This week’s topic is: Healthy Ways On How To Supercharge Your Summer Diet
The cornerstone we’re focusing on this week is food and it’s very important we shift our diet season by season. There’s a lot of research out there showing how seasonal eating really helps our gut microbiome. It helps us maintain healthy weight or potentially lose weight. And it really helps our bodies with this adjustment that happens season to season, as far as our digestive enzymes and properly assimilating our nutrients, and even our neurotransmitters shift season to season.
It’s like how we put on different clothes for the seasons or how we may naturally have different things in our garden in the season. If we are chronically eating out of season, then we don’t feel the fullest health and wellness and energy in our bodies because the truth is that we’re part of nature. And so these natural organic shifts that we see in nature are essential to execute in our own personal diets in order to feel our peak health and our peak energy.

Kimberly: 00:01 Namaste and welcome back to our Thursday Q&A podcast where our topic this week is Healthy Ways On How To Supercharge Your Summer Diet. So obviously our cornerstone we’re focusing on this week is food, and it is very important that we shift our diet season by season. We’re gonna get into some of the research in just a moment, but there is a lot of research out there showing how seasonal eating really helps our gut microbiome. It helps us maintain healthy weight or potentially lose weight. And it really helps our bodies with, um, this adjustment that happens season to season, as far as our digestive enzymes and properly assimilating our nutrients and even our neurotransmitters shift season to season. So it’s like how we put on different clothes for the seasons or how we may naturally have different things in our garden in the season. If we are chronically eating out of season and we are ignoring that there is a different season here for sure. Then we don’t feel the fullest health and wellness and energy in our bodies because the truth is that we’re part of nature. And so these natural organic shifts that we see in nature are essential to execute in our own personal diets in order to feel our peak health and our peak energy.

Question around the topic of: Healthy Ways On How To Supercharge Your Summer Diet: Hello Kimberly, I am a longtime listener of your podcast and love it! I live in a cold weather city, so I tend to eat heavier in the colder months and gain weight. Now that it is summertime what should I change in my diet to be more in sync with the season and shed those winter pounds.
Kimberly: 03:51 Okay, let’s get right into our show. Now, today, this comes from Debbie who lives in Minnesota. So Debbie, thank you so much for submitting your question. Thank you so much for being part of our community. And your question is, hello, Kimberly. I am a longtime listener of your podcast and I love it. I live in a cold weather city, so I tend to eat heavier in the colder months and gain weight. Now that it is summertime, what should I change in my diet to be more in sync with the season and shed those winter pounds. So, Debbie, thank you so much for your question and sending you lots of love and positivity. I can only imagine how cold it is in Minnesota in the winter. I’ve never been to that state. So it is very natural to eat heavier foods, to help fortify our bodies against extreme weather. And I love that you talk about this shift in the summertime and being in sync with the season.
Kimberly: 04:56 This quality of being in sync is a very powerful quality that we can all work to create more of in our lives, because it means that we’re working with the flow of things. We’re working with the flow of the greater environment around us. And we’re not fighting. We’re not just super imposing what we want or what we think on top, but we’re co-creating, we are just in this beautiful state of receptivity and adaptability. So before I get into some specific practices that I recommend, I want to go back to a little bit more research, which we will link to in the show notes, if you’re interested.
Kimberly: 05:40 So, as I mentioned at the top of the show, it’s interesting how many, um, how much information and research is coming out, really showing that seasonal eating. Isn’t just about foods tasting better, which they do because they’re more fresh and they’re grown locally and they don’t have to be transported as far. And so we are able to really benefit from that freshness and that better taste. But besides that, there’s more research. That’s interesting, including out of Stanford, where they studied one of the tribes in the, in Tanzania and what they found was that they changed their diet dramatically with each season to really accommodate what was going on in nature and what was available. And the researchers found in, in accordance with that, there was a real change in the microbes, in their gut microbiome, suggesting that this seasonal eating was allowing their digestion and their gut microbiome to stay healthy and to stay an optional, optimal functionality.
Kimberly: 06:54 This is really important because when our gut health is really jamming, so to speak, we take in nutrients, we tend to expel the waste more efficiently. We don’t hold on. We tend to be less bloated. We tend to, um, just be more effective machines. It’s easier to let go of excess weight. And so there’s some other studies that are really interesting in case you wanna go a little bit deeper, just showing how again, the, the bacteria and the gut shifted and was more robust. When people practiced seasonal eating, it really did help with the food consumption. It helped with the body. And this is something that’s gonna be very powerful when we’re talking about looking to, to shed excess weight and just to feel more energy season to season <affirmative>.
Kimberly: 07:50 So the first thing that we’ll talk about in summer is eating really wonderful hydrating high water fruits and veggies, because this is what nature is growing now. And this is what nature is saying to us eat this. Here’s what we got. It’s peak rightness, peak, fresh freshness, peak nutrition. So one that I recommend is watermelon, which is a wonderful, wonderful high water fruit that’s high vitamin C. And it also helps as antioxidants to help combat free radicals. And it also has certain compounds that help with blood flow. So this beautiful flow that we wanna get into to remove some of the stagnation of winter is gonna be found in watermelon, which is also filled with electrolytes to maintain hydration. So some other fruits with high water content include strawberries, beautiful, colorful fruits, grape fruit, cantaloupe, peaches, blackberries, pineapple, and blueberries. Now some veggies with high water content include cucumber with 95%. And I have to say, it’s such a great afterschool snack for kids or after camp snack. I just cut up cucumbers. I sprinkled a tiny bit of sea salt, and I just have them on the table when my, when Emerson comes home and then Moses will eat them as well. They just no on the cucumbers and it’s, it’s recharging. It’s really great for kids and adults, lettuce, CEL, and tomatoes.
Kimberly: 09:30 So these are the fruits and the vegetables that are going to help cleanse us again, cleanse the stagnation of winter. They’re also gonna help give us more of that important hydration. When we are hydrated, our metabolism can go up 30%. So we wanna eat these high content, these high watery fruits and veggies, which also have the added benefit of fiber, which is going to help keep us more satiated. And it, it influences gut hormones. It helps to reduce inflammation in the body. It signals to our brain, more feelings of fullness. And so we’re not talking about just juice here. There’s a big difference between oranges and orange juice. And if you eat the whole orange, you’re not gonna be able to really overeat the oranges because there’s all that fiber you’re gonna get full. So we wanna focus on these types of foods now in summer and salads and beautiful smoothies, every anything that really comprises the whole food. And besides that, it is important as well to drink lots of water so we can drink water. As we wake up, having a glass of water in the morning is a great way to rev your metabolism and throughout the day, because we do tend to sweat more. Now, of course, we tend to be more dehydrated and it’s so important that we combat that in order to feel our best and to increase detoxification and healthy weight loss, if that’s our goal as well.
Kimberly: 11:07 So another great food that I recommend this summer, Debbie and everyone is avocados. So we do need healthy fat in order for our hormones to function optimally, in order to feel satiated, we do need fat and avocados have a good amount of water. So they’re not this dense, dense, fat. That can be a little bit harder to metabolize. Like if we’re having a lot of oil for instance, but avocados are a really, um, wonderful source of potassium, vitamin B six and this beautiful mono mono unsaturated fat, that digest pretty well. And again, it’s, it’s something that you can pair with, uh, on a salad to give it more density, but density, that’s not too difficult to digest, but it replaces some heavier foods because the avocado in and of itself can be very satisfying. So you can play with different seasonings on the avocado, or you can just play with it super plain, which is my favorite way to have it. Sometimes I eat it avocado almost like an apple. I peel it off and it’s very satisfying.
Kimberly: 12:25 And then another component of increasing your wellness is sort of nutrient. We can call it for increasing your wellness and your, um, just feeling lighter in the summer is fiber. So remember that fiber is only found in fruits and vegetables and plant foods. So we’ve already been talking about fruits and vegetables, but it’s just important to remember that it’s really not about counting calories. It’s not about just trying to manipulate all these macronutrients, but it goes back to just natural, healthy food, heavy, uh, podcast with Dr. Giles, ya, which you can check out. And he wrote this wonderful book called why calories don’t count. And he talks about he’s a whole section on the importance of fiber and why that is. What is that? That’s the key. One of the big keys to weight loss and healthy weight maintenance and health. Whereas people tend to focus on the wrong thing.
Kimberly: 13:30 They tend to focus on protein or you know, something else. But when we have fiber, we naturally are more, um, full. We keep things moving in our body. So we keep detoxification and digestion functioning, optimally, and it keeps us from overindulging. It keeps our portion sizes in check. It keeps us from over snacking. So in the ideal sense, the morning practice for summer would really be fresh room, temperature, water, hot water with lemon, your SBO, your Solluna SBO probiotics, to really support your gut health. And to also help, especially if you’ve had excess stagnation from the winter and then to have a Glowing Green Smoothie®, which is packed with fiber. And for many of us would double our fiber intake, which would make enormous difference in your health and in your weight. So check these out for yourself. Let me know how you do check out the show notes at mysolluna.com for more information and studies and podcasts. I think you would enjoy keep the questions coming. I really love these, this format for our Q&A. I really love how practical this can be, which is where I know
