STUDIES AND RESEARCH
In 2006, a study published in Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience examined the neural mechanisms behind intuitive decision-making, particularly during perceptual discovery. The research studied how the brain processes nonconscious information and found that the anterior insula and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex are activated during intuitive judgments, suggesting a neural basis for intuition. It also found that understanding the neural underpinnings of intuition can enhance decision-making strategies in various fields, including education, business, and clinical settings, by acknowledging the role of subconscious processes.
A 2024 study published in the Journal of Psychology and Cognition examined how intuition shapes human perception and relationships, influencing decision-making, social interactions, and emotional connections. The research highlighted the subconscious nature of intuition, showing how the brain processes vast amounts of sensory information, past experiences, and emotional states to form judgments rapidly—often without conscious reasoning.
A 2016 study in the Journal of Frontiers and Science examined the dangers of ignoring intuition in relationships, emphasizing how failing to trust one’s gut feelings can lead to emotional distress, depression, unhealthy dynamics, and a loss of self-trust. The article explores how intuition serves as an internal warning system, offering subtle but significant cues about potential relationship issues before they fully manifest.
A 2020 Research Study in the Journal of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences found that individuals who trust their intuition when making romantic decisions tend to have more fulfilling and successful relationships. This suggests that there is a deeper intelligence at play beyond logical reasoning.

Hi everyone and welcome back to our Thursday Q &A show. Today we’re going to be talking about our lovely skin and specifically the holistic approach to creating radiant skin. Since I started on my wellness journey now almost 15 years ago, skin was one of the things that I was really interested in improving in myself. I had acne, I had extra oiliness. I always seem to have a lot of issues with my skin. And of course today, most of us also care about glowing skin and evenness and warding off lines and wrinkles. And it’s a really interesting topic because our skin is this delineation between so-called the rest of the world and our energy inside of us.
Although we know with heart coherence that our heart’s energy expands beyond the physical body, but our skin is on the surface and it’s very much affected by our four corners stone lifestyle. As we’ll get into in today’s show, how we eat, how we take care of our physical body, as well as our emotions, because things like stress can really show up on our skin. It can very much age our skin and how much we’re in touch with our
essence, our spiritual growth really pours out of us in radiance that I believe truly nourishes our skin and creates this glow that you can’t just paint on with makeup and skin products. Everything works together. And I’m really excited about our topic today because this is topic that I’m very passionate about. But before we go deeper, a reminder to please leave us a review wherever you happen to listen to our show. Could be Apple, could be Spotify, wherever.
It’s an amazing way to support, could be one sentence long, but I just thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for taking a moment to do so. It really helps to support the show. It helps other open souls and hearts find this information. Please also pass the show on to anyone that you think would benefit as another way to share the love. If you head over to mysaluna.com, which means the sun and the moon, my, S-O-L-L-U-N-A.com.

You’ll find a place where you can join our newsletter and I highly encourage you to do so if you haven’t yet already. That way you can keep up with our articles, our community gatherings. We just had a free event last week online to join as a community and do the Heart Align meditation together. We also put out recipes every month. It’s a really great thing to join, so I encourage you to do that. Also, quick reminder, if you haven’t yet checked out the new book, The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts,
It’s out now both in soft hard copies as well as audio. read the book myself, of course. Anyone else read it, but from my own heart. Okay. Let’s get going with today’s show about this holistic approach to vibrant skin. And I’d like to remind you that your skin is your largest organ. It is a mix of different energies and the ways in which we take care of it.
And Casey from Florida, our question from the day, comes from this beautiful Casey. Thank you so much for bringing this to our awareness. Writes, hello Kimberly, glad you’re okay with all the fires. I’m back on the podcast. Thank you so much. I’ve been trying to improve my skin as I get self-conscious about it. Is there anything I can do holistically to help improve my skin?
So yes, Casey, there is a lot you can do holistically and just like anything else, it really is a multifaceted approach which will give you the best results. So I remember when I started getting acne way back in high school, my friends were doing retinols and some people were doing more drastic measures and taking pharmaceuticals to so-called help balance their hormones.
and do other things for their acne and skin problems. And their, you know, one friend had excess sweating and she was put on birth control. So our approach here at Saluna is to realize that just like everything else, our skin has a natural state of balance and wholeness. And when we start to live more holistically, not only does our energy start to balance on the inside, we start to feel more calm and grounded.
Kimberly Snyder (04:38.53)
but we start to feel that balance. We see it in our skin. We feel it in our gut microbiome and deep inside our bodies and we can feel this expansion through our heart. Everything very much works together. And I remember on my journey, it was really this holistic approach that helped my skin get a lot better, which we’ll dive into in just a moment. But I remember just feeling…
how surprising, surprised at how much I could just glide through life without having to constantly, you know, pick up my zits and wear so much cover up because I was so embarrassed by my acne. And really society today is so worried about aging and premature lines and wrinkles. And of course we’re all blossoming into new phases of life.
but it’s my personal experience that we can regenerate our collagen and have such incredible skin, even in to, you know, 30s, 40s, 60s, 70s. And in many cases look better than when we did in our 20s, because we also have a much deeper sense of connection to the true self. But I’m also talking about on a physical level, I definitely feel like my skin now is better than in my teens.
on many levels. There’s more smoothness. It feels like my pores look better. I definitely have more of a glow. I don’t have the same oil and acne imbalances. So we can all work to improve and what I call more youthful vitality. This life force which runs through us can run through all our organs, all our cells, including our skin. So there’s research that backs this up. A comprehensive review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology
found that modifying lifestyle factors such as diet, stress management, and sleep quality plays a critical role in modulating the onset and progression of skin disease. So here they’re talking about actual skin disease, skin cancers, illnesses, but on the scale, right? Like that’s the extreme is having an actual disease. The scale is the healthfulness and the vitality that comes.
Kimberly Snyder (07:00.568)
which is also very much promoted by these lifestyle factors. So now let’s dive right in into our Four Cornerstone approach, which we’ll start with food, then we’ll go to body, then we’ll go to emotional wellbeing and spiritual growth. And the thing that connects all of these cornerstones is heart-led living. And what I mean by that is being connected to our true self, being connected to the guidance and wisdom and power in our hearts, which will also allow us
to move forward with sincerity, to have intuition about what specific foods at what specific times can serve us when something feels off in our body. And maybe we need to pay more attention to our digestion or modify our exercise or sleep routine or whatever it is. So none of us are robots. We’re not all the same being, right? So we need our heart’s guidance to guide us through, to take our Four Quarterstones to an even deeper level.
That being said, let’s talk about nutrition in skin health. And it’s amazing what plant foods can do, which are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. There was a 15 year study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, which was published in 2021. And it found the relationship between taking in antioxidants through food and skin aging.
And what it found was a diet rich in antioxidants helped to protect the skin’s aging, including against photo aging from sun damage, UV-induced sun damage, and other forms of oxidative stress. So back to our food philosophy, which is rooted in four key words, fresh, colorful, whole, and simple. Okay?
show when we eat colorful foods and I’m talking about naturally colorful foods. We just did a show recently on food dyes which is really scary. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry and it’s correlated with everything from ADHD to even cancer. We’ll link to it in the show notes if you missed it. It’s a great one to be aware of as well. So we want all these natural colors. We want our food to be as fresh as possible. So it too has its maximum potency and life force running through it which will impart to you.
Kimberly Snyder (09:21.844)
And we want to make sure that there’s this wholeness to the foods that we choose so that they are not fragmented, over-processed, and of course, simple for our digestion. So we could try even more mono-eating, right? Eating a bowl of blueberries or having this, you know, not exactly mono-eating, but the glowing green smoothie with the glowing greens powder added in, which is a simple mix of greens, water, and fruit, right? We want to simplify our dinner. Maybe we have a big salad.
with a lentil veggie soup. That’s what we have a lot for dinner and rice or veggies and some tempeh and salad, whatever it is, just simplifying your diet to maximize your digestion. Some key foods as well I wanna call out are berries. Blueberries are one of my favorite foods. I mentioned them organically because at…
There are rounds a lot in our house, just berries in general. We love acai. My kids love strawberries and raspberries, goji berries. All these berries are really high in vitamin C, which as you can imagine is really, really potent for beautiful skin, polyphenols that promote collagen production. So I encourage you to keep berries in your regular grocery shopping rotation. And you can look for ones that look the freshest and the most seasonal, of course.
Dark, leafy greens like spinach and kale, can make our Dharmas kale salad. There’s greens in our Glow-in-Green smoothie, as I just mentioned, are packed with beta-carotene and lutein. Nuts and seeds like almonds and sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E to protect against UV damage. I love seed and nut crackers. There’s a brand that’s becoming more increasingly popular called The Humble Seed, and also Mary’s Gone Crackers. To me, that’s a great way to get.
seeds and nuts into your diet through a cracker form. My kids love to dip them in Kite Hill cream cheese. And so that’s, you know, thinking about the practical ways in which we snack or eat and how we can bring these power foods into our daily habits. Green tea is also really great for fighting inflammation and oxidative stress, particularly matcha. Tomatoes, which high in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant to help protect against sun damage.
Kimberly Snyder (11:39.222)
And one of my favorites, dark chocolate, cacao, as we say in our family, we grow cacao in Hawaii. And there is actually research around how plant foods can slow aging because of their antioxidants like polyphenols and isoflavones. This was in a 2024 study in the Journal of Foods. Plant foods have fiber. They help to have a higher bioavailability of essential nutrients. So taking…
Supplements is great. You can, of course, take a vitamin C pill. But when we eat the foods in their whole forms, lemon juice, hot water with lemon has always been a core part of our lifestyle. For example, we’re able to really attune with nature and nature’s way of getting these foods into our system.
There’s also really papaya is great, again, full of vitamin C, which is great for supporting collagen and helping to reduce wrinkles. We have so many recipes on our website, mysaluna.com, and we’re putting out recipes every month. So if you’re looking for ideas, again, I encourage you to check out the recipes, get on our newsletter list, and start cooking these really simple, flavorful, healthy, fresh foods for yourself.
It’s also really important to have healthy fats. If our diet doesn’t have enough natural fats and oils, our skins can start to look withered, it can start to look dehydrated. So you wanna make sure that you’re getting avocados, walnuts in, which are full of omega-3s, olives, extra virgin olive oil. I also love coconuts, chia seeds a lot. I also think hydration is really important. You hear me talk about hydration quite a bit on the show.
making sure you’re getting all the beautiful room temperature water in and herbal teas, right? So just drinking a lot, which is so important for having that supple skin. And now there’s also certain adaptogens and herbs, which are really great for skin health. And a 2024 multi-center trial study in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that plant-based adaptogens really helped to improve
Kimberly Snyder (13:58.168)
dullness, texture, pore size, helped with resilience and homeostasis in your skin. So there’s a couple I want to call out here. One is ashwagandha, which can help to balance hormones and help to reduce stress, even reduce the appearance of wrinkles. And one of my favorites of all time, amalaki. Amalaki is the star ingredient in our glowing greens powder. I have this powder every single day. You can put it in your GGS.
You can also just mix it in water and have a little, pour it in a little jar and drink it down. I’ve actually been drinking it twice a day because it’s so cleansing of heavy metals as well, which is really important for skin health. Because the fires were around my area and let’s face it, we live in a polluted world in general. We wanna constantly cleanse heavy metals from our system because they bioaccumulate, they age us, they weigh us down. With the fires, there was a lot of airborne
contaminants, shall we say. But in general, we live in this polluted world. So these powerful plants, there’s also chlorella and spirulina in our formula, along with amalachee, which is known as the main racine or rejuvenative herb. These are ways in which we can really intentionally put plants in to build our skin and our beauty and our energy regularly. There’s also a holy basil known as Tulsi, which has anti-inflammatory properties.
Tulsi tea is one I have in my cabinet almost all the time. It’s really easy to get it in in a tea form. Reishi mushroom has also been shown in some research to contain antioxidants to slow the signs of aging. So you can look for Reishi in different products. Sometimes there’s even mushroom chocolate, mushroom coffee, lots of creative uses for mushrooms these days. And chamomile has soothing properties which are really great for
cell regeneration, which I also like to get in a tea form as well. Aloe vera is something you can drink in a juice form. It’s really great for soothing your GI tract. It’s also really great for skin health from the inside out. And of course, if you have a burn, you can apply it topically. We actually have quite a bit of aloe vera, which grows here on our lands in Los Angeles. And I’ve actually just taken it and cut it and put it on. If my kids get a burn, it’s so soothing. It’s just amazing.
Kimberly Snyder (16:19.374)
these natural plants and working with the plants feels You know just we’re connecting to this power nature this power inside of us However, we do it right ingesting the plants keeping plants around growing your own herbs These are practices that are very simple But I think aligns us with nature and brings this incredible energy through our lives We even did a Q &A show a while ago
about there was research that having house plants around helped to combat depression and made people happier, right? So no matter where we go, no matter what we do, we’re definitely so connected with nature that we can’t get away from that.
Okay, so let’s talk about our next cornerstone, which is body, right? So skin is, our physical skin is part of our body. And so we want to take care of our physical body in a more holistic way, not just applying skincare on. And by the way, I love vitamin C serum. We have an amazing feel good saloon, vitamin C serum, which I wear every single day. It’s made of stable vitamin C. I believe in skincare.
but also I’m talking about, first of all here, gut health. I learned this years ago. If I got my bloating under control and also my constipation, because let me tell you, I was only going to the bathroom a few times a week. I was holding in so much matter that it was starting to come out of my skin in the form of acne, right? Because our skin is an eliminative organ. So your skin will show the level of toxicity in your body. If you’re experiencing dullness,
If you see even sort of dullness in your eyes, in your face, in your complexion, you wanna cleanse your blood and your GI tract and they are related. As you cleanse your colon, for example, blood is flowing through there all the time. It’s gonna pick up less toxins. So it’s almost like cleaning your GI tract is the beginning of the traffic jam. I talked about this all the way back in the Beauty Detox Solution.
Kimberly Snyder (18:27.552)
And I still live these principles to this day, 13, 14 years later from when that book was published. You clean your GI tract regularly. You need to eat fiber to do that, right? Fermented veggies are really great, like sauerkraut. I used to have a lot of sauerkraut recipes. Today, I do buy raw sauerkraut. I, to be honest, don’t have the time to make it as much, but also taking our SBO probiotic formula.
There’s different strains. These are resident forming strains. It’s what we do long term as well. So you need to eat fermented foods regularly, not just once in a while or you eat them a couple of times and then you forget. You can’t just take probiotics or SBO probiotics a month or two and then stop. I’m talking about having great skin long term. You need to stay on the SBO probiotics long term. It’s a real investment in your skin and in your health.
I also take the detoxing all the time to cleanse my system at night. Again, not just a month or two, but year in and year out, right? Every season, every week I’m taking detoxing and the digestive enzymes. I don’t think you need to take a lot. I don’t think you need to have a really complicated schedule of all the things and all the biohacking, but I do think the things that you stay on.
should be done regularly, which for me, the SBO probiotics, I mentioned the detoxi, the glowing greens powder, walking regularly, right? These are protocols that are part of a long-term lifestyle. This is not a fat approach. We don’t want to just have our skin great for a year or two, but for decades. So we need to do the protocols that work for decades as well.
And there was a research study in 2018 in the Journal of Microbiology that found that the gut microbiomes contributed to the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases, including acne, psoriasis. There was so much of a connection between your gut health and your skin. The research I will link to in the show notes. There’s so much here. I won’t list all of it, but I’ll link to all of it. The 2023 study in the Journal of Nutrients.
Kimberly Snyder (20:45.816)
found that you can improve your skin health by modulating your gut microbiome. Bottom line, if you don’t have a healthy gut, you’re not gonna have radiant skin. It’s like fighting against the truth that’s inside of you or, you know, trying to spray for breeze or a really bad smelling bathroom. You need to clean out and cleanse on a deeper level. And then it just feels great. You feel lighter, right?
And everything just looks authentically glowing. So besides gut health, in our body cornerstone, we need to get adequate sleep. There’s so much research around this as well, research I’ll link to. Quality sleep will show up on your skin. So one of the things I recommend is going to bed and waking at regular times, having an evening routine so you don’t just try to go from being up, having really intense conversations or watching crime shows.
and then trying to sleep right away, right? We need to soothe ourselves like I do my children. So reading time, little bit of self massage, ideally your heart aligned meditation, drinking one of our amazing sleep elixir recipes. These are all ways in which I consistently have an evening routine. And guess what? My sleep is so much better than it used to be. I used to have really patchy sleep. It used to take me a long time to fall asleep and now
I rest really well and this is an amazing gift to give yourself and your family. You’ll be in a better mood and yes, your skin will look better.
We also want to monitor our environment, our immediate environment for skin health. There’s a lot of pollutants out there. There was a review published in the current Environmentally Health Reports showing that air pollution was correlated with premature skin aging. So you want to make sure to check your indoor air pollution, get some really high quality air filters, and just keep your space as clean as possible. Clean your…
Kimberly Snyder (22:52.332)
cleaning products, get rid of that Febreze I mentioned before, use more natural products and really just keep your environment as clean as possible in general. And also we mentioned natural skincare. It’s really important to have really quality products. I mentioned the vitamin C serum. We also have an amazing moisturizer if you’re interested in it, which has
a botanical version of retinol. So it helps to promote skin healing. I’m a big believer in botanicals. That’s what I use on my skin. And I think that these plants can really power up your skin without the, know, sort of the pharmacist, just the, I don’t want to speak negatively of all synthetic materials, but I know that certain ones,
can have a lot of artificial fragrances, for example, and ingredients that can actually break down the collagen in your lips and your skin long term. So I believe in the power of nature and botanical based skincare, which is non-toxic as well as high performance, but of course changes brand to brand. So make sure that you really check out the intentions, the ethos and the trust in each brand on a case by case basis because marketing can be very
tricky. Okay, so our third cornerstone is emotional well-being. And within the emotional well-being cornerstone, I like to talk about stress because stress is the opposite of being emotionally well, right? Stress is when we start to feel this build up. There’s a lot of resistance to what’s going on. We don’t feel good. We feel irritated a lot of the time. We start to feel very
I’m frustrated with life and how things are going. And let’s face it, so much is out of our control. So the opposite of being stressed is to being centered and just being able to flow along with life. And this has an impact on our hormones. We can elevate our DHEA, lower our cortisol. And I talked about this on a recent podcast as well. I recently got a blood test done and I was so happy to see that my DHEA levels
Kimberly Snyder (25:15.342)
were really great. They were the levels of an 18 to 22 year old woman. And the rest of my hormones were also really balanced, including my testosterone, estrogen, and so on. And that’s, I believe, because of my ability to all of this, eat healthy, have a clean environment, but also manage stress. And the main ways in which I do that is through heart coherence and our heart aligned meditation. When we’re really in our heads a lot, we’re just…
identified with thoughts and feelings and the outer world that we don’t control. And there can be a lot of fear. But it’s my personal experience as we center into the wisdom of our hearts and our heart brains, which do have 40,000 neurons, we can start to feel so much more grounded in our lives. And what this translates to is more emotional resilience and stability and a more broad perspective where we can find solutions and navigate challenges.
So in this regard, I do recommend reading The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts, checking out the tools that I share there on heart coherence. And one of them is the heart-aligned meditation, which now segues into our spiritual growth cornerstone. But really, this meditation is for all of our cornerstones. It affects our body. It increases our intuition, including with intuitive eating. It helps us to feel more emotional stability and intelligence, as I just mentioned.
and to put us in touch with our true self. So you may say, well, what does spirituality have to do with skin health? And I’ll tell you, the more we’re in touch with our wholeness, which we can experience in our hearts and past the surface of life into this essence, this energy inside of us, it starts to come forward. We start to feel more confident. We start to make better choices, including again, in our food choices, we start to deepen our relationships. There’s less drama.
There’s less stress. So we do become more radiant. Our skin starts to glow because the energy within is starting to come up and out. And again, there’s a lot of research around the cornerstones to really support this. This isn’t just, you know, hearsay. This isn’t just spiritual jargon. It’s my truth that I’ve experienced personally and with so many clients and readers, everything works together.
Kimberly Snyder (27:40.6)
So the more we’re in touch with this deeper part of us, we feel so much more expansive, whole, less stressed and more radiant. And that radiance pours up and out. This isn’t something that we can just buy or manufacture or paint on with shimmery makeup. It’s the totality of our lifestyle, which creates this really powerful vibration that can be felt by others as we feel it within ourselves.
So, back to the total heart-led living across the Four Cornerstones lifestyle. Let’s do a little review. Food-wise, fresh, simple, whole and colorful. Have lots of berries, healthy fats like avocados and nuts, and a wide variety of amazing plant foods with fiber, including dark leafy greens, including the Glowing Greens smoothie with power plants like amalaki and chlorella and spirulina in the Glowing Greens powder.
Body-wise, nourish your gut, eat fermented foods, eat more fiber, avoid processed foods and sugars, and try our amazing supplements. You don’t need a lot, but check out the SBO Probiotics. We’re not trying to market big culture counts. We’re not trying to mass produce a billion supplements. I only take a few. I take the ones that I share with you, detoxi, to cleanse your system and the digestive enzymes. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep.
regulate your sleep rhythms, as well as cleaning your environmental space. Ditch those crappy cleaning products and all the scented candles and all the, you know, room sprays and get some good air filters. And number four, not number four, number three, emotional wellbeing. Have tools right here, right in front of you that you can lean into for stress resilience.
such as the heart coherence tools, such as the heart align propelled in life, harmonized with life, heart aligns steady in life. Sorry, I’m getting so excited as I talk about the book. In the propelled heart chapter in steady hearts and the devoted heart, there’s so many tools in the book. So please check out the book in general, The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts and learn how you can use this other brain, your heart brain.
Kimberly Snyder (30:05.314)
to regulate your mind and its crazy thoughts and stories and narratives so that you just feel so much centered in your life. And fourthly, spiritual growth. Tune in to the true self. Realize that this physical world is not all there is. And there’s much more to creating beautiful, healthy skin than just physical-ness, right? Physical makeup and so on. We want this aliveness, this youthful vitality to course through
every cell of our being and every part of our blood and all of our organs and tissues and to come into our largest organ, which is our skin. We do that by the heart aligned meditation as well as these incredible berries and foods. Remember your total lifestyle is going to make up your total results. How you feel, how you look and your daily life experience, including the health and vibrancy of your skin. So,
Remember, I have so many of these amazing offerings for you. I’m writing every day. I just rewrote our four cornerstones download, which we’ll be offering soon. It’s completely rewritten and updated. I’ll announce it when it comes out. It’s gonna be an ebook that’s on our website, a free ebook. Please check out the recipes. Please get on the newsletter. Remember, you can ask me questions for upcoming shows as well at mysaloona.com.
I thank you in advance for leaving a review. It really means the world, so thank you so much. I’m also on social at at underscore Kimberly Snyder.
