This week’s topic is: Essential Nutrients to Feel Good
As you Beauties know, the name of our podcast is the Feel Good podcast, so we’re really about feeling good, connecting to our deepest self, which is what we define as true beauty. Letting this resonate through our lives, our relationships, the way we take care of our bodies, the way we eat, our emotional and mental health, and of course our spiritual growth.
It’s not just to look good, but to feel good. That is the essence of true beauty. When we feel connected to ourselves, we feel more confident and are more magnetic. We can start to pull more in and attract more in, than feeling like we’re pushing and pulling and struggling all the time.
When we start to look at wellness through that lens, we can start to really feel good, and when we feel good we resonate that and we do become more truly beautiful. Today we’ll be focusing more on our food cornerstone and essential nutrients that will help us stay on track with our holistic lifestyle.
Have you been wondering about this very topic? If you want to know the answer to this question and 3 more sent in by Beauties just like you, listen now to find out!

Kimberly: Hey Beauties, and welcome back to our Thursday Q and A podcast where we love to hear what you are thinking and wondering about and how we can support you through questions directly from our community. The best thing about this is that a lot of times everybody has the same question, and even a question that you didn’t directly have, when you hear it, it often resonates or can spark a new thought or an idea or a practice that you implement in your own life. We really love having this show and we found it very powerful for our community, so thank you so much for tuning in today.
Kimberly: Our topic is Essential Nutrients to Feel Good. As you Beauties know, the name of our podcast is the Feel Good podcast, so we’re really about feeling good, connecting to our deepest self, which is what we define as true beauty, and letting that resonate through our lives, through our relationships, through the way that we take care of our bodies, the way that we eat, our emotional and mental health, and of course our spiritual growth. I can’t wait to hear what everyone has asked today.
Kimberly: We have our lovely general manager of Solluna, Katelyn, who is with me today. Hi, Kay. How’s it going, my love?
Katelyn: Hey, guys. It’s going great. Happy to be back. It’s crazy to think it’s almost Memorial Day weekend.
Kimberly: Oh my gosh.
Katelyn: Yeah, it’s like we’ve been in this quarantine bubble and everything, but yeah, everything’s good and excited to talk about this topic today because a lot of people aren’t feeling so good right now.
Kimberly: Okay. It’s also a pretty crazy time. My due date is in four days from today.
Katelyn: Oh, yes. That’s a very true fact.
Kimberly: I’m actually doing this podcast today leaning back on the couch. I’ve got the microphone propped up on my belly. Nutrients has been on my mind, of course, being pregnant. I think it’s on a lot of people’s minds, because of wanting to really create resiliency and strength in our bodies to keep our immunity up, just with what’s going on around in the world today. I think it’s very natural to want to tune in and take care of ourselves. We’re going to hit some of these really practical tips right now in our show, but before we get into our first question, Kay, I just want to remind you Beauties to please leave us a review on iTunes, which is free, easy to do, a great way to energetically support our show. So a huge thank you in advance.
Kimberly: Also, please be sure to subscribe to our show because we’re all so busy and there’s so much going on, so sometimes you don’t want to get behind in the episodes. It’s just a great way to tune in to make sure that you’re keeping inspiration and positivity in your life, and also learning, which is a really important form of growth and self-care. We have really amazing, interesting guests on Mondays and as always, this community show on Thursdays, where we really dive into different aspects of our lifestyle. When you’re over there on iTunes, you can also subscribe. Yeah, and all that being said, Kay, [inaudible 00:03:30]. Now, can get into our first question.
Leave a Review and Subscribe on Itunes
Katelyn: Yes, and to entice you guys to please leave us a review on iTunes, if you don’t already know, Kim shouts out a Beauty every week on Monday. So if you’re into that and you want to hear your review shouted out on the Monday show, go over there today and we’ll be looking for them for next week’s show.
Kimberly: Amazing. Thank you, Kay.
Katelyn: All right, guys. Yes, but it’s just that little tidbit before we dive in.
Question 1: I’ve been drinking your Glowing Green Smoothie for years now, sometimes I am just not in the mood to have it first thing in the morning. Is it so bad to drink my GGS later in the day and still get the nutrients I need?
Katelyn: Okay we have Laura living in Dallas, Texas. “I’ve been drinking you’re Glowing Green smoothie for a few years now. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood to have it first thing in the morning. Is it so bad to drink my Glowing Green smoothie later in the day, and does that still get me all the nutrients I need?”
Kimberly: Hi, Laura. Sending you lots of love out there in Dallas, Texas. Yes, in a nutshell, you can drink it later in the day. I will say that one of the reasons that we have created this morning routine is, number one, for regularity so that we know that no matter what you do for the rest of your day, it usually becomes harder for people to have control over what they’re eating as the day goes on between meetings and work and picking up your kids and all sorts of things, so we want it regularly in, and if you can create that later in the day, that’s great. Number two, it is a good idea to have fruit on an empty stomach. So if you are going to have it later in the day, I would say mid-afternoon or maybe towards lunchtime and then you push lunchtime a little bit further back. You want to separate the fruit by at least 25, 30 minutes or so, but you can do that later.
Kimberly: Number three, the reason we say that to have the GGS in the morning is because it gives so much energy, because there is so many antioxidants and minerals and nutrients and fiber, which stabilizes blood sugar. It’s aligned to the philosophy, to an extent, of intermittent fasting, where there isn’t concentrated fat and protein in the smoothie, but there’s fiber. So you’re filling up, you’re giving yourself that sustained energy, but you’re not weighing yourself down.
Kimberly: Those are some of the reasons we encourage it in the morning, but like I said, if you do it regularly, if you’re having it on an empty stomach, and if you just feel like you want something else sometimes in the morning, I understand. But those are just so you understand the reasoning behind it. I will say for myself, since being pregnant, sometimes I do feel the need to choose something in the morning … First of all, the hot water with lemon is I think very important to have first. We want heat in our body, which stimulates digestion. We want to get ideally into a routine of elimination and healthy bowel movement practice where we are going to the bathroom every day, and the hot water with lemon helps to stimulate that and puts vitamin C in our body, it activates digestion. I’ve never been an advocate for starting the day with a cold smoothie. I say we start the day with a hot drink, and then I like my GGS more to room temperature, so I take it out or make it with not super cold water or whatever.
Kimberly: I don’t like cold smoothies, personally. I’m not an ice water drinker. Maybe it’s growing up in an Asian household, but cold cold doesn’t really work for me. But since I’ve been pregnant, I will often have a couple mangoes in the morning now and then my GGS. I think we go through different periods in our life, but get your GGS in every day and you’ll still get the nutrient value. Long answer to the question, but yes.
Question 2: I know you love elixirs. Can you share some ingredients that are a good choice to add in that will promote me to have more energy and focus?
Katelyn: No, that’s great. We always have a lot of questions that pop up around the Glowing Green smoothie. I think we haven’t had one in a while, so I wanted to throw that in there. All right, let’s jump into Sharon‘s question. She’s living in Clearwater, Florida. “I know you love elixirs. Can you share some ingredients that are a good choice to add in that will promote me to have more energy and focus?”
Kimberly: Sure, Sharon. I’ll also mention that over in our website, mysolluna.com, we have a whole elixir, drink, smoothie section, so I think you’ll get some really great ideas over there with some really interesting combos. I also want to highlight that in our monthly program, our online program, which is our Solluna Circle, we have a special elixir recipe every month that’s based around a theme. It’s really exciting, I love coming up with these new elixirs every month. I often get obsessed with them. I’m still drinking our February elixir all the time now, okay, which was hemp milk or almond milk based, matcha, spirulina and cacao. I really love that earthy mix.
Kimberly: Energy and focus, that’s a great one for you, Sharon. Is that recipe also on the website now, Kay? I think we put it on there, didn’t we? Or I put it on my Instagram.
Katelyn: Yeah, I think we put it on Instagram. We don’t have it on the website, but it is on Instagram.
Kimberly: Okay. Yeah, so Sharon, go over to @_kimberlysnyder. You’ll see if you scroll down a bit, a month or so ago, there is a recipe on the main feed, but it’s basically those ingredients. I love raw cacao, it does have some energizing qualities. It has some caffeine, some theobromine. I love matcha. I don’t overdo it now because I’m pregnant, but I think a little bit a day is is okay. It definitely has been touted for its health properties, for focus properties. It does have some caffeine, but it’s said to help give you sustained energy, it’s said to not contribute to anxiety in some of the research I’ve read. I also love spirulina. I think spirulina is really wonderful. It’s got amino acids, it’s got minerals, it’s a wonderful food. Another thing that I’ve put into my elixir sometimes is the herb ashwagandha, which is stress relieving. It’s a wonderful adaptogen. It strengthens your body. That’s great. There’s certain medicinal mushrooms that I also like a lot, such as lion’s mane, which has been correlated with focus, so that’s another ingredient you could source and you could add into your elixirs during the day.
Kimberly: Yeah, those are some of my favorite ingredients right now. I also love the expansive feeling that ginger gives you. It really connects you in, it’s warming. It makes you feel your body. I feel that ingredients like that, that really help you anchor into your body, help with focus and they help with presence and staying present. So ginger is another ingredient, Sharon, that I always, always have around as well.
Katelyn: Elixirs are such a great way to mix it up too, where it’s not maybe a treat, like a physical eating treat, but I look at it definitely as a treat for myself. At least once a day, I make some form of an elixir and I find it to be really fun.
Kimberly: Oh, yeah.
Katelyn: You can just mix up the ingredients and play around.
Kimberly: Oh, yeah.
Katelyn: We’ll link, as Kimberly mentioned, to our recipe section over on My Solluna And you guys can just take that as a starting point and play around and have fun with it, depending on what you’re in the mood for.
Kimberly: Mm-hmm (affirmative), love.
Break
Katelyn: Okay, Beauties. We’re going to let Kimberly take a short break here and then she’ll be back to answer the last two questions.
Kimberly: All right, Beauties. We are back from our short break. We have two more questions for you guys on this topic of essential nutrients to feel good, and really that’s what our goal is. It’s not just to look good, but to feel good. That is the essence of true beauty. When we feel connected to ourselves, we feel more confident, we are more magnetic. We can start to pull more in and attract more in, than feeling like we’re pushing and pulling and struggling all the time. This has been a really powerful lesson for me, who in the past has been going through a lot of the same things that we all go through as women, looks-based, is my hair okay, are my clothes cool enough, am I skinny enough, to really starting to connect and know myself and like myself on a deeper level, which comes from getting into our four cornerstone lifestyle, which is food, body, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth.
Kimberly: When I started looking at wellness through that lens, I started to really feel good, and when we feel good we resonate that and we do become more truly beautiful. We have a free ebook on getting started with the four cornerstones on the website, which I highly recommend you guys check out. Yeah, I don’t want to digress too much [inaudible 00:13:14] essential nutrients as well. Obviously, we’re focusing more on our food cornerstone today, but I just want to make sure you guys know that we have all these other resources and definitely really practice and teach a holistic lifestyle.
Katelyn: Yes. No, it was great, because there’s a lot of people that listen for the first time, so I think it’s always good to mention that.
Question 3: I’m not sure if I’m not feeling great because of my emotions and the changes to my world, or if I’m not getting enough of the right nutrients in my body. I do follow the Beauty Detox Lifestyle 70% of the time. I also honestly still have a sweet tooth, as well as salty cravings. Any suggestions on what I should steer clear from?
Katelyn: All right. We have a question from Olivia living in South Berwick, Maine. “I’m not sure if I’m not feeling great because of my emotions and the changes to my world, or if I’m not getting enough of the right nutrients in my body. I do follow the Beauty Detox Lifestyle 70% of the time. I also honestly still have a sweet tooth, as well as salty cravings. Any suggestions on what I should steer clear from?”
Kimberly: Olivia, this is a great question and definitely related to what we were just speaking about with the cornerstones. Feeling good, feeling great is so multifactorial. In my last book, Recipes For Your Perfectly Imperfect Life, I was actually quite shocked to see the research about feelings connecting with bloating and with inflammation, which we know is a precursor to many diseases and pain and autoimmune conditions. Physically not feeling good can very much start with stress and very much start in the mind. I think we’re trained in the Western world to say, “Oh, I’m not feeling good. I need to keep tinkering and tinkering more with my diet,” but it’s funny, as someone that has gone deeply into diet and part of what I do as being a nutritionist, I’m here to say the food isn’t the only factor guys.
Kimberly: If you’re doing 70% of the time, Olivia, that’s pretty freaking good. Again, I would encourage you to look at the other cornerstones. Maybe you need to be sleeping more. A lot of people are not sleeping to the extent and to the highest quality that they could right now, and that definitely affects everything from your hormones to your nervous system. Make sure that you’re taking time for self-care and you’re journaling and you’re meditating and you’re breathing and you’re feeling grounded or working on feeling grounded with being in nature, growing some things in a pot, whatever it is.
Kimberly: When it comes to a sweet tooth, salty cravings, we had a show recently, was it last week, Kay, about cravings. Salty cravings are usually crunchy foods, like chips, pretzels, things of that nature, and that has a lot to do with pent up tension and stress. The fascia in our job runs all the way down our back and is connected to tension that can run down into our hips. If you’re still feeling a craving, a connection to those foods, it’s not just physical, it could be needing a healthy outlet for releasing tension and stress. I also recommend my third book, Beauty Detox Power, Olivia, where I get into more of these food cravings.
Kimberly: Now, sweet tooth, there’s a balanced sweet tooth and then there’s imbalanced. When it gets out of control, it becomes this monster in us. Don’t forget that sweet is still one of the key tastes in Ayurveda, madhura. We need sweet. Sweet is, in fruit, the most high vibration, healthy, natural foods that we all need to get for optimal nutrition and nutrients. Our brains need some sweet to function well. I eat a lot of fruit, I eat chocolate. I don’t want to change those things. I don’t consider them bad per se, but on the other hand, we know if we’re relying on food to shift our mood, then that is going beyond just nutrient needs. That’s going into the psychological part. That’s where I would encourage you, Olivia, we’ll link in the show notes to the podcast on Stress Eating 101, check out that book.
Kimberly: But I will say, I think you’re doing pretty great. When you want to look into patterns, you want to look into our Four Cornerstone Lifestyle, the ebook, if you haven’t yet already, and just see how you can nurture yourself beyond focusing on food, but what you can do with your body, what you can do with your emotions and your spiritual work. Because a lot of nutrition comes to us not in the form of food, but in these other means as well.
Katelyn: Such a good reminder. I think we all go to food first.
Kimberly: Yes, of course.
Katelyn: It’s like a natural … I don’t know if maybe that’s just like what’s marketed to us constantly on TV and ads and things like that, just about food in your body. So I think it’s so great to highlight these other areas. You can really find a lot of peace, guys. Not overnight, but it does come.
Kimberly: Exactly.
Question 4: Sometimes I think my body can’t handle too much fruit. How important is fruit in my diet and can I get my needs met from just eating veggies, lentils and other sources?
Katelyn: Okay. We have one more show from Donna, living in Kirkland, Washington. “Sometimes I think my body can’t handle too much fruit. How important is fruit in my diet and can I get my needs met from just eating veggies, lentils and other sources?”
Kimberly: Donna, this is a great question. Sending you love out in Washington. I really believe that a healthy body should be able to handle healthy, natural food. We have, I’m not sure if it’s aired yet, but I did an interview with a really great gastroenterologist named Dr. B, who talks about the gut being like a muscle and we need to build up that muscular strength. We talked at length about how neither of us believe in those food sensitivity tests necessarily, because they’re measuring antibodies in your blood and it doesn’t really have to do with your gut health. There’s thousands and thousands of enzymes in your gut that can become reawakened and activated that make it easier for you to digest certain foods again. So the answer is to really strengthen your overall gut health, not to, perhaps for the long term, cutout certain categories of foods forever. As your gut gets stronger and you’re healthier, you should be able to handle more natural foods.
Kimberly: Candida is a big issue with fruit. When I had candida, I would get bloated every time I would eat any form of sugar. This is from my first book, The Beauty Detox Solution, goes into great detail about blossoming beauty, how I gave up fruit for almost a year and then I started re-introducing it when my gut was healed, Donna, and I did very well on fruit. That may be something that you want to look into, because fruit does have natural sugar and if your body’s compromised right now out, then sugar may be an for you in all its forms. I will definitely say the number one thing I recommend is taking our SBO probiotics to heal your gut health. It’s not enough to just give up sugar, but you need to help heal the gut.
Kimberly: Number two, fruit should be eaten only on an empty stomach. If you’re eating after eating heavier foods like lentils, you tend to get bloated because it’s not digesting as quickly. Number three, I’m a big advocate of fruit because it is such a high-vibration food because it comes in a complete nutritional package. Maybe now, Donna, your gut has to heal, maybe now you may have candida or some condition that’s keeping you from fruit, but I will say don’t give up on fruit forever. Work on your gut health, read The Beauty Detox Solution, take into account some of these other protocols, but then revisit fruit in the future and see how your body does because I honestly believe that fruit is a part of our natural diet.
Kimberly: Now, there’s many different kinds of fruit. There’s lower sugar fruit, there’s very low sugar fruit like lemons, cucumber, and then the next up would be berries, blueberries, strawberries, acai, which you can get in frozen smoothie packets. You could try playing with those and then, again, check out the candida, take digestive enzymes before you have … Some people take them before the Glowing Green smoothie because they need help and support in digesting fiber. If that’s the case for you, you could also check out the digestive enzymes and take it from there.
Kimberly: But I will say that work on your overall health, your overall gut health, and hopefully in the future you can be able to handle fruit better, because as a whole category, it’s a massive category, I would want that ideally to still be part of your diet.
Katelyn: Amazing. I know I went through that period too, of cutting fruit out and adding it back in and just feeling out your body and seeing where you’re at. The podcast that Kimberly mentioned with Dr. B actually did air last week, so you can head over to iTunes if you haven’t already listened to it. It will be there for you to tune in and get more information. We’ll also link to it in our show notes today.
Kimberly: Awesome, Kay. Thank you so much.
Thought of the Week
Katelyn: Of course. All right, well, we always love to round out the show in a similar fashion. Do you have any thoughts top of mind?
Kimberly: I do. This quote comes from one of my favorite writers, who was actually influenced by Eastern spiritual writings such as the Bhagavad Gita. His name’s Ralph Waldo Emerson. As you know, my son’s name is Emerson. In a way he is named after him, to an extent. He was so connected to this idea, one of my favorite essays is called Self-reliance by Emerson, and just really connected to the inner world. I’m going to go on and on, but here’s the quote, Kay. “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
Kimberly: I wanted to end this quote because we started the show and we were talking about essential nutrients to feel good, we’re talking about feeling good, we’re talking about true beauty, and so much of this is the tuning into our own bodies, to our own spirit, to our own essence. I just want to remind you Beauties, because it is easy to fix one part of the lifestyle, whether it’s food or diet, trying to be perfect with this and being perfect with that, I just want to remind you guys that no matter what, we’re on this journey and we keep evolving, we keep unfolding. The more we just keep tuning into ourselves and our power, the more you’re going to feel good.
Kimberly: You are a unique Beauty just as you are, even if you don’t eat perfectly, even if you worry about that zit on your face or whatever, gaining five pounds. There is no one else in the world like you, so I want you to remember that. In a world that’s so image-dominant, where people get the same haircut and they get the same lip injections so they all look the same or try to look like an ideal beauty type, when you can just relax into yourself, there’s really nothing more attractive than that and more beautiful than that. I’m here to support you in that. It’s something that I’ve struggled with myself, of course. I think especially as women, we all do, wanting to fit in, wanting to look like the ideal beauty type, wanting to be liked, wanting to be loved, especially by men to get that validation. Yeah, it’s just being yourself, strengthening into that, finding more confidence around that is very powerful.
Kimberly: We have tons of resources for you over on the website, from meditations to the free cornerstone ebook I encourage you to check out. I’m also here with you on Instagram Lives every Monday and Wednesday at noon for our live Solluna Circle time. Thank you so much for being part of our community. I want you to know that I am here to support that light inside of you. My biggest goal, I feel like my biggest purpose is to help your light in your true beauty come forth. The more we are ourselves, the brighter the whole world shines.
Kimberly: Thank you so much, Kay, for tuning in with us and for gathering the questions. We appreciate you so much. You can submit the questions over on the website, there’s a tab now on the homepage for podcast. We will be back here Monday for our next interview show. Again, in between now and then, sending you lots of love wherever you may be. Hope you’re staying safe and cozy. Check out Instagram, check out the website. Lots and lots of love.
