Kimberly Snyder: Hi Beauties. Welcome back to our Thursday Q&A podcast where our topic today is sleep, beauty and the wellness connection. I love this topic today because we’ve been speaking so much about our four cornerstone lifestyle, which is food, body which is where sleep fits in, emotional wellbeing and spiritual growth, and just how much we need to really reevaluate our perspective of wellness. It’s not just about food, it’s not just about exercise, it’s not just one thing. Everything really works synergistically. When we talk about nourishing your whole self to feel good, we really do need to look at everything and how everything affects us.
Kimberly Snyder: So, as we’ll get into today, the way that we sleep, the quality of our sleep and not just the hours we sleep, but actually the quality of our sleep is going to impact our skin. It’s going to impact our moods, our energy, everything. So, sleep is a really important aspect of this and something that I have ignored in my own lifestyle for years and years especially. When I was living in New York and I was having dinner at 9:30 at night and going out a lot more, which is not to say that you can’t go out if that’s part of your lifestyle, but we’re going to talk about some different strategies today for really boosting everything overall.

Kimberly Snyder: I believe again about lifestyle and continuity and having this podcast in your life. It’s why we do it two times a week. It’s just a great way to keep your motivation up, to stay connected, to stay tuned in. It’s a really great self care modality to give yourself every week.
Kimberly Snyder: So that being said, let’s dive right in. We have our amazing community manager, Katelyn who is with us on the line. Hi Kay. I keep calling you community manager but she’s actually been promoted now for a long time. She’s our general manager. She runs the show. She is our earth mama. She is amazing and as busy as she is, we keep her on because she has been with me from the beginning, and she so deeply lives the life. Kay, I want to welcome you and thank you so much. I also want to give a little congratulations if I could that you just got engaged, and I just got engaged about a month ago. So, we are engaged sisters right now. I’m so happy for you and I love you so much.
Katelyn: Oh, thank you. Thank you for that lovely intro. As always, I am happy to be back and talk about this topic. I feel like sometimes we look at our lives in little boxes, and we don’t look at it as a whole. Now that we’ve really started incorporating the four cornerstones into our philosophy and the lifestyle here in Solluna, so excited to hear your tips and insights and just giving everybody a little bit of an overview of how to incorporate a more holistic view.
Kimberly Snyder: We talk a lot about authenticity and what feels good to you. I have not shared as much about my personal life or I have but then I felt a little worried about being judged because I have been married before and I am divorced. The thing is life is messy and that’s what this whole perfectly imperfect conversation is about. My life is perfectly imperfect and we go on the journey and sometimes things don’t work out. Not everything is neat and tidy for any of us in different aspects of our life. So, I don’t feel any shame about it. The fact that I’m in a relationship, I’ve been married before, I am really excited about where I am today. All the work I’ve done and the fact that I just feel really connected to myself.
Kimberly Snyder: I took a stand for being happy. I didn’t want to settle. I just … here we are. So, that’s a huge part of wellness too. Being authentic, living our life, not worrying about what our friends say or what people on social media might say or the judgment that comes, because I think when we really take a stand for ourselves and we’re living truthfully, then that’s the most powerful, that’s the most beautiful thing that we can do. We should support each other in that. I think that’s really amazing. Even if our life journey doesn’t turn out the way that we expect it to or our friends or whoever, we really just want to be authentic to what feels good to each of us.
Katelyn: Yeah. I want to thank you for sharing that because I have been dealing with a little bit of that shame coming up in my excitement of being engaged, because I also am divorced and gone through a lot of life changes as some of you Beauties listening may also have your perfectly imperfect journey that you’re on. I do really appreciate the vulnerability we have on this show. I think we’ve been able to be the most open verbally here with you guys listening to our conversations. It just naturally comes out that we can be open and share these little nuggets, because we all are living life and it’s not perfect. You know no matter how it looks on the outside in a picture, this and that, but we all have stuff going on that not everybody knows about. So, it’s great. We can share a little bit here and we hope it helps you guys.
Kimberly Snyder: I will also say that connected to our topic today about wellness and sleep and beauty, when we’re living in our truth, even if it’s messy and even if it’s imperfect as it inevitably will be, we are going to have less anxiety. Excuse me. Sorry.
Katelyn: Yeah.
Kimberly Snyder: [inaudible 00:06:53] I can say for myself that when I’m living truthfully, when my heart is in something, then I don’t stay up late worrying and overthinking about things. We’re taking life as it comes. There’s less … I used to be an insomniac. I used to being a recovering perfectionist, worrying and trying to control everything in every aspect of life. It had a huge impact on my sleep. Now, I can say that I make decisions, I change things when it doesn’t feel good, even though, again, that may not seem neat and tidy, but it is connected to our wellness. It’s connected to our sleep.
Kimberly Snyder: So, when we are authentic, when we’re being ourselves, we’re going to sleep better. We’re going to feel better in our body. We’re going to breathe deeper because we know that we’re being true to ourselves. Being true to ourselves and being happy is way more important than the image. It’s way more important than how it looks to our friends and our followers and our family. We have to be in our truth. That’s how I think the beauty really shows up. When we are feeling lighter because our hearts are open and we are being authentic, I think it shows in our skin. I think our eyes are more bright. I think it looks like we lifted 10 years off our faces. It really does affect everything else in a pretty profound way, which is what we’ll talk about today in our show.
Question 1: Is the amount of sleep different for everyone?
Katelyn: Yeah. I think that was a great way to dive into the first question here from April. She’s living in Cortez, Colorado. She’s asking, is the amount of sleep different for everyone? I try to get in seven to eight hours a night, but still wake up tired and I don’t feel like I look great. My eyes tend to be super puffy in the mornings.
Kimberly Snyder: So April, this is a great practical beginning to our show. So first of all, yes, everybody needs a different amount of sleep. There was a lot of research around this idea too, in my first book called Radical Beauty with Deepak Chopra if you’re interested in that, but generally, it’s considered seven to nine hours. So, while there’s some people that say, “Oh, I only need four hours.” because sleep is when our body is rejuvenating and repairing, including your skin cells, it really does show up on your face. We generally want at least seven hours.
Kimberly Snyder: Now, I can say for myself, if I get seven hours, I still feel off. I really need a true eight hours a night. So yes, to answer your question, first thing is we do need a different amount of time, but number two, I want to stress that even if you are getting seven, eight hours, it’s not just the time that you’re sleeping, but the depth you are sleeping. There’s different levels of sleep. We want to get into the deep level four stage four sleep where your body is deeply rejuvenating itself.
Kimberly Snyder: If you are, for instance, watching TV right before bed or you’re in your devices, there’s all this research now about blue light, which is stimulating part of your brain. So, let’s say you do that and then you go to sleep and you sleep eight hours, you’re not going to feel as rested because you haven’t gone into that deep sleep, even though the time is there, the depth isn’t there. So, this is where I really encourage you beauty to dial in your evening routine. For me, it’s a warm shower. I do a little bit of self-massage, I meditate, I read a book, but probably the … and I drink an elixir every night.
Kimberly Snyder: There’s tons of recipes we have for the elixirs, but lately I’ll share with you. It’s been warm and it changes all the time. It’s been warm almond milk, shatavari, which has an Ayurvedic herbs and nutmeg. That’s sort of my go to at the moment. It feels really nice and warming. It calms me down. It makes me feel my body, but probably the most important aspect of the evening routine is at least an hour before bed, to get off the TV, get off the devices or if that just sounds like I’m never going to do that, get some blue light blocking glasses.
Kimberly Snyder: There’s a great company called DefenderShield. They have some … or on your phone put it in night mode so it turns more red. If you’re on your computer, there’s an app called f.dot.lux, L-U-F.L-U-X. That turns your screen more red than blue. Do whatever you can to protect your eyes from absorbing all that blue light, which will affect the depth of your sleep. If we do that, if we do an evening routine and then we sleep seven, eight hours, your skin is going to look a lot better. You’re going to be less puffy, you’re going to look more refreshed.
Kimberly Snyder: Now besides that, there may be other reasons like having a lot of salt, a lot of processed foods, eating too late at night. So, we want to take measures to dial in our food as well. Try to eat at least three hours or more until you go to bed. Starting with those practices like we just spoke about, an evening routine, will already start to dial in the quality of your sleep. So, not only are you sleeping enough hours, but you’re also sleeping deeper.
Katelyn: I think it’s great to bring up the quality aspect of sleep because we often with technology, I know for me sometimes I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and I’ll look at my phone and then that’ll break up my sleep even more. For a couple of minutes, I’ll be like, “Oh, I’ll just look at Facebook.” because I’ll wake up at 3:00 in the morning and then I can’t fall back asleep for a couple of hours. So, I think having those practices like you talk about of putting your phone in airplane mode and totally disconnecting is really helpful, because that’s something I even struggle with of just totally disconnecting for the evening.
Kimberly Snyder: Uh-hmm (affirmative). Uh-hmm (affirmative). That’s great, Kay.
Katelyn: Yeah.
Kimberly Snyder: True.
Katelyn: Yeah.
Kimberly Snyder: Practical.
Katelyn: Yeah, definitely. We all need the tips to disconnect and not be on our phone so much that blue light.
Kimberly Snyder: Uh-hmm (affirmative).
Question 2: Is there really a connection between beauty and wellness?
Katelyn: All right. Let’s see what Dawn from New York, New York is thinking. I feel so vain when I worry about how I look. Is there really a connection between beauty and wellness?
Kimberly Snyder: So Don, thank you so much for your question. When we speak about beauty here at Solluna, it’s a little bit different than how the world at large talks about beauty, which may be just the surface. It may be in relation to makeup or hair products or things that we can paint on or put on ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with products. There’s nothing wrong with makeup. I love makeup. Personally, I do wear a little bit every day and sometimes more when I go out at night, so there’s nothing wrong with any aspect of it.
Kimberly Snyder: When we talk about beauty and true beauty, we’re really talking about a state of being. It’s really related to your energy, your quality of vitality. So, true beauty to me means that we are showing up in our fullest essence and that we are connected to ourselves. This authenticity that we are talking about at the beginning of the show, being so comfortable with yourself that you’re not judging, you’re not holding onto dark energy and guilt and shame all the time. You’re not walking around with that heaviness, that’s really beautiful. There’s a comfortability, there’s a naturalness about that.
Kimberly Snyder: It’s not about specific features, but when we feel comfortable, when we are meditating, doing stillness practice, we feel … we’re taking care of our mental health. We’re processing our emotions. Our guts tend to work better. We have better digestion. We just feel lighter and brighter. So, there really is a connection between beauty and wellness. Beauty in this deeper sense.
Kimberly Snyder: Remember our four Solluna cornerstones, our food, body, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth. So, when we’re eating well, when we’re taking care of our body, such as our topic today, sleeping well, taking care of our skin, exercising, and then we’re processing our feelings, we’re not harboring resentment and anger and anxiety, but really learning tools and strategies to breathe and let them pass through us, and then we’re connecting to the essence inside of us, that perfectly imperfect, the perfect part, the spirit, then we become more beautiful.
Kimberly Snyder: Again, our skin is going to glow more because we’re more happy, when we’re joyful, when we’re more peaceful. We will be more attractive, but we’re not doing it in a fake way by just relying on the external things that we paint on, but we’re building it from the inside out. So to me, this type of beauty, which is a presence, a magnetism, an energy, a vitality, a state of being is something that we can all access. We all have our unique expression of beauty because nobody is like you. So, we’re not about competition and comparison and looking at who has a better hairstyle or more styley clothes than other people, we’re really about, “How do I tune in more to myself?”
Kimberly Snyder: We can express that with the way we wear makeup. We can express that by clothes. The foundation, the root of it is much, much deeper and it comes from within each and every one of us. So, there’s my answer to that. There’s so many levels of beauty. We can all own our unique expression, and that to me is a really … that’s a potent part of wellness.
Katelyn: I love that. When you were talking I was thinking about something beautiful we do here at Solluna as a team, we do clearings and part of the clearings we acknowledge something we’re grateful for. That’s something I started doing a little gratitude journal. So, I think for you guys as we head into the break here, think about something that you’re grateful for today because I think when you practice gratitude, that does bring more beauty and wellness into your life. So, that was just a little something there to share with you guys that we do as a team that I think really brightens up my day. So, I wanted to share it with the community.
Kimberly Snyder: That’s great, Kay. Yes, I love the gratitude part. It really shifts our energy on what is good and what is working and what we love and what would we want to celebrate instead of it’s easy to get dragged down with what’s wrong in the world, what’s wrong in our lives, but really shifting to gratitude like you’ve mentioned, Kay is such a beautiful practice and really lifts our energy and lifts the light in our eyes. It’s really magnetic and that is really attractive.
Break
Katelyn: Yes. So, think about that for a few minutes Beauty as while we take a short break, and then Kimberly will be back and she’ll answer the last two questions.
Kimberly Snyder: All right, Beauties, we are back our break. We have two more questions for you guys. All around sleep, beauty, wellness, how everything is connected. I cannot wait to hear what else you Beauties are wondering.
Question 3: Is there such a thing as true beauty sleep? How much of our health and beauty is related to a good night’s rest?
Katelyn: Yes. So, we’ll dive right in to Gabby‘s question who’s living in Newark, Delaware. She asks, is there such a thing as true beauty sleep? How much of our health and beauty is related to a good night’s rest?
Kimberly Snyder: So Gabby, thank you so much for your question. I think that this is a great question. It hearkens back to our discussion about approaching wellness, approaching beauty from a more holistic standpoint. So to answer your question specifically, how much of our health and beauty is related? I think everything works together. So, I can’t say, “Oh, sleep is 40% and food is 30%.” I think for instance, the way that we eat, it’s going to affect our sleep and our lifestyle, the time that we wake up, having regular mealtimes for instance, getting sunlight before noon, all these things affect sleep and then sleep in turn affects our hormones. It affects our levels of leptin and ghrelin, our ability to feel satiated and to have normal levels of hunger, and our ability to really nourish our organs and regenerate our skin. So, everything really is related.
Kimberly Snyder: If one thing is off, conversely, even if we really eat on point, even if we stay really hydrated, even if we’re meditating, so on and so forth, then we’re never going to really hit the highest levels. So to me, true beauty sleep is we are working to establish a level of consistency in our sleep hygiene. We are honoring our sleep. We’re not just treating it like the last thing that’s of importance and “Oh, I got to watch another show and then I’ll wake up super early to get all this stuff done.”, we really try to honor that chunk of time as important rejuvenation time.
Kimberly Snyder: As I mentioned in our earlier question with April, it’s the quality of sleep that does add to that true beauty sleep. So, making sure we’re not eating right before bed, that really diminishes the quality of our sleep because we are digesting while we’re sleeping and we’re not really able to rejuvenate. Our skin is never going to look the best because instead of rejuvenating ourselves, our body is working to break down that food. So, things like having that evening routine and really honoring sleep, meditating, getting into our breath, having a really good … the practical parts, having a really great mattress as well, and our sleep environment, keeping it cool and having air cleaning plants, having an air filter in your room. There’s so many things that we can do to tweak this true beauty sleep so we’re honoring length, the duration, and also the quality of the sleep.
Kimberly Snyder: So, that’s my perspective of it. I think it really deeply impacts us because just like Solluna is the sun and the moon, the cycles, there’s a time to be solar and outward and on our computers and in the world and creating, but there’s a time for going inward and that the lunar phase, the darkness, the rejuvenation is this part of the seeds… is where the seeds of all new beginnings comes from. If we diminish that, if we don’t honor that, then we’re never going to feel truly balanced. So, just look at it that way. There’s a natural circadian rhythm in nature. There’s a natural rhythm in our bodies, so that actually is very, very important and something that we all need to take measures to clean up.
Kimberly Snyder: For me, it’s been super, super hot right now, and I’ve been trying to take extra measures to keep my bedroom cool and extra fan circulating. I don’t have air conditioning personally. So, yeah. So when something is off, whether it’s the temperature or light or staying out late or getting into a pattern of later dinners, whatever it is, sometimes we need to look at our own lifestyle and dial it in. That’s just an important aspect of wellness is keeping it going, to make adjustments as we need to and that includes to our sleep patterns.
Katelyn: Yeah, I think those are great tips. A lot of times now we’re so focused on as a society numbers, like you said, 40% people want to know percentages and numbers. I think this holistic viewpoint of having presented to people in a way of looking at it differently. Hopefully, that’s insightful to you guys to not look at it like it has to be broken into these different areas.
Kimberly Snyder: Yes, exactly. It’s like everything affects the whole. If we think about it like a circle, everything is in there. Everything affects everything else. So it’s … yeah, the numbers aren’t important rather than these are the ingredients. These are the key ingredients we’re putting in the pot for wellness and true beauty. If we’re missing an ingredient, it’s not going to come out as well.
Question #4: If I eat well, applying the beauty detox principles, exercise and meditate, why do I still feel like I look haggard and worn out? Is there something I’m missing?
Katelyn: I love that analogy. That’s a good one. All right. So, let’s head into the last question from Joan living in San Diego, California. If I eat well, applying the beauty detox principles, exercise and meditate, why do I still feel like I look haggard and worn out? Is there something I’m missing?
Kimberly Snyder: So Joan, this is a wonderful question. First of all, I want to applaud you for meditating and eating the beauty detox way and exercising. Those are amazing aspects of a healthy lifestyle, but it is not the end all be all. I think you’re covering some really important aspects here, but if you’re still not feeling your best, if you’re not experiencing the physicality of you want to look, then we know something can be off. So, let’s just take this through our four Solluna cornerstones and apply your specific question.
Kimberly Snyder: So number one is food. You talk about … you mentioned here, and I don’t know exactly what you’re doing, but you mentioned you’re applying the beauty detox principles. So, I’m going to assume that you’re pretty dialed in eating organic, you’re drinking the GGS, following the morning routine. That’s really important. So, great. Let’s just say that you’re doing great there.
Kimberly Snyder: Second is body. So, here’s where it’s really important to focus on digestion and ongoing cleansing. So, just because you’re eating well now, doesn’t mean there isn’t a fine tunes tweaking that we need to do to our digestion. I’ve been working on my digestion for over a decade, and I’m happy to say that I go to the bathroom a lot more than I used to. I’m a lot less bloated. So here’s where supplements like SBO probiotics and so on can be really helpful. That could be a reason that you feel worn out and tired. Your body may need more support, cleaning out. We have a lot more information about that on our website, but I can say that even if you’ve cleaned up your diet, your digestion may need some catching up or some extra nourishment or love.
Kimberly Snyder: Number two is sleep. As we’ve been talking about this whole podcast, I didn’t hear you mentioned sleep in your question. So, it’s really important Joan, that you are paying attention to your sleep hygiene, the depth and the quality and the time and dialing in that evening routine so you’re not up stimulating your brain or digesting food or watching TV right before bed. All these different things are going to impact your body’s rejuvenation, which really could be an aspect of this. As we take care of our body, you mentioned that you’re exercising.
Kimberly Snyder: Exercise can shift with the seasons and how we feel in our body and your menstrual cycles. So, just making sure that you’re tuned into your body. For instance, if it’s super hot out right now, we say there’s an abundance of pitta fire. Now is not necessarily the best time to do a heated yoga class or maybe spin class is going to feel really depleting and it’s going to wear you out. This may be a time to go to a lap pool or when it’s cool in the morning, take a walk outside or a hike or just change things up so it feels good to you and you’re actually supporting yourself rather than depleting yourself.
Kimberly Snyder: Our third Solluna cornerstone is emotional wellbeing, and this is where a lot of people are not paying attention. I was not paying attention for a long time, and there was still drama in my life, drama within myself. I was … the same patterns, the same feelings of not enoughness. That wears you out. That makes you look haggard because you’re in your head all the time. So, we have a lot of … we talk about this a lot. It’s the subject of the latest book, Your Perfectly Imperfect Life, which again, if you’ve read The Beauty Detox Solution and you’re like, “yeah, I love that. Get the food.” Trust me beauties. This emotional part and breaking patterns is related to bloating and inflammation. We want to make sure that we’re processing emotions, our emotions and our feelings in a healthy way. So that could be a huge missing factor for you, Joan.
Kimberly Snyder: Then fourthly, the meditation part, which you are doing, the spiritual growth. I encourage you to keep going with that and making it regular. So morning and night, even if it’s a minute or three minutes or five minutes or half an hour, whatever you can do to really keep that consistently in your life, there’s going to be tons of benefits. The deeper you go, the more vitality you will get from your meditation.
Kimberly Snyder: When I started, it was really hard for me to sit still. I was always wondering if I was wasting my time. I sort of hated it to be honest. It was really uncomfortable for me, but now I feel like I just get so much, I could pull so much out of meditation, so much creativity and so much joy that it really does nurture us on the deepest level. Number one, wellness practice is stillness meditation. So, to answer your question, Joan, I would just look personally to those cornerstones and see where you may be overemphasizing or not paying enough attention and only you know your full lifestyle, but we know something’s off. So, just look at everything and apply it through that framework. I’m sure that you’ll find some areas that you may need to give yourself a little bit more loving as well.
Katelyn: Yeah. I think that when we put things in the perspective of the four cornerstones now, it’s so much easier to digest and you can look at it in each area and see if you need a little maintenance or if you’re good in that specific area. So thank you for explaining it that way. We hope, beauties, that as we talk about it more like this, that you start to just automatically look at every area of your life just on a daily basis and you’ll see how you need to do maintenance.
Kimberly Snyder: Yeah, exactly. Things shift all the time. There’s never a moment where like, “Oh God, I am here. I made it on top of the mountain.” The journey always, always continues. It’s like this onion that we’re unraveling that we never get to the end of it. There’s always more. We’re always growing. We’re always acquiring more wisdom. We get closer to remembering our power, who we really are over time. So, we’re all in this bow. We’re all on the journey. I’ve learned so much more about myself I would say in the last two years, Kay. I talked about this a lot than ever in my life. I mean a whole series of events. Since losing my mom has woken me up in a pretty profound way. I know it’s not the end. I’m still going of course, and there’s so much, but yeah, we want to keep dialing it in. We want to keep tuning into ourselves.
Katelyn: Just before we let go, as always, I’m wondering if you have a quote of the week or anything you want to share.
Thought of the Week
Kimberly Snyder: I do have a quote of the week. This comes from our Radical Beauty book, which I mentioned earlier. This is on page five. When you are trying to be something other than yourself, you cannot be beautiful, which by nature is the truest aspect of you and you alone. So, I just want to leave you with this thought, beauty. When we are constantly looking outward and comparing and what’s this person doing and should I be more like this or am I not really beautiful unless I had this sort of body, and oh, I better do this workout, which the celebrity’s doing, we’re taking away from our power. We’re taking away from our beauty.
Kimberly Snyder: In this book we talk about the truest aspect of beauty is owning your own expression. As Kay and I were just talking about, that means tuning in. What do you need? How do you evolve your exercise practice? How can you evolve your evening routine? When you’re depleting yourself a little bit, like, what is it in your lifestyle to tweak? Not what your best friend’s doing, not what your coworker that sits at the next cubicle is into at this moment, but what really resonates with you.
Kimberly Snyder: This uniqueness is your power. I want you to breathe into that like the beginning of a huge fire, the embers, the kindling, the beginning of that. Breathe into feeling and connecting with yourself. Really, as we talked about in this whole show, that’s how you will grow in your most magnetic, powerful beauty. It’s in there. You already got it. We are going to remember that and we are going to foster it. We’re going to nurture it.
Kimberly Snyder: It also starts with stopping, looking outward as much, stopping, comparing yourself as much. So, part of that is just shifting of our paradigm, getting out of patterns, maybe unfollowing accounts and things that are coming into your feed that don’t feel good to you. Turning off shows and forms of media that don’t feel good and positive to you. So, do a little detox. Clean up your space, take back your power and really own your amazing beauty.
Katelyn: Well, thank you for that, K. Thank you beauties for listening. As always, we want to remind you, we love hearing your thoughts and questions, so be sure to go to mysolluna.com/askkimberly.
