This week’s topic is: Healthy Digestion and Elimination Tips and Tools
We are in the midst of spring. This is the time to be cleansing our system of heaviness, and stagnation from winter. Any sort of accumulation that can restrict our energy, our pranic life force flows, circulation, all sorts of wonderful ways that our energy is expressed. All the infinite ways that energy is expressed through our bodies and our being. And if we are clogged, if we are stagnant, especially in our GI tracks, it really does hold us back. It keeps our energy down and it certainly ages us much faster.
This is a topic that I used to be pretty embarrassed to talk about. A lot of us don’t really want to talk about going to the bathroom and digestion, but it’s a very important topic and we want to enhance this part of our health and wellness. It’s not just what we’re putting into our bodies, but also what leaves our bodies on a consistent basis, that really makes a huge difference in our overall vitality.
it’s not just what we take in, but what we release, what we let go of. This whole letting go concept is an enormous one. It spans our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of ourselves. When we let go in one of those aspects, we let go in other aspects because everything is so interconnected. And letting go is really a flow that happens through our lives and it opens up pathways and it opens up energy and it allows us to be more magnetic. And today we dive deeper into why this topic is so important, not just for your physical body, but for all areas: your relationships, your career, your goals and your dreams.
Have you been wondering about this very topic? If you want to know the answer to this question and 3 more sent in by Beauties just like you, listen now to find out!

Kimberly: Hey Beauties and welcome back to our Thursday Q&A podcast. Our topic today is on Healthy Digestion and Elimination Tips and Tools. This is a very important topic by the way. We are in the midst of spring. This is the time to be cleansing our system of heaviness, stagnation from winter, any sort of accumulation that can restrict our energy, our pranic life force flows, circulation, all sorts of wonderful ways that our energy is expressed. All the infinite ways that energy is expressed through our bodies and our being. And if we are clogged, if we are stagnant, especially in our GI tracks, it really does hold us back. It keeps our energy down and it certainly ages us much faster.
Kimberly: So this is a topic that I used to be pretty embarrassed to be honest, talking about. I just think like a lot of us, we don’t really want to talk about going to the bathroom and digestion, but it’s a very important topic and we want to enhance this part of our health, of our wellness, because otherwise it’s not just what we’re putting into our bodies, but also what leaves our bodies on a consistent basis, that really makes a huge difference again, in our overall vitality.

Kimberly: So I’m very excited to get your questions this week. As always these questions come right from you guys. And so many of us have the same questions. We’re here to support each other along the journey and the path. And that is what our podcast is all about. That’s our full intention. So thank you so much for tuning in today. Before we get fully into it. I’d like to just give you a little reminder to please leave us a review on iTunes, Spotify, wherever you listen to our podcast. It’s just a great way to support the show. It’s free, it’s easy, and it can be one sentence long. Also while you’re over there, please be sure to subscribe to our podcast and that way you don’t miss out on any of these Q&A topics, our shows on Thursdays or our Monday interview podcast or solo casts.
Kimberly: All right, my loves let’s get right into this topic, this very rooty, earthy topic so to speak. We’re talking about our lower energy centers here, the parts of us that are very connected to the Earth so to speak, known as the root chakra in the yogic system. And again, speaking of that in Ayurvedic medicine, there’s a huge emphasis on digestion and going to the bathroom. And we know that many of us grew up in a culture, depending where you grew up, where it was so much about taste and convenience, and then sort of having band-aids when things don’t work well, whether it’s just taking antacids or laxatives or all those different aisles in the grocery store and the drug store, different sorts of indigestion products out there, instead of really taking a really deeper look on how we can improve our digestion day in and day out on a regular basis.
Kimberly: Sometimes we just run after one thing or another. And I just want to emphasize again, before we get into our first question that it’s not about being perfect. It’s about improving, taking these small daily steps and working towards that 80%, trying to be consistent around 80%. And that starts to really make a big difference in our lives. So it’s not about, Oh, I haven’t been absolutely on track, so let me just fall way off and then try something else. But rather again, just incorporating little tips, little steps, and really building from there.
Question #1 around the topic of: Healthy Digestion and Elimination Tips and Tools: Hi, Kimberly, can you share any tips on how to improve digestion without necessarily taking supplements? Sometimes I just can’t afford them and would like suggestions on how to use healthier food choices and which ones are better.
Kimberly: So our first question comes from Avery and she lives in Virginia and she writes, “Hi, Kimberly, can you share any tips on how to improve digestion without necessarily taking supplements? Sometimes I just can’t afford them and would like suggestions on how to use healthier food choices and which ones are better.”
Kimberly: So Avery, thank you so much my love for your question. Sending a big hug out there to Virginia and I get it. I know sometimes, especially now with everything going on, it’s been a time of transition and a time for shifts for a lot of us. And so sometimes we want things that we can’t … Maybe we have to put off getting them. I won’t say can’t because I think ultimately if we really want something, we can work towards it. So I try not to say the can’t word, sounds pretty negative, but you know, maybe the timing just needs to be a little bit further ahead in the future. Of course, I definitely recommend across the board, it would be when that possibility opens up, taking the SBO probiotics and Detoxy are great, great, tools, but to your question Avery, in everyday life, what can you do to really help support your digestion?
Kimberly: And I would say first of all, to really focus on fiber. So instead of juices, really focusing on bringing in the whole vegetable and the whole fruit. This is the season for smoothies, going into spring, into summer. It’s a really wonderful time. Fiber is a really important, important element for our gut health. Fiber doesn’t just cleanse our system, which I think is the way that we think about fiber first, or I do, think about a broom and the cleansing ability of fiber. But it also helps to feed the lining of the gut. And it helps to produce these short chain fatty acids, which in turn help to reduce inflammation throughout our system. And so fiber is really, really important overall, and fiber just creates this wonderful regulation of our system, in our system, of the way that foods are hitting our system, in the way that our energy levels can be sustained.
Kimberly: So just really putting a focus on fiber first of all, Avery. We know that only plant foods have fiber. So again, the GGS, Power Protein Smoothie, all the millions of smoothie recipes we have over at mysolluna.com. And then really, I will also say this as my second tip, is really great chewing. So this is the reason we have our Digestive Enzymes, for people that don’t chew well enough, that which means most all of us, and just helping to boost those enzymes to help break down the food. But if you know, we’re not using the enzymes right now, I would say to just really, really chew your food very well. I think mastication chewing is one of the most underrated parts of digestion. We’re all in a rush or we’re watching something or talking to someone while we’re eating and let’s face it, we don’t chew as well as we know that we could be chewing. So that’s my second tip.
Kimberly: Number three, I really encourage you to stay very, very hydrated. If we are off with our hydration, if we become even slightly dehydrated, it really slows down detoxification and it slows down elimination. And so those are a few tips to keep in mind. There’s so many different blogs and vlogs that I’ve created about specific foods that could go on and on and on, Avery. I encourage you to check them out over on the site, but these three tips, I think, will get you going in a really, really great way. And hopefully you’ll be able to incorporate one or all of them into into your practice, into your diet regularly. Let me know how you do, keep in touch with us. And again, sending you lots of love out there to Virginia.
Question #2 around the topic of: Healthy Digestion and Elimination Tips and Tools: Is it true that eating prunes can help with constipation? I am not a fan. Are there other food sources that can help assist with going to the bathroom more consistently?
Kimberly: Okay. Our next question comes from Lucy and she lives in Canada. Hi Lucy, hope it’s getting warm over there. “Is it true that eating prunes can help with constipation? I am not a fan. Are there other food sources that can help assist with going to the bathroom more consistently?” Yes. So I will say that prunes and other dried fruit have been known to help ease constipation, especially if it’s acute and you feel really backed up and you want it to move through your system, that’s something that you can definitely take. Not a fan. You know, I’m not a fan either sometimes of prunes. Prune juice is something that I have taken a little bit of and I’ll dilute it in water and drink that. So maybe not a fan of the taste of that, but if you hold your nose, you could probably get that down easier than just taking straight prunes. Again, to your question about food sources, I would highlight again what I mentioned to Avery about fiber and really being hydrated.
Kimberly: And actually these two go hand in hand, because if you switch to a more plant-based diet too, by virtue of that, you’re having more fiber, you really need to increase your water intake pretty significantly because your body’s getting used to having all that fiber and fiber takes a tremendous amount of water to metabolize and to pass through. So you need extra water just to help with the fiber intake. The fiber is really healthy, but you need that fiber. Otherwise you can start to feel even more backed up.
Kimberly: So you want to really do the fiber, do the water. And then there’s also some really wonderful warming spices and everyday spices like ginger, drinking ginger tea, cumin is a really wonderful spice to cook with because it’s so great for digestion. And it’s a wonderful flavor. I didn’t grow up eating cumin, but I actually started having it later I think, college even maybe when I started, I went to college in Washington DC, and I started going to all different sorts of restaurants and there was this amazing, there is this amazing cultural part of DC called Adams Morgan.
Kimberly: So anyways little tangent there, but just about how you can awaken to all these new spices and all these new flavors here as an adult. And they can just open things up in a whole new the way. I will say that I do at home, you guys, I cook very simply, but I like to use different spices, but the actual foods are simple. You know, we will stir fry some broccoli. We have sprouted brown rice. Today I made a very simple vegetable soup. We had some beans, whatever it is. But working in spices like cumin and turmeric and ginger and cloves and cardamom and cinnamon and all these different spices is a really great way to help stoke digestion. And they all have different properties. And again, if you’re looking for some more information, we have another blog about spices. That could be really interesting for you. We’ll link to it into the show notes as well.
Kimberly: So different spices, the prunes, prune juice, dried fruit, lots of fiber, lots of smoothies. And just really making sure that if you are eating any sort of heavier food, if you have some animal products in your diet, to really have a lot of veggies and to reduce the portion size, because we know animal products don’t have fiber and they move a lot more slowly through your system. So just really pairing that with a lot of veggies, a lot of fiber rich foods, some salad, some enzymes in there. And that’s what I definitely recommend. So hope that helps Lucy and sending you lots of love. Let me know how you do. Let me know if you like the prune juice diluted better than the regular prunes.
All right my loves, we’re already to break time. We’re going to take a short break. And when I come back, we have two more questions for you guys on this topic of healthy digestion and specifically elimination tips and tools.
Break
Kimberly: All right my loves, we are back from our break. We have two more questions for you on this topic of digestion and elimination tips and tools. Very important. As I was saying at the beginning of our podcast, it’s not just what we take in, but what we release, what we let go of. This whole letting go concept is an enormous one. It spans our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of ourselves. When we let go in one of those aspects, we let go in other aspects because everything is so interconnected. So what I mean by that is when we let go of emotions, let’s say we let go of resentment, we let go in the way we process it. We have forgiveness. We release whether it’s forgiveness for ourselves or others. That releases energy in the body. And that helps to actually improve our digestion and to bring more blood flow and circulation back there.
Kimberly: Because otherwise, if we have very turbulent emotions, it signals to our nervous system to actually put our body to fight or flight. And that causes an imbalance of hormones and where our energy in the form of circulation and oxygen and blood flow is being directed. So there’s a very, very direct impact on our physical body. So that’s our letting go emotionally, let yourself process and feel these emotions. And when we let go physically, what we’re talking about here, when you go to the bathroom more, when you have more bowel movements, when you take something like Detoxy, which woof, it’s like doing an everyday cleanse, but not over cleansing, it’s not a laxative. It’s not habit forming. It’s just oxygen with Asc2P, vitamin C and it’s just this cleansing, this letting go effect.
Kimberly: And that helps you feel lighter in your mind so that therefore it’s easier. There’s more space. There’s a little bit more looseness for you to be able to let go of whatever has been holding you back, whether it’s sadness, grief, anger, jealousy, resentment, whatever it is. So it does all work on those levels. And same thing spiritually. When we let go of our way is the only way, and control, and rigidity and we let go of exactly how we want things to be and think how things should be. But we just start to find more, more peace and more flexibility through meditation. And we let go of all these little … this doesn’t mean we don’t have any annoyances, but we just start to let go of our strongholds, on our preferences and our likes and our dislikes, because we realize that we’re so much more than the surface. So really this topic is about letting go.
Kimberly: And letting go as I just mentioned, is really a flow that happens through our lives and it opens up pathways and it opens up energy and it allows us to be more magnetic. And it really allows us to have more beauty and goodness drawn towards us. So this topic right now, as I mentioned, it’s, it’s earthy. It’s primal, we’re talking about digestion, we’re talking about elimination, but it has effects through your whole life. And we all know what it’s like to feel clogged and backed up and stagnant [inaudible] a subtle level. It may seem subtle, but if that’s happening in your body, it’s going to have that effect energetically on your mind as well. So this topic is important, not just for your physical body, but for all areas: your relationships, your career, your goals, your dreams, everything is interconnected.
Question #3 around the topic of: Healthy Digestion and Elimination Tips and Tools: What is considered healthy elimination. I have at least one bowel movement a day, which doesn’t seem like enough to remove all the toxins out of my body?
Kimberly: So that being said, let’s get into our next question, which comes from Naomi, who lives in Vermont. She writes “What is considered healthy elimination. I have at least one bowel movement a day, which doesn’t seem like enough to remove all the toxins out of my body?” So I love this Naomi. Thank you so much my love for being in our community and your question. Sending you a big virtual hug. So there isn’t one exact answer and sometimes the pattern of your bowel movements might shift and they might change depending on other cycles, like your moon cycle, your menstrual cycle, if you’re traveling, seasonally tends to slow down a little bit between seasons, the lymphatic system may be a little bit affected. Definitely can slow down in the fall going into winter, which is considered the vata season. So I would say it’s not the same amount for each person, but I will say that what really, really matters is intuition.
Kimberly: And just the fact that you’re asking this question means that you can intuitively feel that you’re probably not releasing enough. I will say that if you’re having one bowel movement a day or even three bowel movements a day, doesn’t mean you’re thoroughly eliminating everything. It really depends on how big your bowel movements are. It depends on how much is impacted in your system. Sometimes if it comes out and it’s really hard and just dried like a hockey puck, you can be sure that there’s impaction in your system happening at some level. And so when something drops out of you and it’s pretty hardened, that is definitely a level of constipation and it needs to be dealt with because you don’t want that backup continuing to accrue in your system. So I would say what I was mentioning earlier, to really focus on hydration here and to focus on a healthy, mostly or all plant-based diet. So important on so many levels.
Kimberly: And I mentioned it before. I definitely recommend Detoxy. I don’t recommend a lot of things, but it just helps so much. I honestly don’t know what I would do without it. I take it … I go through periods still and I’ve been doing this now for 10 years. So my first book came out in 2011 and I go through periods where it really does feel stagnant. So I take it every day. Otherwise I usually take it every other day, but I can’t recommend it enough for this purpose. And if you’re looking to take it to the next level, because sometimes we need an extra aid, I think all of us do beyond healthy eating, because even though I continue to eat healthy and you know, more or less, I’m not perfect by any means but the 80% goal, I still consider Detoxy pretty essential.
Kimberly: And I am all plant-based and I do have a lot of fiber and I could work on my hydration sometimes. I’m so busy with the kids and running around and work that maybe I don’t drink as much water sometimes, and I need to work on that. That’s something I really want to focus on. I have water on my desk right now. And I’ve never really been, had an issue with dehydration, but sometimes you self-monitor that pee’s a little bit more yellow and you’re like, Oh yeah, just running around so busy. And I didn’t drink enough today. Sure you guys might be able to relate, some of you busy mommas can relate as well. But all right Naomi, thank you so much my love. Thank you so much for your question and let me know how you do. Keep in touch with us.
Question #4 around the topic of: Healthy Digestion and Elimination Tips and Tools: My nutritionist told me I don’t assimilate my food very well and made some suggestions on what to take. However, I know you talk about digestion a lot. How do I know if this is from the foods I eat or if I’m just prone to poor digestion from birth? I eat plant-based and avoid sugar meat and dairy products.
Kimberly: Okay. Next question comes from Ellie who lives in Nevada. She writes, “My nutritionist told me I don’t assimilate my food very well and made some suggestions on what to take. However, I know you talk about digestion a lot. How do I know if this is from the foods I eat or if I’m just prone to poor digestion from birth? I eat plant-based and avoid sugar meat and dairy products.” Ellie, thank you so much for your question my love and I send you a big hug. Lots of love there. You’re my neighbor since I live in California, over there in Nevada. So first of all, I will say that unless, barring a specific condition that your body, disease or some specific thing, I believe that as humans, that we come in with our healthy bodies and we do have some, of course, genetic predispositions and inclinations and stuff that we’re bringing in with us, but a healthy body should be able to handle healthy, natural food for the most part.
Kimberly: And so I would say that first of all, I want to suggest that you listen to my podcast with Dr. B, we can link to that in the show notes as well. He has a really great way of explaining how, he compares it to a muscle, how our gut really needs to strengthen over time. Also, one of the best things we can do is eat a very wide variety of different vegetables in our diet. And what happens is that activates different enzymes and different strengths, so to speak in our gut. And so we can strengthen our gut over time. We can start to be less sensitive to certain foods as our gut strengthens, Dr. B is not a fan of all those very many varied food sensitivity tests.
Kimberly: And I don’t want to regurgitate or attempt to regurgitate the podcast on this podcast. I just encourage you Ellie and anyone interested in listening to that podcast for the reasons he doesn’t recommend food sensitivity tests. And the reason that when we focus on a wide variety of foods, strengthening the gut, taking things like our SBO probiotics, the other supplement, I really recommend on this topic, that we have over at Solluna as well. And he is also plant-based.
Kimberly: So if we follow these basic protocols, then we can start to really strengthen our gut. I definitely recommend digestive enzymes before eating meals, which really helps with assimilation. But again, I would say that, I can say this from a deep place of personal experience, when we’re working on our digestion and we’re working on elimination, it’s really not just about food. Our four cornerstone approach, food, body, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth, definitely a hundred million percent really applies here. As someone who has had major digestive distress, major bloating for years and years and years, I can say that I really worked on it from the food angle first. I learned about this path and it was from that place and that excitement and seeing improvement that I wrote the Beauty Detox Solution. Now almost 10 years ago.
Kimberly: And food is so important here of course. It’s this denser gross physical matter that we’re putting in to assimilate with our energy, but also don’t forget about the body beyond food. So all the supplements I’ve been talking about which I’m so passionate about it because I know they really work and they can help. Detoxy, SBO probiotics and digestive enzymes. That’s a triad that we’ve created that just really helped with your system overall. And then I would say sleeping is really important to digestion, important to regulating all the different systems in your body. That’s part of our body cornerstone, and really just movement: walking, not staying stagnant, but walking in Ayurveda is considered one of the best things you can do for digestion, and particularly walking after you eat for about 15 minutes is a really beautiful practice.
Kimberly: Third cornerstone, emotional wellbeing. Well I talked about that right after our break. But when we hold in our mind, it affects our digestion. When we obsess, when we have those circular thoughts, we beat ourselves up over and over again, it causes that acid. You can feel it right? Sometimes when you get into an argument or drama or you just, Ooh, you’re beating yourself up or whatever it is, you can actually feel that sort of surge in your system. And it manifests differently in different bodies. Maybe it feels like, a churning in your stomach or an emptiness or butterflies, or whatever. Maybe it’s just tightening your shoulders. It’s different ways, but we know that emotions and feelings, even though we don’t see them have a tremendous effect on our bodies and therefore digestion.
Kimberly: So in our fourth cornerstone, which is spiritual growth, when we connect in with ourselves. As I mentioned earlier, when we are in tune with the true self, the self that’s beyond the surface, the divine spirit, our soul, the real us, it means that we just don’t care as much about all the little things of everyday life. We start to just feel more anchored and we feel more peaceful and this takes time, but it develops. Again, I can say this from personal experience. I used to have a lot, a lot more anxiety. And I just, over time, I’ve been doing this now for over a decade, but I put a big emphasis on meditation. I meditate twice a day as part of my practice. And that has also really helped my digestion. It just keeps you calm and soothed and your nervous system just more regulated and your nervous system has a big impact on your digestive tract.
Kimberly: So again, our four cornerstones are really important to pay attention to when it comes to this topic. If you guys haven’t checked it out yet, we have our Solluna circle, which is on our app, where we delve into the cornerstones every single month with different topics. This month, it’s energy and vitality. And it’s big, really rich topic that we have discussion with in our group every day, plus our Zoom and so on. So you can check it out if you’re interested, but I would say that we focused on food quite a bit here today, but just to remember that if you really want the best results, to focus on all of the cornerstones and take that time to meditate, to sit with yourself, to journal. These practices are just as important as making your GGS or drinking lemon water, because everything does affect everything else.
Thought of the Week
Kimberly: And in fact, that is our quote of the week. I just want to really emphasize that, because this topic is something that gets talked about, especially now people are really focusing more on their bodies and being mindful and just want us to remember that everything affects everything else. Everything affects everything else. So digestion, it’s obvious and easy to focus on food. And of course we do, and we want to do our best and make our best choices. But remember that your body emotional and spiritual practices also deeply affect healthy digestion. And you are whole being. You are whole, as you are. You are multidimensional, you are complex, and we want to treat and honor that beautiful completeness and wholeness that is you. That’s why we never just focus on one thing. We don’t just focus on food, but our approach is to focus on the wholeness, the wholeness that is your beautiful self.
Kimberly: So thank you so much for tuning in. I send you so much love. I am deeply grateful for you and just being part of our community. Really, I am just over the moon, excited about community and that we have each other on this journey. So thank you so much. I will be back here Monday for our next interview podcast. That’s teasing it too much. We have a really good one on Monday, you guys. So tune in for sure. And of course, check out our resources in our show notes over at mysolluna.com, where we will link to other resources in some of those other podcasts I mentioned. Also on social I’m @ _Kimberly Snyder. Sending you lots and lots of love and see you here soon.
