Welcome back to our Thursday Q and A podcast, where our topic today is accepting our bodies, As a woman, as a Solluna community member, as somebody who is alive, this is a topic that has probably affected you in some way or another. Even the most confident among us have moments, periods, times in our lives where we beat ourselves up, where it’s easy to displace a lot of anxiety on our bodies. And this of course has a hugely detrimental impact on our lives. So we want to talk today about tips and tools for finally accepting our beautiful, unique bodies that are our temples for taking us through life. This is a very sensitive topic. This is a really, really big one. This is also a personal topic for Katelyn and I who have both had eating disorders and have both really beat our bodies up in the past.

We have our amazing Katelyn on the line with us, our general manager of Solluna, who has been with me on this podcast since the beginning. Hi Kay, good morning.
Katelyn: Good morning. Great to be with you today. I’m really excited about this topic. We were brainstorming several weeks back and this one came up, so I’m glad it’s finally time to record it.
Kimberly: Yes, for sure. I feel that this topic definitely deserves a whole show. I think that when we beat ourselves up in our body, it affects everything from our hormones to our digestion. It impairs our ability to feel our fullest vitality. Everything is so connected. So yeah, Kay, let’s dive right in. Let’s get right into it.
Question 1: How can I stop dwelling so much on what the ideal body shape is, and just be happy with who I am?
Katelyn: Let’s jump in. So the first question is from Carrie and she’s living in Logan, West Virginia.
Katelyn: How can I stop dwelling so much on what the ideal body shape is, and just be happy with who I am? I am recovering from disordered eating and I really beat myself up for not looking the way I feel I should. I feel embarrassed of what others think of me.
Kimberly: Carrie, thank you so much for your question. My heart really goes out to you sister, because I know that feeling. I’ve been there as well. I know what it’s like to be obsessed with body shape and comparisons and feeling bad and even feeling embarrassed about having cellulite, or not having as, for me, it was like my arms. I would look in the mirror all the time. They weren’t as toned or as skinny, and my legs weren’t as skinny.I will say that after years of working with this, working with this condition, this very, very real condition, I will say a couple things. Number one, I think it is important to dial in your diet, which is supportive of how you feel, so you start to feel really good. You’re getting a lot of nutrient dense foods. This is where morning routine is really important.
Kimberly: So you get on a tract, and you know what to do, and it takes out a lot less of the anxiety, and the guessing, and the obsessing about how many calories am I eating, what should I do? I know when you anchor it into a routine, it puts you into a very positive flow. So from the morning, hot water lemon, SBO probiotics, glowing green smoothie and meditation. The meditation part, especially for you, Carrie, is so important because it’s where we connect down into our essence, our breath, our life force, the parts of us that are beneath the surface, which is 99.999% of us, instead of the outside. We live in a world where everything is so image focused. Everything is so on the surface. It’s how do we look? What pictures are we putting up on Instagram? How do I compare to other people at the restaurant?
Kimberly: It’s always outward, outward, outward, so we really have to make the effort to cultivate the inner part of us, which is the third and fourth Solluna cornerstone. We talk about food first, second is body, third is emotional wellbeing, and fourth is spiritual growth. And believe me, beauties, it took me years to really, really get this, that there is this whole inner part of us that affects our weight and affects how we look and it affects everything. I used to think they were separate. So when we take a deep dive into breath work in the morning, even if it’s three minutes or five minutes, and we get into our body, we start to connect deeper. And when we connect to our wholeness and our whole selves, then we don’t just hyper focus on the outside because we start to know that there’s so much more to us.
Kimberly: That’s our real source of worth. Our self worth isn’t based on our weight, which goes up and down, and our skin, which is going to inevitably age and wrinkle to some degree. Our worth is based on our being, on our spirit, on our soul, on the part of us that can never be taken away. I just feel that anchoring into a routine, getting it dialed in is number one, instead of just thrashing around, excuse me, trying all these different diets, all this obsessing and trying to drop weight and doing this and that. And then number two, connecting inwardly and getting into a meditation practice, making sure that you start your day there end your day there in the evening, and that is the beginning of starting to let go of body obsession.
Kimberly: I also think there’s deep roots to all of this and I think introspection is super important. Really understanding what’s triggering you, what’s making you feel really bad, not feeling lovable, not really connecting down and processing that, and these are also topics, we don’t have time to go into it fully right here, but every month we dive deeply in the Soluna circle, which is where we take on a monthly theme. We talk about foods, elixirs practices, there’s audios, videos, recipes, journal prompts. There’s a private community, so that could be really wonderful for you as well, Carrie. It’s really about nurturing our inside, nurturing your spirit, your beautiful, unique soul and this is something we need to do regularly just like we eat healthy food on a regular basis. I think spending time in introspection and meditation every day is the only way out of this.
Kimberly: You’re not going to fix it by trying to look more perfect on the outside. There’s always going to be someone skinny or something else you want to achieve. We heal it from nurturing the inside and being so in touch with ourselves that we see our wholeness and when we see our wholeness, we don’t obsess as much about our body.
Katelyn: Yeah, I couldn’t agree more about talking about this topic. It’s something for me personally I’m going through. This journey has been over 10 years for me, and I’ve recently gained weight and I thought, oh, I was done with that. I was done with the body shame. I was done with feeling these feelings. Then when I happened to gain weight again, I was like, oh no, and I’m going through the journey again. So I think talking about how you are in connection to our four cornerstones is so important because it’s a lifestyle and it’s something that when you do struggle with this, it’s not an instant fix. Right, Kay, we’ve been going through this for a long time.
Kimberly: Totally, yeah. It’s really lifelong Kay, so thank you. Thank you for pointing that out. I do talk about this in the new book, Your Perfectly Imperfect Life, about this is something that we have to keep nurturing probably for the rest of our lives, especially if you’ve gone through disordered eating, especially if you’ve had an eating disorder in the past, like both Katelyn and I. It’s not like, oh, I’m fixed and everything’s okay. I still have to meditate. I still have to check myself sometimes, as you do Kay, and it’s a practice, that’s all I can say is it really is a lifestyle. It’s like how Vedic philosophy, yoga philosophy talks about practice. Dinacharya, daily routine. Just the way that we brush our teeth. Just the way that we have a bedtime routine, our meditation, our nurturing of our spirit is a key, key, key part of this lifestyle. We can’t just eat really well and think that that’s the end all be all. It is really about this lifestyle and as you mentioned, Kay, it should be ongoing as well.
Question 2: Do you have any tips on how to help my mindset so I can start to love myself?
Katelyn: Yeah, and I think that’ll head into Lynn’s question, who is from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Kimberly: Lynn, thank you so much for your question. Thank you for being vulnerable. I also completely empathize with this because there was a period where I was really thin, but I would wear these enormous baggy shirts because I felt like I had gained an ounce or I looked unacceptable and there was a lot of body shame there. So this is of course destructive, and you bring it up, so I know you know this sister, deep down in your heart and you know that this isn’t how we were meant to live. So this is such, this whole topic is really what the last book was all about you guys. So if you haven’t yet checked out Recipes for Your Perfectly Imperfect Life, I mean this is it. This is about body shame. It’s about tips and tools for getting past some of these very detrimental energies, and feelings, and emotions.
Kimberly: One thing that I will say is that we project so much on our bodies because of other parts of our life that aren’t nourished. This is why we talk so much about the emotional and the spiritual part of wellness. I will say Lynn, the next time that you feel something that triggers you into feeling bad, I want you to really pause and feel into it. For me, it could be something that a friend or family member said that was just really triggering. It felt really deep and I would often get upset and then it’s not really processed, and then it ends up manifesting in beating myself up, or focusing on something I could try to control, which is my body. So I learned this letting go technique, which we talk about in the book a lot, we talk about here, and it’s actually being okay with the full range of feelings.
Kimberly: So if someone bothers me and they trigger, it’s better to let yourself feel it deeply for a few minutes, about five or 10 minutes, and process it, and let it come out instead of pushing it down, pushing it down, which I think is a huge root cause of body shame and sugar cravings and a lot of disordered eating issues that we see. Sometimes professional help is warranted. Sometimes it’s good to talk to a trusted counselor, friend, therapist, family member, whatever. I know for me though, even the simple act of letting myself feel uncomfortable feelings, I used to push them down and hide and distract and then they would come out. Just letting yourself actually feel the feelings is the beginning of healing and a lot of pain can start to be processed. We can start to look at things instead of just beating up our bodies all the time.
Kimberly: Journaling can be really helpful here, as we were talking about with Carrie and the last question, mindfulness, quiet time, breath work, meditation is also helpful, but I think when we’re in trigger and there’s so much anxiety, I know for myself, I had insomnia, I had anxiety. It was manifesting in eating disorders. It was manifesting in wanting to eat less, wanting to obsess with being skinnier. Then not being able to eat less because I was hungry, and then throwing up, and the root root cause was that I just didn’t connect with my essence. I didn’t feel truly lovable. I didn’t feel that I was worthy and I felt that my worth was so much, depended so much on my weight. So starting to process, and feel, and get into that, and my personal journey, I have worked, I work with a healer now for years, just like an intuitive.
Kimberly: Traditional therapy, I tried a couple times, it didn’t work exactly for me. I know Kay, you are really into that as well so it’s just whatever modality works but it’s really getting into the pain. This is the shadow side. This is the Luna of Solluna. This is the moon side. It’s where we can start to understand ourselves, our wounds, our pain, which is part of our wholeness and when we go into that, so much is healed, including our relationship with our body. Our body is our temple, our body is our strength. But anytime we are hyper fixated, and we’re not accepting our body, which is perfect vehicle for taking us through life, whatever form it is in, it is given to us, it is a gift.
Kimberly: So if we are attacking ourselves, it’s a issue of lovability, largely in some degree of not deserving, not feeling good enough, that not enoughness creeping in. The way to heal it is to go in spiritually and emotionally and connect, because then we can start to see, oh there is this perfect part of me. There is something greater, so much greater than my body. And the more we tap into that, the more we expand and we grow and we love and we connect to our wholeness, which is the way to get past not accepting our bodies.
Katelyn: Sometimes for me, I feel like it’s the things I don’t want to do. There’s that resistance. I won’t want to read or I won’t want to journal. But those are the things that really do help along the journey. It’s the community as we’ve been talking about that really helps. Question #3: How can I stop associating, looking better with being more desirable?
Katelyn: Yes, so Jolene from Watertown, South Dakota is asking, I’ve had a few cosmetic surgeries and I’m still not happy with myself. How can I stop associating, looking better with being more desirable? I have all this anxiety and I’m really feeling down in the dumps about the intimacy with my husband, which I know isn’t good for our relationship.
Kimberly: Jolene, thank you so much for your question. Whew. We live in an age now of so much imagery that when we are vulnerable, when we are susceptible, when we are not connected with our self worth, all these images of models and stars and everything makes us feel, oh, if I looked like that then I would be lovable. There’s always this if, if I lost weight then I would be worthy of love. If I fixed my nose or whatever, then I would be enough and it’s the same thing we’ve been talking about all along. That will never go away. There will always be something else to fix. Oh, I’m going to highlight my hair, and I should get eyelash extensions. I should do this or that. I need this facial, blah, blah, blah. It’s never ending because it’s kind of like a square peg in a round hole.
Kimberly: We’re trying to fill this hole in us with something that will never fill it. We take care of our body, we take care of our diet. We do our best, but beyond a certain point that’s not going to do anything. We have to, once we get that an under and in check and we’re healthy and we’re in a good pattern or we know how to eat, we have to go in to connecting to our spiritual, emotional, mental body, our energetic body, the essence of who we are, the spirit. We are not just robots with a body walking around, we’re an essence. There’s oneness running through us. We have this life force that connects all of us. This is essential teaching of quantum physics by the way, besides yoga and and Vedic philosophy, there is this idea that there is a field and we are all connected in it and we all affect each other.
Kimberly: And when we start to understand our place and our power, and the fact that we are worthy just because we exist, the fact that we are alive. You are unique, you are amazing, you are completely your own being. We pay less and less attention to obsessing and trying to look like someone else and getting surgery around that. Of course there’s we all feel differently and maybe there’s something that really bothers you about yourself that you want to fix and if that makes you feel better, again, we’re not condemning plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery in any way because I don’t think there’s absolutes. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong. But what we’re saying here with you, Jolene, is if you feel that you just are in this cycle where it’s never enough, that is an unhealthy pattern and it’s connecting back in to heal that. I love to hear what you say too Kay because I know you’ve been through this, you’ve shared with us really openly from your heart, you just had breast implants removed. Could you share some insight on this with us because I know this is very personal to you as well.
Katelyn: Yeah. When I saw Jolene’s question come in, it definitely hit me in the heart and it’s something this year especially has hit close to home. I wasn’t really prepared for the impact I would feel taking out my implants after having them for over a decade. And for me, having cosmetic surgery, I’m not against it, but for me personally, I use it to objectify myself and feel hyper-sexual and more confident with struggling with my body and wanting to feel accepted by men and things like that. So mine was like a very heated and multi-layer facet of why I did those things and taking them out and coming back to my natural body has been a really epic journey for me connecting and not looking at myself as an object for other people or what people look at me for, really working on the wellbeing side and the spiritual side of our cornerstones.
Katelyn: It really switched my mindset and I’ve struggled of course because I don’t mean these people don’t look at me and don’t notice, but I feel like I look different and just accepting that, and knowing that I’m healthy and my body is what it needs to be since I had medical issues with my cosmetic surgeries, but it’s really, I would tell anybody who’s looking to get cosmetic surgery to just really dig deep into the why behind it. And if you feel good about it, great. But if you’re doing it for certain reasons, then just sit with that. That would just be my one suggestion. I got mine so young, I was like 18 that I wasn’t thinking, and as I got older I was like, really? Why did I do these things? So putting that thought, and that’s where that journaling and introspection that you brought up earlier in the show is really important when it comes to body image.
Kimberly: Thank you so much, Kay for sharing that. I know the root of all this is to feel beautiful and to feel desirable. Actually I really do believe we’ve heard it a lot. You heard about French women with the je ne sais quoi. There’s something about the mystique. Confidence is what makes us really attractive. That is something that, we’ve all met people that are so in their bodies and they’re so empowered and they’re so confident, they are striking, they are beautiful in their way because it’s amazing. So I would say working on our confidence is what will make you really even more irresistibly attractive to your husband and to other people as well. That comes again, true confidence only comes from connecting with our whole self.
Kimberly: If we’re confident because we are a certain weight or we have big boobs or one thing or another, that is one aspect of ourselves. And that can be amazing too. But that’s shaky, because guess what? we’re aging, we will gain weight, our faces will change. So it’s true confidence. True beauty comes from tapping into our wholeness and when we’re in touch with that we feel more relaxed and peaceful and powerful and that confidence really does radiate out and other people can feel it and it will give us what we’re looking for from cosmetic surgery but without having to necessarily go that way and especially in a series of surgeries.
Katelyn: Yeah. I love that you brought up confidence. I think it put a smile on my face cause it’s something I needed a reminder about. Also when you struggle with low self esteem, that also plays into all of this body image and just working on remembering the things that are amazing about ourselves that we’ve talked about this in previous shows, listing out things that we like about ourselves whenever we’re thinking something negative because for everything negative I’m sure for everybody they could call out several positive things. That mindset of positivity over negativity is something we talk about as well in the Soluna lifestyle.
Kimberly: Exactly, Kay. Thank you for a reminding us.

Kimberly: Susan. Wow. First of all, congratulations on your baby and this is amazing. It’s wonderful to have this experience. I don’t think everybody’s meant to have it necessarily. I don’t think everybody’s meant to have a child, has that desire, or wants to, or can and that’s okay, but I just want to acknowledge you for carrying life that your body and to congratulate you first of all. You said, yeah, I’m going through some changes. Sweetheart, you just carried a baby from conception to term. That is amazing. I want you to focus on the miracle of that and the strength of that. And I want you to feel into your body and do some gratitude practices. Sitting there, closing your eyes, feeling, thinking your uterus, your hormones, your back, your bones, the strength of your body to go through something like this and how incredible your body is.
Kimberly: I want you to stop looking at pictures and images from the past. So much of our misery is derived from comparison and a lot of it is visual. So we know it’s not helping you right now. We know it’s making you feel bad about yourself, so I’d love you to do an image detox and get away from all pre-baby pictures for now. Focus on taking pictures of your baby, taking pictures of you and your family right now because this is where you are right now. There has been major life changes. You have brought life onto the planet. You are in family mode, you are in recovery mode. I want you to focus on nurturing yourself. I want you to dial in your morning routine, as we talked about earlier, start making yourself really nourishing soups and stews and smoothies.
Kimberly: Focus on fiber, focus on your digestion. Take your SBO probiotics. Do what you can to fine tune and really nurture your body, which has been through this enormous, beautiful, monumental change. Again, get rid of the images. Get off anywhere that you are feeling that you’re comparing yourself, whether it’s a magazine or following certain people on Instagram. Just get back into you mama. Remind yourself how amazing and strong you are and follow that. Put all that energy into rebuilding your body, on taking care of your daughter or your son. And like Katelyn mentioned, when you find yourself beating yourself up, really do think about positives. In this case, it’s like, okay, I gained baby weight. I’m not exactly where I was, but positive note, my body is strong, my body created a miracle, co-created a miracle with the divine. My body is amazing and resilient, and it just simply is powerful and amazing.
Kimberly: This is the time to be in your divine feminine essence. This is the time to celebrate that incredible power of holding life. Without obsession, without obsessing over numbers, but I will say, this is the time to sit back and breathe and really celebrate your feminine essence and get away from those pictures.
Katelyn: No, I love that. I was thinking of Eckart as you were talking of just the power of now and being present, and how oftentimes when we’re dwelling on either the past or the future, it steals the joy of the moment we’re in. I just think that that’s the reminder there for anybody who’s going through, whether you’ve had a baby or not, just any type of bodily changes to just stay present where you are because we didn’t gain weight or lose weight overnight. Right? So the process is a lot bigger and longer than in momentary.
Kimberly: Yes, that’s right. It’s a depth. There’s a depth. And when we reduce ourselves just down to how we look, we are cutting off who we really are. We’re like, we are just giving up this whole depth of us, this wisdom, this true beauty, this power. We just have to focus on it. We just have to remember it. We have to just turn our gaze towards it. Literally it’s waiting for us.
Thought of the Week
So along these lines, I will end with my thought of the week. Just feel like rolling right into it. It is, this is a quote actually from Rom Das, an amazing book which sits in the drawer on my nightstand and I flip through it from time to time and it was hugely impactful for me the last two years or so after my mom passed, and after going through a lot of turmoil in my life, it says, we’ve all touched people who are so beautiful as beings that we never notice whether they are physically beautiful. It’s like an eternal beauty lives within them.
Kimberly: So is it just a reminder that despite being in a world of imagery, despite being in a world that’s obsessed with showing us bodies and sexuality and these ideal images of today, that is the tiny, tiny, tiny part of us, and the power to connect, affect others, to be magnetic really does come from connecting with our wholeness, connects with confidence, so we would love to help support you and nourish you in all those areas.
