This week’s topic is: Digestive Distress Side Effects
There’s so much going on right now for all of us. We are processing a lot. Of course, emotionally our lives have shifted and perhaps our food habits have also shifted because we’re home, we’re eating out less in restaurants.
I definitely think that there are some positives that perhaps you’ve experienced, like learning to cook healthier meals for yourself or just saving money from not being in restaurants.
With everything going on, there can definitely be different things going on in your body. I’m excited to cover all of that today and to make sure you’re feeling your best digestion-wise.
As we talk about here in our Solluna Beauty Detox community, so much of how we feel is dictated by great digestion that can harness energy and free up energy, and just really magnify our day-to-day experience of positivity.

Quick announcement for you, Beauties. As you know, I’m about to have my baby and I will be going on maternity leave starting next week. Don’t worry, though. I have prerecorded some amazing shows for you to enjoy while I’m spending time with my new beautiful baby boy and adjusting Bubby to having a sibling, and of course, hubby. In Ayurveda, there is a sacred 40 days of rest that the mother would ideally take post-birth to bond with their child and to help rejuvenate her body. So I definitely didn’t do that with Bubby. I was back to work right away, but I’m really committed with this baby to observing this really sacred time with the family. And I look forward to being back with you in the upcoming months.
Again, we’ve got so much material. We’ve gotten ahead with the show. So we are not going to miss a beat. We’ll have lots and lots of great stuff for you on here. And I’m always with you. I will be actively on Instagram. You can still reach out. I’m going to be talking to Katelyn regularly. You can still submit questions and everything will go forward. But I just want to wish you so much love and gratitude for you being part of our community. I am so, again, just grateful for our connection and that we can be on here together. Namaste Beauties. Lots of love and see you back here soon.

As always, we have Katelyn with us on the line who has gathered the questions. She’s based in Virginia. Hey, big topic today, digestive distress, something that we have both been through.
Katelyn: 02:11 Oh my goodness. Especially the last few months from moving and not eating right and then trying to get a new routine. There was a while I wasn’t eating great. The last few months I’ve tried to get back on track with my morning rituals, having hot water with lemon, Glowing Green Smoothie®, the SBO Probiotics, the whole gamut. Because for a while, even me, I had fallen off track with just life getting chaotic. I think this is always great to talk about because no matter how long you’ve been following the program, everybody experiences digestive distress.
Kimberly: 02:51 I mean, I think it’s important to remember that this is a lifelong journey and it ebbs and it flows. I have felt the most constipated that I felt in years being pregnant, again, much more constipated than I remember with Bubby. Maybe I forgot. Taking Detoxy into this process has been really helpful, but it’s not like we just cure our digestion and we don’t have to work on it. It’s something that we do need to work on and pay attention to daily, which is why we recommend taking the SBO Probiotics daily and doing our practices like you were mentioning, Kate, the morning ritual and routine. I’m sure we’ll get into in the questions, there’s a lot emotionally that’s connected with digestion. It’s something that we just have to keep going and paying attention to. It’s not one of those things that we just automatically fix and it goes away.
Question 1: I’m wondering how to develop a better sense of listening to my body. When it comes to food, I tend to listen to my brain more. I’ve been plant-based for a couple of years now, but I would really like to work on developing my inner voice. Thank you so much for all you do. I really appreciate all your resources being provided and I love the Solluna circle.
Katelyn: 03:55 Right. Unfortunately, it’s not a set it and forget it because we eat every day, we experience stress and emotions every day. Unfortunately, we’re not on autopilot, but yeah, let’s dig in. We have a lot of great questions. Our first one is from Jenny living in Wisconsin. She’s asking, “I’m wondering how to develop a better sense of listening to my body. When it comes to food, I tend to listen to my brain more. I’ve been plant-based for a couple of years now, but I would really like to work on developing my inner voice. Thank you so much for all you do. I really appreciate all your resources being provided and I love the Solluna circle.”
Kimberly: 04:38 Oh, Jenny, that’s amazing. Thank you so much for writing in. I’m so happy that you’re part of our circle and I’m sending a big hug out there. Hope you’re keeping well and cozy. I think that this is a really great question because in the beginning, I think most all of us get to a point, especially as women where we do intellectualize food and we start to overthink it. Now, this is partially because there’s so much information in magazines and social media and what our friend is doing and different diets and products. Then we start to really wonder, I think, am I doing it right? Should I be doing something different? Should I be buying something? Should I be doing what my best friend is doing? This, of course, all of this is external information. This is all outside of our bodies and it’s outside of our cells.
Kimberly: 05:35 In this world that we live in, it’s very, very easy to get caught up in that. I remember being the same way where I was voraciously reading all the research papers. I was trying all the different diets in my body. I tend to be overanalytical, overintellectual naturally myself. This idea of listening to your body, you’re definitely on the right track, Jenny. Our body has so much wisdom and intelligence to share with us when we start to tune in. I love that you’re tuning into this. I think a couple things. I think that it’s important to start just the way that we have our morning routine and our evening routine and starts to become a daily process, simple steps that we add into our lifestyle definitely reinforce something we’re working on. In this case, if we’re wanting to listen to our bodies more.
Kimberly: 06:35 I think a simple practice is, and I do this now, but I had to train myself to do it by the way, is to actually really pause before you make a meal, before you eat, before you make anything. You really sit down with yourself and you ask your body, what do you want to eat? Like, what do you need right now? Because sometimes I get into autopilot mode. I’m like, oh, I just went to the farmer’s market and I have these tomatoes and I have all this stuff. But when I listen to my body, my body will say, no, I actually want something really hot right now or I need some more… You know when I’m pregnant, it’ll tell me I need some substance. I really need an extra Power Protein Smoothie right now.
Kimberly: 07:23 When we pause and we let whatever comes out naturally, instead of do, do, do, run from one thing to another, I think that’s really, really important for listening. Because otherwise we maybe just be on an app or making the same thing yesterday that we made today or that we saw on Instagram and we disconnect from ourselves. That’s really, really important. Now it’s online shopping because if you’re not going to the store or if you are, you can do this when you’re shopping. Which vegetables, what food do you want right now, body? Don’t go in there when you’re starving, obviously, but just having some space and seeing what feels good to your body, what you have a visceral reaction to. Maybe the red peppers look really, really bright and pretty. Maybe when you get to the root vegetable section, your body is just like, yes, yes, give me some grounding vegetables.
Kimberly: 08:27 I think part of really listening to your body is creating the space and asking your body what you want and then listening for a answer. It sounds really simple but imagine if you had a friend and you were like, oh, you know, I wonder what they need right now. They’re not really telling me how they’re feeling, but you never asked them how they’re feeling. You just take over the conversation and talk and tell them or give them what you think they need. Imagine that situation with your body. It’s also I think meditation, which is our fourth cornerstone, not fourth cornerstone, it goes food, body, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth. When we learn to be more present, there is a link between our spiritual practices and how we eat. Again, everything is so interconnected even though we may not initially think of it that way, but if we can learn to breathe and be present, that really helps us listen to our body.
Kimberly: 09:38 We’re starting to drop into our body because we’re focusing on our breath. That naturally will give us more cues about food versus just overthinking in our head. That’s another really important practice, Jenny, that I recommend that will actually make you a much more intuitive eater.
Katelyn: 09:57 I agree, like planning ahead and taking time to think about what we need and what we want beyond like say a craving level is so important when it comes to food. Because innately, we know what our body needs. Sometimes we just ignore that inner voice.
Kimberly: 10:16 Mm-hmm (affirmative). Exactly.
Question 2: How do I know if my digestive system is being affected by my emotions?
Katelyn: 10:19 Okay guys. Let’s see what Steph from Vermont is thinking. “How do I know if my digestive system is being affected by my emotions?”
Kimberly: 11:13 Hey, Steph in Vermont. Sending you lots of love. Thank you so much for your question. I love this question because it shows me that you’re really opening up to this idea of digestion being affected more than food, which is really, really powerful when we start to connect these dots. It’s connected to the last question that we answered from Jenny about listening to your body more. When we listen, and this can be very helpful. What can be helpful in this practice is actually do keeping a food journal, actually do noticing things is to make note of what’s going on with your digestion, what’s going on in your life or in a conversation. For instance, it could be like, Wednesday night I had a really stressful conversation with my best friend and I ended up getting really gassy and bloated, or lately I’ve been on the news two more hours a day and I noticed that I’ve been constipated for two days.
Kimberly: 12:18 I think sometimes when we actually write things down, it helps to highlight connections and we can make those connections, and then awareness grows. Then we can start to really see, oh wow, this is really powerful. My digestion is really being affected by how I’m feeling. Then we can start to take steps. Some of these steps could be finding ways to relieve stress, feeling our feelings, journaling, meditating, making sure that we’re not eating when we are in a stressful position, processing, finding a friend to talk to. There’s so many things we can do with that information. But to your question, we start to know we’re being affected when we start to make links and we start to notice patterns. I encourage you Steph to journal, to see what’s going on in your body to just really tune in and to your emotions and to what’s going on in your physical body.
Kimberly: 13:25 Because when we start to see how interconnected they are, it’s amazing, and again, which is why our cornerstones work so synergistically, food, body emotions, and spirit. If our emotions are tied up, tangled up, blocked, we know it’s going to affect how we eat, our body, our connection to ourselves, so on and so forth. Again, a lot of this research that first brought this to light for me was in my latest book, Recipes for Your Perfectly Imperfect Life, where I could really start to read about in a scientific sense how much our mental health and stress and emotions play a role in bloating, again, digestion and inflammation. When we start to realize how interconnected everything is, I mean, we reach new levels of power and I think we start to get really amazing results.
Kimberly: 14:22 Get a food journal, Steph, note things. You can just put it in the note section of your phone or whatever. Two, although I like to really write things down by hand, and see what happens, see what you become aware from just by noting things.
Katelyn: 14:37 Right, the patterns we constantly cycle through can really be eye-opening, I think. I love tracking and data and all of that. You can keep it simple, but it’s definitely good to just dig in a little sometimes if you’re feeling lost and you’re like, what’s going on? I feel like it helps to just see pen to paper like, oh, this has happened three times in a row. I had the same result, it’s because I did X, Y, Z.
Kimberly: 15:08 Mm-hmm (affirmative). Exactly. The awareness starts to really build.
Katelyn: 15:13 Yes. All right, guys, you think about that. If you want to head over to mysolluna.com during our short break and download your free Four Cornerstones ebook, we would love for you to do that. There’s a wealth of information and you will understand even more how we talk about things on the show here once you’ve dived in and made yourself aware of the cornerstones and how you can put them into play in your life.
Kimberly: 15:37 Mm-hmm (affirmative). Amazing, Kate. Thanks for the reminder.
Break
Katelyn: 15:41 Yes. You guys know I love to remind you about the Four Cornerstones book. I’m obsessed with it. Please do that. We’re going to let Kimberly take a short break and then she’ll be back to answer the last two questions.
Kimberly: 15:56 All right, Beauties. We are back from our short break and we have two more questions for you all on digestive distress side effects. This is a big one. We know that our gut is so highly attuned to our feelings and our emotions. I’m really glad that we’re highlighting this today. Love to hear what you’re wondering. Two more questions from the community on the subject.
Question 3: Through this virus I’ve not wanted to eat very much. When I do eat, it’s healthy, but my digestion seems off. Is this possible considering I don’t have much in my gut to begin with?
Katelyn: 16:24 Yes. We have Gabby living in Utah. “Through this virus I’ve not wanted to eat very much. When I do eat, it’s healthy, but my digestion seems off. Is this possible considering I don’t have much in my gut to begin with?”
Kimberly: 17:26 Gabby, thank you so much for this question. I love this question. I think that it really highlights what I was just saying, which is that our emotional body and our physical body are so closely tied together. We know that our digestion area is what yoga would call our Manipura chakra area. We know that our gut-brain axis, we know that serotonin and all these neurotransmitters and the way that we feel as well as our immunity of course, is so closely connected to our microbiome and our gut health. What’s interesting is Ayurveda talks about the stomach being the space, the center for the space element in our body, which can get balanced with Vata, which with too much air, we can get bloated there.
Kimberly: 18:22 There’s a lot of different philosophies and ways that we can see the intertwining of emotional wellbeing and physical wellbeing. Science also shows that as well. We know when we’re stressed, we know that there’s less blood flow going to digestion. We know that we can tend to get more bloated, stress hormones are secreted. It affects our nervous system. Absolutely, even though you’re eating healthy, you may feel very off. You mentioned the virus, which means that in general there’s a big disruption to our lives. You may still be trying to cope with this new normal right now, which is not seeing a lot of people and being home a lot and having apprehension about the future. All of this is going to be felt very much in your gut, in your center of your being, in your belly, so that even if you’re eating a little bit, things may not be functioning the way that they usually do.
Kimberly: 19:28 The same thing for the fact that you don’t want to eat very much. When we’re going through trials, animals in the wild, if they feel sick, if they feel unwell, if they feel fearful, they don’t eat. It’s a natural mechanism our body puts into play because we know when we have heightened stress and fear, blood flow is taken out of our digestive system. I will just say that, do all the practices that we’ve talked about here, Gabby, in the community like journaling and meditating and taking your SBO Probiotics to still nurture your gut. Take Digestive Enzymes before you eat. Try to get a lot of great sleep. Abhyanga, self-massage in the evenings to help yourself calm down, could feel really healing.
Kimberly: 20:22 Herbal tea, ginger tea would be really great for your belly for promoting better digestion and circulation. As Kate mentioned, just in the break, the Four Cornerstones ebook would be really great for you I think in establishing some practices in each of the cornerstones. I would say just be real gentle with yourself, listen to your body. If you don’t feel like eating as much right now, go with that and then sip on some ginger tea while you’re eating later in the evening. Again, take those few supplements I mentioned, really be gentle with yourself right now because there is so much going on.
Katelyn: 21:04 There is, and I just really hold on to my morning practice. I know you do too, Kay, where that’s my sacred time. It really kick starts how I start my day. We even talk about that with our glowing green smoothie. Just anything you can do to start your day off right because we never know what’s going to happen once you go to work or you’re dealing with your family. Something might come up that at least you’ve had a pretty solid morning, and the rest of the day can unfold. That’s always something to remember through the teachings as well.
Kimberly: 21:40 Yeah, that’s great and very practical.
Katelyn: 21:43 Yes. You know, that’s me, Kay, earth mama over here.
Kimberly: 21:48 It’s true. It’s true. The tangible steps.
Katelyn: 21:50 Yeah.
Kimberly: 21:51 Great.
Question 4: I have been constipated and bloated for months. I feel angry most of the time. What should I do? I’ve tried eating more greens, but I feel even more bloated.
Katelyn: 21:51 Yeah, I just think that’s great because just having anything that’s easy right now, making it easy, not that it’s easy to do but once you start going in a routine. All right, we have one more question here from Michelle living in Georgia. “I have been constipated and bloated for months. I feel angry most of the time. What should I do? I’ve tried eating more greens, but I feel even more bloated.”
Kimberly: 22:21 This is a great question, Michelle. Sending a big hug out there in Georgia. I hope you’re keeping cozy and well. It’s really interesting how much wisdom I’m feeling in these questions just by what you guys bring up in them. You bring up constipated and bloating and then you also bring up anger. What’s really interesting about this, I mentioned in the last question about our Manipura chakra and energy-wise because we are energetic beings, scientists have shown we’re 99.99999999% space. We actually have very little actual solid physical material in our bodies. What that means is energy and emotions are really energy in motion, that’s what an emotion is and really affects how our body functions. The Manipura chakra which lies on our digestive system governs emotions like bitterness and anger and resentment. I too, Michelle, suffered from constipation and bloating for not just months but for many years. I definitely had a lot to process.
Kimberly: 23:38 I had resentment, I had anger. I just had a lot of things that were going on in my life and then subsequently also in my body. This is something I would say, if you’re interested in going really deep here, my third book is called Beauty Detox Power. It talks about foods and practices to really balance each of the chakras. As far as the Manipura one, I think you’d really benefit from that whole section, pages and pages long. I will say that we need to get to the root of releasing some of this anger. There’s things you can do for the constipation and bloat like the supplements that we talk about. There aren’t many. There’s actually only three. Take your SBO Probiotics, take your Digestive Enzymes, and take your Detoxy to physically help you release and go to the bathroom more.
Kimberly: 24:42 That will provide immediate relief because you don’t want to be sitting there heavy and constipated and with a lot just swimming around in your system, which we know gets picked up by your blood and gets recirculated throughout your body. We need some immediate relief. I recommend, especially the Detoxy, getting on track there. Then this anger we have to get to, we were talking about earlier, understanding patterns, childhood wounds. For me, a lot of my anger was held up in this idea of not being heard, things from my childhood. There was triggers. There was things I hadn’t processed. When I started to journal about that and I found someone great to talk to, was not a traditional therapist but more of like energy healer person. I think we all gravitate towards certain kinds of therapist or tribe members or friends or whatever it is.
Kimberly: 25:41 It really helped me get more to the root to release that old, old pain. Otherwise, we keep feeling it over and over again. A couple of books I recommend are the Letting Go book by Dr. Hawkins, and The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. He talks about this old pain being like thorns, rose thorns, and letting it come out of you so your body and your mind aren’t as affected as much in the future. Greens are great, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re getting to that emotional root that is going to impact your body until we deal with that. Again, back to the cornerstones. If we ignore one, let’s say we ignore our emotions. We tend to over obsess like, well, how can I eat better? What’s the food? What can I do food-wise? It’s not really about the food per se. You can go really deep into there, but it comes to a point where you can only go so far and then we really have to look to the other cornerstones.
Katelyn: 26:48 Yes. You need a deep breath after that one. There’s a lot to take in. Even me lately, I’ve been trying to be more in touch with my emotions, Kay. I got into aroma therapy. We can link to some of the shows from Charlynn Avery who’s on our podcast a few times a year, that’s aromatherapy expert. I had never really done it. I think it’s really helpful. Just to add that at the end there. I made a little mix for when you feel like angry or agitated. I was thinking of Michelle. I think the smells can really help alter your mood.
Kimberly: 27:29 What’s in your mix, Kate?
Katelyn: 27:31 It has lemon, orange, black pepper, and there’s another one but I’m just blanking on it right now. It’s got that citrusy awakening type smell and it really just feels good to me. I have lavender, but I use that and that’s my go to sleep remedies. I try not to use that during the day so it doesn’t get contrived. It’s my evening routine.
Kimberly: 28:00 Mm-hmm (affirmative). I love that. I mean, scent is really powerful. Thank you for bringing up the podcast with Charlynn because she definitely has so much to say about it. You know, I’d love to go into her house, Kate, and see all the places she’s using aromatherapy and how it smells. I’m sure it’s amazing.
Katelyn: 28:20 Yeah. You can diffuse them. You can do roller. I mean, there’s so many things. We have a couple DIY scrubs or recipes over on mysolluna.com that we can link to for you guys. There’s just a lot of ways, again, with that practicality that just make you feel good a little at home pampering, if you’re still home more now than ever.
Kimberly: 28:46 I love it.
Thought of the Week
Katelyn: 28:47 All right guys. Before we round out the show, as always, we just like to pick your brain a little bit more, Kay. Are you thinking anything for our inspirational thought of the week?
Kimberly: 28:58 Yes. I actually recently posted this quote on Instagram and Facebook and I really love this quote. I wanted to share it on here as well. It’s from a poet that I believe was writing during the, I’m going to say the Elizabethan times, sometime in the 1800s, his name is Fulke Greville. He writes true beauty. Well, it really starts, I cut it off, but I’ll say he writes, “The criterion for true beauty is that it increases upon examination.” When we’re talking about these cornerstones through and through, we say here still the cornerstones of true beauty. I have been pondering this thought of beauty for years. Four out of five of my books had the word beauty in the title. I think especially as women, we are confronted with that word. We think about our beauty a lot and what that means because it’s brought up so much in our society.
Kimberly: 30:06 This quote seems so powerful to me. This topic actually is related to it because I think it’s, to me, true beauty is a lot about connection. It means that we’re so connected to ourselves, to our hearts, to our bodies, that we’re very comfortable with ourselves. We know that confidence is very magnetic. When someone is really confident and comfortable, they tend to be very natural and they tend to be more loving because they don’t have a lot of imbalances and jealousy and other things that blocks them from connecting with other people. It increases upon examination when we are around really, truly beautiful people, which really isn’t about just the external at all. It means that we feel, oh my gosh, this person is more beautiful, I really want to be around them.
Kimberly: 31:09 It’s nothing to do with age. Like I said, it’s nothing to do with features, where in contrast, somebody can be “beautiful” physically but when you get to know them, sometimes they don’t seem so beautiful to you anymore. Sometimes they don’t have the depth, they don’t have the love. This idea of true beauty getting bigger and bigger the closer you look is so powerful to me. I think about the people that I have found to be the most beautiful. It’s really about that connection to themselves and that comfortness and the love and they’re connected to their hearts. What’s also powerful is that when you have that connection, you tend to be more physically beautiful because you become more connected to your body and you become connected to your emotions. You just glow, you’re magnetic.
Kimberly: 32:10 Even if you don’t have so-called perfect features by conventional standards, your eyes are bright and your skin and your hair become healthy. When I came across this quote, Kate, I got really excited because I was like, oh, I get it. I know exactly what this guy is talking about. He’s wording it in a way that I have never worded exactly but we’ve talked about this true beauty concept a lot. Our way, our offering is to help you tap into your true beauty because we truly believe everybody has their own expression of beauty, is through this cornerstone approach because how we eat food is super important. How we take care of our bodies is super important. Our emotional wellbeing, the third cornerstone is super important. Fourthly, the spiritual growth, the tapping in the mindfulness, the meditation. The shift from going outward to going inward is also going to help you become truly beautiful.
Kimberly: 33:10 I am very excited to share this with you obviously. I’d love you to think about who feels the most truly beautiful in your life. It could be a great, great grandmother. It could be some teacher you had that maybe never wore a stitch of makeup and wore really frumpy clothes, but just had so much heart energy that she felt more and more beautiful the more you got to know her. I think about this shaman, Kate, that I was working with a year or two. She was like a medicine woman. She was really connected to the earth. Remember when we were starting to do our first Solluna Circles? She’s very native American, right?
Katelyn: 33:58 Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Kimberly: 33:59 Working with the different corners like the North, the South, the different animals that are associated with each one. She immediately pops into my mind. She was in her 60s and didn’t wear makeup and was a little bit overweight, definitely had a lot of wrinkles, but her heart and her soul just shone through. I would always want to sit at her feet and be around her and learn more. Whenever I hear beauty, she’s one of the first people that pops into my head. It’s powerful. Who pops into your head, Kate? Don’t think too much.
Katelyn: 34:42 I know. I’m always bad on the spot, you know that. I would probably say I have one girl friend, her name is Diana. She has really been a guiding light in my life. I’ve been friends with her for about 15 years. She just has this great energy about her and positivity and the way she goes about her life. She actually was plant-based years before me. I just like, I’m never going to be plant-based. I was like, you’re crazy. Then it was just funny how later in life I made changes and everything. I agree. It really depends on somebody’s attitude and energy and just how they make you feel more so than anything because as we know, we all want to feel and look our best like on maybe an outside vanity level. At the end of the day, we all know that’s not really what matters and creates and fulfills happiness.
Kimberly: 35:53 Yeah. It’s fleeting and it doesn’t have depth necessarily. You know? I mean, I’ve been around a lot, having worked in the entertainment industry for years, I’ve been around a lot of so-called conventionally beautiful people, whether they’re my clients or people striving to be at that level and all these Hollywood parties. I’ll just say that if we put all our worth on that outer shell, it’s easy to become very dissatisfied, have very low self-esteem because that outer part is always going to shift. There’s nothing wrong with wanting good skin. Obviously, we have a whole skincare line and we care about these things but the true beauty is just very deep for us. It’s many, many layers. Just something to think about when you think about who is truly beautiful to you, who is it? What is it about them that makes you feel like they’re such a beautiful person?
Katelyn: 37:01 Yeah. I think that’s why we have our tagline or our motto at Solluna, own your true beauty and feel good, just really owning how we look and feel about true beauty. What does it mean? It’s different to everybody and just defining that and feeling good about it really just rolls off the tip of your tongue.
Kimberly: 37:26 I love it.
Katelyn: 37:28 I think it’s such a great way to round out today’s show. As always, thank you for your time, Kim. We want to just remind you beauties that you can head over to mysolluna.com and click on the podcast tab. Please keep submitting your question.
