these sources that have these omega-3s are going to be very beneficial to eye tissue as well as your brain and your heart health and your skin health. So you want to make sure that you’re consuming them regularly. I am an advocate for taking a DHA-EPA-algae-based supplement rather than a fish pill, or fish oil supplement, which is the source, the algae is the source of the DHA and the EPA for the fish.
Kimberly: So you’re going to the primary source and it can just be good insurance to take it every day, or when you feel like you’re getting off track and especially if you’re concerned about your eye health. That’s something I definitely recommend. Now, another nutrient that could be really great for improving your eye health is vitamin E and this comes from a lot of different foods, seeds and nuts, in particular. Almond milk. Almonds are a really great source. Walnuts. So you want to maybe this winter, especially as our skin starts to get dry, maybe throw some nuts on your salad, on your kale salad. Just have a handful to snack on and that’s a really great food for your eyes as well. And, some of the foods, the flax seeds and the chia seeds that I mentioned for a omega-3 fats also have vitamin E, which is great.
Kimberly: And then continuing more nutrients. Vitamin C is always an amazing, powerful antioxidant. And, we get vitamin C here in our beauty detox Soluna plan from our lemon water, from our glowing green smoothie. All the different smoothie recipes we have on the website. We have some great ones with oranges for instance, which is personally a fruit I… me and Bobby are both obsessed with right now. We’re eating multiple oranges a day here in the house. We just love them. So, all that vitamin C is going to be really healthy and regenerative in your body, including for your eyes. And then vitamin A is the next nutrient I want to talk about. This comes of course from beta carotene, which converts to vitamin A in the body and this is where you always hear carrots are great for your eyes, but I would say beyond carrots of course, sweet potatoes and all these beautiful orange foods, squash, kabocha squash, all the different… papaya, orange foods in particular have that vitamin A, which is really great in helping your body improve vision.
Kimberly: And so there is research about beta carotene for vision and in improving your eyesight. So you definitely want to include some of that. Now, those are some of the micro nutrients as I mentioned. From a macro standpoint, Sarah, I would say that we want to make sure that we are increasing the circulation of our body and making sure it’s [optimal 00:22:11]. There’s little capillaries, tiny little blood vessels that feed our eyes and nourish our eyes. And if they start to get blocked from inflammatory foods, congestive foods like cooked vegetable oil, too much sugar, too many animal products, meat and dairy, then that also can effect the health of our eyes. So I would encourage you to be plant-based, or at least as plant-based as possible, to drink nut milks and dairy-free alternatives, to try different alternatives like Myoko’s, Kitehill, these amazing cheese brands that are vegan and plant-based.
Kimberly: Just to open up your body overall and the circulation is going to be fantastic for everything. Eyesight, hair health, all sorts of things happen when we have really proper circulation in the body. And then I would also say hydration is important. Just like every… all the organs, all the tissues of the body function better when we have wonderful… wonderfully hydrated cells. So just make sure, especially this time of year, it tends to be very dry. So you want to make sure that you’re just drinking a lot. And even incorporating coconut water this time of year. We definitely drink coconut water here in my house year round to stay hydrated. So I think that’s also really important.
Kimberly: And I would also say, this is to the energetic-spiritual realm. There’s all these books about… including Louise Hay’s book, You Can Heal Your Life, where she talks about ailments in the body and she relates them to a spiritual root. And with eyesight, your eyes… I don’t have the book in front of me, or the list, but I do believe it’s something like, is there something in your life right now that you don’t want to see? Is there something that is coming up for you? It could be work, it could be with your family, it could be at home, it could be whatever.
Kimberly: So I would just sit with, is there anything that you’re shying away from facing, or seeing right now. And, just sit with that idea that may or may not apply to you, but again, from the spiritual perspective where we do believe everything is related, we do believe everything has a spiritual and emotional root, that might be a good practice for you to sit with and see… no pun intended, if there’s anything that you’re somehow on a very, very deep level, subconsciously even maybe perhaps blocking your own vision because you have fear or anger or sadness or resentment, whatever it is, something in your life that you don’t want to see. So, that’s something I definitely would encourage you to do as well, Sarah.
Katelyn: I think this is a great segment for people that maybe came into the podcast, they don’t know about the books that you’ve written because when you were talking, I was thinking about The Beauty Detox Solution, your first book and how that really effected my health and how health effects everything else. And when you were talking, I was thinking about when you’re following the Soluna lifestyle, it really blankets so many areas where it doesn’t have to be so fixated on one thing. We talked about eye health and sugars and things like that earlier in the show, but when you follow our whole lifestyle and philosophy, it really covers so many areas of your health that you don’t necessarily… I know for me, I don’t worry about too much because I know I’m getting everything I need because I’m following our program. So I just wanted to bring that up for people.
Katelyn: If you’re not aware of The Beauty Detox Solution, Kimberly’s first book, it really lays out if you want to start from a food perspective, which is where this question was going, that could really help you build a foundation where you don’t have to worry about certain areas of your health and fixate. You can really know you’re getting all your nutrients and everything your body needs from a starting point, especially if you’re looking to go plant-based and you are still currently eating meat, it really has a roadmap there for you to feel good about making these transitions.
Kimberly: Kay, it’s so funny. Thank you for all that, Kay. And it’s so funny because when you started to talk, I thought you were going to talk about Beauty Detox Power, which… Beauty Detox Solution is related in that way, but it just shows how overlapping everything is because it reminded me about Beauty Detox Power, which is the third book where I talk about the chakras and I hadn’t even thought about this until you said that, but this idea of going back to the spiritual. That was the book where I started to really expand. So the first two books are very food-focused like what you said, Kay… effects everything else, but for me, I had to get the food under control first and then I was like, “Oh, and there’s so much more depth to wellness than just what we eat.”
Kimberly: And, I started to really go deeper and realize, “Wow, my emotions, my energetic understanding, my spiritual, everything effects everything.” And so, in this regard, your third eye, so when we think of the chakras, they’re basically energy centers located along your spine, along the core of your body. And your sixth chakra is actually right between your eyebrows and a little bit higher up. And, blocks or imbalances in your third eye are said to also effect your vision. And your third eye is your seat of intuition. And, it’s said to be where you can see what your two physical eyes cannot, meaning deeper perceptions. Like you have a hunch, you have intuition about someone, or a situation. So kind of related to what I was saying, Sarah, if there’s something maybe you don’t want to see, or you’re not listening to your intuition, that would be the energetic standpoint. And, the spiritual perspective rather.
Kimberly: So just seeing how you can open your third eye, which is like a darker blue. So foods like blueberries would be related here and it’s not associated with a specific element, but if you want to read about chakras, this is a whole other conversation. You should check out the Beauty Detox Power too. But yeah, it’s a great idea to meditate on your third eye and to listen to your intuition and to see, just pause and listen to yourself more. And that could be some of the ways to open up your third eye and to possibly remove any spiritual blocks there as well.

Kimberly: So… yes, there’s a lot I have to say about this topic. Beth, thank you so much for your question. I think a lot of people suffer from different sorts of sensitivities and histamine could be one of them. I definitely think that a plant-based diet for many different reasons can help. One of the primary reasons is that poor gut health can trigger histamine sensitivities and histamine intolerance. And a plant-based diet is wonderful for your… incredible for your gut health really because, first of all, only plant foods contain fiber and fiber feeds the short chain fatty acids in your gut, which are then secreted out into the bloodstream and are anti-inflammatory and helps to keep your system in balance. Also, eating plant-based means you’re going to eliminate very difficult to digest foods such as excessive meat and all dairy, which is going to… there’s so much research about how meat specifically and dairy can alter the microbiome and reduce gut health and have very adverse effects on digestion.
Kimberly: So yes, absolutely, a hundred percent recommend a plant-based diet. Try it in your body, see how you do. You may want to also try eliminating gluten, which can be a big sensitivity as you’re shifting your gut health, just rebalancing everything. I definitely recommend taking our SBO probiotic, checking it out. But, again, just really nurturing your gut health, seeing what foods work best for you, going on a plant-based diet, eliminating those difficult to digest foods could be a really wonderful practice. And then the high histamine foods to avoid include, a lot of them are aged cheeses and the dairies and the fish and seafood and things that you will naturally avoid when you go plant-based. Now, there are some other foods, some plant-based foods in the beginning as you’re rebalancing, as you mentioned, sometimes avocado could throw you off. Avocado is considered a high histamine food, as is alcohol.
Kimberly: Let’s see, there’s also dried fruit and any sort of fermented thing like soy sauce is something you want to avoid right now. And also just kind of… you want to eat fresh food. So nothing that’s been sitting around in the fridge. Leftovers or something that you definitely want to sort of stay away from. But the good news is that on a plant-based diet, there’s so many wonderful, nourishing foods that you can enjoy. Most vegetables in season right now, the squash and the lettuce and the leeks and the cauliflower and the broccoli and bok choy. So there’s a billion. Arugula, asparagus, all the wonderful fruit that we put in our GGS like apples, berries would be great for you. Peaches, they’re not in season right now, but you could even get frozen peaches. Fresh herbs. So, there’s… and then all the gluten-free grains that we eat a lot of here like quinoa and brown rice.
Kimberly: It’s amazing. I’ll go back to… I’ve been talking so much and posting so many stories about Blue Zone Kitchen, which is this wonderful book that just came out from Dan Buettner and you beauties may have heard, very recently, I interviewed him on the podcast and actually, Kay, I went to his book launch party last week and it was incredible. His book is number one on Amazon, which makes me really happy because he is not arguing study for study here. He’s not a paleo person, or a vegan person, or a keto person. He’s just saying, “Hey, this is what, historically, has been the diet for the healthiest long-livid people.” And the four food groups that he found were consistent across the blue zone. So there’s five blue zones across the world. Number one, grain. So he’s said, not only do they eat grain every day, they eat them pretty much every meal.
Kimberly: So grain, greens, nuts, and beans. So I will say, if we follow the healthiest people in the world, those would be some of our primary food groups. I’ve been thinking… this is so ridiculous. I told [inaudible 00:34:29] this, my husband. I said, “I had a dream one night that I asked him, I said, ‘What about fruit? What about fruit? How does it fit in with the blue zones?'” And in my dream, he was like, “Oh, it’s actually like 17% of the diet,” which isn’t the right percentage, but that’s how my dreams go sometimes because I think about this stuff so much.
Katelyn: That’s so funny. It’s coming into you even when you’re sleeping. Well, it’s so impactful. I think it’s great to talk about this and share resources with people beyond our offerings and just to show this amazing history and just [crosstalk 00:35:05] founded and so many decades of information and I’m excited to check out the book myself. Yeah, it’s a great gift for the holidays too.

Kimberly: All right, love. Well, I’ll close out with our thought of the week. I’m going to bring you guys a quote to mull over today and through the rest of the weekend. It is, “The attitude of gratitude brings you opportunities beyond your concept and then you can create a miracle.” This is from Yogi Bhajan, who is the person, the yogi that brought Kundalini yoga to the West. So, I don’t do too much Kundalini yoga, but I have some very good friends who are very into it. And so, I hear about it from time to time, but I really do love this quote about gratitude is positivity. We talk about gratitude a lot this month in our Soluna Circle where our theme this month is steady joy and you can check that out online. But it’s this idea that gratitude is an energy. It’s a vibration just like everything else. And when we’re very grateful, when we slow down, it effects everything in a positive way.

It is… we can slow down and be grateful for every bite of food and we eat less and we can slow down and appreciate each breath and each moment and that slowing down can help us be so happy that our coworker next to us doesn’t bug us as much.
