Question on: How To Transition To A Healthier Diet With Plant-Based Alternatives
Kimberly: Okay. So all of that being said, let’s dive right into our show today without any further ado. So today the topic is about transitioning to a healthier diet with plant-based alternatives. And our question today comes from Jill, who lives in Texas. Hi, Jill, sending you so much love out there to the beautiful state of Texas. And your question is I have recently decided to make healthier lifestyle changes, and I would like to adopt a plant-based diet. What is the best way to, to make lasting changes as I have been a meat and dairy eater for many years.
Kimberly: 03:23 So thank you so much, Jill, for being part of our community. Thank you so much for your question. And I feel full of joy right now that you have made this decision to be healthier and to take care of yourself and to adopt a plant-based diet. We know that plant-based foods are the most, not only the most nutritious, as far as containing macronutrients, but also the micronutrients and a wide range of vitamins and antioxidants and fiber, and only fiber only comes from plant foods. And fiber is so critical to our overall health and our overall vitality because it’s fiber that helps to feed the short chain fatty acids in the gut that lowers inflammation throughout our system. It also gives us sustained energy. And so for many different reasons, we want to have a plant forward diet. Now, I also wanna stress that we’re talking about transitioning here, we’re talking about long term.
Kimberly: 04:27 So I wanna stress that in my client work. And I have worked with many different types of people over the years, there are some personality types that do very well with a all or nothing approach. I’ve given up the meat and I’m never going back. And then there’s some people including my own husband that sort of dips in and out, and he did eat meat and then he was all vegan and then he was eating some meat. And then he now, where he is, is he does eat some meat occasionally, but he does eat largely plant based. So I say this distress that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. And I think it’s really important that we honor our own process. Because again, this isn’t a diet, this isn’t just flipping a switch. We really want to integrate these, these lifestyle shifts for the long term.
Kimberly: 05:20 And sometimes if we do something really fast and abruptly, we end up just going right back to where we were. So the reason I wanted to bring out plant-based alternatives, such as the, um, you know, the beyond burgers and impossible and all these different brands that have burgers and hot dogs and sausages and things is because I have found in my client work that for some people that is a very helpful tool to help in the transition. There’s a couple reasons for this. One of them is when, if you’re used to eating a lot of meat and dairy, then there’s a sense of fullness that you will feel in your belly that comes from that concentrated fat and protein. It’s like this dense bomb in your belly. And you’re used to that. So when you transition to eating fiber, there’s certain doctors like Dr. John McDougal that say, you know, it could take a month or longer for your body to get used, to feeling the fullness of fiber in a different way.
Kimberly: 06:27 So your stomach, even the muscles around your stomach, the ligaments, everything starts to adjust to this different way of eating. So I have found that transitioning to including some of these foods can be really helpful and can be, can feel familiar and also give you that sense of satisfaction. So I pull this stat, which is that global retail sales of plant-based food alternatives may reach 162 billion by 2030. So to give you a understanding of what an explosive stat of growth that is in 2020, the plant boost plant-based food alternative market is 20, was 29.4 billion. And this comes from Bloomberg intelligence. So this means that plant boost food will incorporate around, will comprise 7.7% of the global protein market. So it’s really exciting to see that more and more people are turning to these alternatives for a whole variety of reasons. One of which being of course, as more information comes out about the incredible benefits of not just adopting plant foods, but the benefits of getting off meat.
Kimberly: 07:50 And that’s because meat is so difficult to digest in the body. It’s full of acids. It’s full of all sorts of toxins, not just from the feed of the animals, but also the environment. The environmental working group has found that I believe it’s up to 90% more of certain persistent compounds in the environment, these horrible chemicals that really degrade the body come in through animal products because they are higher up the food chain. So what happens is bio accumulation, these, um, toxins get into the food supply and then the cow or the pig, you know, these higher forms of beings, these animals eat these foods for years, they’re taking it and taking it and taking it and it’s not leaving their body fully. So it’s bio accumulating over time. So as a human consumes, that higher form of animal flesh, they are taking in a tremendous amount of toxicity as well.
Kimberly: 08:51 And so this is why over the years, they’ve made recommendations to pregnant women, for instance, to avoid the, you know, bigger fish because of the mercury, because of the toxins. And I kind of laugh a little bit because I say, well, why would we want any of those toxins? Anyway, of course, when the fetus is developing, that is a particularly sensitive time, but any time of the year, we don’t want our diet to be a source of a lot of toxicity. Then there’s the environmental aspect, meaning that plant-based foods have a much lighter load for the environment. Everything from, you know, the, the greenhouse gases that are released from factory farms, the overfishing of the oceans, which kills all sorts of animals like dolphins and turtles, the destruction of forests around the world, including the rain forest to make space for cattle grazing. So what they do is they tear down the forests and then they, you know, create this flat land where cattle can graze.
Kimberly: 09:59 And it’s really sad because of course those, those forests are secret with all the trees and all the animals and all the wildlife there. And the third reason that I wanna bring up here, and this was the primary reason that I personally became plant based is the energetic reason. And this is because the VA texts, which VEIC medicine comes from, as well as the, the great scriptures, the Bagga Vata talk a lot about energy. They talk about balance. They talk about harmony and inner peace, meaning we’re in more of a SU Vic state. And this is the reason that the great yoga gurus and teachers for thousands of years have always recommended eating a vegetarian diet. Because if we eat a lot of meat, what happens is our energy tends to become more Rajasic, Tamasic restless, um, more anxiety, just more, uh, just restlessness or feeling more slothful.
Kimberly: 10:58 And it doesn’t contribute to that beautiful equanimity of calmness, which is the SOIC nature and plant based foods. Give us that SOIC nature. So what I recommend going back to your question, Jill is number one, working in some of these plant-based diet, uh, foods as you transition ones that you’re drawn to. We like we certainly have beyond burgers in our freezer and our family likes to incorporate those. I also personally love the Nicos cheeses and the MEOS vegan butter is also a staple in my home. I think they’re wonderful and they’re tasty. And so they’ll give you that satisfaction as you’re working to transition your diet overall. And then I would also recommend going into our website, mysolluna.com or checking out some of my earlier books and just finding five recipes or less three to five recipes that
Kimberly: 11:52 Really call to you and perfecting those right. And just getting comfortable, making them in your own way. So for me, I love kitchery, it’s a one pot meal and I make it almost every week. Another one I make all the time is the Dartmouth kale salad. And so I also make a lot of bowls because they’re easy. Like today I had a bowl with brown rice and black beans and cooked kale and micro greens. And so it’s a very individual thing, Jill, but I think balancing some of the familiar with a plant based and then branching out and just getting comfortable with cooking a few things so that you don’t feel lost every time dinner rolls around and you don’t feel like, oh my God, when am I going to eat? But in a really practical way, just getting in there and saying, all right, I’m gonna make these recipes.
Kimberly: 12:44 And I’m going to just have these in my arsenal, in my, in my database. The next thing that I think is really important in transitioning is supporting your body. So one of the products that we have that I think is really important to have in these transitions and I’ve given them to my clients during these transitions is Detoxy and this is something you would take in the evening. It’s not a laxative. It’s basically nasal oxygen with vitamin C a stable form of vitamin C and magnesium. And it just helps to clear out the remnants of the old food, the old waste. It helps you release more. It cleanses your system. And I have found time and time again, that the cleaner we help your body become. And the more we support detoxification, there’s a great support towards reducing future food cravings, and also just getting into this new flow.
Kimberly: 13:41 So to sum up Jill, yeah, check out those, uh, plant-based alternatives and try some new recipes and just get comfortable with if few don’t try to, you know, make a million of them, don’t get overwhelmed. Just a few are great. And number three, support your body’s cleansing process with Detoxy. So I hope this helps sending you so much love. I am so grateful for you being in our community. And of course, please continue to reach out to me for any support I can give you.
Thought of the Week
Kimberly: Now, I want to also close with our quote of the week. And this also comes from the new book. You are more than you think you are. This is page one. This is from page 157. This is in the chapter. How to supercharge your vitality and quote is from Paramahansa Yogananda, the great yoga guru who brought yoga to the west. And he says, “The greater the will, the more limitless is the supply of energy in the body.” So in this case, Jill, we wanna direct more of our will. More of our focus, more of our energy into nurturing this transition and the dividends it will pay for you later are going to be limitless in terms of increased vitality, brightness, glow, energy, clarity, better digestion, an easier time, maintaining your weight in a million things. So now is the time to hone that beautiful energy and focus of yours for many, many dividends as time goes on. So thank you so much. My loves for being here. Remember to check out the show notes over at mysolluna.com for links to recipes, meditations, and other podcasts. I think you would enjoy sending you so much love and so much gratitude and see you back here Monday for our next interview podcast.
