Topic: The Gut-Heart Connection
I hope you’re having a lovely week and a lovely period around the holidays and as we come into the New Year, there’s a real window right now. I feel like this portal of time as we step into the new year to really deeply consider shifts we wanna make and to deepen our understanding of the powerful aspects of our lifestyle. Solluna is all about our four cornerstones and we’re going to be talking about the gut heart connection and the role of probiotics. So I’ve been talking about gut health for many years. Those of you that have been with me since The Beauty Detox Solution, which was published back in 2011, will recall I was talking about digestion before a lot of people were. And this was from a really organic way of trying to figure out how to deal with my bloating and my acne and my extreme anxiety and insomnia. And what I really came to understand was how important the gut is. And to this day, I still focus on digestion and gut health as we have expanded to include the heart as a brain center.

STUDIES AND RESEARCH
Microbiome and Cardiovascular Disease:
A 2021 Study In the National Library of Medicine highlighted how gut microbiota contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases through mechanisms involving inflammation, metabolism, and immune function. Elevated levels of TMAO produced by gut bacteria are linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
Inflammation and Heart Disease:
A 2014 Study in the Journal of Circulation Research found that Gut microbiota-dependent trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) pathway contributes to both development of renal insufficiency and mortality risk in chronic kidney disease The study demonstrated that higher plasma levels of TMAO are associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, suggesting a direct link between gut microbiota-derived metabolites and heart disease.
Cholesterol Metabolism:
A 2014 Study in the Journal of Gastroenterology explored how gut microbiota influence bile acid metabolism and cholesterol homeostasis. It shows the potential therapeutic implications of modulating gut bacteria to manage cholesterol levels and reduce cardiovascular risk.
Inflammation and Blood Pressure:
A 2017 Study in the Nefrologia Journal reviewed the role of the immune system and inflammation in the development and maintenance of hypertension. It highlighted how pro-inflammatory cytokines and immune cell infiltration in the kidneys and vasculature contribute to high blood pressure.
Probiotics and Inflammation:
A 2007 Study in the Journal of Gut Microbes studied the anti-inflammatory effects of probiotics, highlighting their potential to reduce systemic inflammation and benefit conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and possibly cardiovascular disease through gut health improvement.
Probiotics and Heart Health (Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels):
A 2016 Study in the American Society for Microbiology concluded that the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum can lower TMAO levels and reduce atherosclerosis in animal models by modulating bile acid metabolism, suggesting a direct benefit of probiotics on heart health.
Probiotics and Cholesterol:
A 2016 Study in the Journal of American Pharmacists followed various clinical trials showing that specific probiotic strains can reduce serum cholesterol levels. It mentions mechanisms such as bile salt hydrolase activity and cholesterol assimilation by probiotics.
Probiotics and Blood Pressure:
A 2014 Study in the Journal of Hypertension found that a meta-analysis of nine randomized controlled trials suggests that probiotic consumption significantly reduces blood pressure, particularly in hypertensive subjects, likely due to improved gut microbiota composition and SCFA producti

Hello everyone and welcome back to our Thursday Q &A show. I hope you’re having a lovely week and a lovely period right now around the holidays and as we come into New Year’s, there’s a real window right now. I feel like this portal of time as we step into the new year to really deeply consider shifts we wanna make and to deepen our understanding of the powerful aspects of our lifestyle, which is what of course our show is all about. Solluna is all about these four cornerstones. And today we’re going to be talking about understanding the gut heart connection and the role of probiotics. So I’ve been talking about gut health for many years. Those of you that have been with me since the beauty detox solution, which was published back in 2011, will recall I was talking about digestion before a lot of people were.
And this was from this seeking, this really organic way of crying out and trying to figure out how to deal with my bloating and my acne and my waking and my extreme anxiety and insomnia. And I really came to understand how important the gut is. And to this day, I really focus on digestion and gut health. And what’s really interesting as the work has expanded and now the new book, The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts, focuses so much on the power of our heart.
both as a heart brain, a physical center that’s so much more than we ever realized, the energetic and the spiritual heart, and how the heart helps to calm the thoughts up in the brain, up in the mind, up here. But what is really powerful, how we can really benefit from this knowledge, is how the three brains work together. Now we’re tying it into this wholism.
which is where we get the best results in our energy, in our creativity, in our flow states, in our focus, in our physical beauty and health. It’s the gut brain, the heart brain, and the brain up in your head. And I didn’t get this for a really long time, and now the work is so beautifully tying it together. And today we’re gonna focus specifically on how your gut can help with the heart.
Kimberly Snyder (02:19.446)
awaken into more peace, into more creativity and vitality, and in turn also start to calm and settle what I call the wild horse mind, the brain, which is so useful and important, but needs to be harnessed. It needs to be grounded. Otherwise we fall into self-doubt, fear, chaos, which raises cortisol levels, which breaks down our body. And these are not things that we can just achieve from exercise.
We can’t just achieve them from eating healthy. We have to understand how to really take care of our microbiome, which involves supplements. The Espio supplements from Saluna are very powerful. I take them every day. There’s also detoxing, other ones you don’t need a lot, but you do need, we do need to talk about how important gut health is. And yes, fiber is important, adequate water is important.
to really help promote detoxification, other things. But this is such an important conversation because now in our heart-led living journey, we’re really tying together these two brains and then the third brain as well. So I’m very excited about this topic, if you can’t tell. Before we dive in, little reminder. First of all, please share the show with anyone you think would benefit. Sometimes we get so excited, we get a lot of great comments.
A way you can support is to share the show. You can send a screen grab, you can share an episode to someone, you can also write a review. All these ways keep the show going and so I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love to share and this is how you can also really help support. And also our two day at home heart retreat is being conducted in January. This is a chance to tap into this research and the tools around the heart and to direct it so that you have the most incredible heart led
year forward. So instead of resolutions coming and going, we’re able to use these tools, the Heart Aligned Meditation for New Year’s, journaling prompts, a stretch video, really incredible food recipes to make. So it’s like going on a vision quest, which you can do from your home. You don’t have to get on a plane. And I look forward to being on the retreat with you. All the information is at mysalina.com. All right, our question today comes all the way from London from Sandy. Sandy, thank you so much.
Kimberly Snyder (04:40.292)
We love to be connected. Time and space do not hold our community back. We are many countries around the world. You write, Kimberly, I love your new book so much. It has changed my life. I was thinking about starting to take probiotics and I wanted to ask you if it would help with inflammation as I have elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure. So again, thank you so much Sandy for bringing this to our attention.
So the three brains is something we’re gonna be talking about more in detail at Saluna. I’m gonna be writing more articles about this. It’s really amazing. As you start to awaken to this perspective, how much you see this really makes sense and it ties together. So we’ve heard a lot about the gut being another brain. Now we realize that there’s neurotransmitters in our gut.
that regulate a huge part in immunity. Also the vagus nerve, which goes from the gut up to the brain. There’s so much in this intelligence in the gut, which would be known as the Manipura Chakra in yoga, right? There’s this energy center in the gut. And the more we’re able to digest better our food, we’re able to digest life. It means we rise into our personal power.
So the gut is known as the seat of personal power where we can express and we can get our needs met, we can create what we want, we can use this very important quality what Paramahansa Yogananda calls will. We direct our will, we turn our thoughts and our unseen hopes and desires into actual manifestations in the world. So there’s a lot of strength that comes from a healthy gut.
There’s also research that backs this up. I’m gonna go into some of the research in a moment. But again, this plumb line or through line, you go up the spine from the gut into this really central point. We could call the heart the first brain because it forms first in the fetus. There is a heartbeat. There’s a directive intelligence coming from the heart before the brain is even formed. And from this inner power center, 40,000 neurons, which sends more messages to the brain up in our head than vice versa.
Kimberly Snyder (06:58.904)
we’re able to create what’s known as heart coherence, which is a syncing up of the heart, the brain, and the nervous system. And the nervous system can be very, it influences our gut a lot, it influences our digestion. So when we’re in fight or flight, digestion usually gets shut down or slowed down. It could be a huge cause of bloating and indigestion, right? And so there’s this real,
grounding-ness which comes when our hearts are awakened more and more. We start to transcend being so tossed in the waves of everyday thoughts, the smallness that can come in from self-doubt comparisons and this is very powerful for our guts. then we go up to the brain and the brain is so important as well but where the ego lies in the mind if the brain isn’t harnessed to the heart
What happens is we think thousands of untrue thoughts a day, circular thinking, we ruminate, we stew, we waste a lot of energy, we buy into stories and narratives like we’re not good enough, that we don’t measure up. So it all really works together. And when it does, we become this well-oiled machine. We become so powerful. And in the most gentle, loving, kind ways, it’s not gonna look like having to push people over or being so forceful.
This is the real type of power which comes from inner alignment. And so today let’s talk specifically about the heart and the gut. So this is also physical. There’s a physicality to the heart and the gut. There’s also the energetic and the spiritual. Again, the gut is the Manipura chakra personal power. The heart is the Anahata chakra, this loving kindness, this expansiveness. We think about this energy emanating from the sacred heart of Jesus Christ.
This ultimate, know, unconditional love, this ultimate forgiveness, this ultimate do unto the name as your neighbor, to your neighbor as you would have done unto yourself. Right. So imagine harnessing your personal power with your heart. Now this is sustained personal power. This is power in the real way where we can create people to get behind our projects. We create unity, not from the
Kimberly Snyder (09:23.492)
pushing place, which is unsustainable and shaky, but from this place of deep love and wisdom and embodied strength. A 2021 study in the National Library of Medicine found how the gut microbiota contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease through mechanisms involving inflammation, metabolism, and immune function. So when our guts are healthy on a physical level,
We’re able to protect our so important hearts, right? We know that cardiovascular incidences, heart attacks, strokes, so on and so forth, really are so prevalent in the world today. And we think about heart healthy foods, we think about eating healthy fats, but also how we eat and how we live, taking care of our gut, again, taking your SBO probiotics, eating fiber are really important.
for your heart function as well. And sometimes we don’t make that distinction because we think in terms of separatism or fragmentation, I do this for my skin, I do this for my liver, I do this for my heart, but there’s this synergy when we start to see things in terms of these three brains. when the things that disable our gut, sugar, stress, know, toxicity in the water supply,
There’s a million different things, all the food chemicals, processed foods. We create a weakening effect through this plumb line, through the inner system. And so by strengthening the gut. So I take these, again, I can’t share how much I’m excited about this formula. It’s one of the, it’s pretty much the only thing I always take because our gut is so sensitive and it can get wiped out. We need to build this inner strength.
to create strength through our expression, through our health, resiliency against accelerated aging. So back to nature, right? I think by nature, we’re meant to be strong and resilient. By nature, we are meant to be more heart-based versus ego-based or mind-based as part of the corruption of being in a separatist society, but back to our true nature. And our true nature when it comes to our gut health is to live off the land.
Kimberly Snyder (11:49.602)
and to grow our own food, right? Before cities came up in modern culture. So our ancestors ate a little bit of the soil every day from unwashed fruits and vegetables. I do it in Hawaii. I pick guavas off our trees. I eat off the ground all the time. And there is probiotics. There’s healthy bacteria in the soil, and healthy soil, of course, that comes in. And it’s not just made on man-made calculations.
Sort of like, you know, January 1st is this man-made holiday. There’s a naturalness from the soil. There’s a naturalness in consuming probiotics in these perfect ratios and strains. And the strength of it survives your stomach acid. So sometimes we get caught up in the numbers. Sometimes we get caught up in protein grams and wanting to have all these processed protein bars. Sometimes we choose probiotics because we see these shiny labels, really high culture counts. Guess what?
Sometimes in these formulas, they’re not hearty, they’re not resistant, they can get wiped out by your stomach acid, right? Or they’re just not the right strains that your body needs. So we wanna look through the lens of this natural strengthening, the natural vitality and how attuned we are to nature. Our guts are very, you know, just intelligent and there’s trillions of different bacteria in there and there’s this incredible ratio.
which can’t just be deduced down in simplicity in labs. So what I love about, know, SBO, soil-based organism formulas is that it’s really taking this intelligence from soil. And when you take these supplements, it’s the closest you can get to eating the soil and to going back to our natural integrity. Now let’s talk about inflammation for a moment. We just did another show about inflammation because it’s such a big topic. When we are inflamed, our body is reacting.
It takes a lot of energy and it’s a lot of, know, just this, think about a fire that’s getting out of control. It creates a lot of damage in our system. And a 2014 study in the Journal of Circulation Research found that gut, and this is where it gets a little bit technical, but remember all these show notes are at mysaloonit.com if you want to read the research yourself. The gut microbiota dependent.
Kimberly Snyder (14:07.81)
TNX oxide pathway contributes both to renal insufficiency and mortality risk. So when there’s higher plasma levels of TMAO, it’s associated with cardiovascular events, heart disease, and it has to go down, it goes down to the gut microbiota. Now it’s interesting when we realize how much is really dependent on great, really great gut health, including things we might not realize or not even think about. Today we’re talking about
heart health, both when the physical heart is really healthy, it helps with the energetic and spiritual heart. All the illness, all the different diseases are distractions, aren’t they? When we have aches and pains, when we’re caught up in all these different illnesses, some of this is for our growth, we’re to grow past them, we’re meant to rise up to these challenges. But when we can prevent these illnesses,
because we take care of our lifestyle, we’re taking care of our gut health, we’re eating a whole food-based diet largely, we’re taking care of stress, we’re using tools like the Heart Align Meditation, we can really forge our path forward without so much energy going off to the wayside in energy spent on trying to, you know, create a resolution with one issue or another.
So there’s so much power in taking out distraction and getting really clear where we want our energy to go, which is towards our vitality, towards manifesting our creative desires, right? So gut health, gut health. And now we talk about cholesterol metabolism. A 2014 study in the Journal of Gastroenterology found that gut microbiome helped to influence bile acid metabolism, cholesterol homeostasis. Now back to this word of homeostasis and balance.
When we are in these big emotions, anger, frustration, there’s a very real effect on our gut health, right? This comes from the mind. And when there’s homeostasis in our guts, it creates more feelings of coherence and harmony in our hearts and in our mind. Everything works together, especially through the integrated intelligence of these three brains. So we don’t have to understand every single
Kimberly Snyder (16:26.094)
compound every single interaction of all these many strains together, but to understand, zooming out the bigger picture, that when there’s balance, when there’s a healthy microbiome, when your gut health is excellent, things function better, including your heart. There’s regulation through your heart systems. There’s more homeostasis with cholesterol. Inflammation goes down. Another study from 2017 in the Nephrology Journal.
found that the role of the immune system in inflammation is correlated with your gut health. I’m sort of simplifying these terms. It goes into immune cell filtration in the kidneys. It goes into the maintenance of hypertension. So I think of this as like these main, like this plumb line down the middle, right? A brain, heart, gut. And then it goes off into all these side, these channels, right? Your kidneys, your renal function.
kidneys are such an important part of vitality, especially in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. And it’s all influenced. It’s all, you know, taking part. So we may, you know, need to pay special attention to issues and challenges, let’s say in our liver or our kidneys or different parts of us. But I’m a big believer as we strengthen our three brains on a systemic level, we are doing so much.
for our health and our wellness and our vitality. So inflammation doesn’t just damage, it damages the outside, right? If we get a cut, if there’s chronic acute inflammation, we see that. But the long-term chronic inflammation is damaging on so many levels. It can even damage the interlining of our blood vessels, which leads to higher blood pressure. It leads to all these different variety of cardiovascular events.
So again, not anything, you don’t wanna be overly fearful, but we say, you know, I really feel inspired to take care of my gut health. I’m really inspired to take probiotics on an everyday, regular basis as I am, because it’s such a powerful thing to do for your health and wellness. And as you know, if you’ve been a long-term listener of the show or read my books, I don’t recommend spending your money on 50 different pills a month. I don’t think you need to take a lot.
Kimberly Snyder (18:52.088)
but I do believe in certain ones like the SBO probiotics. So let’s talk about now, this is really interesting. I just got blood work done and it’s really wonderful now and I don’t do it all the time, but I do it periodically. And one of the things that you can get measured for in your blood work is C-reactive protein, which is a well-known marker of inflammation. So if you happen to get blood work done while you’re going through some type of infection, you have a virus, bacterial,
Definitely virus. You’ll see a huge spike, which can be quite scary. This is what happened with my husband’s blood work when he took it a couple months ago. Then we did blood work again and it dropped way down. It just shows the body’s intelligence in, you know, going back to that homeostasis state. But if our levels of inflammation are elevated long term, there’s things that we definitely want to look at.
We want to make sure our home environment, our cleaning products, our food, our water, our air is as clean as possible. And we do want to make sure back to our topic today, heart, gut. How do we take care of our heart? How do we take care of our gut? Making sure that our diets are in point. Besides, you know, talking about probiotics, there were so many other shows about talking about fiber, talking about nutrients. A lot of foods that are good for your heart are good for your brain.
And guess what? A lot of foods that are good for your heart are good for your gut. It all works together. So for example, Omega-3 fatty acids are great for your gut. They help, let’s say chia seeds for example, when you soak them, they form soluble and insoluble fiber. They allow for an easier passageway through your GI tract. Omega-3 fats are really great for cardiovascular heart health. And Omega-3 fats are really great for cognitive function.
and combating different disorders like depression. They’re great for your brain. So when you start to eat in these simple, small ways, you can really nourish the three brains. I’ll call out a couple of things, because I love the chia seeds. Certain foods, greens, are really great for all three, especially when you eat them in the most fresh or potent forms, which can include fresh food, a glowing green smoothie.
Kimberly Snyder (21:18.868)
Also how we have the powdered glowing greens powder with amalaki, which is great for heart, gut, brain as well. This is a really wonderful way to take in chlorella, spirulina, some of the other ingredients that we have, which you wouldn’t necessarily eat fresh. But these are the ways our uveic herbs have been administered for thousands of years. There’s a potency in really well crafted high quality powders, which is how you can also consume cacao.
and make hot chocolate, which I’m a huge lover of, right? Cacao is one of those powerful mineral, it contains essential minerals like zinc and magnesium, has these beautiful compounds for enhancing bliss, even has fiber depending on the form that you’re consuming the cacao, energizing without the extra caffeine of coffee. So I’m a huge cacao lover.
Avocado, I mean I could go on and on I won’t get off on a tangent with this show today because we’re really talking about probiotics We’re talking about gut health and heart But just remember one of the core messages of today’s show is that the three brains very much do work together And it’s very powerful when we can really Harness that energy and that power and use it in our own lives So
Let’s see, there’s so much research here. I mean, it goes on and on about the blood pressure again, lowering our blood pressure, improving lipid profiles. All of this is also correlated to heart health and gut health together. I don’t want to get too heady here because it can get very detailed, but I will mention once again that the research for the show is at mysaluna.com. And by the way, if you’ve never thought about it before, if you’ve never
realized it. So Luna means soul, sun and Luna, moon. means this wholeness. And I believe, you know, this power inside of us, whether we’re wanting to create a beautiful family life or more energy or better skin or more material abundance, it’s really dependent on our ability to tap into our wholeness, because wholeness equals abundance, right? Wholeness is abundant. So the sun and moon, all the different cycles, all the different aspects.
Kimberly Snyder (23:38.828)
emotional, the physiological, the mental, the spiritual, physical bodies. So went back to the three brains, this wholeness that comes from nurturing your gut health and then nurturing your heart is so powerful and brings us out of lack and brings us into our true self state where wholeness is who we really are. And I am so passionate about sharing about this with you because I understand what lack feels like.
lack of manifesting, never feeling like you look good enough, that you’ve never done enough, that you could be doing more, that you compare, you find yourself comparing a lot, complaining a lot, judging a lot. It’s okay to see these things with compassion, but then we soften down into a state of realizing a shift needs to be made, we need to change our perspective. And the good news is that these tools really work.
There’s so much research around gut health. There’s so much research around heart coherence. So if I would leave you today with the tools that I use that are very powerful that I’d highly recommend because I’m coming from a place of really sharing, crossing over. I’m still human and I’m on this journey right along with you, but moving from anxiety, bloating, troubles with my weight, never having a flat belly, struggling with my hair.
feeling a lot of comparison, feeling judging of myself and others into so much more silence and inner peace. The core practices remain taking your SBO probiotics every day, having lots of fiber, including in your Glowing Greens smoothie, having power foods, which is why I made the Glowing Greens powder, the Glowing Greens smoothie recipe. So it’s a very efficient way through a smoothie or just adding the powder into water to get into your system.
I also do the heart aligned meditation. If I don’t meditate every day, and this meditation’s only eight minutes, I can feel very off, very much in my head, very much. It’s easy for me to get into rush mode, hurry mode, not doing enough, overthinking. So this groundingness of coming back to the heart and the other heart coherence practices I mentioned in the book have been very powerful for me. Also, just not over scheduling. I think this, you the stress of being
Kimberly Snyder (26:01.54)
you know, on all the time is really detrimental to the gut and to the heart. And then also just lots of time for lightness and love and play with the family, having an evening routine to settle in and ground my body. like warm elixirs, which are really great for your gut as well. Lots of recipes. There’s really special elixir recipe in our at-home heart retreat, again, coming in January. And…
Meditation again in the evening or journaling or just some type of stillness for me is very nourishing. And I understand it can be quite challenging in the midst of busy family life, but I still make that time for myself around my shower. And after everybody’s in bed, I still have some silent time before I go to sleep. Remember, I’m here for you always. There’s so much support that we have for you here at Saluna around each of these buckets.
Again, the cornerstones are food, body, emotional well-being, and spiritual growth. We are coming into this new year with a bang, and the next few months we’ll be launching our new website, which will make things a lot more easier to navigate. Lots of amazing offerings coming, even new branding coming. So we have so much to share with you, and be sure to check out all, especially the new Heart Retreat, everything on the website, mysaloona.com. Keep your questions coming.
I thank you so much in advance for your review of the show, means the world. And I will be back here as always Monday for our next interview show. Till then, sending you all the love from my heart to yours. Namaste. Nam shanti, which means peace. Peace, I wish you more peace this holiday season and beyond.
