Topic: The Power of Medicinal Mushrooms
Hi everyone and welcome back to our Thursday Q &A show. I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far. And today we’re gonna be talking about a topic that affects multiple cornerstones, especially our bodies and emotional wellbeing. And it has to do with trauma and specifically how to release trauma from your body and open your heart. So when I read this book a few years ago called Your Body Keeps the Score. I was surprised to learn that by his estimation, about 75 % or more of Americans have experienced some form of trauma in their childhood. And I imagine there are similar statistics depending on which country you happen to be from. But the point is that most of us, the vast majority of us, experience some form of trauma, something that makes us create certain patterns for survival or protecting ourselves into our adulthood, into the present moment where we are today.

STUDIES AND RESEARCH
- A 2020 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that B vitamins, especially B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6, are critical in energy production from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Adequate intake of these vitamins can enhance energy levels and improve overall metabolic function.
- A 2016 Study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry examined the role of B vitamins in cognitive function and mental health and found that B vitamins, particularly B6, B9 (folate), and B12, are associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline, improved mood, and lower incidence of depression and anxiety.
- A 2021 study in the American Heart Journal explored the impact of B vitamins on cardiovascular health and found that B vitamins, especially B6, B9, and B12, help reduce homocysteine levels, an amino acid linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Lowering homocysteine can help prevent heart disease and stroke.
- A 2020 Study published in the Journal of Nutrients examined the effects of B vitamins on the immune system and found that B6, B9, and B12, play a role in supporting the immune response. They also help in the production and proper functioning of immune cells, thus enhancing the body’s ability to fight infections.
- A 2023 study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology focused on the dermatological benefits of B vitamins. The study found that B vitamins like B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B7 (biotin) contribute to healthy skin, hair, and nails. They also can be used in treatments for conditions such as acne, hair thinning, and brittle nails.
- Research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology investigated the role of B vitamins during pregnancy. B9 (folate) is essential for fetal development, particularly in preventing neural tube defects. B6 and B12 also support healthy pregnancy outcomes by aiding in the development of the baby’s brain and nervous system.
- A 2002 study in Diabetes Care examined the effect of B vitamins on diabetes management. It found that B vitamins, especially B1, B6, and B12, can help manage diabetic neuropathy and support overall blood sugar regulation.
- A 2011 Study published in the Journal of Human Psychopharmacology explored the relationship between B vitamins and stress. It found that Supplementation with B vitamins has been shown to reduce work-related stress, enhance mood, and improve overall mental well-being.

Hello everyone and welcome back to our Thursday Q &A show. I hope that you’re having a lovely week so far and I’m very excited to be here with you on this day, which is pretty much a halfway, roughly halfway point through the week to talk about mushrooms and specifically how harnessing the power of medicinal mushrooms can help to improve your mental and your physical health.
So as always, we like to rotate around the quarterstones. They all affect us in different ways. They affect our energy, our emotional well-being, certainly our meditation practice, certainly our abilities to embody more heart energy and to feel more present and kind and loving and in our really true essence. That’s the power of foods and herbs and plants and anything we really put into our bodies. Now, maybe you’ve heard of medicinal mushrooms a lot, particularly the last few years, I feel like they’ve gotten quite trendy. There’s mushroom drinks, there’s mushroom teas, there’s mushroom coffee. We want to be really careful with the types of mushrooms and the amounts that we ingest as we’ll get into in today’s show. Because just like anything, I feel like in our culture that starts to get trendy, sometimes the quality isn’t really there. And sometimes we can definitely overdo things.
And there is limits to how much of certain things that we want to ingest, mushrooms being one of those things, just like many other things, right? It’s not, you sometimes I feel, and I meet a lot of people in the wellness world that can, it’s easy to adopt this mindset, you know, more is more. There’s so much out there. So we want to really take a balanced approach because when we do, we’re able to get the benefits of these medicinal mushrooms, but not, not take on
excess amounts which can have a not so great effect on our energy, which we’ll talk about in just a moment. But I love medicinal mushrooms. Like I said, I love this topic. I love that we have available to us these really powerful plants and their energies and their qualities that we can take in. And it’s widely available for most all of us.
Kimberly Snyder (02:18.444)
Before we go further, little reminder that today’s research, today’s show notes are over at mysaluna.com, which is our hub where you can also access our amazing courses, our digestive products, especially right now, I’ll say the SBO probiotics and detoxing and digestive enzymes this time of the year as we go into holidays are particularly important. You’ll find other podcasts you can enjoy, the Heart Aligned Meditation Tracks and of course, information on the new book, The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts.
Let’s get right into our show today. I am very grateful to Josie, who lives in Denver, who brought forward this question. We’ve actually been getting quite a few questions around mushrooms. Josie writes, Kimberly, I’ve been a long time listener and I love the show. I have a question for you about medicinal mushrooms. Which ones do you recommend and how do they benefit you? So thank you again, Josie, for bringing this up.
Before we get into specifics, I want to talk about the qualities and the energies of mushrooms as a group, which I think is really important to understand. Our Western modern world is very fixated on numbers, such as how many minerals do mushrooms have, what is the amount of vitamin D, if any, so forth.
I’m really tongue-tied this morning. was shooting this quite early in the morning. Anyways, the numeric evaluations of certain foods, including mushrooms, is what we tend to focus on. But if we look back at these incredible ancient medicinal practices, such as our uvata, we’re looking at the energetics of mushrooms. So one of the things that we want to pay attention to is where these foods are actually grown.
Mushrooms are grown deep in the earth. They’re grown in the soil. They have very grounding, calming properties for our nervous system, particularly certain types of mushrooms, which make them very useful in the modern world. However, we do not want to overeat mushrooms because Ayurveda will say that they in excess can be tamasic, meaning they can make us a bit slothful in excess, a little bit more
Kimberly Snyder (04:42.122)
dulled down. So as I was saying at the top of our show, we want to be mindful how much we’re actually ingesting and how often. Now, if you are speaking of probiotics, you may or may not realize that turkey tail mushroom is in our probiotic formula. It’s in our SBOs as well as Shilajit. We use these incredible compounds to help the total formula, which includes prebiotics and
So it’s this really incredible formula, which is based in nature. It’s based in soil-born organisms, similarly to how our ancestors used to eat a little bit of soil to get these healthy strains, which are able to survive your GI tract and actually implant and rebalance. So we’re using mushrooms in that formula. So if you’re having SBO probiotics, know that you’re getting some medicinal mushrooms every day. There’s also cordyceps mushrooms in our
glowing greens powder formula, which is a really grounding plant in that incredible formula, which is chosen with seven plants. We’ll talk about cordyceps in just a moment when we get into some specifics. But just know that I have included medicinal mushrooms in our formulas because of their incredible properties. Now where the balance is, is
If you start to hear, mushrooms are amazing, and you start to have them, you know, many, many times a day, let’s say you’re drinking mushroom coffee all day long, and you’re having mushroom chocolates and mushroom elixirs, and it just powders, you can add into everything. There is the balance. I’m going to say that right now at the top of the show. You don’t want to overdo mushrooms because whilst they are powerful and they are beneficial in excess.
They can create more of this tamasic slothful energy, which arubidises can also make your consciousness sleepy. The sattvic foods, for instance, green vegetables, these incredible high vibration fruits are bringing your consciousness up. They’re bringing you into your total vitality, right? So that’s why we can have a lot of greens in our glowing green smoothie. We have these powerful plants in the glowing greens powder, but we don’t want to overeat sugar. We don’t want to overeat wheat.
Kimberly Snyder (07:03.832)
We don’t want to even overeat some of these beneficial foods like medicinal mushrooms because they are not meant to be over consumed. Now, one of the great things about mushrooms because they’re grown on the earth is that they contain an abundance of minerals. They have a really powerful nutritional profile and you do want to make sure to get organic mushrooms and organic medicinal mushrooms because they can absorb
So many toxins from the soil from the pesticides that are sprayed on the land So we want to be really careful where we’re sourcing these mushrooms because of course in the world we’re living in today We want to reduce our toxic load as much as possible And now I want to share I think that mushroom foragers are amazing I know people that forage mushrooms in Europe and Asia and it becomes a very you know incredible
pastime, but you want to make sure that you know what you are doing. I love this saying that I heard from my Norwegian friend, which is there are bold mycologists, one that hunts for mushrooms, and there are old mycologists, but there are not bold and old mycologists, right? So if we’re adventurous and we’re seeking the mushrooms, we may not live so long because some of them can be very dangerous to the human system.
On the other hand, there are ones that have been used for millennia, right? Are you made a recognized mushroom? So does traditional Chinese medicine, particularly reishi has been used in Chinese medicine for its incredible immune boosting properties. Mushrooms also have different polysaccharides. have proteins. They’ve been shown to even fight cancer. They’ve been shown to improve vitality.
So we want to educate ourselves around these incredible compounds and how we can use them in our daily life. So the first one I want to talk about is cordyceps, as I mentioned, is one of my favorite mushrooms. It’s a very powerful mushroom, and it’s one that’s used in our glowing greens powder. So the GGP, as we affectionately call it, which is something that I personally consume every single day, I recommend you do the same.
Kimberly Snyder (09:26.85)
has a combination of Amalaki, which we’ve talked about, which increases your vitality. Arubeda says it can be used long-term by all body types. It’s considered the most rejuvenative herb, as well as cordyceps mushrooms in this amount. Now, a 2010 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that cordyceps helped to improve exercise performance and contributed to greater fatigue resistance.
So one of the things that cordyceps has been associated with is this vitality, this energy, but energy in a focused way. You know, when you have a lot of caffeine, you just have a ton of coffee. I’ve done this a couple of times myself, although I try to be really careful with coffee because I think it’s really powerful. I am particularly sensitive to caffeine, but you know, when you have so much coffee and you don’t necessarily feel grounded, you can feel jittery, can feel…
shaky. I don’t like that feeling. When I feel like that, I almost feel like I’m not myself. I don’t feel like I write well. I don’t feel like I’m expressing myself well on meetings and Zooms. So it’s almost like not my authentic self. But one thing about quarter steps mushrooms, because it’s so earthy, it’s giving you that groundedness. The more time goes on, I realize how important this quality of groundedness is.
We can have the most creative ideas, right? We can be inspired to start this project or to design this thing or to create something. But if we don’t have the grounded energy inside of us, we don’t see the project through, we don’t finish the book, we don’t write the proposal, right? We don’t actually produce the thing. So these plants that are grounding, including cordyceps, mushrooms, impart this energy to us.
which is enlivening, is rejuvenative. It has this quality to boost our immunity at the same time that it grounds us. In fact, in 2021, another study in phytotherapy research found that cordyceps help to enhance the immune response specifically. So really wonderful for energy, for athletic performance even, the immune system.
Kimberly Snyder (11:52.238)
and also for anti-aging properties and even to support heart health. So back to heart coherence and how powerful it is to stay so calm and in our hearts and allowing the heart brain to move forward in our lives so that we are able to express the true self, to express the most kind, loving, calm, creative aspect of ourselves. Quarticeps is one that we definitely want to turn to.
Now let’s talk about reishi, which is a really powerful mushroom as well. It is also correlated with immunity. A 2023 study in Scientific Reports found that reishi extract was elevating immunity and also had anti-inflammatory effects. A 2005 study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that reishi could help to reduce anxiety and improve overall mood. So again,
These mushrooms have effects not just on our physical body, the physical organs, but also on our mental and emotional states. So many of us deal with anxiety and stress. Just everything feels so rushed in today’s world. There’s so much of the pace of being on the phones and getting from place to place is so unnatural. That’s why I advise us to
take these moments to breathe into the heart. These mini breaks I think are really essential throughout the day. Also ways in which we can enjoy some of these teas and elixirs. know, we don’t wanna overdo the mushroom coffee, but if we wanna have a hot drink that contains reishi or some of these incredible mushrooms, we wanna enjoy it. We wanna take the time to prepare it with love and care. For me, that includes using one of my favorite mugs.
and then to really take in these plants, to take it in, not rushing through. One of the things I do when I make an elixir is I hold it to my heart before I drink it. I have an intention for taking that medicine in. And anytime you’re making something as simple as hot water with lemon for yourself, it can be therapeutic and healing and medicinal, but you wanna set an intention. You wanna give that energy into what you’re putting into your body.
Kimberly Snyder (14:15.706)
which also settles you in. It prepares your digestion to take in the energy of that plant as simple as is. It could be sliced ginger and water, ginger, lemon, right? But it’s the intention and the quality with which we take it in, the quality with which we connect with the plants. So I also advise doing that as well. Another plant that is really, mushroom, which you may be hearing a lot about, that’s really beautiful.
If you’ve ever seen it, it almost looks like a log. I’ve seen it at the farmer’s market is chaga. I even love that word chaga. 2021 study in the Hellion journal of research found that chaga mushrooms possess potent antioxidant properties, which can help protect cells from oxidative stress. Now, oxidative stress creates unhealthy cells, we could say in a simplified sense.
which makes our cells age. So there’s these incredible strengthening, resilient boosting properties to the mushrooms. And I want you to consider a mushroom in nature. If you’ve taken a hike and you’ve seen a mushroom, how hardy, almost from another world, these mushrooms look like, right? They just pop up. Think about how hardy and sturdy that mushroom seems.
I mean, it’s not as hard or dense as a rock, of course, but it’s pretty sturdy sitting there being protected against wind and rain and different elements. So I have to say that there are many, many mushrooms that we find in Hawaii and we do hikes all the time and we play a game with the kids and especially my older son who’s eight sometimes complains about the long walks. We still hold the little one for part of the walk, so he doesn’t complain as much.
But to get them excited, as we continue on the hike, we play the mushroom game, which is, know, spotting the next mushroom and then the next one and the next one. So it makes it really fun to be our own mycologist. We don’t touch them. We don’t eat them. But we see them underneath logs and on trees and growing on rocks. All these different colors, how sturdy and powerful they are. Sometimes we do the same hike a couple of days in a row and we’ll see different mushrooms every day. So they sprout up.
Kimberly Snyder (16:36.802)
They flower, they bloom almost overnight or literally overnight in some cases. So they have some really powerful energy. It reminds me of this other plant called Ashitaba, which is in our glowing greens powder as well. It’s called the forever leaf. So you cut it and it grows. You cut it again and it grows. You think about how spirit, God, higher intelligence, universe, however you like to think of it.
created all these different plants and trees that have very different energies. And when we ingest these plants, we want to just really take in the miracle of this intelligence, which goes into our bodies and can really impart some of these energetic qualities. How amazing it is that we can choose to ingest these foods, which become like medicine in the body.
healing, directing, boosting our body, giving fresh inspiration to our bodily cells to wake up, protect itself against toxins. This is why it helps to boost immunity, to become more resilient. It really is amazing when we take this more holistic, energetic approach to food instead of reducing it down to numbers, we can really start to respect how powerful these plants really are.
and the power that they can impart in our bodies. So another study on Chaga from 2025 found in the Mycobiology Journal found that Chaga can also stimulate the immune system by promoting the production of cytokines. So again, these mushrooms are powerful. They can do so much. Notice that we’re talking about small amounts, extracts.
Again, treating these mushrooms with respect, they’re not meant to be over consumed. As I mentioned at the top of the show, we wanna respect that certain foods, we don’t wanna overdo the tamasic quality of, because then it would take us out of sapphic, it would take us out of balance, right? Even beneficial foods and definitely mushrooms. So another one I wanna mention is called Lion’s Mane and a 28 study in the journal of…
Kimberly Snyder (19:00.128)
psychotherapy research found that lion’s mane helped to improve cognitive function. A 2023 study in the Annals of Innovation in Medicine found that lion’s mane helped to promote the growth of nerve cells and improved memory. So if you’re looking for a brain booster, there’s so many different node tropics out there and different formulas to boost focus. And generally, when we’re talking about things, I like to work with
plants and compounds that work with the heart and the brain together since the heart is another brain and When you get your heart and brain in alignment known as heart coherence you really create true vitality You really create this clarity and this creativity and almost this unstoppable energy Right when we’re when our hearts and brains are going in different directions We’re like a house divided but when we’re united when we are coherent and harmonized on the inside of us then our best
Our best energy comes forth, our best ideas, our best communication became truly powerful. So Lion’s Mane is something that you may consider taking if you want to create that beautiful focus without the jitteriness of excess caffeine, excess coffee. There’s certain different supplements that take it now. You can again try the different mushroom teas or mushroom coffees that contain Lion’s Mane and you can look out for it specifically.
Now, let’s talk about turkey tail, which is one of my favorites. In 2017, a study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences found that turkey tail mushrooms can support gut health by promoting beneficial gut bacteria. Again, turkey tail is in our feel-good SBO probiotic formula, which if you haven’t tried yet, I highly recommend you do. It is the one supplement that I never miss.
Every single day, I’ve been taking it for years. Our guts need that daily support. Back to the numbers, there are many formulas out there created for marketing purposes with a very high culture count that is not necessarily in the ratio. It’s not conducive to harmonizing with your body. What is is SBO formulas are a formula such as ours, which is the proper strains, the proper ratios, prebiotics.
Kimberly Snyder (21:24.91)
post-biotics, turkey tails, shilajit, these incredible plants which work synergistically in the formula to give you that incredible balance. Again, the gut is also a type of brain. As we balance the brain in our guts, we can balance the brain in our hearts and in our heads. We can feel that overall vitality, that boost. I remember my gut health being totally out of whack years ago, feeling so anxious, having horrible acne.
really struggling with my weight, just struggling through life in many ways, my thoughts, having lots of negativity. And everything does work together. And I can say that God Health, the gift of God Health has been so powerful in my life and it’s allowed me to flourish spiritually and to now be writing about the heart and all these parts of my life which have excelled, which would not have excelled.
without gut health. So everything works together. Gut health is so powerful for our spiritual practice. It’s so powerful for, of course, our food to digest and for our relationships to be calm and grounded and increasingly deeper. So please, you know, check it out. I offer the SBO formula to you from my heart because it’s helped me so much and it’s in alignment with nature and it’s very powerful. The way it was formulated, the scientists we worked with.
as well. So I encourage you, especially now going into the holidays. A 2004 study in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms also demonstrated that turkey tail extract can enhance the activity of natural killer cells, which play a crucial role in the body’s defense against tumors in virally infected cells. So again, the resilience, not just on a daily basis, but long term of these mushrooms cannot be overstated.
Now, maitake mushrooms are also a wonderful mushroom. I’m smiling because when I see them at the farmer’s market, they’re also called hen of the woods. I buy them up. I find them absolutely delicious to cook with. And a study published in the Nutrients Journal in 2021 found that maitake extract can improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels. A 2009 study in the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Psychology
Kimberly Snyder (23:50.04)
found that maitake extract stimulated the immune system and increased various immune cells. So remember, we’re talking about compounds that you don’t necessarily cook with. You wouldn’t necessarily cook with turkey tail or cordyceps. Sometimes you can find them, but sometimes it’s easier to find certain mushrooms like maitake or the next one we’re talking about, which is shiitake mushrooms. A lot of health markets have them.
They can be expensive, especially to certain types of year. So it may be one you want to look for at certain markets or even online to get more affordably. But a 2016 study in the Journal of Nutrition found that shiitake mushrooms can lower cholesterol levels and improve cardiovascular health. A 2015 study in the Journal of American College of Nutrition found that regular consumption of shiitake mushrooms enhanced immune function in healthy adults.
So another thing I wanna talk about is using mushrooms in your food. I specifically asked Dr. J. Vaidya Dey, my Ayurvedic teacher, when I was taking my Ayurvedic nutritional classes with him. And he said, yes, you can cook with mushrooms, but not too much, was his general answer, because Ayurveda is all about making non-specific recommendations.
but more specifically for your body. So this is where I want to bring in the importance of using your own intuition when it comes to your body. Arjuveda will generally recommend cooking mushrooms versus having raw mushrooms. Sometimes when I’m cooking mushrooms, I wash them. My kids will eat one or two. I do myself. But in general, sometimes you know when you see those veggie platters and they’re sliced raw mushrooms.
Generally, Ayurveda will say it is better to cook the mushrooms to make them more digestible, more easy for your body to take in the nutrients. Now, I definitely have mushrooms more in the winter. I like to saute them. I put them in my bowls. I like to eat them with quinoa and greens. I like to put them in certain soups. For some reason, I like them more in the winter than in the spring.
Kimberly Snyder (26:09.582)
where for me it’s really about the raw foods in the spring. This is the time for more of those enzymes to wake up your body after the long winter. I wouldn’t have mushrooms every day, but again, everybody’s body is different. You may go through different periods where you’re craving different mushrooms. And of course, we didn’t talk about baby bellas, portobello mushrooms, which may not.
I mean, they’re medicinal in their own way. know, mushrooms such as portobello have vitamin D. They definitely have compounds. But today’s show focused on more of these mushrooms where there’s a lot of studies related to their anti-cancer effects, immune, immune promoting effects, their anti-inflammatory effects and so on. But of course, those mushrooms are also wonderful to include. They also contain protein. If you’re looking for inspiration around mushrooms,
We definitely have recipes on our website at mysaluna.com. There is a stuffed mushroom recipe that I love so much. You basically create a type of pesto using some nuts and even some of the mushroom stems themselves and basil and lemon and sea salt and grinding it up and stuffing the mushrooms and baking them.
I use that a lot at different holiday functions. If I have to bring a platter, sometimes I’ll bring stuffed mushrooms. My kids love them. I love stuffing portobello mushrooms. I love grilling portobello mushrooms, baking them, using them in different ways. But again, I urge you to use balance with all these different types of mushrooms to make sure that you’re not overdoing the mushrooms that you cook with.
and even the medicinal mushrooms. There’s also times of the year, as I mentioned, when you reflect back on the chaga, the reishi, there’s ones that you may be called to in certain periods. Certainly, if you’re using certain things long-term, like the SBO probiotics and the GGP, you are getting the cordyceps and the turkey tail already. So I want to mention that for our community, because so many of us use those products. Every day long-term, you don’t necessarily need another source of those actual mushrooms.
Kimberly Snyder (28:25.612)
And I know for myself, I’m very grateful to have those mushrooms in my life. I feel their benefits. I think it’s, you again, I’m just very appreciative that we can have access to these amazing foods, you know, not necessarily growing them ourselves, different parts of the world, where we can access these foods now. I think it’s really amazing. And I surely am grateful. So I hope today’s show…
is inspiring to you to utilize these powerful foods slash medicines in your life for your body, for your emotional well-being, for focus, for energy, for calmness, for groundedness, which helps with heart coherence. It helps us to ground ourselves so that we can really be our creative selves, but not just let ideas come and go and float away, but actually bring them forward into the world to fruition all the way through to the finish line.
If you are already thinking about the New Year ahead, right, we’re coming into this winter time where ideas are starting to germinate and maybe come up inside of you, now is a really powerful time to consider adding these mushrooms in because we can have the best ideas. But again, we want to go all the way. We want to bring them forward through our bodies, through ourselves, through our consciousness and into physical reality. And that is one of the medicines of the mushrooms that they are so grounding and so powerful.
So please check out the show notes as always, amysoluna.com, spelled M-Y-S-O-L-L-U-N-A.com. If you didn’t know, saluna means the sun and the moon. It represents the heart and the wholeness in nature. This wholeness is inside of each and every single one of us. So we believe here at Saluna that to become our most vital, to become our most beautiful inside and out, to be our most energetic creative selves, we wanna nurture that wholeness. Because when we are fragmented, we are in lack.
whether that lack is in our microbiome, whether that lack is in our self-esteem, we do not create our highest energy and our highest potential. So it’s essential to nurture our wholeness. And that is what our community is all about. I’m so grateful for you joining us today. Please check out all our offerings. Please keep in touch with me. I’m also on social at underscore Kimberly Snyder. Please keep your questions coming. There’s a tab on the website for the podcast.
Kimberly Snyder (30:49.994)
And as always, I truly appreciate reviews. Please leave one for this podcast. Please leave one for the book, The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts. If you have read it, to keep the momentum up, to help other hearts find this life-changing information.
