Question #1 around the topic of: Honoring the Different Cycles of Life: My body has a hard time adjusting to the heat. Do you have any tips on how to make this transition easier?
Kimberly: All right, all that being said, let’s get into our show today, honoring the different cycles of life. And our first question comes from Becca, who lives in Texas and she writes, “My body has a hard time adjusting to the heat. Do you have any tips on how to make this transition easier?” So Becca, thank you so much for your question and being in Texas, I can imagine that the heat can feel like a lot, it can feel oppressive at certain times of the year.
Kimberly: 03:31 And this goes back to really honoring the seasonal aspect of our lifestyle. We want to adjust what we’re eating, how we’re exercising, our daily practices for each season, just like we would shift our clothes. In Ayurvedic terminology, this is the season, summer starts to go and go until August where it’s really at the peak, where it’s this Pitta at time of year. There’s a lot of fire, there’s a lot of heat externally and there’s a lot of heat that builds up internally inside of our body. So we really want to be aware of that. And we want to honor that and we want to work to balance that. So from an Ayurvedic perspective, this is a great time of year to incorporate cooling herbs, cooling spices, cooling foods, yin foods. And I recommend of course, lots and lots of greens. Greens have a very cooling aspect to them. So this is of course, the season to eat lots of salads. I encourage you to experiment with different dressings and different recipes. Keep it fresh, keep it light.
Kimberly: 04:39 It doesn’t mean that you only have to eat salad, but it’s a wonderful base, for example, for a lunch right now, meaning a ton of salads at lunch. And then you can layer on top some denser foods like lentils or quinoa or tempeh or something like that. But having those greens is fantastic. Also, lots of coconut water, lots of hydration and certain spices like fennel and coriander, so spices like fennel and coriander are going to be wonderful this time of year. I definitely suggest that you avoid garlic, onions, chilies, anything that’s going to add excess heat into your body. So spicy foods right now, hot sauce, sriracha all of that, you can have some of it, but if you’re finding, Becca, as you said that your body is having a really difficult time, you may have a lot more of the Pitta constitution in your body. And so you may want to really scale back on these sorts of foods.
Kimberly: 05:49 So from a body perspective, really cooling in yin yoga is a wonderful thing to practice this time of year. Stretching, breathing, just letting your body unfold. This is not the time for hot yoga, this is not the time to push yourself in ways that don’t feel really good to your body and can add to that overheating and can add to that discomfort. So walking is wonderful and if you can do it earlier in the morning, it’s just a wonderful way to start the day being out in nature, to take some deep breaths and to be out in the more gentle light as it’s rising up. So I would take a look at your exercise pattern and what we’re doing now in our practical enlightenment meditations, which are the meditations that I’m putting out every single week now on our website, mysolluna.com, they are uploaded into the app, the Solluna app is really being aware of that, the motion, the energy that we, the way that we move our bodies starts to run through us. And it can go down into deeper levels of our subconscious and into ourselves.
Kimberly: 06:58 So the way that you’re moving is not separate from the way that you’re feeling the rest of the day. We want to move our bodies and to take care of our bodily temples in ways that are synergistic with the season. So just take a look of anything, starting to feel true abrasive in your body, honor that we are in this time of peak Pitta, peak sun and make some adjustments. Emotionally, when we start to feel that heat building in our bodies, we can become more prone to agitation and stress. And that can, even though it’s summertime and we think stress is relaxation, there’s still a lot of things to deal with in summer, for instance, summer traffic, depending where you live. So I encourage you to really let the mind have space to cool down. And this will, of course, let your body feel more relaxed and light and cool.
Kimberly: 07:56 So time to process your feelings, stillness, meditation, of course, journaling, having some nice time with friends and with community to chat or to share, people that you trust, loved ones that you can feel open with. And of course, we have our Solluna circle community, if you want to join that on the app, it’s a wonderful place to feel supported. And that cooling down, when we have more space to sit back and notice what happened, or if there’s resentment or anger or stress building in your body and just to let that light, allow yourself to breathe through it, it doesn’t start to build and build and build into that heat. That’s felt mentally and emotionally, and then starts to actualize in our body. Our mind and our body are one continuous loop. And so the stress in the mind will start to manifest as stress in the body, inflammation and heat. So this is really important to note.
Kimberly: 08:58 And then spiritual growth wise of course, just meditation, meditation, meditation. We have again, free meditations for you every week if you’re looking for a guide, or finding something that resonates, something that you can settle down into yourself with and get into a regular practice. And this just helps us reset. This helps us from getting so reactive during the day, all the myriad little things that can come in and feel like they’re poking at us and annoying us. And again, that starts accrue and accrue into heat, into agitation. So when we meditate and we take the time to feel centered in the beginning of the day, and ideally we would also do this at the end of the day. It gives us that chance to breathe and to access deeper levels of ourselves, deeper down. It’s like in the ocean where the surface is choppy and all the waves are happening on the surface.
Kimberly: 09:53 But those of us that have scuba dived, those of us that have been fortunate enough to scuba dive you go down and then it starts to become very still and stillness and equanimity lend themselves to coolness of mind and coolness in the body. So this reminds me of when I was in Japan a few years ago, and I noticed in our hotel, in the communal areas, there was this little beautiful bell contraption thing, and it would ding, ding, it would go off periodically. And I said to the staff, I said, “What is this? What does the bell mean?” And they said that it had to do with their perspective that the bell helped to cool the minds. And when you cool the mind, you cool the body. So I thought that was really beautiful. And I wanted to share that with you. So let me know how you do Becca with these tips. Question #2 around the topic of: Honoring the Different Cycles of Life: Even though I live in sunny Florida, I have days where I feel depressed. Do you have any tips on how to switch my mindset?
Kimberly: 11:12 Okay. Our next question comes from Bethany and she lives in Florida and she writes, “Even though I live in sunny, Florida, I have days where I feel depressed. Do you have any tips on how to switch my mindset?” So I love this question, Bethany, and I think it’s important that we acknowledge and we become aware and we’re honest with what we’re feeling. First of all, that’s a huge step forward because unfortunately, a lot of us learn to cope, to survive in life, by numbing our feelings and pushing them down or just pretending they’re not there. And that just keeps them going. It’s like someone keeps knocking at your door and they knock and knock and knock. They don’t usually just go away right away. It depends on who it is, but usually they’re knocking and knocking until you acknowledge, until you give some feedback. And so it is with feelings, depression, and anxiety, as we know are rampant right now in society. And this is something to pay attention to in our individual lives.
Kimberly: 12:19 And of course, if you’re feeling that this is escalating, if this is something that is feeling more and more heavy, I do encourage you, Bethany to seek professional help, of course, professional counsel. But what I will say is that it is natural to have everyday ups and downs, ups and downs in our daily life, not every single day, but in periods. And it’s usually a signal I find to go deeper and to uncover what is there, what is underneath all of that? What is the root of this depression, this lethargy, or on the other hand, anxiety where fear is usually at the root? So some say that we’ve had many different depression. We’ve had at least two, maybe three experts on depression come on the podcast that talk about depression being a form of masked anger. So what I would encourage you to do, Bethany is first of all, to acknowledge and to congratulate yourself for having the clarity and the courage to acknowledge your own feelings of depression. And to know that there’s nothing wrong with that, there’s nothing weird about it.
Kimberly: 13:33 We all have these feelings, but it’s important now that we start to put energy and attention into them. Now, it is easier, of course, seasonal effective disorder to feel a little bit more down in the winter when there’s less light, less vitamin D there’s things that happen to our brain. Yet at the same time, we have feelings all through the different cycles of the year. This is natural and this is normal. So don’t beat yourself up because you live in beautiful Florida and you feel like you have to be a hundred percent happy all the time. I really don’t believe that’s how it’s meant to work. I think we’re dynamic beings and so we feel feelings all the time. And what I would encourage you to do, though, let’s talk about this from the four cornerstone perspective, food wise, some of the foods that are prone to helping our brains feel good, helping us feel happy so to speak, are first of all, Omega-3 fatty acid rich foods.
Kimberly: 14:35 So this is a wonderful time of year to incorporate chia pudding, it’s nice and cooling. It’s something you could have cold, out of the fridge in the afternoon as a snack, you may also want to consider taking a DHA EPA supplement, which is another way to just ensure that you’re getting those healthy fats into your body. So you can get them based in algae, there is no need to take any sort of fish pill or fish oil or anything like that. The primary source is the algae, so you can also do that. And other great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids include different nuts and seeds like walnuts and different greens. Just eating a wide variety of foods is definitely going to have… A wide variety of plant foods, plus consciously adding in things like the chia seeds, hemp seeds onto your salad, flax seeds, if you like flax seeds and again, taking your supplement.
Kimberly: 15:47 Body-wise a way to feel. And we were just talking about this in our last question with Becca, a bit, feeling life, feeling that pranic flow, feeling alive, moving your body in ways that feel good. For me, that is my daily walk, hike in the neighborhood, because there’s a part where it’s a dirt road and it feels like a hike. I feel amazing doing that walk and it makes me really feel alive. When I come back from that walk, I feel energized. So I usually do it in the middle of the day, the morning I’m going and going I’m with the kids. And then there’s a break in the middle of the day and Moses is napping. And then I go on that walk and then I come back feeling great for the rest of the day. So it’s important to move. Maybe Bethany, you like to dance, or you like to cycle, or maybe since you’re in Florida, you like to swim.
Kimberly: 16:37 But exercise isn’t just about burning calories or having nice muscles, movement is flow, movement is energy. And the more we bring that energy, how we want to feel, I will say moving in the way that we want to feel. For me, it’s fluid and free and light, brings that energy into our life. So I encourage you to find a form of movement that you can really stick with. And then our third cornerstone is emotional wellbeing. And this is where we need to process and sit with our feelings. Now, the most important part of this practice to remember is that you have to go beyond thought. So if you’re sitting there for 30 minutes recalling all the things that happened and how this shouldn’t have happened and this person was really mean and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. What happens is that we just get stuck in a thought pattern and it actually holds the energy of that emotion in place.
Kimberly: 17:37 And we don’t really get to digest it, digesting a feeling, maybe there is some repressed anger within you that has led to these feelings of depression. Maybe it’s feelings of frustration or helplessness, or not being able to express yourself or whatever it is. So to do this practice, and I do this quite a bit, a couple of times a week is I just lay back and I breathe. And then I like to do this after meditation. And I don’t follow the thoughts. So you have to keep pulling yourself back into your center of the thoughts, keep coming up and go down into your body and sense the feelings and the sensations that are in your body. And you don’t have to label them. You don’t have to say, oh, there’s that hidden anger right there. Just let it come in waves or sensations. This is emotional digestion. This is what most of us have never been taught. I was never taught to do this until recently in the last few years, but this helps to release trapped energy.
Kimberly: 18:40 It’s just like when we do a physical detox, let’s say you do a GGS cleanse for a few days and toxins flush out so that there’s more space in your GI tract. This is our emotional detox. So anything that’s stuck that we repressed or suppressed inside of us, maybe unknowingly, has a chance to be felt, processed and released. And so this is a really powerful practice to do with yourself. Lastly, spiritual growth. When we can connect down to our essence, we can find an easier time. We have an easier time in letting go of more and more. So letting go of hurts, pains, disappointments, letting go of the judgment like, oh, I should be happy today. All of these little micro things, there’s a much deeper, bigger energy field that we can access, but we can only access it when we go beyond the surface of life. And we can go deep, deep, deep down into our center, into our core, which is the reason I’m so passionate about meditation. It has helped me so much in my life.
Kimberly: 19:52 I thought that I really made a big leap when I shifted my dietary regime, when I shifted the foods I was eating and I did, I was able to overcome bloating, I started to feel really good in my weight and in my body, but I will say it goes so much deeper. And when I started to really meditate in a consistent way, when I started to pay attention to my emotions, woof, the levels just went up and up and up. Levels in terms of deep centeredness, peace, enjoying life, which again just starts to flow and it starts to make everything easier, including the ways that we eat. Our cravings start to go away, we start to feel good in our bodies, body shame starts to slough away. So all of these ways Bethany, I encourage you to look into them. And again, you can do these along with some professional help and counseling.
Kimberly: 21:00 You can monitor that for yourself, but I encourage you to really take this to heart, to take this holistic approach no matter what. And to know that we are where we are, we’re meant to be where we are and when we accept where we are and we feel into where we are, then we can start to take the steps forward and to move into that lightness and bliss that is our true nature, that is available to us. And what I love about this topic as well is that it means that we’re starting to go beyond these labels, as I mentioned at the beginning of the podcast, of this is the best cycle and this is the worst good, bad, black, white, right, wrong. When we can start to meld into this field of more equanimity and really finding the beauty in honoring each moment, we just enjoy life so much more, things aren’t so serious. These labels create so much rigidity and so much suffering. So starting today, we can make more and more of an effort to transcend all these limiting labels, limiting beliefs, and we can start to open up more and more to life. All right.
Question #3 around the topic of: Honoring the Different Cycles of Life: I love that you’re bringing more spirituality into your philosophy Kimberly! Can you share 1-2 must-have practices that anyone can start today?
Kimberly: 23:05 So our next question comes from Don, who lives in Washington and she writes, “I love that you’re bringing spirituality into your philosophy Kimberly, can you share one to two must have practices that anyone can start today?” I love this question, Don, thank you so much for writing in and I send you lots of love out there to Washington, another beautiful State. So yes, we have these four cornerstones, but I’m very open now about speaking my truth, which is that of all the cornerstones, the spiritual cornerstone is the most important one. Why? Because when we connect in, when we connect, everything starts to open up more and more, including our relationship with food. What happens with food is that we tend to project a lot of our energies that feel stuck or stagnant or where we’re not really nourished, where we’re not really connected. So things like eating disorders, food cravings, bingeing, just over analyzing our food comes from some part of us being disconnected because otherwise foods just here and there, we can enjoy it. We let it go. We don’t put all our eggs in that basket.
Kimberly: 24:32 We don’t need food to help us feel better, to shift our mood, to give us comfort because we have so much more connection in other parts of our life that we can call upon. So it doesn’t mean that we just work on the spiritual cornerstone, but I say that because it’s easier to ignore the spiritual cornerstone because we have to eat every day and we need to move our bodies, sometimes that’s exercise sometimes it’s not, the physical part of life is happening, but the spiritual part can be ignored, it really is a conscious choice that we have to make. So we want to honor all of the cornerstones, just like we want to honor all of the cycles of life with spirituality is at the core. And spirituality is really about awareness, awareness as we move through life, awareness of who we are.
Kimberly: 25:29 And when we start to connect in with this essence, this energy, we just start to feel more light. Again, our food tends to balance. We tend to have healthier relationships. We tend to have less drama and angst in our life. It doesn’t mean it goes away all at once, it doesn’t mean that everything works out the way we want it to work out, but our inner state is a much more steady and we come from a place of depth and we come from a place of deeper understanding. So Don, the answer is a beautiful approach to take just one to two steps, let them integrate and then you can go further. So of course, my first step that I recommend is morning meditation. In the morning, we have a chance to reset, it is a rebirth literally every day. So we can breathe and center ourselves and get into our bodies.
Kimberly: 26:26 And so to align with our deepest intentions of how we want to walk through life, we can bring that love and that kindness that starts to emerge naturally from meditation. Just that feeling of ha, we can bring that into our day when we meditate in the morning. So that is the number one practice I recommend in general, really, but definitely for your question. It can be a few moments, you can try one of our guided meditations, which again is on the website and on the app. And they’re generally six to seven minutes, so not so long. And you can meditate with me, I can guide you through, it’d be my great honor. And again, just start to tune in before you start the day, it is enormously empowering and it brings a different quality of awareness and perspective into your day.
Kimberly: 27:21 And secondly, if I could choose the second practice I would say, is either to meditate again in the evening, you could try doing the same guided meditation or a different one, we’ve many to choose from, to help you reset into sleep. Or you can also focus on just being more aware of your breath during the day. The great yoga guru Paramahansa Yogananda teaches us that breath is the cord that ties our soul to our body. So we can get a lot of information from our breath. And when we start to bring this awareness to our breath pattern, day in and day out, we can start to notice, oh, I’m getting agitated, the breath is getting faster or oh, something’s happening, I’m getting triggered because it’s getting really fast.
Kimberly: 28:16 So what we want to do when we have that awareness is to sit back, take a pause, allow ourselves to get into a deeper breath pattern again, and take deeper inhales and exhales and allow ourself to reset, to go back into spirit, into the deeper part of ourselves, into that essence. That can’t be so easily quantified by the physical saying oh, I’m wearing a red shirt today, going back to that knowingness deep inside. So meditating in the morning, watching our breath and notice, don’t even have to put words to it, notice the wisdom that watching our breath starts to give us and the wisdom it starts to lead us towards in terms of self-care, meaning maybe I need to slow down. Maybe I need to say no to this particular event or whatever proposal right now. Maybe I need a moment to myself. Maybe this is an indication that a boundary has not been put up or a healthy boundary has been crossed. I need to take action, whatever it is. There’s so much wisdom that comes from our breath pattern. So I definitely encourage you to tune into that. So thank you so much Don my love. Question #4 around the topic of: Honoring the Different Cycles of Life: I’ve heard you talk about rotating your greens for the Glowing Green Smoothie. Can you share what your favorite tips are when it comes to foods outside of the GGS?
All right. Our next and final question comes from Robert. Yay. A brother in our community. We have many brothers actually, and sometimes we don’t hear from all of our brothers, but we are in this collective oneness. So we honor you and we welcome you in Robert, from Utah. And he writes, “I’ve heard you talk about rotating your greens for the glowing green smoothie, can you share what your favorite tips are when it comes to foods outside of the GGS?” Yes. Robert, this is a wonderful question. And I will specifically talk about my favorite foods right now, which is summertime. So right now my percentage of my daily diet of fruit gets pretty high.
Kimberly: 30:27 This is the season for incorporating lots and lots of fruit and other rough foods to ensure that we are getting the most that we can in our bodies, in terms of enzymes and vitamins and freshness. So right now, Robert, I have a very high fruit diet, and I also eat a lot of salads, as I mentioned earlier, I love the Dharma’s Kale Salad Recipe, you might want to check that out as well. I eat that on a weekly basis, a very regular basis. I’m a big believer in sprouts and right now I’m blending sprouts daily in my power protein smoothie, which is my other favorite smoothie. So I’m a big smoothie person right now.
Kimberly: 00:01 [GGS Power Protein Smoothie. I tend to eat a lot of sprouted brown rice. I also eat a lot of cooked veggies. I love potatoes of all kinds, sweet potatoes, red jacket potatoes. I eat a lot of lentils. My older son, Emerson, loves lentils, so we have a lot of lentils in the house. Moses loves beans and avocados, so sometimes I eat the foods along with them. I eat a lot of wraps, gluten-free brown rice wraps. We can choose to see the beauty in each moment.” So there’s a couple of key words here I want to call out. First is, “it’s possible.” It is a choice. We can choose. It’s not that we have to fall into these programs that everybody else buys into. Like, “Oh gosh, winter sucks every day,” or, “My thirties are way better than my twenties, but it’s going to suck again when I’m in my forties.”
Kimberly: 02:38 Whatever these stories we tell ourselves, there is beauty. There is uniqueness and we can find the awe and the beauty truly in each moment, in each cycle of life, we can honor it as its own thing. So this is the important part. We go beyond comparison, which is a huge form of suffering. We do not need to compare this moment to another. We do not have to compare this moment to our most elevated moment. We do not have to compare this moment with someone else’s moment that we see on social media. And when we start to move past comparison, it means that we can really, really honor the beauty in each and every moment.
